Floristic and Structural Analysis of Urban Tree Canopy: From Its Ecology to Its Social Issues

Currently, urban areas are the largest segment of the world’s population, and they can reach up to 80% of it in some countries. Understanding green areas is of paramount importance to also understand the population’s mental health and well-being, as well as to achieve ecological understanding and its impact on urban infrastructure. Thus, the aim of the present study is to carry out a survey on both urban afforestation structure and on its social impact on a Brazilian municipality. It also sought to understand the damages caused by these species to urban infrastructure in comparison to data collected in 2009, to assess forest coverage in this municipality and tree planting underutilized capacity. Accordingly, all the streets in this municipality’s urban area, the botanical data of each tree and its damage to the city’s infrastructure and phytosanitary conditions were surveyed (from 1 to 5). Data were compared to those from the 2009 census, and social issues were analyzed. In total, 5044 individuals belonging to 189 species were recorded. The most often found species were Lagerstroemia indica and Murraya paniculata. Out of the total number of trees, 458 trees scored at least one score “5” in one of the criteria, and this number represents 8.9% of the total of the trees. L. indica was the species accounting for the highest rates of phytosanitary and infrastructure issues. Data comparison evidenced that urban tree canopy lost 25% of its vegetation between the two measurements taken herein, but the number of species has increased. When it comes to damages, many trees started showing phytosanitary issues or damage to urban infrastructure.

Effect of thermo-mechanical conditions during constrained friction processing on the particle refinement of AM50 Mg-alloy phases

Constrained Friction Processing(CFP)is a novel solid-state processing technique suitable for lightweight materials,such Mg-and *** technique enables grain size refinement to fine or even ultrafine *** this study,the effect of CFP on the microstructural refinement of AM50 rods is investigated in terms of particle size and morphology of the eutectic and secondary phases originally present in the base material,in particular the eutecticβ-Mg_(17)Al_(12)and Al-Mn *** that purpose,as-cast and solution heat-treated base material and processed samples were *** Al_(8)Mn_(5) intermetallic phase was identified as the main secondary phase present in all samples before and after the processing.A notorious refinement of these particles was observed,starting from particles with an average equivalent length of a few micrometers to around 560 nm after the *** refinement of the secondary phase refinement is attributed to a mechanism analogous to the attrition comminution,where the combination of temperature increase and shearing of the material enables the continuous breaking of the brittle intermetallic particles into smaller *** for the eutectic phase,the results indicate the presence of the partially divorcedβ-Mg_(17)Al_(12)particles exclusively in the as-cast base material,indicating that no further phase transformations regarding the eutectic phase,such as dynamic precipitation,occurred after the *** the case of the processed as-cast material analyzed after the CFP,the thermal energy generated during the processing led to temperature values above the solvus limit of the eutectic phase,which associated with the mechanical breakage of the particles,enabled the complete dissolution of this ***,CFP was successfully demonstrated to promote an extensive microstructure refinement in multiple aspects,in terms of grain sizes of theα-Mg phase and presence and morphology of the Al-Mn and eutecticβ-Mg_(17)Al_(12).

Physical inactivity is a well-established risk factor for chronic diseases,such as cardiovascular disease,cancer,and diabetes *** is a growing awareness that physical inactivity should also be regarded as a risk factor for acute respiratory infections(ARIs).ARIs,such as the common cold,influenza,pneumonia,and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),are among the most pervasive diseases on earth and cause widespread morbidity and *** in support of the linkage between ARIs and physical inactivity has been strengthened during the COVID-19 pandemic because of increased scientific ***-scale studies have consistently reported that the risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes is elevated in cohorts with low physical activity and/or physical fitness,even after adjusting for other risk *** lowered risk for severe COVID-19 and other ARIs in physically active groups is attributed to exercise-induced immunoprotective effects,including enhanced surveillance of key immune cells and reduced chronic *** consensus groups,including those who submitted the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans,have not yet given this area of research the respect that is *** is time to add“reduced risk for ARIs”to the“Exercise is Medicine”list of physical activity-related health benefits.

