Comparison of the demographic characteristics of pediatric and adult colorectal cancer patients: a national inpatient sample based analysis

Juvenile polyps are relatively common findings in children,while juvenile polyposis syndrome(JPS) is a rare hereditary syndrome entailing an increased risk of colorectal *** in BMPR1A or SMAD4 are found in roughly half of patients diagnosed with *** in PTeN gene are also found in patients with juvenile polyps and in Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome and Cowden *** previous reports have described microdeletions in chromosome 10q23 encompassing both PTeN and BMPR1A causing aggressive polyposis and malignancy in *** reports have also described extra-intestinal findings in most cases including cardiac anomalies,developmental delay and *** this report we describe a boy with a 5.75 Mb deletion of chromosome 10q23 and a 1.03 Mb deletion within chromosome band 1p31.3who displayed aggressive juvenile polyposis and multiple extra-intestinal anomalies including macrocephaly,developmental delay,short stature,hypothyroidism,atrial septal defect,ventricular septal defect and *** required colectomy at six years of age,and early colectomy was a common outcome in other children with similar *** to the aggressive polyposis and reports of dysplasia and even malignancy at a young age,we propose aggressive gastrointestinal surveillance in children with 10q23 microdeletions encompassing the BMPR1A and PTeN genes to include both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts,and also include a flowchart for an effective genetic testing strategy in children with juvenile polyposis.

Traumatic brain injury(TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide,with estimates indicating that -50% of the world's population will acquire a head injury at some point in their lifetime(Maas et al.,2017).Mild TBIs account for -80% of all reported cases,with up to 43% of all TBI patients reporting symptoms beyond 2 weeks *** of 2016,only 7% of preclinical TBI experiments included both male and female sexes,and fewer studies analyzed the data using sex as a biological variable(Spani et al.,2018).

effects of overburden characteristics on dynamic failure in underground coal mining

Dynamic failures, or ‘‘bumps", remain an imperative safety concern in underground coal mining, despite significant advancements in engineering controls. The presence of spatially discrete, stiff roof units are one feature that has been linked to these events. However, an empirical stratigraphic review indicates that no significant difference exists in the relative commonality of discrete units between bumping and non-bumping deposits. Instead an apparent relationship exists between reportable bumping and the overall stiffness of the host rock. However, this initial study is too simplistic to be conclusive; to weight the relative impact of changes in a single variable, such as the thickness or location of sandstone members, it must be examined in isolation—i.e., in a setting where all other variables are held *** modelling provides this setting, and the effects of variability in a stiff discrete member in a hypothetical longwall mining scenario are investigated within the context of three stratigraphic ‘‘types",Compliant, Intermediate and Stiff. A modelling experiment examines changes in rupture potential in stiff roof units for each stratigraphic type as discrete unit thickness and location are manipulated through a range of values. Results suggest that the stiff-to-compliant ratio of the host rock has an impact on the relative stress-inducing effects of discrete stiff members. In other words, it is necessary to consider both the thickness and the distance to the seam, within the context of the host rock, to accurately anticipate areas of elevated rupture-induced hazard; acknowledging the presence of a discrete unit within the overburden in general terms is an insufficient indicator of risk. This finding helps to refine our understanding of the role of individual stiff, strong roof members in bumping phenomena, and suggests that a holistic view of overburden lithology and site-specific numerical modelling may be necessary to improve miner safety.

Applying robust design to study the effects of stratigraphic characteristics on brittle failure and bump potential in a coal mine

Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals for specific pathogen free 6-week-old Hampshire-Yorkshire crossbred pigs

Background： Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals depend on many factors, including age. A review of the literature highlights the lack of reference intervals for 6-wk-old specific pathogen free （SPF） Hampshire-Yorkshire crossbred pigs. For translational research, 6-wk-old pigs represent an important animal model for both human juvenile colitis and diabetes mellitus type 2 given the similarities between the porcine and human gastrointestinal maturation process. The aim of this study was to determine reference intervals for hematological and biochemical parameters in healthy 6-wk-old crossbred pigs. Blood samples were collected from 66 clinically healthy Hampshire-Yorkshire pigs. The pigs were 6 wks old, represented both sexes, and were housed in a SPF facility. Automated hematological and biochemical analysis were performed using an ADVIA 120 Hematology System and a Cobas 6000 C501 Clinical Chemistry Analyzer. Results： Reference intervals were calculated using both parametric and nonparametric methods. The mean, median, minimum, and maximum values were calculated. Conclusion： As pigs are used more frequently as medical models of human disease, having reference intervals for commonly measured hematological and biochemical parameters in 6-wk-old pigs will be useful. The reference intervals calculated in this study will aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of both naturally occurring and experimentally induced disease. In comparison to published reference intervals for older non SPF pigs, notable differences in leukocyte populations, and in levels of sodium, potassium, glucose, protein, and alkaline phosphatase were observed.

This contribution describes development and application of a user-friendly finite element program,UT3PC, to address three important problems in underground coal mine design:(1) safety of main entries,(2) barrier pillar size needed for entry protection, and(3) safety of bleeder entries during the advance of an adjacent longwall *** the finite element method is by far the most popular engineering design tool of the digital age, widespread use by the mining community has been impeded by the relatively high cost of and the need for lengthy specialized training in numerical *** of UT3PC overcomes these impediments in three easy ***, a material properties file is prepared for the considered ***, mesh generation is automatic through an interactive process.A third and last step is simply execution of the *** using data from several western coal mines illustrate the ease of using the application for analysis of main entries, barrier pillars, and bleeder entry safety.

This review of the literature on small bowel carcinoma associated with Crohn's disease specifically addresses the incidence, risk factors, and protective factors which have been identified. It also reviews the clinical presentation, the current modalities of diagnosis, the pathology, treatment, and surveillance. Finally, the prognosis and future direction are addressed. Our experience with small bowel adenocarcinoma in Crohn's disease is reported. Readers will be provided with a better understanding of this rare and often poorly recognized complication of Crohn's disease.

Nitrogen enrichment alters carbon fluxes in a New england salt marsh

Introduction:Nitrogen enrichment of coastal salt marshes can induce feedbacks that alter ecosystem-level processes including primary production and carbon *** the rising interest in coastal blue carbon,the effects of chronic nutrient enrichment on blue carbon processes have rarely been measured in the context of experimental ***,we examined the ecosystem-level effects of nitrate(NO3)enrichment on the green-house gas dynamics of a Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt *** measured CO2 and CH4 fluxes using static chambers through two growing seasons in a salt marsh that was nitrogen-enriched for 13 years and compared fluxes to those from a reference ***:We found that nitrogen enrichment increased gross primary productivity(GPP)by 7.7%and increased ecosystem respiration(Recd)by 20.8%.However,nitrogen enrichment had no discernible effect on net ecosystem exchange(Nee).Taken together,these results suggest that nitrogen-induced stimulation of Reco could transform this salt marsh from a carbon sink into a source of carbon to the atmos ***:Our results complement prior findings of nitrogen enrichment weakening soil structure and organic matter stability in tidal salt marshes,suggesting that increased nutrient inputs have the potential to alter the carbon storage function of these ecosystems through enhanced microbial respiration of previously sequestered carbon.
