The role of rhizobacteria in rice plants: Growth and mitigation of toxicity

Allelopathic compounds reduce the growth and productivity of upland rice plants, especially in consecutive plantations. The rhizobacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens BRM-32111 and Burkholderia pyrrocinia BRM-32113 have been recorded as growth promoters in rice. This study was developed to understand the effect of the application of rhizobacteria on upland rice plants in consecutive plantations. Experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications of four treatments: rice seed inoculated with P. fluorescens BRM-32111, rice seed inoculated with B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113(both sown on soil with rice residue), non-inoculated plants sown on soil with rice residue(control with residue(WR)), and non-inoculated plants on soil with no residue(NR). Roots and seedling growth were adversely affected by allelopathic compounds in control WR plants. Plants inoculated with rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 or B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 induced an increase of 88% in biomass, 3% in the leaf area, 40% in length, 67% in root biomass, 21% in chlorophyll a, 53% in chlorophyll(a+b), 50% in rate of carbon assimilation(A), 227% in A/rubisco carboxylation efficiency(ci) and 63% in water use efficiency(WUE) compared to control WR plants. These results indicate that rhizobacteria P. fluorescens BRM-32111 and B. pyrrocinia BRM-32113 increase the tolerance of rice plants to stress from allelochemicals. There are possible practical agricultural applications of these results for mitigating the effects of environmental allelochemistry on upland rice.

Photoluminescence, scintillation and thermally-stimulated luminescence properties of Tb-doped 12caO·7Al2O3 single crystals grown by FZ method

Tb-doped 12caO·7Al_2O_3（Tb：c12A7） crystals were synthesized by the floating zone（FZ） method and the photoluminescence（PL）, scintillation and thermally-stimulated luminescence（TSL） properties were investigated. The photoluminescence（PL） emission spectra and PL decay time profiles were investigated by using Quantaurus-tau（Hamamatsu）. The scintillation spectra and decay time profiles were measured by using our laboratory-constructed set-up under X-ray irradiation. Finally, TSL glow curve was measured by using Nanogray TL-2000 with the heating rate of 1 °c/s. In PL and scintillation, emission peaks were observed at 493, 543, 587 and 620 nm due to the 4f-4f transitions of Tb3~＋. Decay time constants of the emission by PL and scintillation appeared to be different, and the measured values were approximately 2.4 and 1.9 ms, respectively. After X-ray irradiations, the 0.5%（all Tb contents in this paper are in mole fraction） and 1.0% Tb-doped samples showed a single intense and broad glow peak around 100 oc while 1.2%–1.5% Tb-doped samples showed notable additional peak around 250 oc.

Direct visualization of the atomic structure in scanning transmission electron microscopy has led to a comprehensive understanding of the structure-property ***,a reliable characterization of the structural transition on a picometric scale is still challenging because of the limited spatial resolution and ***,we demonstrate that the primary segmentation of atomic signals from background,succeeded by a denoising process,enables structural analysis in a sub-pixel *** noise is eliminated using the block matching and three-dimensional filtering with Anscombe transformation,and remnant noise is removed via morphological filtering,which results in an increase of peak signal-to-noise ratio from 7 to 11 *** the centroids of atomic columns segmented via K-means clustering,an unsupervised method for robust thresholding,achieves an average error of less than 0.7 pixel,which corresponds to 4.6 *** study will contribute to a profound understanding of the local structural dynamics in crystal structures.

Effects of Sn addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded Mg-Bi binary alloy

We investigated the effects of Sn addition on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of an extruded Mg-Bi binary alloy by comparing Mg-5 Bi(B5)and Mg-5 Bi-4 Sn(BT54).Both the extruded alloys exhibit a partially recrystallized grain structure with a strong extrusion fiber texture and numerous Mg3Bi2 ***,the addition of Sn significantly decreases the average grain size of the extruded alloy from 123.9 to 75.2μ*** Sn solute atoms inhibit the activity of dislocation slip,which reduces the internal strain energy accumulated in the dynamically recrystallized(DRXed)grains during ***,this reduced strain energy leads to the decrease in the DRXed grain size owing to weakened grain growth during natural *** extruded BT54 alloy exhibits higher tensile strength and ductility than the extruded B5 *** improvement in the strength by the Sn addition is attributed to the combined effects of grain refinement,Sn solute atoms,and increased dislocation *** formation of{10-11}and{10-11}-{10-12}twins during tension is suppressed by the grain refinement,thereby improving the tensile elongation considerably.

