Background: The aim of this work was to investigate the accuracy of prediction of three different biometric methods for the calculation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses. Methods: In 59 consecutive patients who underwent extracapsular cataract- extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation, we compared the refractive results at the first day (D1) and 6 weeks (W6) after surgery with the calculated refraction of three biometric methods: the carl Zeiss “ IOL- Master 99” (IOLM), the Biovision “ Echograph Class 1- Type B” (BIOV) and the Allergan Humphrey “ Ultrasonic Biometer Mod. 820” (AHUB). For statistical calculation box- plots, the Wilcoxon signed- rank test and linear regression analysis were used. Results: In all patients the mean of the postoperative refraction was - 0.07 D (SD: 1.41) at day 1 and 0.12 D (SD: 1.18) at week 6. Compared to the postoperative refraction at week 6, the calculated refractive values were higher in all three measuring devices: IOLM: + 0.28 D (SD: 0.67), BIOV: + 0.60 D (SD: 0.88), AHUB:+ 0.26 D (SD: 0.92). There were no statistically significant differences between IOLM and BIOV, or respectively, AHUB and BIOV (P just for systematic differences of the agreement, one can calculate the postoperative refraction at week 6 (REF6) from IOLM by using the linear regression formula: REF6=1.1 × .IOLM+ 0.3. Conclusion: A comparison between the three biometric methods and the refractive results at day 1 and week 6 after cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens showed that the calculated mean values obtained from the three biometric methods are higher than the real postoperative refraction. Calculations using the Zeiss IOL- Master and the Allergan Humphrey Ultrasonic Biometer are closer to the patient’ s postoperative refraction than calculations using the Biovision Echograph.

Pulmonary contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography(CE-MRA) is useful for the primary diagnosis of pulmonary embolism(PE). Many sites have chosen not to use CE-MRA as a first line of diagnostic tool for PE because of the speed and higher efficacy of computerized tomographic angiography(CTA). In this review, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of CEMRA and the appropriate imaging scenarios for the primary diagnosis of PE derived from our unique multiinstitutional experience in this area. The optimal patient for this test has a low to intermediate suspicion for PE based on clinical decision rules. Patients in extremis are not candidates for this test. Younger women(< 35 years of age) and patients with iodinated contrast allergies are best served by using this modality We discuss the history of the use of this test, recent technical innovations, artifacts, direct and indirect findings for PE, ancillary findings, and the effectiveness(patient outcomes) of CE-MRA for the exclusion of PE. Current outcomes data shows that CE-MRA and NM V/Q scans are effective alternative tests to CTA for the primary diagnosis of PE.

Pedigree information is of fundamental importance in breeding programs and related genetics ***,many individuals have unknown *** methods to identify and confirm direct parent–offspring relationships are routine,those for other types of close relationships have yet to be effectively and widely implemented with plants,due to complications such as asexual propagation and extensive *** objective of this study was to develop and demonstrate methods that support complex pedigree reconstruction via the total length of identical by state haplotypes(referred to in this study as“summed potential lengths of shared haplotypes”,SPLoSH).A custom Python script,HapShared,was developed to generate SPLoSH data in apple and sweet *** was used to establish empirical distributions of SPLoSH data for known relationships in these *** distributions were then used to estimate previously unknown *** studies in each crop demonstrated various pedigree reconstruction scenarios using SPLoSH *** cherry,a full-sib relationship was deduced for‘Emperor Francis,and‘schmidt’,a half-sib relationship for‘Van’and‘Windsor’,and the paternal grandparents of‘Stella’were *** apple,29 cultivars were found to share an unknown parent,the pedigree of the unknown parent of‘Cox’s Pomona’was reconstructed,and‘Fameuse’was deduced to be a likely grandparent of‘McIntosh’.Key genetic resources that enabled this empirical study were large genome-wide SNP array datasets,integrated genetic maps,and previously identified pedigree *** with similar resources are also expected to benefit from using HapShared for empowering pedigree reconstruction.

Human intravenous immune globulin(IVIg),a purified IgG fraction composed of~60%IgG1 and obtained from the pooled plasma of thousands of donors,is clinically used for a wide range of *** biological actions of IVIg are incompletely understood and have been attributed both to the polyclonal antibodies therein and also to their IgG(IgG)Fc ***,we demonstrated that multiple therapeutic human IgG1 antibodies suppress angiogenesis in a target-independent manner via FcγRI,a high-affinity receptor for *** we show that IVIg possesses similar anti-angiogenic activity and inhibited blood vessel growth in five different mouse models of prevalent human diseases,namely,neovascular age-related macular degeneration,corneal neovascularization,colorectal cancer,fibrosarcoma and peripheral arterial ischemic *** was mediated by the Fc region of IVIg,required FcγRI and had similar potency in transgenic mice expressing human Fcγ***,IVIg therapy administered to humans for the treatment of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases reduced kidney and muscle blood vessel *** data place IVIg,an agent approved by the US Food and Drug Administration,as a novel angioinhibitory drug in doses that are currently administered in the clinical *** addition,they raise the possibility of an unintended effect of IVIg on blood vessels.

Background Emerging evidence suggests that stem cells and progenitor ce lls der ived from bone marrow can be used to improve cardiac function in patients after acute myocardial infarction. In this randomised trial, we aimed to assess whethe r intracoronary transfer of autologous bone-marrow cells could improve global l eft-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) at 6 months’follow-up. Methods After successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute ST-segment eleva tion myocardial infarction, 60 patients were randomly assigned to either a contr ol group (n=30) that received optimum postinfarction medical treatment, or a bon e-marrow-cell group (n=30) that received optimum medical treatment and intraco ronary transfer of autologous bone-marrow cells 4.8 days (SD 1.3) after PCI. Pr imary endpoint was global left-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) change from baseline to 6 months’follow-up, as determined by cardiac MRI. Image analyses were done by two investigators blinded for treatment assignment. Analysis was pe r protocol. Findings Global LVEF at baseline (determined 3.5 days > after PCI) was 51.3 (9.3%) in controls and 50.0(10.0%) in the bone-marrow cell group (p=0.59). After 6 months, mean global LVEF had increased by 0.7 percentage points in the c ontrol group and 6.7 percentage points in the bone-marrow-cell group (p=0.0026 ). Transfer of bone-marrow cells enhanced left-ventricular systolic function p rimarily in myocardial segments adjacent to the infarcted area. Cell transfer di d not increase the risk of adverse clinical events, in-stent restenosis, or pro arrhythmic effects. Interpretation Intracoronary transfer of autologous bone-ma rrow-cells promotes improvement of left-ventricular systolic function in patie nts after acute myocardial infarction.
