Epidemiology of hepatitis B virus infection among young adults in Taiwan,China after public vaccination program

Background The public vaccination program of hepatitis B virus （HBV） was launched during 1984 in Taiwan, China. However, the long-lasting protective efficacy of HBV vaccination among adolescents older than 15 years of age was seldom recorded. Methods A seroepidemiological survey was conducted among 4575 first-year university students in Taiwan, China during 2000 to 2003, including the serological data of HBV by testing HBV surface antigen （HBsAg）, surface antibody （anti-HBs）, HBV core antibody （anti-HBc） and demographic information. Results HBsAg carrier rate among male university students born before the initiation of the HBV vaccination program decreased from 12.8% to 4.8% among those born after the vaccination program （P〈0.001, Х^2 test for linear trend）. Similarly, HBsAg carrier rate among female university students born before the initiation of the HBV vaccination program decreased from 8.1% to 2.7% among those born after the vaccination program （P〈0.001, Х^2 test for linear trend）. Both male and female students in eastern Taiwan had the highest HBsAg carrier rate compared with the other places. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, compared with students born after July 1984, the adjusted OR of HBsAg carrier rate decreased from 3.10 for students born before June 1981 to 1.56 for students born from July 1983 to June 1984 （95% CI 1.96-4.91, P〈0.001; 95% CI1.06-2.28, P=0.024; respectively）. Conclusions Public vaccination provides long-lasting protection again HBV infection among the university students in Taiwan, China older than 18 years of age. There is a geographic variation of HBV infection among young adults in Taiwan China.

Lipoic acid suppresses portal endotoxemia-induced steatohepatitis and pancreatic inflammation in rats

AIM: To examine the effect of α-lipoic acid (LA) on mild portal endotoxemia-induced steatohepatitis and associated pancreatic abnormalities in fructose-fed rats. METHODS: Rats were randomly assigned into two groups with a regular or 60% fructose-enriched diet for 8 wk. After fructose feeding for 4 wk, rats were further divided into four subgroups: with intraportal saline (F PV ), with intraportal saline plus administration of LA (F PV + LA ), with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) infusion (F PLPS ), and with LPS infusion plus administration of LA (F PLPS + LA ). Rats were treated with LPS using intraportal infusion while LA was administered orally. Metabolite levels, superoxide levels, inflammatory markers, malondialdehyde content, glutathione content and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4 ) gene expression were all measured using standard biochemical techniques. Pancreatic insulin secretion was evaluated by a hyperglycemic clamp technique. Histology of liver and pancreas tissues were evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Fructose-induced elevation in plasma C-reactive protein, amylase, superoxide, white blood cell count as well as in hepatic and pancreatic contents of malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6 were increased in animals treated with LPS and reversed with LA administration. The augmented hepatic gene expression of TLR4 in fructose-fed rats was further increased in those with intraportal LPS infusion, which was partially reversed by LA administration. Pathological examination showed inflammatory changes and leukocyte infiltration in hepatic and pancreatic islets of animals treated with LPS but were rarely observed in those with LA treatment. In addition to affects on the liver, impaired pancreatic insulin secretion seen in fructose-fed rats was deteriorated in with LPS treatment and partially reversed with LA administration. A comparative study of pancreas transplantation between type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus

Background:Pancreas transplantation remains the best long-term treatment option to achieve physiological euglycemia and insulin independence in patients with labile diabetes mellitus(DM).It is widely accepted as an optimal procedure for type 1 DM(T1DM),but its application in type 2 DM(T2DM)is not unanimously ***:In total,146 diabetes patients undergoing pancreas transplantation were included in this *** data and outcomes were compared between the T1DM and T2DM ***:Majority(93%)of the pancreas transplantations in T2DM were for uremic *** occurred in 106(73%)patients,including 70(48%)with early complications before discharge and 79(54%)with late complications during follow-up ***,rejection of pancreas graft occurred in 37(25%)*** rejection rate in T2DM recipients was significantly lower than that in *** short-and long-term outcomes for endocrine function in terms of fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c levels and graft survival rates are comparable between the T2DM and T1DM ***:T2DM is not inferior to T1DM after pancreas transplantation in terms of surgical risks,immunological and endocrine outcomes,and graft survival ***,pancreas transplantation could be an effective option to treat selected uremic T2DM patients without significant insulin resistance.

Face is the most common biometric used by humans, its applications range from static, mug-shot verification to a dynamic, uncontrolled face identification in a cluttered background. The main objective of this paper is to construct an effective human face identification system. The presented algorithm combines the scaling process, histogram equalization process, binary two dimensional principal component analysis (B2DPCA) process, and support vector machine (SVM) scheme to construct a human face identification algorithm. The experimental results show that the presented algorithm has good efficiency for human face identification.

Although investors have a variety of investing methods, it is still difficult to predict stock values and investment risks in order to get the best investments with higher returns and lower *** proposed method is to use the Taiex 50 stock index as *** hierarchical clustering method is used to analyze the clustering patterns of the Taiex 50 where stocks from the higher cluster plane make the stock *** experimental data are based on historical data for years 2005 and 2006 Price-Earning Ratio（PER）taken from the Taiwan’s Price-book *** portfolio from the clustering analysis shows higher return rates than the Taiex 50 *** clustering analysis portfolio can be used by investors as a reference to select stocks that are of low investment risks and higher returns.

Molecular mechanism of inflammatory pain

Chronic inflammatory pain resulting from arthritis, nerve injury and tumor growth is a serious public health issue. One of the major challenges in chronic inflammatory pain research is to develop new pharmacologic treatments with long-term efficacy and few side effects. The mediators released from inflamed sites induce complex changes in peripheral and central processing by directly acting on transducer receptors located on primary sensory neurons to transmit pain signals or indirectly modulating pain signals by activating receptors coupled with G-proteins and second messengers. High local proton concentration(acidosis) is thought to be a decisive factor in inflammatory pain and other mediators such as prostaglandin, bradykinin, and serotonin enhance proton-induced pain. Proton-sensing ion channels [transient receptor potential V1(TRPV1) and the acid-sensing ion channel(ASIC) family] are major receptors for direct excitation of nociceptive sensory neurons in response to acidosis or inflammation.G-protein-coupled receptors activated by prostaglandin, bradykinin, serotonin, and proton modulate functions of TRPV1, ASICs or other ion channels, thus leading to inflammation- or acidosis-linked hyperalgesia. Although detailed mechanisms remain unsolved, clearly different types of pain or hyperalgesia could be due to complex interactions between a distinct subset of inflammatory mediator receptors expressed in a subset of nociceptors. This review describes new directions for the development of novel therapeutic treatments in pain.
