Heart rate is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes: The diabetes heart study

AIM To assess the association of resting heart rate with allcause and cardiovascular disease(CVD) mortality in the Diabetes Heart Study(DHS).METHODS Out of a total of 1443 participants recruited into the DHS, 1315 participants with type 2 diabetes who were free of atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia during the baseline exam were included in this analysis. Heart rate was collected from baseline resting electrocardiogram and mortality(all-cause and CVD) was obtained from state and national death registry. kaplan-Meier(k-M) and Cox proportional hazard analyses were used to assess the *** The mean age, body mass index(BMI) and systolic blood pressure(SBP) of the cohort were 61.4 ± 9.2 years, 32.0 ± 6.6 kg/m2, and 139.4 ± 19.4 mmHg respectively. Fiftysix percent were females, 85% were whites, 15% were blacks, 18% were smokers. The mean ± SD heart rate was 69.8(11.9) beats per minute(bpm). After a median follow-up time of 8.5 years(maximum follow-up time is 14.0 years), 258 participants were deceased. In k-M analysis, participants with heart rate above the median had a significantly higher event rate compared with those below the median(log-rank P = 0.0223). A one standard deviation increase in heart rate was associated with allcause mortality in unadjusted(hazard ratio 1.16, 95%CI: 1.03-1.31) and adjusted(hazard ratio 1.20, 95%CI: 1.05-1.37) models. Similar results were obtained with CVD mortality as the outcome of *** Heart rate is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in this population with type 2 diabetes. In this study, a 1-SD increase in heart rate was associated with a 20% increase in risk suggesting that additional prognostic information may be gleaned from this ubiquitously collected vital sign.

Due to a paucity of surveys in northern Indochina and lack of international collaborations among neighboring countries, recognized distributional ranges for many amphibian and reptile species end at the political borders for some countries, despite seemingly continuous suitable habitat spanning the region. Combining both morphological and genetic data, we report the first discovery of Japalura chapaensis, a rare agamid lizard believed previously to be endemic to northern Vietnam only, along the border region of southeastern Yunnan Province,China. To facilitate future research on the genus Japalura sensu lato in Indochina, we provide detailed descriptions of additional specimens of this rare species, including the first description of coloration in life and an expanded diagnosis, and discuss the species boundary of J. chapaensis with respect to its congeners.

A growing body of research supports that members of the vitamin E family are not redundant with respect to their biological *** oil derived from Elaeis guineensis represents the richest source of the lesser characterized vitamin E,α-*** of 8 naturally occurring and chemically distinct vitamin E analogs,α-tocotrienol possesses unique biological activity that is independent of its potent antioxidant *** developments inα-tocotrienol research demonstrate neuroprotective properties for the lipid-soluble vitamin in brain tissue rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids（PUFAs）.Arachidonic acid（AA）,one of the most abundant PUFAs of the central nervous system,is highly susceptible to oxidative metabolism under pathologic *** from the membrane phospholipid bilayer by cytosolic phospholipase A,AA is metabolized by both enzymatic and nonenzymatic pathways.A number of neurodegenerative conditions in the human brain are associated with disturbed PUFA metabolism of AA,including acute ischemic *** oil-derivedα-tocotrienol at nanomolar concentrations has been shown to attenuate both enzymatic and nonenzymatic mediators of AA metabolism and *** a concentration basis,this represents the most potent of all biological functions exhibited by any natural vitamin E *** such therapeutic potential,the scientific literature on tocotrienols accounts for roughly 1%of the total literature on vitamin E,thus warranting further investment and investigation.

Resection margin influences the outcome of patients with bilobar colorectal liver metastases

AIMTo evaluate the outcome of patients with bilobar colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) and identify clinico-pathological variables that influenced survival. METHODSPatients with bilobar CRLM were identified from a prospectively maintained hepatobiliary database during the study period (January 2010-June 2014). Collated data included demographics, primary tumour treatment, surgical data, histopathology analysis and clinical outcome. Down-staging therapy included Oxaliplatin- or Irinotecan- based regimens, and Cetuximab was also used in patients that were k-RAS wild-type. Response to neo-adjuvant therapy was assessed at the multi-disciplinary team meeting and considered for surgery if all macroscopic CRLM were resectable with a clear margin while preserving sufficient liver parenchyma. RESULTSOf the 136 patients included, thirty-two (23.5%) patients were considered inoperable and referred for palliative chemotherapy, and thirty-four (25%) patients underwent liver resection. Seventy (51.4%) patients underwent down-staging therapy, of which 37 (52.8%) patients responded sufficiently to undergo liver resection. Patients that failed to respond to down-staging therapy (n = 33, 47.1%) were referred for palliative therapy. There was a significant difference in overall survival between the three groups (surgery vs down-staging therapy vs inoperable disease, P P P = 0.017). On multi-variate analysis, R0 resection (P = 0.030) and female (P = 0.036) gender significantly influenced overall survival. CONCLUSIONPatients undergoing liver resection with bilobar CRLM have a significantly better survival outcome. R0 resection is associated with improved disease-free and overall survival in this patient group.

