ong>Background:ong> Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive and neurodegenerative disorder characterized by deterioration of brain functions. Psychosocial interventions such as music and photographic stimuli may contribute to cognitive and sensory exercise or rehabilitation. Objective: Evaluate musical and photographic stimuli in elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease. Methods: It is an uncontrolled clinical trial, before-after type, eleven subjects composing the sample. Participants were submitted to Katz Index, Autobiographical Memory Test, GDS-15, Mini-Mental State Examination. The collection instruments were used on the first and last day of intervention, individually. There were 2 sessions in the week with duration of 50 minutes totaling 20 sessions. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics and as variables expressed as mean standard deviation. Results: There was a significant effect of cognitive activity (P , it was observed that a small advance (P = 0.05) of the daily life activities. With the analysis of GDS-15, it is verified that they are more effective for the increase of the previous self-estimation of the therapy (P = 0.94). In the application of the AMT, it is observed that there was a better recruitment of the memory for the neutral words. Conclusion: Musical and photographic stimuli had a positive effect on the cognitive level, daily life activities and autobiographical memory in seniors with Alzheimer’s disease.

N-acetylcysteine modulates angiogenesis and vasodilation in stomach such as DNA damage in blood of portal hypertensive rats

AIM: To evaluate the antioxidant effect of N-acetylcysteine(NAC) on the stomach of rats with portal ***: Twenty-four male Wistar rats weighing ± 250 g were divided into four experimental groups(n =6 each): Sham-operated(So),So + NAC,partial portal vein ligation(PPVL),and PPVL + NAC. Treatment with NAC in a dose of 10 mg/kg(i.p.) diluted in 0.6 m L of saline solution was administered daily for 7 d starting 8 d after the surgery. Animals from the PPVL and So group received saline solution(0.6 m L) for the same period of time as the PPVL + NAC and So + NAC group. on the 15 th day the animals were anesthetized and we evaluated portal pressure by cannulating mesenteric artery. After,we removed the stomach for further analysis. We performed immunohistochemical analysis for endothelial nitric oxide synthase(e NoS),vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),and nitrotirosine(NTT) proteins in stomach. We also evaluated e NoS and VEGF by Western blot analysis and assessed DNA damage in blood samples by the comet ***: The portal hypertension group exhibited increases in portal pressure when compared to So group(29.8 ± 1.8 vs 12.0 ± 0.3 mm Hg)(P observed when we compared the e NoS(56.8 ± 3.7 vs 13.46 ± 2.8 pixels)(P on by immunohistochemistry of the PPVL animals with the So group. The expression of e NoS(0.39 ± 0.03 vs 0.25 ± 0.03 a.μ)(P o evaluated by Western blot analysis,and we observed an increase of both proteins on PPVL animals. We also evaluated the DNA damage by comet assay,and observed an increase on damage index and damage frequency on those animals. Rainfall simulators(RS)have been used,above all,to evaluate hydrological processes related to soil water infiltration,surface runoff and soil *** allow repeatability of rain application with different precipitation intensities in field and/or laboratory conditions and should produce events with physical characteristics similar to natural *** this manuscript,we carried out a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of studies with simulated rainfall in Brazil to assess the temporal evolution of publications,the main topics addressed and the degree of technological development of the *** searched for the terms“rainfall simulator”oR“simulated rainfall”AND“Brazil”in the Scopus,Web of Science,SciELo and Google Scholar *** found 143 articles published in the last 37 years(1985-2022).our findings indicate that the main research areas covered in papers are soil erosion(57.34%),soil water infiltration(24.47%),nutrient losses(9.8%)and RS development and calibration/assessment(8.39%).In recent years,the number of published papers in international high-impact factor journals has *** of the papers(49.65%)refer to studies carried out by institutions located in the south and southeast regions of ***,there is a large gap of studies on simulated rainfall in other regions of Brazil,where important biomes such as the Cerrado,Amazon,Caatinga,and their transitions are *** study informs research priorities on soil erosion under simulated rainfall and provides a bibliographic database that can assist in more detailed future analyses.

The three main components of the media layer of the aorta are elastic fibers,collagen fibers and smooth muscle cells(SMC).[1]This layer’s elastic properties are major determinants of its biomechanics in health and disease states.[2,3]Age-related changes in such elastic properties are associated with altered hemodynamic parameters,such as systolic hypertension,[4,5]and end-organ damage,[6,7]and are thought to result from changes of its main components.

