The road to opportunities： landscape change promotes body-size divergence in a highly mobile species

Landscape change provides a suitable framework for investigating population-level responses to novel ecological pressures. However, relatively little attention has been paid to examine the poten- tial influence of landscape change on the geographic scale of population differentiation. Here, we tested for morphological differentiation of red-necked nightjars Caprimulgus ruficollis breeding in a managed property and a natural reserve situated less than 10 km apart. At both sites, we also esti- mated site fidelity over 5 years and quantified the potential foraging opportunities for nightjars. Breeding birds in the managed habitat were significantly larger in size--as indexed by keel length--than those in the natural one. However, there were no significant differences in wing or tail length. Immigration from neighboring areas was almost negligible and, furthermore, no individual （out of 1130 captures overall） exchanged habitats between years, indicating strong site fidelity. Food supply for nightjars was equally abundant in both habitats, but the availability of foraging sites was remarkably higher in the managed property. As a result, nightjars--particularly fledg- lings-in the latter habitat benefited from increased foraging opportunities in relation to those in the natural site. It seems likely that the fine-scale variation in nightjar morphology reflects a pheno- typic response to unequal local conditions, since non-random dispersal or differential mortality had been determined not to be influential. High site fidelity appears to contribute to the mainten- ance of body-size differences between the two habitats. Results from this nightjar population high- light the potential of human-induced landscape change to promote population-level responses at exceedingly small geographic scales.

Diabetes and Periodontal Diseases: An Established Two-Way Relationship

Background: Periodontal diseases (PD), including periodontitis, are chronic inflammatory pathologies caused by bacteria in the subgingival biofilm which affect the periodontal tissues. PD is now considered a localized, chronic, oral infection that activates the host immuno-inflammatory responses both locally and systemically, and also constitutes a source of bacteraemia. It is a known fact that periodontal diseases exercise an important influence on the pathogenesis of numerous systemic diseases, including diabetes mellitus (DM). In the mid-nineties, sufficient scientific evidence emerged to confirm an association between DM and periodontitis, which then began to be regarded as the sixth complication of DM. Current scientific evidence points to a two-way relationship between DM and periodontal disease, whereby DM is associated with an increase in the incidence and progression of periodontitis, while periodontal infection is associated with worsening glycemic control in diabetic patients. This two-way relationship points to a need to promote oral health in DM patients, and to implement a joint management protocol between endocrinologist and dentist that aims to create adequate conditions for early diagnosis and the effective treatment of both diseases.

This paper analyzes the network of passes among the players of the Spanish team during the last FIFA World Cup 2010,where they emerged as the champion,with the objective of explaining the results obtained from the behavior at the complex network *** team is considered a network with players as nodes and passes as(directed) edges.A temporal analysis of the resulting passes network is also done,looking at the number of passes,length of the chain of passes,and to network measures such as player centrality and clustering *** of the last three matches(the decisive ones) indicate that the clustering coefficient of the pass network remains high,indicating the elaborate style of the Spanish *** effectiveness of the opposing team in negating the Spanish game is reflected in the change of several network measures over time,most importantly in drops of the clustering coefficient and passing length/speed,as well as in their being able in removing the most talented players from the central positions of the ***'s ability to restore their combinative game and move the focus of the game to offensive positions and talented players is shown to tilt the balance in favor of the Spanish team.

Residential end-uses disaggregation and demand response evaluation using integral transforms

Demand response is a basic tool used to develop modern power systems and electricity markets. Residential and commercial segments account for 40%–50% of the overall electricity demand. These segments need to overcome major obstacles before they can be included in a demand response portfolio. The objective of this paper is to tackle some of the technical barriers and explain how the potential of enabling technology(smart meters) can be harnessed, to evaluate the potential of customers for demand response(end-uses and their behaviors) and,moreover, to validate customers’ effective response to market prices or system events by means of non-intrusive methods. A tool based on the Hilbert transform is improved herein to identify and characterize the most suitable loads for the aforesaid purpose, whereby important characteristics such as cycling frequency, power level and pulse width are identified. The proposed methodology allows the filtering of aggregated load according to the amplitudes of elemental loads, independently of the frequency of their behaviors that could be altered by internal or external inputs such as weather or demand response. In this way, the assessment and verification of customer response can be improved by solving the problem of load aggregation with the help of integral transforms.

