Thermodynamic analysis, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride: Study of its effect on pretreated rice husk

This work is focused on the determination of the optimal reaction conditions to synthesize the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride([EMIM][Cl]) and assess its suitability for the pretreatment of rice husk. The modified UNIFAC(UNIversal quasi-chemical Functional-group Activity Coefficients)approach for ionic liquids is used to develop a thermodynamic model that describes the reactive system methylimidazole(MIM), chloroethane(C_(2)H_(5)Cl) and [EMIM][Cl]. The model allows to study the phase equilibria coexistence(vapor–liquid equilibria and solid–liquid equilibria) and yields the theoretically optimal conditions to synthesize the ionic liquid. The model predictions are validated with the available experimental and reported data. By implementing the developed model, a simple way to synthesize ionic liquid [EMIM][Cl] was found allowing to study its influence on the structure and morphology of pretreated rice husk. The lignocellulosic materials involved in this study are characterized by their composition, enzymatic digestibility, scanning electron microscopy, and crystallinity. Compared to untreated material, [EMIM][Cl]-pretreated rice husk produces cellulose that can be efficiently enzymatic hydrolyzed with high sugar yields. This work offers a suitable methodology to include the synthesis and thermodynamics of the solvent media within the design of low-cost ionic liquids for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment.

This study is concerned with the three-dimensional(3D)stagnation-point for the mixed convection flow past a vertical surface considering the first-order and secondorder velocity *** the authors’knowledge,this is the first study presenting this very interesting *** partial differential equations for the flow problem are transformed into nonlinear ordinary differential equations(ODEs)by using appropriate similarity *** ODEs with the corresponding boundary conditions are numerically solved by utilizing the bvp4c solver in MATLAB programming *** effects of the governing parameters on the non-dimensional velocity profiles,temperature profiles,skin friction coefficients,and the local Nusselt number are presented in detail through a series of graphs and ***,it is reported that the reduced skin friction coefficient decreases for the assisting flow situation and increases for the opposing flow *** numerical computations of the present work are compared with those from other research available in specific situations,and an excellent consensus is *** exciting feature for this work is the existence of dual *** important remark is that the dual solutions exist for both assisting and opposing flows.A linear stability analysis is performed showing that one solution is stable and the other solution is not *** notice that the mixed convection and velocity slip parameters have strong effects on the flow *** effects are depicted in graphs and discussed in this *** obtained results show that the first-order and second-order slip parameters have a considerable effect on the flow,as well as on the heat transfer characteristics.

The high activity of metallic magnesium and alloys limits its potential in biomedical applications;in recent years,extensive efforts have been devoted to modulating this *** this work,we present Mg(OH)_(2) and TiO_(2)barrier coatings to reduce the degradation of magnesium alloy(Mg-ca-Zn)*** coatings were deposited by the anodization method and the spin-coating technique,*** anodized layer was coated with TiO_(2)generated from the hydrolysis of 3%weight of TTIP(Ti[OCH(CH_(3))_(2)]_(4),Titanium(Iv)isopropoxide)in 2-Propanol deposited by the spin-coating *** the degradation in Ringer’s solution by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and OCP revealed a 98%reduction in pittings in uncoated samples after 14 days of *** p H measurements revealed that the TiO_(2)coating reduced the alkalization of the physiological environment,keeping the pH at 6.0 *** vitro studies of two types of bacteria(*** and ***)exhibited zones of inhibition in the agar and activity bactericidal(kill time test).The mechanisms behind the improved degradation resistance and enhanced antibacterial activity are presented and discussed *** modification with Mg(OH)_(2)/TiO_(2)coatings is a promising strategy to control the biodegradation of magnesium implants for bone regeneration.

In this paper,an irregular displacement-based lensless wide-field microscopy imaging platform is presented by combining digital in-line holography and computational pixel super-resolution using multi-frame *** samples are illuminated by a nearly coherent illumination system,where the hologram shadows are projected into a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor-based imaging *** increase the resolution,a multi-frame pixel resolution approach is employed to produce a single holographic image from multiple frame observations of the scene,with small planar *** are resolved by a hybrid approach:(i)alignment of the LR images by a fast feature-based registration method,and(ii)fine adjustment of the sub-pixel information using a continuous optimization approach designed to find the global optimum *** method for phase-retrieval is applied to decode the signal and reconstruct the morphological details of the analyzed *** presented approach was evaluated with various biological samples including sperm and platelets,whose dimensions are in the order of a few *** obtained results demonstrate a spatial resolution of 1.55 μm on a field-of-view of<30 mm^(2).

