Recovering Wood Waste to Produce Briquettes Enriched with Commercial Kraft Lignin

Aiming to use lignocellulosic biomass as energy source, one of the process that may aggregate values is the densification process, which allows the production of bioenergy using solid fuels, mainly for reducing transportation costs. In this research, solid fuel from co-briquetting of wood residues from sawmill using commercial kraft lignin as binder was investigated. The effects of compression pressure (900, 1200 and 1500 PSI) and briquette formulation (varying wood and kraft lignin proportion) on the quality and characteristics of briquettes were evaluated. The main findings were that briquetting of wood residues with kraft lignin resulted in an improvement of bulk density, strength rupture modulus, low heating value (LHV) and high heating value (HHV). The briquettes using 4% and 6% of kraft lignin, and submitted to 1200 to 1500 PSI, presented higher bulk density and strength resistance, respectively. On the other hand, the heating values showed the highest results with the addition of 2% lignin at 900 PSI, being the legal range for additives in briquettes for many countries such as in European Union.

Yield and quality of maize following the foliar application of a fertilizer based on the byproduct “shale water”

The water extracted from the shale rock (shale water) through the pyrolysis process to obtain fuel oil and other products shows a composition based on organic compounds and a wide range of minerals and trace elements with an important role in plant nutrition, suggesting its use as a fertilizer. Thus, the influence of foliar application of shale water (SW), with or without the micronutrients zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), boro (B) and molybdenum (Mo), was evaluated regarding yield and quality of maize grains. The yield, the total antioxidant activity, and the content of starch, phenolic compounds and carotenoids were improved in maize grains following the application of three doses of 7 L/ha of SW, which indicates that SW may influence the primary and secondary metabolisms. The application of SW with micronutrients resulted in the increase of grain yield;however, did not result in the improvement of grain quality. The foliar fertilizer formulations also had an influence in the content of minerals and aminoacids of the grain. The results indicate that SW has potential to be used in agriculture to improve yield and quality of maize.

Urban Air Quality Plans and Integrated Assessment Methodologies

The air quality directive (2008/50/EC (of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008)) requires European Member States to design appropriate AQPs (air quality plans) for zones and agglomerations where the air quality does not comply with the limit values and to assess possible emission reduction measures to decrease concentration levels. The Portuguese agglomeration of Porto Litoral is one of the several European Union urban areas that had to develop and implement AQPs to reduce particulate matter (PM10). The AQPs were initially designed based on a scenario approach and using an air quality model, which was applied over the study region for the reference situation with the current PM10 emissions, and for a reduction scenario with PM10 emissions re-estimated considering the implementation of abatement measures. Aiming to cost-efficiently optimize Porto Litoral PM10 abatement measures, the assessment procedure was repeated using an optimization approach based on the RIAT + (regional integrated assessment tool +). Porto Litoral urban area"s technical and non-technical measures were characterized (including associated costs) and, through the application of the air quality model to 20 emissions abatement scenarios, S-R (source-receptor) relationships were created. This paper comparatively describes the air quality plans designed to improve PM10 levels in the Porto Litoral agglomeration based on both the scenario analysis and the optimization approach.

Analysis of the Power System from an Electron Beam Accelerator and the Correlation with the Theoretical Dosimetry for Radiation Processing

