Norepinephrine plays an important role in motor functional recovery after a brain injury caused by ferrous chloride.Inhibition of norepinephrine release by clonidine is correlated with motor deficits after motor cortex injury.The aim of this study was to analyze the role ofα-adrenergic receptors in the restoration of motor deficits in recovering rats after brain damage.The rats were randomly assigned to the sham and injury groups and then treated with the following pharmacological agents at 3 hours before and 8 hours,3 days,and 20 days after ferrous chloride-induced cortical injury:saline,clonidine,efaroxan(a selective antagonist ofα-adrenergic receptors)and clonidine+efaroxan.The sensorimotor score,the immunohistochemical staining forα-adrenergic receptors,and norepinephrine levels were evaluated.Eight hours post-injury,the sensorimotor score and norepinephrine levels in the locus coeruleus of the injured rats decreased,and these effects were maintained 3 days post-injury.However,20 days later,clonidine administration diminished norepinephrine levels in the pons compared with the sham group.This effect was accompanied by sensorimotor deficits.These effects were blocked by efaroxan.In conclusion,an increase inα-adrenergic receptor levels was observed after injury.Clonidine restores motor deficits in rats recovering from cortical injury,an effect that was prevented by efaroxan.The underlying mechanisms involve the stimulation of hypersensitiveα-adrenergic receptors and inhibition of norepinephrine activity in the locus coeruleus.The results of this study suggest thatαreceptor agonists might restore deficits or impede rehabilitation in patients with brain injury,and therefore pharmacological therapies need to be prescribed cautiously to these patients.

Deep optics preconditioner for modulation-free pyramid wavefront sensing

The pyramid wavefront sensor(PWFS)can provide the sensitivity needed for demanding adaptive optics applications,such as imaging exoplanets using the future extremely large telescopes of over 30 m of diameter(D).However,its exquisite sensitivity has a limited linear range of operation,or dynamic range,although it can be extended through the use of beam modulation—despite sacrificing sensitivity and requiring additional optical hardware.Inspired by artificial intelligence techniques,this work proposes to train an optical layer—comprising a passive diffractive element placed at a conjugated Fourier plane of the pyramid prism—to boost the linear response of the pyramid sensor without the need for cumbersome modulation.We develop an end-2-end simulation to train the diffractive element,which acts as an optical preconditioner to the traditional least-square modal phase estimation process.Simulation results with a large range of turbulence conditions show a noticeable improvement in the aberration estimation performance equivalent to over 3λ∕D of modulation when using the optically preconditioned deep PWFS(DPWFS).Experimental results validate the advantages of using the designed optical layer,where the DPWFS can pair the performance of a traditional PWFS with 2λ∕D of modulation.Designing and adding an optical preconditioner to the PWFS is just the tip of the iceberg,since the proposed deep optics methodology can be used for the design of a completely new generation of wavefront sensors that can better fit the demands of sophisticated adaptive optics applications such as ground-to-space and underwater optical communications and imaging through scattering media.

Purpose:This meta-analytical study aimed to explore the effects of resistance training(rT) volume on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation in postmenopausal and older females.Methods:A systematic search was performed for randomized controlled trials in PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,and SciELO.randomized controlled trials with postmenopausal and older females that compared rT effects on body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation with a control group(CG) were included.Independent reviewers selected the studies,extracted the data,and performed the risk of bias and certainty of the evidence(Grading of recommendations,Assessment,Development,and Evaluation(GrADE)) evaluations.Total body and abdominal adiposity,blood lipids,glucose,and C-reactive protein were included for meta-analysis.A random-effects model,standardized mean difference(Hedges’ g),and 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were used for meta-analysis.results:Twenty randomized controlled trials(overall risk of bias:some concerns;GrADE:low to very low) with overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females were included.rT groups were divided into low-volume rT(LVrT,~44 sets/week) and high-volume rT(HVrT,~77 sets/week).Both rT groups presented improved body adiposity,metabolic risk,and inflammation when compared to CG.However,HVrT demonstrated higher effect sizes than LVrT for glucose(HVrT=-1.19;95%CI:-1.63 to-0.74;LVrT=-0.78;95%CI:-1.15 to-0.41) and C-reactive protein(HVrT=-1.00;95%CI:-1.32 to-0.67;LVrT=-0.34;95%CI,-0.63 to-0.04)) when compared to CG.Conclusion:Compared to CG,HVrT protocols elicit greater improvements in metabolic risk and inflammation outcomes than LVrT in overweight/obese postmenopausal and older females.

Unraveling the factors that determine variation of diversity in tropical mountain systems is a topic for debate in plant ecology.This is especially true in areas where topography is complex due to volcano elevational gradients and where forests are vulnerable to human activity.In this study we used a set of climatic(temperature,rainfall,and radiation solar),topographic(elevation,slope aspect,and slope orientation)and human disturbance variables to determine their effect on diversity and composition patterns of a tree community,considering three slope aspects of a tropical volcano in southeastern Mexico.We sampled trees in seventy 0.1-ha plots distributed on three slope aspects of the Tacanávolcano along an elevational gradient of 1500 to 2500 m.We determined diversity patterns(general tree richness,exponential of Shannon index,and pioneer species richness)with linear regression models,and for beta diversity,we used a dissimilarity index(within and between elevational bands 100 m wide).The effect of a set of environmental and human disturbance variables on tree diversity and community composition was analyzed with general linear models and multivariate analyses,respectively.We registered 2,949 individual trees belonging to 176 species and 58families.The average species richness and alpha diversity per plot were 13(standard deviation±6)and 9(±5),respectively.General tree richness and alpha diversity increased in the middle part(unimodal patterns)of the elevational gradient,but pioneer species richness decreased linearly with elevation.The variance explained by general linear models was greater in richness(32%)than in alpha diversity(25.3%).The most important predictor variables were temperature(elevational gradient),which explained the unimodal pattern(richness and alpha diversity increase at intermediate levels of temperature),and slope orientation,which explained the increase in richness and alpha diversity toward the geographic north.Only temperature had a significant effect on pioneer species diversity(22%).For

