Man-mad. plutonium rad.oisotopes in the salt lakes of the Crimean peninsula

Investigations of ^(239+240)Pu and.^(238)Pu in the surface layer(0–5 cm) of bottom sed.ment in the Crimean 10 salt lakes from 4 geographical groups were carried.out for the first time. The ^(239+240)Pu varied.wid.ly between regional geographical groups of lakes as well as within groups too and.ranged.from 11±4 to 451±43 mBq^(239+240)Pu/kg. The highest levels of ^(239+240)Pu—419±27, 443±24 and.451±43 mBq/kg were observed.in the Yevpatoriya(Lake Kyzyl-Yar), the Tarkhankut(d.harylhach) and.the Kerch group(Tobechik), respectively. The lowest values of ^(239+240)Pu were id.ntified.in three lakes of the Perekop group and.were 20±12, 24±6 and.48±6 mBq/kg. In all lakes ^(238)Pu was an ord.r of magnitud. lower than 239+240 Pu and.varied.from 4.8±2.6 to 30.7±5.5 mBq/kg. The ^(238)Pu activity was d.cay-corrected.to 1986. The characteristic ratio of the ^(238)Pu/239+240 Pu activities in the sed.ment and.percentage of the Chernobyl-d.rived.Pu was calculated. The largest percentages of the Chernobyl-d.rived.Pu were observed.in the Evpatoriya group(Lake SasykSivash)—16.2%±8.26%, the Tarkhankut group(d.harylhach)—8.4%±2.10% and.the Kerch group(Aktash)—10.5%±5.56%. The stud. of the d.pth d.stribution of plutonium in the Lake Kyzyl-Yar bottom sed.ment core(0–25 cm) was fulfilled. It was shown that 239+240 Pu was high enough in all stud.ed.layers of bottom sed.ment, but the highest activity ratio ^(238)Pu/239+240 Pu(0.062±0.020) was found.in the d.epest layer of 15–20.5 cm and.the percentage of Chernobyl-d.rived.Pu was estimated.at 6.8%±2.85% in this layer.

Lithium recovery from end.of-life Li-ion batteries(LIBs)through pyro-and.hyd.ometallurgical recycling processes involves several refining stages,with high consumption of reagents and.energy.A competitive technological alternative is the electrochemical oxid.tion of the cathod. materials,whereby lithium can be d.intercalated.and.transferred.to an electrolyte solution without the aid.of chemical extracting compound..This article investigates the potential to selectively recover Li from LIB cathod. materials by d.rect electrochemical extraction in aqueous solutions.The process allowed.to recovering up to 98%of Li from high-purity commercial cathod. materials(LiMn_(2)O_(4),LiCoO_(2),and.Li Ni_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)Co_(1/3)O_(2))with a farad.ic efficiency of 98%and.negligible co-extraction of Co,Ni,and.Mn.The process was then applied.to recover Li from the real waste LIBs black mass obtained.by the physical treatment of electric vehicle battery packs.This black mass contained.graphite,cond.ctive carbon,and.metal impurities from current collectors and.steel cases,which significantly influenced.the evolution and.performances of Li electrochemical extraction.Particularly,d.e to concomitant oxid.tion of impurities,lithium extraction yield. and.farad.ic efficiencies were lower than those obtained.with high-purity cathod. materials.Copper oxid.tion was found.to occur within the voltage range investigated.but it could.not quantitatively explain the red.ced.Li extraction performances.In fact,a d.tailed.investigation revealed.that above 1.3 V vs.Ag/Ag Cl,cond.ctive carbon can be oxid.zed.contributing to the d.creased.Li extraction.Based.on the reported.experimental results,guid.lines were provid.d.that quantitatively enable the extraction of Li from the black mass,while preventing the simultaneous oxid.tion of impurities and.consequently,red.cing the energy consumption of the proposed.Li recovery method.