Regulation of floral senescence in Arabidopsis by coordinated action of CONSTANS and jasmonate signaling

In Arabidopsis,photoperiodic flowering is controlled by the regulatory hub gene CONSTANS(CO),whereas floral organ senescence is regulated by the jasmonates(JAs).Because these processes are chronologically ordered,it remains unknown whether there are common regulators of both *** this study,we discovered that CO protein accumulates in Arabidopsis flowers after floral induction,and it displays a diurnal pattern in floral organs different from that in the *** observed that altered CO expression could affect flower senescence and abscission by interfering with JA response,as shown by petal-specific transcriptomic analysis as well as CO overexpression in JA synthesis and signaling *** found that CO has a ZIM(ZINC-FINGER INFLORESCENCE MERISTEM)like domain that mediates its interaction with the JA response repressor JAZ3(jasmonate ZIM-domain 3).Their interaction inhibits the repressor activity of JAZ3,resulting in activation of downstream transcription factors involved in promoting flower ***,we showed that CO,JAZ3,and the E3 ubiquitin ligase COI1(Coronatine Insensitive 1)could form a protein complex in planta,which promotes the degradation of both CO and JAZ3 in the presence of *** together,our results indicate that CO,a key regulator of photoperiodic flowering,is also involved in promoting flower senescence and abscission by augmenting JA signaling and *** propose that coordinated recruitment of photoperiodic and JA signaling pathways could be an efficient way for plants to chronologically order floral processes and ensure the success of offspring production.

Systemic phosphatidylcholine pretreatment protects canine esophageal mucosa during acute experimental biliary reflux

AIM： To characterize the consequences of short-term exposure to luminal bile on mucosal mast cell reactions in a canine model, and to determine the effects of systemic phosphatidylcholine pretreatment in this condition. METHODS： Twenty mongrel dogs were used for experiments. Group 1 （n =5） served as a salinetreated control, while in group 2 （n = 5） the esophagus was exposed to bile for 3 h. In group 3 （n =5） the animals were pretreated with 7-nitroindazole to inhibit the neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase. In group 4 （n = 5） phosphatidylcholine solution （50 rng/kg） was administered iv before the biliary challenge. Mucosal microcirculation was observed by intravital videomicroscopy. Myeloperoxidase and nitric oxide synthase activities, the degrees of mast cell degranulation and mucosal damage were evaluated via tissue biopsies. RESULTS： Exposure to bile evoked significant mast cell degranulation and leukocyte accumulation. The red blood cell velocity and the diameter of the postcapillary venules increased significantly. The tissue ATP content and constitutive nitric oxide synthase activity decreased, while the inducible nitric oxide synthase activity increased significantly as compared to the control values. 7-nitroindazole treatment significantly exacerbated the mucosal mast cell degranulation and tissue damage. Tn contrast, phosphatidylcholine pretreatment prevented the bile-induced ATP depletion, the inducible nitric oxide synthase and myeloperoxidase activity and the mast cell degranulation increased. CONCLUSION： The neuronal nitric oxide synthasemast cell axis plays an important role in the esophageal mucosal defense system. Systemic phosphatidylcholine pretreatment affords effective protection through ameliorating the bile-induced ATP depletion and secondary inflammatory reaction.