Improvement in bias current redistribution in superconducting strip ion detectors with parallel configuration

In time-of-flight mass spectrometry（TOF MS）, superconducting strip ion detectors（SSIDs） in the parallel configuration are promising for ideal ion detection with a nanosecond-scale time response and a practical large sensitive area. In the parallel configuration, the bias current in one strip is diverted into other parallel strips after each detection event. Under high bias current conditions, the diverted bias current induces cascade switching of all parallel strips. Studies show that cascade switching degrades the ion count rate of SSIDs made from niobium and hence is disliked in TOF MS applications. To suppress the bias current redistribution, we connected resistors in a series with the individual parallel strips using aluminum-bonding wires. Their effect was studied by measuring the pulse height distributions.

A quiet place:The impact of the word"quiet"on clinical workload

Purpose:This study aimed to determine the impact of uttering the word"quiet"on clinical workload during the overnight otolaryngology call shift and understand the factors contributing to resident *** and Methods:A multicenter,single-blind,randomized-controlled trial was conducted.A total of 80 overnight call shifts covered by a pool of 10 residents were randomized to the quiet or to the control *** the start of shift,residents were asked to state aloud,"Today will be a quiet night"(quiet group)or"Today will be a good night"(control group).clinical workload,as measured by number of consults,was the primary *** measures included number of sign-out tasks,unplanned inpatient and operating room visits,number of phone calls and hours of sleep,and self-perceived ***:There was no difference in the number of total(P=0.23),nonurgent(P=0.18),and urgent(P=0.18)*** at signout,total phone calls,unplanned inpatient visits,and unplanned operating room visits did not differ between the control and quiet *** there were more unplanned operating room visits in the quiet group(29,80.6%)compared to the control group(34,94.4%),this was not found to be significant(P=0.07).The majority of residents reported feeling"not busy"during control nights(18,50.0%)compared to feeling"somewhat busy"during quiet nights(17,47.2%;P=0.42).conclusion:contrary to popular belief,there is no clear evidence that uttering the word"quiet"significantly increases clinical workload.

The extrudability,microstructural characteristics,and tensile properties of the Mg–5Bi–3Al(BA53)alloy are investigated herein by comparing them with those of a commercial Mg–8Al–0.5 Zn(AZ80)*** AZ80 is extruded at 400℃,severe hot cracking occurs at exit speeds of 4.5 m/min or *** contrast,BA53 is successfully extruded without any surface cracking at 400℃ and at high exit speeds of 21–40 m/*** extruded at 3 m/min(AZ80–3)and 40 m/min(BA53–40),both AZ80 and BA53 exhibited completely recrystallized microstructures with abasal ***,BA53–40 has a coarser grain structure owing to grain growth promoted by the high temperature in the deformation ***80–3 contains a continuous network of Mg_(17)Al_(12) particles along the grain boundaries,which form via static precipitation during natural air-cooling after the material exits the extrusion ***53–40 contains coarse Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles aligned parallel to the extrusion direction along with numerous uniformly distributed fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) ***80–3 has higher tensile strength than BA53–40 because the relatively finer grains and larger number of solute atoms in AZ80–3 result in stronger grain-boundary and solid-solution hardening effects,*** BA53 is extruded at a high temperature and extrusion speed of 400℃ and 40 m/min,respectively,the extruded material has a high tensile yield strength of 188 *** can be primarily attributed to the large particle hardening effect resulting from the numerous fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles.