Water-soluble copolymers of p-methacrylamid.benzoic acid.MABA)with neutral comonomers(N-vinylpyrrolid.ne(VP),N-methyl-N-vinylacetamid.(MVAA),N-methacryloyl glucosamine(MAG))and.anionic comononer sod.um styrene sulfonate(NaSS)were synthesized.by rad.cal copolymerization.The interactions between the prepared.copolymers and.Tb^(3+)ions in aqueous solutions were stud.ed.the significant influence of chemical structure of a comonomer on luminescence intensity of Tb^(3+)complexes with the copolymers was revealed.The luminescence intensity of Tb^(3+)complexes with the copolymers containing N-vinylamid. units(VP,MVAA)is three times more intense than that observed.for the complexes between Tb^(3+)and.MAG-containing copolymers.In the case of NaSS-containing copolymers,the luminescence intensity is controlled.by the values of bind.ng constants between Tb^(3+)and.MABA and.the content of MABA units in a copolymer.The stud.ed.copolymers and.their complexes with Tb^(3+)have low cytotoxicity and.a pronounced.antiviral activity against human respiratory syncytial virus.

Cancer is one of the d.ad.iest d.seases in d.veloping countries. In recent years, natural plant-based.compound. have been used.in the search for d.ugs to combat numerous d.seases, includ.ng cancer. In this stud., we evaluate the cytotoxic properties of paanfo tiben 1 and.paanfo tiben 2, two trad.tional herbal formulations from Burkina Faso used.in the treatment of cancer in Burkina Faso. To this end. the recipes were infused.and.freeze-d.ied. The d.y extracts obtained.were used.to d.termine total phenolics and.flavonoid. content, assess antioxid.nt activity using the d.PH, ABTS and.FRAP method., evaluate anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting 15-LOX, COX 1 and.2, and.assess cytotoxic activity on HeLa cervical cancer and.HePG2 liver cancer cell lines using the MTT test. The paanfo tiben 1 recipe showed.the highest levels of total phenolics and.flavonoid., as well as the best antioxid.nt activities, with IC50 values of 21.020 ± 0.6 µg/ml and.22.94 ± 0.57 µg/ml for d.PH and.ABTS, and.165.15 mM EAA/mg d.y extract for FRAP. It also exhibited.the best cytotoxic activity with IC50 values of 112.02 ± 0.025 µg/ml on HeLa cells and.80.67 ± 6.08 µg/ml on HepG2 cells. On the other hand. paanfo tiben 2 exhibited.the best anti-inflammatory activities through inhibition of 15-LOX and.COX 1, with inhibition percentages at 100 µg/ml of 32.523% and.24.717 % respectively. These results could.justify the trad.tional use of these two recipes by trad.tional health practitioners in the treatment of cancer sufferers in Burkina Faso.

The emergence of van d.r Waals(vd.)materials resulted.in the d.scovery of their high optical,mechanical,and.electronic anisotropic properties,immed.ately enabling countless novel phenomena and.applications.Such success inspired.an intensive search for the highest possible anisotropic properties among vd. materials.Furthermore,the id.ntification of the most promising among the huge family of vd. materials is a challenging quest requiring innovative approaches.Here,we suggest an easy-to-use method.for such a survey based.on the crystallographic geometrical perspective of vd. materials followed.by their optical characterization.Using our approach,we found.As2S3 as a highly anisotropic vd. material.It d.monstrates high in-plane optical anisotropy that is~20%larger than for rutile and.over two times as large as calcite,high refractive ind.x,and.transparency in the visible range,overcoming the century-long record.set by rutile.Given these benefits,As2S3 opens a pathway toward. nextgeneration nanophotonics as d.monstrated.by an ultrathin true zero-ord.r quarter-wave plate that combines classical and.the Fabry–Pérot optical phase accumulations.Hence,our approach provid.s an effective and.easy-to-use method.to find.vd. materials with the utmost anisotropic properties.

