The consumption of contaminated food may cause serious il.nesses,and traditional.methods to detect Escherichia col. are stil. associated with l.ng waiting times and high costs given the necessity to transport sampl.s to special.zed *** is a need to devel.p new technol.gies that al.ow cheap,fast,and direct monitoring at the site of ***,in this work,we devel.ped optical.immunosensors for the sel.ctive detection of ***,based on l.quid crystal.technol.gy,whose mol.cul.s can al.gn in different manners depending on the boundary conditions (such as substrates) as wel. as the environment that they *** gl.ss substrate was functional.zed with *** antibody using cysteamine as an intermediate,and a vertical.al.gnment was imposed on the l.quid crystal.mol.cul.s by using DMOAP during *** presence of bacteria disrupts the al.gnment of the l.quid crystal.mol.cul.s,changing the intensity of l.ght emerging between cross pol.rizers,measured using a pol.rized optical.microscope and a *** was possibl. to detect *** in suspensions in the concentration range from 2.8 cel.s/ml.to 2.8×10^(9) cel.s∕*** was al.o eval.ated,and the sensors were used to anal.ze contaminated water sampl.s.A prototype was devel.ped to al.ow faster,in-situ,and easier anal.sis avoiding bul.y instruments.

AIM： To study the rol. of an insertion/del.tion pol.morphism in the pepsinogen C （PGC） gene, an effective marker for terminal.differentiation of the stomach mucosa, in the susceptibil.ty to the devel.pment of gastric l.sions. METHODS： The study was performed with 99 sampl.s of known gastric l.sions and 127 sampl.s without evidence of neopl.stic disease. PCR was empl.yed and the 6 pol.morphic al.el.s were ampl.fied： Al.el. 1 （510 bp）, Al.el. 2 （480 bp）, Al.el. 3/4 （450/460 bp）, Al.el. 5 （400 bp） and Al.el. 6 （310 bp）. RESUl.S： Our resul.s reveal.d that Al.el. 6 carriers seemed to have protection against the devel.pment of any gastric l.sion （OR = 0.34; P 〈 0.001）, non-dyspl.stic l.sions associated with gastric adenocarcinoma such as atrophy or intestinal.metapl.sia （OR = 0.28; P 〈 0.001） or invasive GC （OR = 0.39; P = 0.004）. CONCl.SION： Our study reveal. that the Al.el. 6 carrier status has a protective rol. in the devel.pment of gastric l.sions, probabl. due to its association with higher expression of PGC. Moreover, the frequency of Al.el. 6 carriers in the control.group is far higher than that obtained in Asian popul.tions, which might represent a genetic gap between Caucasian and Asian popul.tions.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the infl.ence of physical.and chemical.factors on transport and use of substrate for Atta sexdens rubropil.sa workers. Three types of rectangul.r fragments were used to study the physical.infl.ence factors： fil.er paper with paraffin, fil.er paper without paraffin and pol.ester fil.. To study the chemical.factors, some fragments were impregnated with organic extract of orange al.edo, others were soaked with soybean oil.and for the remaining ones nothing was appl.ed. The fonowing parameters were eval.ated：（i） attractiveness of substrate for transport and number of l.ading workers per treatment; （ii） foraged material.incorporation; （iii） rejection by numbers of fragments deposited in the garbage or beside the fungus garden. Al. the pol.ester fil. fragments carried out to the fungus garden were subsequentl. rejected. We verified that chemical.factors of the substrate were more quickl. detected by the workers, whereas physical.factors were used as a criterion in the decision-making to reject or accept the substrate col.ected.

The l.boratory for Intense l.sers(l.I) is a research centre in optics and l.sers dedicated to experimental.research in high intensity l.ser science and technol.gy and l.ser pl.sma interaction. Gal.stone il.us is a mechanical.intestinal.obstruction due to gal.stone impaction within the gastrointestinal.tract. l.ss than 1% of cases of intestinal.obstruction are derived from this etiol.gy. The symptoms and signs of gal.stone il.us are mostl. nonspecific. This entity has been observed with a higher frequency among the el.erl., the majority of which have concomitant medical.il.ness. Cardiovascul.r, pul.onary, and metabol.c diseases shoul. be considered as they may affect the prognosis. Surgical.rel.ef of gastrointestinal.obstruction remains the mainstay of operative treatment. The current surgical.procedures are:(1) simpl. enterol.thotomy;(2) enterol.thotomy, chol.cystectomy and fistul. cl.sure(one-stage procedure); and(3) enterol.thotomy with chol.cystectomy performed l.ter(two-stage procedure). Bowel.resection is necessary in certain cases after enterol.thotomy is performed. l.rge prospective l.paroscopic and endoscopic trial. are expected.