Secondary male hypogonadism： a prevalent but overlooked comorbidity of obesity

Male hypogonadism associated with obesity is a very prevalent condition and is increasing in parallel with the epidemic prevalence of obesity. Low testosterone levels promote higher fat mass with reduced lean mass. Male hypogonadism is related to an increase in associated cardiometabolic complications, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, the metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Its influence as a comorbidity of obesity is becoming more evident and should be evaluated and treated in at-risk patients. Mechanisms involved in this relationship include body composition changes, the presence of adipokines, insulin resistance, and other factors, some of which are still unknown. Weight loss and treatment to replace testosterone levels improve the metabolic profile and quality of life in patients with obesity and hypogonadism; these beneficial effects depend on treatment modality and duration of therapy. The use of testosterone replacement therapy may be indicated, as it has not been shown to increase cardiovascular risk, and retrospective studies suggest a reduction in events in men with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Hyperpycnal (over density) flows and deposits

A hyperpycnal flow forms when a relatively dense land-derived gravity flow enters into a marine or lacustrine water reservoir. As a consequence of its excess of density, the incoming flow plunges in coastal areas, generating a highly dynamic and often long-lived dense underflow. Depending on the characteristics of the parent flow(flow duration and flow rheology) and basin salinity, the resulting deposits(hyperpycnites) can be very *** to flow duration, land-derived gravity flows can be classified into short-lived or long-lived flows. Shortlived gravity flows last for minutes or hours, and are mostly related to small mountainous river discharges, alluvial fans, collapse of natural dams, landslides, volcanic eruptions, j?kulhlaups, etc. Long-lived gravity flows last for days,weeks or even months, and are mostly associated with medium-to large-size river *** the rheology of the incoming flow, hyperpycnal flows can be initiated by non-Newtonian(cohesive debris flows), Newtonian supercritical(lahars, hyperconcentrated flows, and concentrated flows) or Newtonian subcritical flows(pebbly, sandy or muddy sediment-laden turbulent flows). Once plunged, non-Newtonian and Newtonian supercritical flows require steep slopes to accelerate, allow the incorporation of ambient water and develop flow transformations in order to evolve into a turbidity current and travel further basinward. Their resulting deposits are difficult to differentiate from those related to intrabasinal turbidites. On the contrary, long-lived Newtonian subcritical flows are capable of transferring huge volumes of sediment, freshwater and organic matter far from the coast even along gentle or flat slopes. In marine settings, the buoyant effect of interstitial freshwater in pebbly and sandy hyperpycnal flows can result in lofting due to flow density reversal. The present study aimed to develop a protocol for somatic embryogenesis and encapsulation of coffee embryos(Coffea arabica L.),for the conservation of genotypes with characteristics of commercial *** embryos were induced from leaf explants in Murashige and Skoog medium(MS)supplemented with 1 mg·L^(−1) of 2,4-dichlorophenoxiacetic acid(2,4-D)combined with 2 mg·L^(−1) of benzyladenine(BA).Somatic embryos(SE)at the globular stage were encapsulated in a sodium alginate matrix;two treatments were tested:MS+5 mg·L^(−1) BA+1 mg·L^(−1) NAA+3%(w/v)alginate,and MS+7 mg·L^(−1) BA+5.7 mg·L^(−1) indoleacetic acid(IAA)+3%(w/v)*** was complexed with 100 mM calcium chloride(CaCl_(2)).Viability of the encapsulated SE was determined by staining with 0.01%fluorescein diacetate(FDA)after 0,15,30,and 45 days of storage at 4℃.Embryo viability was 100%in both treatments.