Destabilization of bitumen-coated fine solids in oil through water-assisted flocculation using biomolecules extracted from guar beans

Non-aqueous extraction(NAE)of bitumen from oil sands has been gaining great attention from both the industry and academia as an alternative to the water-based extraction.A fine solids removal step is important for a NAE process in order to obtain high-quality bitumen product,which,however,remains a great challenge to reduce the fine solids content to the desired ***,we introduce a strategy of destabilizing the bitumen-coated silica particles in toluene with the addition of water and biomolecules extracted from Cyamopsiste tragonolobuosr ***.,i.e.,high molecular weight guar gum(HGG)and low molecular weight guar gum(LGG),*** virtue of sedimentation tests and focused beam reflectance measurement analysis,we demonstrate that the introduced water droplets modified with these biomolecules can facilitate the settling of the solid particles in toluene although the underlying mechanisms differ between these two biomolecule ***,in the case of LGG,the added water droplets with the interfacial amphiphilic LGG can strengthen the attachment of solid particles from bulk toluene to the LGG *** research work provides useful insight into the development of effective approaches for destabilization and removal of bitumen-coated fine solids from NAE bitumen.

Peripheral nerve injuries （PNI） are a major clinical prob- lem. In general, PNI results from motor vehicle accidents, lacerations with sharp objects, penetrating trauma （gunshot wounds） and stretching or crushing trauma and fractures. It is estimated that PNI occur in 2.8% of trauma patients and this number reaches 5% if plexus and root lesions are in- cluded. However, due to lack of recent epidemiological stud- ies, these data probably underestimate the actual number of nerve injuries

Modeling uncertainties of reservoir flushing simulations

Every dam or barrage construction affects the watercourse and the retention of sediment that previously was carried by the river, which can lead to siltation of the reservoir and obstruction of water intakes over time, reducing their capacities. However, the information available regarding the effect of sediment and drawdown parameters, sediment management at reservoirs, as well as different equational approaches,is scarce. The current research aims to evaluate the effect of parameters associated with numerical modeling of sediment management in reservoirs considering scenarios with different drawdowns,transport equations, sediment size distributions, and thickness of the initial sediment layer. The case study of the Aimore s Hydropower Plant(HPP) is used, applying the Delft3D-FLOW model for twodimensional modeling. All parameters influenced the volume of mobilized sediment, among which the initial layer thickness was the parameter that resulted in the greatest changes in simulated results. In general, the results show that the uncertainties in the input parameters outweigh the uncertainties between the techniques, which found large variations in results when evaluating the use of different transport equations. These results indicate the importance of proper estimation of model parameters for predicting effects with accuracy and the need for such studies before planning and management operations are evaluated to avoid environmental harm and energy waste.

High molecular weight guar gum assisted settling of fine solids in diluted bitumen:Effect of solvents

As water-based extraction technologies for producing bitumen from oil sands have received increasing environmental concerns,developing non-aqueous extraction(NAE)technique is of both fundamental and practical ***,the relatively high concentration of fine solids trapped in the extracted bitumen presents an obstacle for pipeline transport as well as upgrading and refining *** research attempts to provide a solution to fine solids removal without using synthetic additives or affecting bitumen recovery from NAE ***,naturally hydrophilic additives(i.e.,water and high molecular weight guar gum(HGG)produced from Cyamopsiste tragonolobuosr ***.)were introduced to promote the settling of fine solids suspended in bitumen-solvent solution,and the effects of solvents(i.e.,toluene,cyclohexane and their mixtures)were systematically *** size distribution analyzed by the focused beam reflectance measurements confirmed that the addition of water and HGG could promote the agglomeration and settling of fine solids in all solvents ***,the size range and quantity of the agglomerates vary significantly with the solvent's aromatic *** mixtures demonstrate a superior performance on removing fine solids from bitumen over single ***,in a 3:2 toluene/cyclohexane mixture,the solid content was lowered from 0.66 wt%to 0.09 wt%.