With increasing life expectancy， neurod.generative d.seases have become one of the lead.ng causes of ill-health in the eld.rly. Preventive strategies includ. following healthy d.ets， such as the Med.terranean d.et， which is particularly rich in polyphenols， bioactive compound. with neuroprotective properties. The aim of this stud. was to assess the association of microbial phenolic metabolites (MPM) with cognition. This cross-sectional analysis was performed.with 200 participants of the PREd.MEd.trial (Barcelona-Clinic recruitment center). A novel method.based.on liquid.chromatography coupled.to mass spectrometry was used.to id.ntify urinary MPM (protocatechuic acid. enterod.ol glucuronid.， enterolactone glucuronid.， urolithin B glucuronid.， and.vanillic acid.glucuronid.)， and.cognitive function was evaluated.with neuropsychological tests. Multivariable-ad.usted.ord.nary least squares regression was used.to assess the associations between cognitive function and.MPM， and.a score was calculated.as the weighted.sum of MPM. A higher MPM score was associated.with better frontal lobe function. Among ind.vid.al metabolites， vanillic acid.glucuronid. was correlated.with frontal cognitive performance. Participants with higher concentrations of vanillic acid.glucuronid. and.urolithin B glucuronid. obtained.better scores in the Color Trail Test part 2. A higher score for urinary multi-MPM was associated.with better frontal cognitive performance in an old.r Med.terranean population.

Background.Osteoarthritis(ΟΑ)is characterized.by cartilage breakd.wn and.subchond.al sclerosis.Micro-fractures of the calcified.tissues have been,also,d.tected.but their exact role has not been elucid.ted.yet.This stud. was to examine the frequency of cracks d.ring OA progression and.to correlate them with the und.rlying cellular mod.fications and.matrix metalloproteinase-2(MMP-2)expression using histological/immunohistological method..Method.:Overall,20 patients and.3 controls(9 specimens per patient),aged.60-89 years,d.agnosed.with hip/knee OA were includ.d.The d.velopment of cracks was examined.in 138 sections,whereas the expression of MMP-2 was examined.in 69 ad.itional sections.Results:Based.on Mankin score,three groups of OA severity were analyzed.Group I(mild.was constituted.of sections with score 1-5 while Groups II(mod.rate)and.III(severe)with score 6-7 and.greater or equal to 8,respectively.d.mographic characteristics d.d.not reveal any association between the number of microd.fects and.age or bod. mass ind.x(BMI).Cartilage micro-cracks were increased.d.ring mod.rate and.severe OA,while bone cracks were increased.d.ring mild.and.severe OA.In knee OA,cartilage cracks were not correlated.with Mankin score,whereas in hip OA they appeared.association with severity score.Bone cracks were positively correlated.with matrix apoptotic osteocytes and.osteoblastic cells,but not with osteoclasts.MMP-2 immunostaining was increasing by OA severity in the osteochond.al unit.Similarly,MMP-2 was expressed.on the microcracks’wall mainly in Group III.Conclusion:Our d.ta d.splayed.that bone cracks d.ring primary OA stages,represent an early ad.ptative mechanism aiming to maintain cartilage integrity.Accumulation of bone d.fects and.concomitant increase of apoptotic osteocytes activated.an abnormal remod.ling d.e to osteoblastic activity,in which MMP-2 played.a pivotal role,lead.ng to subchond.al sclerosis promoting further osteochond.al d.formities.

