Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the use of propinox hydrochloride and scopolamine hydrochloride in patients presenting abdominal colic (abdominal pain), in terms of treatment efficacy and tolerability. Material & Methods: This was an analytical, retrospective, comparative study based on hospital records of outpatients treated at Serviço de Clínica Médica do Hospital das Clínicas Costantino Otaviano (HCTCO) and at Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Rio de Janeiro, from 1988-1998. Subjects were divided into two groups: patients from Group 1 were treated with propinox hydrochloride, while patients from Group 2 were treated with scopolamine hydrochloride. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism version 5.0. For comparison of categorical variables, we used the chi-squared or Fisher’s test, while continuous variables were analyzed using ANOVA or the Student’s T test. Results: A total of 1042 subjects were included, of which 525 were allocated to Group 1 and 517 to Group 2. Mean treatment duration was 9.166 days (±4.208) in Group 1 and 8.795 days (±5.052) in Group 2, with no statistically significant difference in treatment duration between the two groups (p = 0.198). All subjects in Group 1 were treated with propinox 10 mg (2 coated tablets, three times per day) while all subjects in Group 2 were treated with scopolamine hydrochloride 10 mg (2 coated tablets, three times per day). There were no statistically significant between-group differences in weight, BMI, heart rate, and respiratory rate at pre- and post-treatment;with the exception of higher post-treatment systolic blood pressure in Group 1, blood pressure measures also remained homogenous. Adverse events were reported among both treatment groups with no significant between-group difference in incidence (p = 0566). Expression of the Genes OsNRT1.1, OsNRT2.1, OsNRT2.2, and Kinetics of Nitrate Uptake in Genetically Contrasting Rice Varieties

Four genetically contrasting rice varieties (IAC-47, Bico Ganga, Arroz de Revenda and Manteiga) according to Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis were assessed regarding expression of the genes OsNRT1.1, OsNRT2.1 and OsNRT2.2 and the nitrate uptake kinetics parameters (Km and Vmax). Up to 250-fold increases in the induction of gene expression after nitrate resupply were observed for the high-affinity transporter (OsNRT2.1 and OsNRT2.2). However, no significant variations in Vmax among the varieties were obtained. The lower value of Km of the IAC-47 cultivar in relation to the Arroz de Revenda variety suggests a greater role of high-affinity transporter genes. These results indicate that closer attention should be paid to the expression levels of these genes in selecting varieties aiming to enhance nitrogen uptake efficiency.

AIM To compare gallstones removal rate and incidence of bleeding, pancreatitis, use of mechanical lithotripsy, cholangitis and perforation between isolated sphincterotomy vs sphincterotomy associated with balloon dilation of papilla in choledocholithiasis through the meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. METHODS We conducted a systematic review according to the PRISMA guidelines. Literature search was restricted to randomized controlled trials(RCTs) on Med Line, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and EMBASE database platforms in July 2017. The manual search included references of retrieved articles. We extracted data focusing on outcomes: The primary endpoint was the stones removal rate; Secondary endpoints were rates of pancreatitis, bleeding, use of mechanical lithotripsy(ML), perforation and cholangitis. RESULTS Eleven RCTs with 1824 patients were included. EST was associated with more post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) bleeding [FE RD-0.02, CI(-0.03,-0.00), I2 = 33%, P = 0.05] and more need of mechanical lithotripsy in general [RE RD-0.16, CI(-0.25,-0.06), I2 = 90%, P = 0.002] and in subgroup analysis of stones greater than 15 mm [RE RD-0.20, CI(-0.38,-0.02), I2 = 82%, P = 0.003]. Incidence of pancreatitis [FE RD-0.01, CI(-0.03, 0.01), I2 = 0, P = 0.36], cholangitis [FE RD-0.00, CI(-0.01, 0.01), I2 =0, P = 0.97] and perforation [FE RD-0.01, CI(-0.01, 0.00), I2 = 0, P = 0.23] was similar between the groups as well as similar stone removal rates in general [FE RD-0.01, CI(-0.01, 0.04), I2 = 0, P = 0.23] and pooled analysis of stones greater than 15 mm [FE RD-0.02, CI(-0.02, 0.07), I2 = 11%, P = 0.31]. CONCLUSION Through meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials we found that isolated sphincterotomy was associated with more post-ERCP bleeding and more need for mechanical lithotripsy. However, there was no statistical difference in the stone removal rate between isolated sphincterotomy and sphincterotomy associated with balloon dilation in the

Ozone action on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus fermentum : A pilot study