Microbial fuel cells(MFCs)are bio-electrochemical systems that can directly convert the chemical energy contained in an effluent into bioelectricity by the action of *** performance of these devices is heavily impacted by the choice of the material that forms the *** work focuses on the assessment of ferroelectric and photocatalytic materials as a new class of non-precious catalysts for MFC cathode construction.A series of cathodes based on mixed oxide solid solution of LiTaO_3with WO_3formulated as Li_(1-x)Ta_(1-x)W_xO_3(x=0,0.10,0.20 and0.25),were prepared and investigated in *** catalyst phases were synthesized,identified and characterized by DRX,PSD,MET and Uv–vis absorption *** cathodes were tested as photoelectrocatalysts in the presence and in the absence of visible light in devices fed with industrial *** results revealed that the catalytic activity of the cathodes strongly depends on the ratio of substitution of W^(6+)in the LiTaO_*** maximum power densities generated by the MFC working with this series of cathodes increased from60.45 mW·m^(-3)for x=0.00(LiTaO_3)to 107.2 mW·m^(-3)for x=0.10,showing that insertion of W^(6+)in the tantalate matrix can improve the photocatalytic activity of this ***,MFCs operating under optimal conditions were capable of reducing the load of chemical oxygen demand by 79%(COD_(initial)=1030 mg·L^(-1)).

In recent years,there has been a growing need to understand how salinity affects microbial communities in agricultural *** and bacterial community diversities and structures were investigated by high-throughput sequencing analysis of their 16S rRNA in two arable soils with low electrical conductivity(EC)(2.3 and 2.6 dS m^(-1))and a saline soil(EC=17.6 dS m^(-1)).The dominant bacterial phyla in the soils were Proteobacteria(relative abundance(RA)=46.2%),followed by Acidobacteria(RA=13.1%)and Actinobacteria(RA=10.0%),whereas Serratia(RA=6.0%)and Bacillus(RA=4.0%)were the dominant bacterial *** Nitrososphaera(53.5%)was the dominant archaeal phylotype in the arable soils,whereas Nitrosopumilus(RA=0.4%)dominated in the saline *** archaeal and bacterial community structures were different between the soils and significantly correlated with soil sand,arsenic,barium,and antimony contents,but not with soil salinity.

Plant Growth-Promoting Traits in Rhizobacteria of Heavy Metal-Resistant Plants and Their Effects on Brassica nigra Seed Germination

Phytoremediation is an emerging technology that uses plants and their associated microbes to clean up pollutants from the soil, water, and air. In order to select the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria （PGPR） for phytoremediation of heavy metal contamination, 60 bacterial strains were isolated from the rhizosphere of two endemic plants, Prosopis laevigata and Spharealcea angustifolia, in a heavy metal-contaminated zone in Mexico. These rhizobacterial strains were characterized for the growth at different pH and salinity, extracellular enzyme production, solubilization of phosphate, heavy metal resistance, and plant growth-promoting （PGP） traits, including production of siderophores and indol-3-acetic acid （IAA）. Overall, the obtained rhizobacteria presented multiple PGP traits. These rhizoba^teria were also resistant to high levels of heavy metals （including As as a metalloid）（up to 480 mmol L-1 As（v）, 24 mmol L-1 Pb（II）, 21 mmol L-1 Cu（II）, and 4.5 mmol L-1 Zn（II））. Seven rhizobacterial strains with the best PGP traits were identified as members of Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Curtobacterium, and Microbacterium, and were selected for further bioassay. The inoculation of Brassica nigra seeds with Microbacteriurn sp. CE3R2, Microbacterium sp. NE1R5, Curtobacterium sp. NM1R1, and Microbacterium sp. NM3E9 facilitated the root development; they significantly improved the B. nigra seed germination and root growth in the presence of heavy metals such as 2.2 mmol L-1 Zn（II）. The rhizobacterial strains isolated in the present study had the potential to be used as efficient bioinoculants in phytorremediation of soils contaminated with multiple heavy metals.

Therapeutic implications of colon cancer stem cells

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in many industrialized countries and is characterized by a heterogenic pool of cells with distinct differentiation patterns. Recently, the concept that cancer might arise from a rare population of cells with stem cell-like properties has received support with regard to several solid tumors, including colorectal cancer. According to the cancer stem cell hypothesis, cancer can be considered a disease in which mutations either convert normal stem cells into aberrant counterparts or cause a more differentiated cell to revert toward a stem cell-like behaviour; either way these cells are thought to be responsible for tumor generation and propagation. The statement that only a subset of cells drives tumor formation has major implications for the development of new targeted therapeutic strategies aimed at eradicating the tumor stem cell population. This review will focus on the biology of normal and malignant colonic stem cells, which might contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for tumor development and resistance to therapy.