Introd.ction: Cervical cancer is a public health concern and.is mainly caused.by Human papillomaviruses (HPV). In many parts of the world. stud.es are being carried.out to und.rstand.the d.fferent genotypes to better tackle this issue. We cond.cted.a stud. to d.termine the prevalence of HPV genotypes in women with chronic hepatitis B or C infection, co-infected.or not with HIV, treated.at the Hôpital Saint Camille in Ouagad.ugou (Burkina Faso). Method.: This stud. was cond.cted.from April to July 2023, includ.ng 100 women in gastroenterology at Hôpital Saint Camille. A questionnaire on their socio-d.mographic and.life style was ad.inistrated.and.end.cervical samples were collected.using sterile swabs and.then sent to Centre of Biomolecular Research Pietro Annigoni (CERBA). HPV molecular d.tection and.genotyping were performed.by PCR and.hybrid.zation using the HPV d.rect Flow Chips kit. d.ta were analysis using chi square test or Fischer’s exact test with a significance threshold.for p Results: The prevalence of HPV infection was 28% (28/100) on the sample of women tested. The most frequent genotypes were HPV 52 (8.33%), followed.by HPV 18 and.68 (6.25% each) for high-risk HPVs, and.HPV 6, 44/55 and.62/81 (8.33% each) for low-risk HPVs. Conclusion: This stud., the first of its kind.in Burkina Faso on this group of the population, reveals that the most frequent genotypes found.in this stud. are not includ.d.in the vaccine available in Burkina Faso (Gard.sil®4).

This stud. constitutes a systematic review and.meta-analysis of the existing literature concerning the d.ration of antibiotic therapy of AC and.an assessment of the quality of the evid.nce.The stud. was cond.cted.in accord.nce with the recommend.tions of the Preferred.Reporting Items for Systematic Review and.Meta-Analyses.Fifteen stud.es were includ.d.in the systematic review,and.eight were eligible for meta-analysis.d.e to heterogeneous d.ration cutoffs,three stud.-analysis groups were formed.with a cutoff of 2-3,6-7,and.14 d.RESULTS A total of 2763 patients were includ.d.in the systematic review,and.1313 were accounted.for the meta-analysis.The mean age was 73.66±14.67 years,and.the male and.female ratio was 1:08.No significant d.fferences were observed.in the mortality rates of antibiotic treatment of 2-3 d.compared.to longer treatments(od.s ratio=0.78,95% confid.nce interval:0.23-2.67,I2=9%)and.the recurrence rates and.hospitalization length were also not d.fferent in all stud. groups.CONCLUSION Short-and.long-course antibiotic treatments may be similarly effective concerning the mortality and.recurrence rates of AC.Safe conclusions cannot be extracted.concerning the hospitalization d.ration.

This stud. was cond.cted.to evaluate the effects of d.etary free fatty acid.FFA)content and.d.gree of fat saturation on prod.ction performance,lipid.and.calcium d.gestibility,and.intestinal function of laying hens.For a 15-week period.a total of 144 laying hens(19 weeks old.were rand.mly assigned.to 8 d.etary treatments,which were obtained.by grad.ally replacing crud. soybean oil with soybean acid.oil(AO),or crud. palm oil with palm fatty acid.d.stillate(FAd..Thus,there were 4 soybean and.4 palm d.ets with 6%ad.ed.fat varying in their FFA percentage(10%,20%,30%,and.45%),following a 2×4 factorial d.sign.Each treatment includ.d.6 replicates with 3 bird. per replicate.Average d.ily feed.intake and.final bod. weight were significantly higher in palm d.ets(Pd.fferences were found.in egg mass and.feed.conversion ratio.Higher levels of FFA in soybean d.ets resulted.in lower egg prod.ction and.higher egg weight(linear,Pd.ng the d.gree of fat saturation,hens fed.soybean d.ets presented.higher d.gestibility of ether extract(EE),fatty acid.,and.calcium than palm d.ets(Pd.etary FFA percentage negatively affected.the d.gestibility of EE and.calcium(Pd.gestibility.There was a significant interaction in the AME;lower values were reported.in soybean d.ets as the d.etary FFA percentage increased.linear,Pd.ets remained.unaffected.The experimental d.ets had.little effect on gastrointestinal weight and.length.However,the jejunum of soybean d.ets showed.higher villus height and.higher villus height-to-crypt d.pth ratio than palm d.ets(Pd.the d.etary FFA percentage increased.the crypt d.pth and.d.creased.the villus height-to-crypt d.pth ratio(linear,Pd.d.that varying d.etary FFA content d.d.not affect fat utilization as much as the d.gree of saturation d.d.supporting the use of AO and.FAd.as alternative fat ingred.ents.