Dynamitron DC1500/25/04 type EBA (Electron beam accelerator), model JOB 188, was manufactured by IBA Industrial (Radiation Dynamics, Inc.) and installed at IPEN-CNEN/SP, in 1978. The technical specifications of the EBA are: energy 0.5 to 1.5 MeV; beam current: 0.3 to 25.0 mA; beam scanning: 60 to 120 cm; beam width: 25.4 mm and frequency: 100 Hz. Nowadays, this accelerator has been used for innumerable applications, such as: For sterilization of medical, pharmaceutical and biological products, treatment of industrial and domestic effluents and sludge, preservation and disinfestations of foods and agricultural products. Other important application are lignocellulosic material irradiation as a pre-treatment to produce ethanol bio-fuel, decontamination of pesticide packing, solid residues remediation, organic compounds removal from wastewater, treatment of effluent from petroleum production units, crosslinking of foams, wires and electric cables. Electron accelerator JOB 188 is, also, very important composite and nanocomposite materials and carbon fibers irradiation, irradiated grafting ion-exchange membranes for fuel cells application, natural polymers and multilayer packages irradiation and biodegradable blends production. The energy of the electron beam is calculated as a function of the current in the accelerator high-voltage divisor, taking into account the thickness and density of the material to be irradiated. This energy is calculated considering the electron through the entire material and the distance from the titanium foil window, so that the absorbed doses at the points of entrance and exit are equivalent on the material. The dose is directly proportional to the beam current and the exposure time of the material under the electron beam and inversely proportional to the scan width. Pramipexole, a dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist, attenuates reserpine-induced fibromyalgia-like model in mice

Fibromyalgia(FM) is a complex pathology described as persistent hyperalgesia including somatic and mood dysfunctions, depression and anxiety. Although the etiology of FM is still unknown, a significant decrease in biogenic amines is a common characteristic in its pathogenesis. Here, our main objective was to investigate the role of dopamine D3/D2 receptor during the reserpine-induced pain in mice. Our results showed that pramipexole(PPX) – a dopaminergic D3/D2 receptor agonist – inhibited mechanical allodynia and thermal sensitivity induced by reserpine. Relevantly, PPX treatment decreased immobility time and increased the number of grooming in the forced swimming test and splash test, respectively. Animals that received PPX remained longer in the open arms than the reserpine group using elevated plusmaze apparatus. The repeated PPX administration, given daily for 4 days, significantly blocked the mechanical and thermal allodynia during FM model, similarly to pregabalin, although it failed to affect the reserpine-induced thermal nociception. Reserpine administration induced significant downregulation of dopamine concentration in the central nervous system, and repeated treatment with PPX restored dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and spinal cord tissues. Moreover, PPX treatment inhibited oxidants production such as DCFH(2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and nitrite, also decreased oxidative damage(carbonyl), and upregulated the activity of superoxide dismutase in the spinal cord. Together, our findings demonstrated the ability of dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist in reducing pain and mood dysfunction allied to FM in mice. All experimental protocols were approved by the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina(UFSC) Ethics Committee(approval No. 2572210218) on May 10, 2018.

Watermelon is an L-citrulline-rich fruit that has been used as a supplement to increase L-arginine in plasma,which in turn plays a critical role in the synthesis of nitric oxide,a molecule that regulates vascular *** rind,similar to its pulp,presents a high L-citrulline content,yet a lower concentration of sugar,which would be more convenient for individuals who need to refrain from excessive sugar ingestion(i.e.,diabetics and obese individuals).Further,ingestion of watermelon rind can be a sustainable alternative to increase plasma L-arginine,given that rind of fruits is commonly ***,we evaluated the effect of ingestion of a product derived from watermelon rind and pulp(microencapsulation in spray drier)on plasma amino acids(L-citrulline,L-arginine and L-ornithine),glucose,and *** participants(28.36±5.70 years)were enrolled in a single blind,cross-over and randomized *** ingested microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp(containing 4 g of L-citrulline)plasma amino acids,glucose,and insulin were evaluated before and 30,60,90 and 120 min after *** was observed that both microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp increased L-citrulline through 120 min and microencapsulated watermelon rind significantly increased L-arginine at 30 *** addition,microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp similarly increased plasma glucose and insulin *** conclusion,these findings suggest that both microencapsulated watermelon rind and pulp are effective to increase plasma L-citrulline and microencapsulated watermelon rind effectively increases plasma *** addition,rind and pulp promote similar changes on plasma glucose and insulin.