Average Current Control with Internal Model Control and real-time Frequency Decoupling for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems in Microgrids

Among hybrid energy storage systems(HESSs),battery-ultracapacitor systems in active topology use DC/DC power converters for their operations.HESSs are part of the solutions designed to improve the operation of power systems in different applications.In the residential microgrid applications,a multilevel control system is required to manage the available energy and interactions among the microgrid components.For this purpose,a rule-based power management system is designed,whose operation is validated in the simulation,and the performances of different controllers are compared to select the best strategy for the DC/DC converters.The average current control with internal model control and real-time frequency decoupling is proposed as the most suitable controller according to the contemplated performance parameters,allowing voltage regulation values close to 1%.The results are validated using real-time hardware-in-the-loop(HIL).These systems can be easily adjusted for other applications such as electric vehicles.

Sizing and Siting of Battery Energy Storage Systems:A Colombian Case

This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming(MILP)formulation for sizing and siting of battery energy storage systems(BESSs).The problem formulation seeks to minimize both operation costs and BESS investment.The proposed model includes restrictions of the conventional securityconstrained unit commitment problem,a piece-wise linear approximation to model power losses,and a linear model of hydro generation units.The proposed model is tested in a 6-bus test system and a 15-bus system representing the Colombian power system.For the two studied systems,simulation results show that the reduction of operation costs due to the installation of BESSs compensates the investments,under some of the considered technical cost cases.Additionally,results show that adequate sizing and siting of BESSs reduce renewable energy curtailment in the Colombian power system with high penetration of fluctuating renewable generation.

Immunological mechanisms of fecal microbiota transplantation in recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection

Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)is a successful method for treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile(C.difficile)infection(rCDI)with around 90%efficacy.Due to the relative simplicity of this approach,it is being widely used and currently,thousands of patients have been treated with FMT worldwide.Nonetheless,the mechanisms underlying its effects are just beginning to be understood.Data indicate that FMT effectiveness is due to a combination of microbiological direct mechanisms against C.difficile,but also through indirect mechanisms including the production of microbiota-derived metabolites as secondary bile acids and short chain fatty acids.Moreover,the modulation of the strong inflammatory response triggered by C.difficile after FMT seems to rely on a pivotal role of regulatory T cells,which would be responsible for the reduction of several cells and soluble inflammatory mediators,ensuing normalization of the intestinal mucosal immune system.In this minireview,we analyze recent advances in these immunological aspects associated with the efficacy of FMT.

Tuberculous pericarditis-a silent and challenging disease:A case report

BACKGrOUND Tuberculous pericarditis(TP)remains a challenge for endemic countries.In developing countries,one to two percent of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis develops TP.CASE SUMMArY A 49-year-old woman presented with dyspnea,chest pain and dry cough.On physical examination,veiled heart sounds were found.The electrocardiogram showed low-voltage complexes and the transthoracic echocardiography revealed a large and free-looking pericardial effusion.The patient was taken for an open pericardiotomy.The pericardial fluid revealed high levels of adenosine deaminase and Ziehl-Neelsen stain showed acid-fast bacilli.Polymerase chain reaction study for Mycobacterium tuberculosis in pericardial fluid was positive.The patient received tetra conjugate management with adequate clinical response after the first week of treatment and resolution of fever and chest pain.CONCLUSION In cases of TP,obtaining pericardial fluid and/or pericardial biopsy is the most efficient strategy to confirm the diagnosis.Early diagnosis of this entity will allow physicians to initiate timely treatment,avoid complications and improve the patient's clinical outcome,so we consider the description of this case pertinent and its review in the literature.

Multi-conductor Line Models for Harmonic Load-flow Calculations in LV Networks with High Penetration of PV Generation

Low-voltage(LV) distribution networks are unbalanced and present loads with nonlinear behavior, which introduce harmonics in the networks. The predictable increase in photovoltaic microgeneration(PV μG) accentuates this unbalanced characteristic, as well as poses new technical problems,namely voltage rise and reverse power flow. To accurately account for the distributed PV and loads in the LV network, unbalanced three-phase power flow algorithms should be utilized,where different approaches may be used to represent lines with various degrees of accuracy. The more accurate algorithm considers the electromagnetic coupling between the line conductors,whereas the simpler algorithm represents each conductor of the line as a single-phase line with pure resistive behavior. This paper aims to analyze the influence of the line model on the load flow in a highly unbalanced LV network with a high penetration of PV production, and considers the impact of the harmonics produced by nonlinear loads. Based on the results obtained,it is possible to identify the most suitable model to be used, depending on the study to be performed. Different scenarios of PV generation and loads are addressed in this paper.