Acute calculous cholecystitis(ACC) is the most frequent complication of cholelithiasis and represents one-third of all surgical emergency hospital admissions, many aspects of the disease are still a matter of debate. Knowledge of the current evidence may allow the surgical team to develop practical bedside decision-making strategies, aiming at a less demanding procedure and lower frequency of complications. In this regard, recommendations on the diagnosis supported by specific criteria and severity scores are being implemented, to prioritize patients eligible for urgency surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the best treatment for ACC and the procedure should ideally be performed within 72h. Early surgery is associated with better results in comparison to delayed surgery. In addition, when to suspect associated common bile duct stones and how to treat them when found are still debated. The antimicrobial agents are indicated for high-risk patients and especially in the presence of gallbladder necrosis. The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and in some cases with antifungal agents is related to better prognosis. Moreover, an emerging strategy of not converting to open, a difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy and performing a subtotal cholecystectomy is recommended by adept surgical teams. Some authors support the use of percutaneous cholecystostomy as an alternative emergency treatment for acute Cholecystitis for patients with severe comorbidities.

Somatic cell counts （SCCs） levels indicate the occurrence of infections in goat udders and are related to the productivity of goat milk, cheese and yoghurt. This work presents a segmentation method for counting somatic cells in goat milk images, intending to detect an infection known as mastiffs, which is the major cause of loss in dairy farming. The image segmentation procedure is devised by using the lab color space and the watershed transform. A large number of samples under variable preparation conditions are treated with the proposed method. A comparison between manual and the proposed technique is presented. Promising results indicates that video-microscopy systems may be employed to develop automated SCC for goat milk.

BACKGRoUND Acute decompensation(AD)of cirrhosis is related to systemic inflammation and elevated circulating *** this context,biomarkers of inflammation,such as calprotectin,may be of prognostic *** To evaluate serum calprotectin levels in patients hospitalized for complications of *** This is a prospective cohort study that included 200 subjects hospitalized for complications of cirrhosis,20 outpatients with stable cirrhosis,and 20 healthy *** calprotectin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbant *** Calprotectin levels were higher among groups with cirrhosis when compared to healthy *** median calprotectin was related to Child-Pugh C,ascites,and hepatic *** calprotectin was related to acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF)and infection in the bivariate,but not in multivariate *** was not associated with survival among patients with ACLF;however,in patients with AD without ACLF,higher calprotectin was associated with a lower 30-d survival,even after adjustment for chronic liver failure-consortium(CLIF-C)AD score.A high-risk group(CLIF-C AD score≥60 and calprotectin≥580 ng/mL)was identified,which had a 30-d survival(27.3%)similar to that of patients with grade 3 ACLF(23.3%).CoNCLUSIoN Serum calprotectin is associated with prognosis in patients with AD without ACLF and may be useful in clinical practice to early identify patients with a very low short-term survival.

Mycelial Growth of Pleurotus Spp in Se-Enriched Culture Media

Selenium (Se) is an essential element to human. However, this element can be in low content in soil of some regions. Se deficiency may cause Keshan disease, thyroid dysfunction and osteoarthritis. The Se-enriched cereals are an interesting way to prevent these diseases. But, recent studies have shown that Se-enriched mushrooms are a better Se source. This occurs due to the high capacity of the fungi to absorb and transform the inorganic Se to organic forms, which are more bioavailable. Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus eryngii are mushrooms species worldwide consumed and able to Se bioaccumulate. However, depending on the level of this element, it can be toxic for the fungus. Here we showed that the presence of the Se in culture medium decreases fungal growth rate, hyphae diameter and septum distance and causes alteration in color of colony. A garlic strong smell was directly proportional to Se level. P. eryngii was more tolerant to Se than P. ostreatus. So, it is important to screen this element level for Se-enriched mushroom production.

Flash microbiocide:A Rapid and Economic Method for Determination of MBC and MFC

Although nowadays there are methods for determining the Minimal Bactericidal Concentration and Minimal Fungicidal Concentration, it is indispensable that?the establishment of innovative methodologies?could be more practical and cheaper. The new methodology Flash microbiocide is an assay in which one aliquot from 96 well plate of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration test is transferred to another plate containing different culture medium. The correspondence with the reference methods described in the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS-CLSI) document M26-A was achieved, denoting the efficiency of this fast and simple method.

ong>objectiveong>: To analyze the evidence in the evolution of scientific production on the factors associated with curative practices of the umbilical stump. Materials and Methods: The study data collection took place in April 2017. The electronic databases used to search the articles were: PubMed (National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health) and VHL (Virtual Health Library). We used the keywords “perinatal care”, “umbilical cord”, “patient care team”, “neonatology”, “newborn”, in the Portuguese, English and Spanish languages, accompanied by the expression AND and selected through DeCS (Descriptors in Health Sciences). Results: A final sample of 9 articles was obtained from the PubMed and VHL databases, which met the inclusions criteria. It has been found that traditional umbilical stump care practices are still present in many communities, however, have been replaced by appropriate practices, the most recommended being: chlorhexidine 4% sanitation, soap and water and alcohol antisepsis 70%. Conclusions: There is a need for multi-professional involvement, approaching these women since pregnancy, with detailed information and accessible language about proper care with the newborn and the umbilical stump.