AIM: To study the effectiveness of ozone in the elimination of cariogenic bacteria, followed with fluoride ***: Sixty extracted teeth free of caries were used, and five groups were constituted. In Group Ⅰ,the teeth were immersed in artificial saliva. In Group Ⅱ,the teeth were inoculated with Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) and immersed in artificial saliva. In GroupⅢ the teeth were inoculated with Lactobaccilus fermentum(L. fermentum) and immersed in artificial *** Group Ⅳ the teeth were inoculated with S. mutans and L. fermentum and immersed in artificial saliva and the teeth in Group Ⅴ were inoculated with S. mutans and L. fermentum, and were subjected to the application of ozone and to the action of a fluoride mineralizing gel. DIAGNOdent was used to evaluate the caries of the teeth 3 wk after inoculation of bacteria and after that the teeth of Group Ⅴ were subjected to the application of ozone during 60 s, by HealO zone. After the application of ozone, products of the remineralization kit supplied by the manufacturer were applied daily, during 30 d. At the end samples were collected for analysis and evaluation of bacterial activity by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Regarding the value of caries, obtained via DIAGNOdent, in the initial measurement the groups are homogeneous(P = 0.730). There was an increase in DIAGNOdent values, presenting statistical significant difference regarding the initial measurement in all groups(P < 0.001), except in group Ⅰ- only artificial saliva- which shows that the artificial carie model was effective. Comparing the initial and final measurements for each of the 60 teeth, it can be observed that in 9 teeth(15.0%) there was a decrease in values between the two measurements, one(1.7%) retained the same values in the two measurements and in the remaining 50 cases(83.3%) there was increase in values between the initial and final measurements. Alzheimer’s Disease among American Minority Populations: An Ecological Exploratory Study

A significant public health concern with regards to increasing rates of Alzheimer’s is that it disproportionately affects minority groups in the United *** present ecological exploratory study uses secondary aggregate data from the fifty United States in the year of *** purpose of this study was to address the disparities in Alzheimer’s in minority populations in the US and explore associated ***“minority”populations considered were African American and Hispanic populations,and the“majority”population was referred to as“white”.The data were extracted from the United States Census Bureau,the CDC National Center for Health Statistics,and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System(BRFSS)*** prevalence rates of Alzheimer’s disease are greatest in both older Hispanic(12.2%)and African Americans(13.8%),compared to older whites(10.3%)in the investigated time *** results showed that being over 65 years old(p=.009),with a below-average($62,843)median household income(p=.024),history of stroke(p=.029),and being a part of the Hispanic population(p=.036),were significantly associated with Alzheimer’s mortality rates in the United *** identifying disparities in access to Alzheimer’s healthcare and at-risk communities,more comprehensive intervention strategies can be developed to promote change and advocate for more Alzheimer’s education and resource allocation for minority populations.

Knowledge about Diabetes Mellitus and Self-Care Activities before and after an Educational Program: A Pilot Study

Background: Health education has proven to be an effective strategy to enable people with diabetes mellitus to manage this condition. However, few studies in Brazilian population samples have been conducted to evaluate the effects of educational programs on diabetes knowledge and self-care. Aim: To evaluate the knowledge about diabetes mellitus and the performance of self-care activities, before and after participation in an educational program. Methods: This is an intervention study, with a quantitative approach, in a single comparison group, for the analysis of “before and after” results related to an educational program focused on self-care and concurrent physical training. The study interventions consisted of 42 exercise sessions, as well as individual educational meetings, according to the needs of each participant and through nursing consultations, using educational material prepared from the literature. The sample was initially composed of 33 adults with diabetes mellitus, but 18 completed the study. For the assessment of knowledge and self-care activities, the revised Brazilian versions of the Diabetes Knowledge Scale and the Diabetes Self-Care Activity Questionnaire were used, respectively, in the two moments of the study, that is, prior to the first educational meeting and immediately before the first physical training session, and after the last educational meeting, which ran parallel to the 42nd physical training session, making a six-month interval between the two assessment moments for each participant. Results: The analysis of knowledge about diabetes showed significant improvement after the educational program and, as for self-care, there was clinical improvement in all dimensions, but only the dimension “general diet” obtained statistically significant improvement. 自2007年以来,外商在北美地区拥有的纸浆和造纸厂份额增加了一倍以上(图1),当时占据最大份额的外资来源国为瑞典和南非,目前印度尼西亚已成为北美浆纸行业最大的外商投资国,其次是瑞典。除巴西和智利外,全球主要浆纸企业几乎都在北美市场进行了投资,无论是特种纸、包装纸、生活用纸还是纸浆,这些产品投资都符合北美地区的市场发展模式。外资工厂占北美商品浆供应量的15%以上,占生活用纸市场的10%,特种纸市场的20%以上,平均占整个北美纸浆和造纸总产量的10%。
