Heat flow distribution in Chinese continent and its adjacent areas

Using a compilation of 6980 heat flow measurements, we produce a new heat flow map for the Chinese continent and its adjacent areas. We develop an objective and integrated method to interpolate the heat flow data, taking into account both the uniformity within geological units and coherency of regional heat flow. The geologic units are outlined based on Zhang et al.’s active tectonic block model. Our heat flow model is presented in two formats: a contour map and a heat flow dataset with values on a 1×1° grid for the Chinese continent and its adjacent areas, reflecting detailed variations in some regions. Also provided is a resolution map which helps understand the reliability of the heat flow model. Our results reveal that (1) Heat flows in the eastern part of the Chinese continent are relatively higher than those in the western part except that in the Tibetan Plateau area. (2) Heat flows in the Ordos and North China blocks are around 60 mW/m2, and are 50–55 mW/m2 in South China except for the continental marginal sea regions. (3) Heat flow is the lowest in the Junggar Basin, only 35–45 mW/m2, and is 45–55 mW/m2 in the Tarim Basin. The results of this study provide an important data- set for studies on thermal and rheological structures of the Chinese continent and its adjacent areas.

Whole lesion histogram analysis of apparent diffusion coefficient predicts therapy response in locally advanced rectal cancer

海南密花石斛资源现状调查及居群表型多样性研究

通过查阅文献、实地踏查等方法对海南密花石斛种质资源进行调查,以收集到的10个居群材料为研究对象,利用变异系数、主成分分析、相关分析、聚类分析等方法,对获取的表型性状进行遗传多样性分析。结果显示,12个表型性状的变异系数均值在4.5%~25%之间,在居群间大于居群内变异;而主成分分析结果显示,其变异主要来自花序长、茎粗和唇瓣长;Pearson相关分析则表明小花数同唇瓣长相关性最大,为0.8087;根据Q型聚类分析结果,在欧式距离为20处,将供试材料分为2大类。该研究结果可在密花石斛品种选育和保护利用时提供数据参考。

Effect of Milling Time on the Microstructure and Tensile Properties of Ultrafine Grained Ni–SiC Composites at Room Temperature

Bulk metallic nickel-silicon carbide nano-particle （Ni-SiCNp） composites, with milling time ranged from 8 to 48 h, were prepared in a planetary ball mill and sintered using a spark plasma sintering （SPS） furnace. The microstructure of the Ni-SiCnp composites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy （TEM） and their mechanical properties were investigated by tensile measurements. The TEM results showed well-dispersed SiCNp particles, either within the matrix, between twins or along grain boundaries （GB）, as well as the presence of stacking faults and twin structures, characteristics of materials with low stacking fault energy. Dislocation lines were also observed to interact with the SiCNp which were plastically nondeformable. A synergistic relationship existed between Hall-Perch strength- ening and dispersion strengthening mechanisms, which was shown to greatly influence the mechanical properties of the Ni-SiCNp composites. Both the maximum yield and tensile strengths were found in the Ni-SiCNp composite with a milling time of 48 h, whereas the increased rate of strengths drastically decreased in material milled above 8 h due to the significant SiCNp agglomeration. The ball milling process resulted in the formation of nano-scale, ultra-fine grained （UFG） Ni-SiCNp composites when the milling time was extended for longer periods, greatly strengthening these materials. The sharp decrease in elongation percentages, however, should be comprehensively considered before irrevers- ible inelastic deformation.

Seasonal variability in CDOM absorption and fluorescence properties in the Barataria Basin,Louisiana,Usa

Absorption and fluorescence properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter （CDOM） along a 124 km transect in the Barataria Basin, a large estuary located in Louisiana, Usa, were investigated during high and low flow periods of the Mississippi River in the spring and winter of 2008-2009. Mean CDOM absorption at 355 nm from the marine to the freshwater end member stations ranged from （3.25 ± 0.56） to （20.76 ± 2.43） m^-1 for the three month high flow period whereas it varied from （1.48 ± 1.08） to （25.45 ± 7.03） m^-1 for the same stations during low flow period. Corresponding salinity values at these stations indicated the influence of river and shelf exchanges in the lower basin and precipitation and runoff in the upper basin. An inverse relationship of CDOM absorbance and fluorescence with salinity observed in the basin could he a useful indicator of salinity. CDOM fluorescence also varied over a large range showing an approximately 8 to 12-fold increase between the marine and freshwater end members for the two flow seasons. Excitation-emission matrix spectral plots indicated the presence of various fluorescence components with highest being the A-peak, lowest the T-peak, and the C and M-peaks showing similar trends along the transect. During low flow season the A/C ratio were well correlated with station locations indicating increased terrestrial influence towards the upper basin. CDOM absorption and fluorescence at 355 nm were highly correlated and independent of CDOM sources suggesting that fluorescence could be used to characterize CDOM in the basin.

Heat-induced mortality and expression of heat shock proteins in Colorado potato beetles treated with imidacloprid

The Colorado potato beetle is an important pest of solanaceous plants in the Northern Hemisphere. Better understanding of its physiological responses to temperature stress and their interactions with still-prevalent chemical control has important implications for the management of this insect. We measured mortality and expression of the Hsp70 heat shock proteins in the Colorado potato beetle larvae exposed to sublethal concentration of the commonly used insecticide imidacloprid, and to supraoptimal temperatures. Both turned out to be significant stress factors, although induction of Hsp70 by imidacloprid observed in the present study was low compared to its induction by the heat. The two factors also interacted with each other. At an extreme temperature of 43 ~C, exposure to a sublethal dose of imidacloprid resulted in a significant rise in larval mortality, which was not observed at an optimal temperature of 25 ~C. Heat-stressed larvae also failed to respond to imidacloprid by producing more Hsp70. These findings suggest that when field rates of insecticides become insufficient for killing the exposed beetles under optimal temperature conditions due to the evolution of resistance in beetle populations, they may still reduce the probability of resistant beetles surviving the heat shock created by using propane flamers as a rescue treatment.

High arsenic(As)and chromium(Cr)concentrations are currently receiving attention because of their negative effects on the environment and human *** inhabiting contaminated environments have developed resistance mechanisms against the toxicity of these ***,members of the bacterial genus Micrococcus have been isolated from different toxic metal-contaminated environments;however,knowledge concerning its resistance mechanisms to As and Cr toxicity remains *** luteus strains(An24,Mh,NE2TL6,and NE2TTS4)were isolated from the endosphere and soil of two heavy metal-contaminated sites in Mexico to identify differences in the resistance mechanisms by the *** *** strains were resistant to As(As^(3+)and As^(5+)),chromate,dichromate,cobalt,copper,nickel,and *** analysis indicated that the heavy metal-resistant strains(An24,Mh,NE2TL6,and NE2TTS4)could be assigned to the *** group and had more heavy metal-resistant genes(transporters,chaperones,and enzymes)compared to reference strains of the *** group,*** NCTC 2665^(T)and Micrococcus endophyticus JCM 16951^(T).The resistant bacteria were able to biotransform As^(3+)and As^(5+)through a carbon source-dependent *** biotransformation of As5+was potentially carried out in the cytoplasm through a thioredoxin-dependent pathway,which may be coupled with biosorption.A qualitative analysis of organic acids(OAs)identified a change in the OA profile of the metal-resistant strains that was As-or *** genomic and phenotypic findings suggest that the four *** group strains evaluated in the current study have developed resistance mechanisms that may enable their survival in contaminated sites.