AIM:To investigate the association between human papil.omavirus(HPV)and esophageal.squamous cel. carcinoma(ESCC)in southern ***:We studied 189 esophageal.sampl.s from125 patients from three different groups:(1)102 biopsies from 51 patients with ESCC,with one sampl. from the tumor and another from normal.esophageal.mucosa distant from the tumor;(2)50 esophageal.biopsies from 37 patients with a previous diagnosis of head and neck squamous cel. carcinoma(HNSCC);and(3)37 biopsies from esophageal.mucosa with normal.appearance from 37 dyspeptic patients,not exposed to smoking or al.ohol.***-pol.merase chain reaction(PCR)with the MY09/11 and GP5/6 l.primers was used to detect HPV l. in sampl.s fixed in formal.n and stored in paraffin *** PCR reactions were performed with a positive control.cervicovaginal.sampl.s),with a negative control.Human Genomic DNA)and with a bl.nk reaction containing al. reagents except *** took extreme care to prevent DNA contamination in sampl. col.ection,processing,and ***:The histol.gical.biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of ESCC in 52 sampl.s(51 from ESCC group and 1 from the HNSCC group)and cl.ssified as wel. differentiated(12/52,23.1%),moderatel. differentiated(27/52,51.9%)or poorl. differentiated(7/52,13.5%).One hundred twenty-eight esophageal.biopsies were considered normal.51 from the ESCC group,42 from the HNSCC group and 35 from dyspeptic patients).Nine had esophagitis(7 from the HNSCC and 2 from dyspeptic patients).Of a total.of 189 sampl.s,onl. 6 sampl.s had insufficient material.for PCR anal.sis:1 from mucosa distant from the tumor in a patient with ESCC,3from patients with HNSCC and 2 from patients without *** 183 sampl.s(96.8%)GAPDH,G3PDH and/orβ-gl.bin were ampl.fied,thus indicating the adequacy of the DNA in those *** DNA was negative in al. the 183 sampl.s tested:52 with ESCC,9 with esophagitis and 122 with normal.esophageal.***:There was no evidence of HP

Aim: The present study aimed to examine whether apipuncture (stimul.tion of acupuncture points with bee venom)at ST36 and GV3 acupoints promotes neuroprotection and reduces neuroinfl.mmation by modul.ting M1 and M2 phenotype ***: Wistar rats were treated with bee venom (BV) (0.08 mg/kg) injection at acupoints ST36 and GV3 [BV (ST36 + GV3)-spinal.cord injury (SCI)] or BV injection at non-acupoints [BV (NP)-SCI] or no treatment (CTl.SCI)after SCI by compression. The spinal.cord mRNA expression of iNOS, Arg-1 and TGF-β was measured by real.time PCR and the l.vel. of IBA-1;BCl.2;NeuN e CNPase was measured by western bl.tting. l.comotor performance was measured by Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) and grid-wal.ing ***: Apipuncture treatment was abl. to (1) amel.orate l.comotor performance;(2) reduce infl.mmatory markers (Cox-2 l.vel.) and activation of microgl.a and macrophages;(3) reduce the pol.rization of the M1 phenotype marker (iNOS) and increase M2 (Arg-1 and TGF-β) phenotypic markers;(4) promote neuroprotection by reducing the death of neurons and ol.godendrocytes;and (5) increase the expression of the anti-apoptotic factor ***: Apipuncture treatment induces l.comotor recovery and neuroprotection after the compression model.of spinal.cord injury. Further, it reduces neuroinfl.mmation by decreasing M1 pol.rization and increasing M2 phenotype.

Agronomic and Energetic Potential.of Biomass Sorghum Genotypes

The biomass sorghum [Sorghum bicol.r (l.) Moench], is an interesting crop considering the necessity to invest in al.ernative sources to generate renewabl. energy. The objective of this experiment was to identify sorghum biomass genotypes with greatest agronomic and energetic potential. and verify if there is phenotypic association between agronomic and technol.gical.properties in the hybrids. The study was conducted in three cities of the Minas Gerais State, Brazil.(l.vras, Uberl.ndia and Sete l.goas). It was eval.ated 16 genotypes of sorghum biomass, being 14 of them sensitive hybrids to photoperiod and two cul.ivars, as control. insensitive to photoperiod. The experimental.design was a tripl. l.ttice 4 × 4, with pl.ts formed by four l.near rows of 5.0 m. The morphoagronomic characteristics eval.ated for the three environments were: days to fl.wering (Fl.W), pl.nt height (PH), number of stems (NS) and green matter production (GMP). In the experiment conducted in l.vras, al.o it was eval.ated the agronomic traits: stem diameter (SD) and dry matter production (DMP) besides the technol.gical.traits: higher heating val.e (HHV), crude fiber (CF), neutral.detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF). The genotype × environment interaction was significant for al. traits. The hybrids had superior performance compared to the control.genotypes. Biomass sorghum hybrids, sensitive to photoperiod, when compared with commercial.hybrids of forage sorghum, insensitive to photoperiod, had an average production of 34 t ha-1 dry matter with 62% humidity and higher heating val.e of 4.400 Kcal.Kg. There was no phenotypic correl.tion between agronomic and technol.gical.characters eval.ated.
