Reduction of the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas with fibrin sealant

AIM: To assess whether the use of fibrin sealantshortens the closure time of postoperative enterocutaneous fistulas (ECFs). METHODs: The prospective case-control study included 70 patients with postoperative ECFs with an output of stulous tract of > 2 cm and without any local complication. They were divided into study (n = 23) and control groups (n = 47). Esophageal, gastric and colocutaneous fistulas were monitored under endoscopic visualization, which also allowed fibrin glue application directly through the external hole. Outcome variables included closure time, time to resume oral feeding and morbidity related to nutritional support. REsULTs: There were no differences in mean age, fistula output, and follow-up. Closure-time for all patients of the study group was 12.5 ± 14.2 d and 32.5 ± 17.9 d for the control group (P nd morbidity related to nutritional support was 8.6% and 42.5%, respectively (P n patients with colonic fistulas, complete closure occurred 23.5 ± 19.5 d after the first application of fibrin glue, and spontaneous closure was observed after 36.2 ± 22.8 d in the control group (P = 0.36). Recurrences were observed in 2 patients because of residual disease. One patient of each group died during follow-up as a consequence of septic complications related to parenteral nutrition. COnCLUsIOn: Closure time was significantly reduced with the use of fibrin sealant, and oral feeding was resumed faster. We suggest the use of fibrin sealant for the management of stable enterocutaneous fistulas.

Review of the development and uses of hard grade asphalts in France

Hard grade paving asphalts,i.e.,having a penetration at 25C lower than 25 mm/10,have experienced,in France,a significant development over the last forty years,linked to the development of high modulus asphalt concrete for rehabilitation then for new construction of road *** the first part,this paper provides a review of the evolution of asphalts in France over the past sixty years towards the use of harder penetration grades and a limitation of the evolution of the asphalt in the mixing plant to avoid early cracking of the *** recommendations in relation to climatic conditions are *** characteristics of different hard asphalts produced in France are presented including data on the effect of ageing tests rolling thin film oven test(RTFOT)and pressure ageing vessel(PAV).Hardening of hard asphalt after RTFOTþPAV is comparable to that of softer *** performance related to low temperature cracking is less which limits the use of plain hard asphalt in pavements subjected to severe winter conditions and requires polymer *** specifications for hard grade paving asphalts based on traditional empirical tests included in the European standard developed in the mid 2000s and the choices made in France are presented.A comparison of the specifications for hard grade paving asphalts in the European standards and of those proposed for China shows that the European specifications are more stringent as regards consistency and evolution after ageing tests.

Isolation and Characterization of novel Microsatellite Markers in Chayote[sechium edule(Jacq.)sw.]

Chayote [sechium edule (Jacq.) sw.] is an economically important species in Latin America;however, there are very few reports available regarding its genetic diversity. Out of 11 microsatellite markers isolated, 10 loci provided 1 to 7 alleles per locus in a set of Mexican chayote accessions. Observed and expected heterozygosities for each locus ranged from 0.00 to 0.85 and 0.00 to 0.73, respectively. The overall genetic diversity detected by microsatellites was compared with that detected by P450-based analogue markers, a genome-wide dominant marker. Genetic diversity values obtained by the newly designed microsatellite markers were almost equal to the value estimated by PBA markers, but genetic distances calculated by both marker systems were not significantly correlated. Additional microsatellite markers, which could detect more polymorphisms, may be necessary to analyze the genetic diversity and structure of Mexican chayote collections.

Degradation of Indigo Carmine Using Advanced Oxidation Processes: synergy Effects and Toxicological study

The physicochemical degradation of Indigo Carmine (IC) dye in aqueous solution was performed using single and combined Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP’s). Photocatalysis (TiOsub>2sub>-UV), Ozonation (Osub>3sub>) and sonolysis (sn) were tested either in a standalone methodology or by combination of two simultaneous AOP’s. The dye conversion was followed by both measurements: 1) color removal determined by UV-VIs spectrometry and 2) organic and inorganic load determined by the chemical oxygen demand (COD). A complete and quick color disappearance of model water waste has been obtained by using combination of non-irradiated AOP’s, namely, O3sub>/sn, which contrasts to the combination of irradiated photocatalysis with O3sub> or sonolysis. Color removal with simultaneous TiO2sub>-UV/sn reached 77% while TiO2sub>-UV/O3sub> reached 96% at similar reaction time. On the other hand, the standalone O3sub> yielded the highest color removal (94.4%) in 32 minutes whereas sn reached only 39.2% in 4 hours. The standalone light irradiated TiO2sub>-UV reached 93.3% color re-moval in one hour of reaction time. These results indicated that non-irradiated (sn and O3sub>) enhance synergistic effects that provoke structural changes in dye molecule without reaching total degradation. This is evidenced from FTIR of residuals from reaction mixture in which it has been observed the presence of organic molecules such as aromatics, sulfonic and amines refractory compounds that are mechanisti-cally possible to be found during IC degradation. Also, toxicity tests (MicroToxsup>?sup> Technique) were performed using commercially available bacteria culture before and after IC degradation for each AOP and their combination. Reduction of aqueous dye concentration decreased the level of toxicity of the treated water which is the main target of the AOP’s but the presence of the remaining recalcitrant compounds have also toxic effect.