Elucidating the evolution of long-period stacking ordered phase and its effect on deformation behavior in the as-cast Mg-6Gd-1Zn-0.6Zr alloy

Herein,the evolution of long-period stacking ordered(LPSO)phases in the as-cast Mg-6Gd-1Zn-0.6Zr(wt.%)alloy are investigated via transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and atom probe tomography(APT).The TEM results reveal that two types of LPSO phase(a bulky interdendritic phase and a plate-like matrix LPSO phase)are formed in the as-cast *** of the LPSO phases are confirmed to be of the 14H type,with a smaller proportion being of the 18R ***,the APT results reveal that the composition of the interdendritic LPSO phase is closer to that of the ideal 14H phase compared to the matrix LPSO phase,and both the interdendritic and matrix LPSO phases exhibit a Gd/Zn ratio of 2.5,thereby indicating a deficient Zn content compared to the ideal 14H phase(i.e.,1.3).In addition,the influence of the LPSO phases on the deformation behavior is investigated at different compressive plastic strains using electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)analysis to reveal twinning and slip behavior during *** results indicate that the LPSO phase induces additional work hardening in the late stage of deformation via the suppression of{1011}compressive twinning and the activation of non-basal slip systems.

OBJEcTIVE:To evaluate the sternocleidomastoid and the descending portion of the trapezius muscles in terms of electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold in women with chronic cervical pain after acupuncture ***:Twenty-five women,aged 18-50 years[(31±3)years],with chronic neck and temporomandibular disorder participated in the *** electromyographic activity of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the descending portion of the trapezius muscle were recorded at rest,during shoulder elevation,(left and right)rotation of the neck and crucifix *** voluntary contraction was used to normalize the electromyographic activity *** points used for acupuncture were Jiache(ST 6),Xiaguan(ST 7),Quanliao(SI 18),Tinggong(SI 19),Yifeng(TE-17),Fengchi(GB 20),Renzhong(GV 26),Yangbai(GB-14),and points of the lower and upper limbs:Tai chong(LV 3),Zusanli(ST 36),Sanyinjiao(SP 6),Kunlun(BL 60),He Gu(LI4)and Yanglingquan(GB 34).The treatment course was 10 sessions,30 min long per session,and twice a *** final electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold data collection were performed 15 d after treatment ***:The normalized electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold data were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis using t-test(Pcant difference was observed during shoulder elevation for the left trapezius muscle,during neck rotation from the right side to the left,and pressure pain threshold for the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles,bilaterally,after the acupuncture ***:The acupuncture treatment improved the neck muscles in terms of electromyographic activity and increased the tolerance to chronic pain in women.

Pear pomace water extract reduces adiposity in vivo and in vitro by activating the AMPK-dependent pathway

Objective: To explore the inhibitory effect of water extract from pear pomace on abdominal fat accumulation and its underlying mechanism in high fat diet-fed animals. Methods: Three groups of male c57 BL/6 J mice were fed with a 60% kcal fat diet for 8 weeks. Pear pomace water extract(200 or 400 mg/kg body weight) was administered once daily via oral gavage. To confirm the possibility of the water extract of pear pomace acting as an activator of adenosine 5’-monophosphateactivated protein kinase(AMPK), differentiation of 3 T3-L1 preadipocytes was induced in the presence of the water extract of pear pomace with or without compound c. Body weight, food efficacy ratio, insulin resistance, and adipogenic protein expression were measured. Moreover, in the 3 T3-L1 cells, lipid content and lipogenesis-related proteins were measured using Oil Red O staining and Western blotting ***: Body weight gain and total abdominal fat weight were reduced in mice treated with pear pomace water extract. Pear pomace water extract reduced fasting blood glucose and insulin, thereby reducing the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance. It also resulted in dose-dependent decreases in triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoproteincholesterol. The protein expression of p-AMPK increased, while the expression of AMPK-downstream proteins including PPAR-γ, c/EBPα, SREBP-1 c, Acc, and FAS decreased in the adipose tissue of mice treated with pear pomace water extract. Furthermore, the inhibition of AMPK by compound c blocked pear pomace water extract-induced reduction of lipid content and the expression of lipogenesis-related genes. conclusions: Pear pomace water extract prevents fat accumulation both in vivo and in vitro by activating AMPK.