Acute Post-Activation Potentiation Effects of Heavy High-Pulls on Clean Performance

Aim The concept of post-activation potentiation(PAP)is still novel from a training perspective and lacks breadth relative to weightlifting *** The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of a conditioning activity(clean high pulls)on the performance of a main activity(clean)after the conditioning *** Eleven volunteers who engaged in weightlifting(Male=5,Female=6)participated in two different testing ses-sions(experimental ***).Baseline measurements were taken following the *** testing condition was performed and additional measurements were taken at 30 s,2 min,4 min,6 min,8 min,10 min,and 12 min into recovery.A linear position transducer was used to collect peak power,peak velocity,and displacement of the barbell during the *** 2×8 repeated measures ANOVAs were used to analyze the data along with a paired samples t test between baseline and"best"*** There was no interaction or main effect for condition(P>0.05).However,there was a significant main effect for time(Pk power:experimental=1354.76 ±521.24 W *** 1216.03 ±492.30 W;peak velocity:experimental=2.66 ±0.44 m/s *** 2.50 ±0.44 m/s;displacement:experimental=111.07 ± 12.09 cm *** 107.01 ± 11.32 cm).Conclusions The findings of this study are in partial agreement with previous literature where the warm-up was probably enough to elicit ***,recommendations for future studies could include utilizing a more elite population and to ensure all potential participants can squat at least 2 x their body weight.

A new species of Mountain Dragon(Reptilia:Agamidae:Diploderma) from the D. dymondi complex in southern Sichuan Province, China

Despite continuous studies on the cryptic diversity of the Diploderma flaviceps complex in Southwest China for the pastdecade, little attention has been given to other widespreadcongeners in China. Combining both morphological and phylogenetic data, we describe a new species of Diplodermafrom populations identified previously as D. dymondi in thelower Yalong River Basin in southern Sichuan Province. Thenew species is morphologically most similar to D. dymondiand D. varcoae, but it can be differentiated by a considerablegenetic divergence and a suite of morphological characters,including having taller nuchal crest scales, smaller tympana,and a distinct oral coloration. Additionally, we discuss otherputative species complexes within the genus Diploderma inChina.

We describe nNPipe for the automated analysis of morphologically diverse catalyst materials. Automated imaging routines anddirect-electron detectors have enabled the collection of large data stacks over a wide range of sample positions at high temporalresolution. Simultaneously, traditional image analysis approaches are slow and hence unsuitable for large data stacks andconsequently, researchers have progressively turned towards machine learning and deep learning approaches. Previous studiesoften detail work on morphologically uniform material systems with clearly discernible features, limited workable image sizes andtraining data that may be biased due to manual labelling. The nNPipe data-processing method consists of two standaloneconvolutional neural networks that were exclusively trained on multislice image simulations and enables fast analysis of2048 × 2048 pixel images. Inference performance compared between idealised and real industrial catalytic samples and insightsderived from subsequent data analysis are placed into the context of an automated imaging scenario.

Reuse of liver grafts following the brain death of the initial recipient

AIM: To determine if there is a reasonable prospect of success of a re-use liver ***: We systematically searched for reports of liver graft re-use using electronic searches of PubMed and Web of knowledge. We performed hand searches of references lists of articles reporting re-use of ***: A systematic review of the literature reveals 28 liver transplantations using previously transplanted grafts. First and second recipients ranged in age from 4 to 72 years and 29 to 62 years respectively. Liver disease in the first recipient was varied including 5(18%) patients with fulminant liver failure who died subsequently of cerebral edema. The second transplanta-tion was performed after a median interval of 5 d(one day-13 years). Viral hepatitis was present in 3(11%) of the initial recipients and in 8(29%) of final recipients. Hepatocellular carcinoma was present in 6(21%) of the final recipients. Early survival after the final transplantation was 93%, whereas long-term survival was 78% with a mean follow-up of 23.3(3-120) ***: Outcomes of transplantation using previously transplanted grafts in this select population are similar to those seen with conventional grafts.