The <I>G</I>-functions series Method Adapted to the numerical Integration of Parabolic PDE

The Method Of Lines (MOL) and scheifele’s G-functions in the design of algorithms adapted for the numeric integration of parabolic Partial Differential Equations (PDE) in one space dimension are applied. The semi-discrete system of ordinary differential equations in the time direction, obtained by applying the MOL to PDE, is solved with the use of a method of Adapted series, based on scheifele’s G-functions. This method integrates exactly unperturbed linear systems of ordinary differential equations, with only one G-function. An implementation of this algorithm is used to approximate the solution of two test problems proposed by various authors. The results obtained by the Dufort-Frankel, Crank-nicholson and the methods of Adapted series versus the analytical solution, show the results of mistakes made.

Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane (DDT) and Endosulfan in sediments of sabancuy Lagoon, Campeche, Mexico

DDT and Endosulfan are persistent organic compounds which have been prohibited and their use has been limited in agricultural activities due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation potential. The use of DDT in fumigation campaigns against endemic diseases transmitted by vectors of malaria and dengue was prohibited in Carmen Island, Campeche, Mexico since 1995. In the surroundings of sabancuy Lagoon, many and diverse agricultural activities are carried out and it is a common practice to use organ-chlorine pesticides as endosulfan. In order to know the levels of these compounds in this area, a sediment sampling campaign was carried out in ten sampling points randomly located within the sabancuy Lagoon, Campeche and considering one reference sampling point located 2 km away from sabancuy Lagoon within the Mexican Gulf. Three metabolites were identified in sediments samples belonging to DDT’s family: (4,4’-DDD;4,4’-DDE;4,4’- DDT) and Endosulfan’s family (Endosulfan I, Endosulfan II y Endosulfan sulfate). Higher concentrations in DDT’s family were found for 4,4’-DDD, followed by 4,4’-DDE and 4,4’-DDT. Endosulfan’s family, showed the following order for concentrations: Endosulfan II > Endosulfan I > Endosulfan sulfate. Mean concentration for s-DDT and s-Endosulfan in sabancuy Lagoon sediments was twice higher than those found in other studies carried out in Términos Lagoon, Campeche, Mexico in 2002.

Foodborne Illnesses (FI) are considered an important problem in public health for their high levels of morbidity and, in some cases, of mortality in Mexico and around the world. Different agents that cause Foodborne Illnesses, in which biological agents such as the genus salmonella spp., are included, have been often associated with outbreaks. A continued effort has been observed in the food industry, in collaboration with sanitary authorities on a global scale, through the creation and continued improvement of different procedures to prevent the contamination by salmonella, in which the elaboration of laboratory methodologies for the detection and isolation of this pathogen in foods and, in such manner, prevents the outbreak of illnesses. However, along with the aforementioned, it has been reported that a few years ago, the appearance of an ever-increasing number of strains of salmonella spp., in foods with multi-drug resistance to antibiotics which are used in the treatment of its illness, results in a major emphasis on the health issue related to Foodborne Illnesses and, in particular, to those generated by factors of medical dependence such as the increase in recuperation time, costs, and reduction in the number of alternative pharmaceutical treatments. This work presents a general overview of FI, in which illnesses generated by bacteria of the genus salmonella spp., their detection in a microbiological laboratory, as well as the phenomenon of resistance to antibiotics by these bacteria, and the current and difficult issue reported through different investigations all around the world, of the rise in this phenomenon and its importance in public health, are discussed.

neuraxial anaesthesia is widely used in surgical procedures;overall, epidural and intrathecal techniques. nevertheless, several outcomes should be considered. The incidence of neurologic complications after neuraxial anaesthesia is not perfectly clear (0% - 0.08%), although there are several described cases of spinal cord ischemia. We present a case of thoracic unilateral spinal cord syndrome following lumbar spinal anaesthesia for periprosthetic knee fracture. Our patient suffered monoparesis in her left lower limb as well as decreasing of muscle strength and loss of tendon reflexes. The MnR showed left hyperintense intra-cord images from T7 to T12 attributed to spinal cord oedema and a lineal hypointensity related to minimal haematic component. What made this case surprising was the fact that spinal anaesthesia was performed between L3 and L4 and the patient did not suffer paraesthesia associated with local anaesthetic injection. she was treated with glucocorticoids, gabapentin and amitriptyline. she also was checked by physical rehabilitators, neurologists and Pain Unit physicians. We have found another case reported in the literature about thoracic cord injury after lumbar spinal puncture. In this paper, we report possible aetiologies according to a review and neurological evolution of the patient seven months later.

Biogeochemistry of Plane Trees as a Tool to Detect Atmospheric Pollution

The plane tree, which is a valuable tool to detect atmospheric pollution, is one of the most common trees in European cities. soil and leaf samplings were carried out in Barcelona and its environs (nE spain) to establish the soil-plant relationship. Dry and ashed leaves and soils were analyzed by Instrumental neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission spectroscopy (ICP/OEs) at the ACTLABs laboratories in Ontario, Canada. Given that diesel is the main fuel used in vehicles in Europe, we sought to establish the role of diesel in atmospheric pollution. Diesel samples were obtained from service stations and analyzed after preconcentration using ICP/Ms at the geochemistry laboratories of the University of Barcelona. The average content of diesel oil shows high values of Pb, Cu, Cr, Ag, Cd and Mn. High values of Pb, Cu, Au, Hg and sb in leaves and soils were detected downtown and along main roads outside the city, whereas low levels of these elements were observed in rural areas.
