How can Practitioners Support citizen Volunteers in Disaster Risk Reduction? Insight from “Good and Ready” in Aotearoa New Zealand

Global and national policy frameworks emphasize the importance of people's participation and volunteers' role in disaster risk reduction. While research has extensively focused on volunteers in disaster response and recovery, less attention has been paid on how organizations involved in disaster risk management can support volunteers in leading and coordinating communitybased disaster risk reduction. In 2019, the New Zealand Red cross piloted the Good and Ready initiative in Auckland,Aotearoa New Zealand, with the objective to empower local people in resilience building with a focus on volunteers and community participation. This research examined the positive and negative outcomes of Good and Ready and investigated volunteers' experiences in the disaster resilience initiative. It involved the codesign of a questionnaire-based survey using participatory methods with Good and Ready volunteers, the dissemination of the survey to gather volunteers' viewpoints, and a focus group discussion with participatory activities with Red cross volunteers. The findings highlight that a key challenge lies in finding a balance between a program that provides flexibility to address contextual issues and fosters communities' ownership, versus a prescriptive and standardized approach that leaves little room for creativity and self-initiative. It pinpoints that supporting volunteers with technical training is critical but that soft skills training such as coordinating, communicating,or facilitating activities at the local level are needed. It concludes that the sustainability of Good and Ready requires understanding and meeting volunteers' motivations and expectations and that enhancing partnerships with local emergency management agencies would strengthen the program.

Modeling asymmetric fracture mechanics of Mg alloy wire in drawing process

In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted on the ductile fracture of a 2-mm diameter Mg-1Zn-0.5Mn-0.5Sr-0.1ca alloy wire during drawing. The hexagonally close-packed crystal structure of Mg alloys causes asymmetric fracture behavior, especially in the compression region. The aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive damage model for Mg alloy wire that accurately predicts ductile fracture, with a focus on the compression region. A novel experimental method was introduced to measure the ductile fracture of Mg alloy wires under different stress states. The wire drawing process was simulated using the Generalized Incremental Stress-State dependent damage(GISSMO)Model and the Semi-Analytical Model for Polymers(SAMP) model. The damage model's prediction and the experimental results were found to be in excellent agreement, especially in determining crack initiation. computational analysis established a safe zone diagram for die angle and reduction ratio, and experimental validation confirmed the feasibility of this approach. The proposed damage model can provide a practical and reliable analysis for optimizing the drawing process of Mg alloy wire.

Lunar Environment heliospheric X-ray Imager(LEXI)and Solar wind−Magnetosphere−Ionosphere Link Explorer(SMILE)will observe magnetosheath and its boundary motion in soft X-rays for understanding magnetopause reconnection modes under various solar wind conditions after their respective launches in 2024 and 2025.Magnetosheath conditions,namely,plasma density,velocity,and temperature,are key parameters for predicting and analyzing soft X-ray images from the LEXI and SMILE missions.We developed a userfriendly model of magnetosheath that parameterizes number density,velocity,temperature,and magnetic field by utilizing the global Magnetohydrodynamics(MHD)model as well as the pre-existing gas-dynamic and analytic models.Using this parameterized magnetosheath model,scientists can easily reconstruct expected soft X-ray images and utilize them for analysis of observed images of LEXI and SMILE without simulating the complicated global magnetosphere models.First,we created an MHD-based magnetosheath model by running a total of 14 OpenGGcM global MHD simulations under 7 solar wind densities(1,5,10,15,20,25,and 30 cm)and 2 interplanetary magnetic field Bz components(±4 nT),and then parameterizing the results in new magnetosheath conditions.We compared the magnetosheath model result with THEMIS statistical data and it showed good agreement with a weighted Pearson correlation coefficient greater than 0.77,especially for plasma density and plasma velocity.Second,we compiled a suite of magnetosheath models incorporating previous magnetosheath models(gas-dynamic,analytic),and did two case studies to test the performance.The MHD-based model was comparable to or better than the previous models while providing self-consistency among the magnetosheath parameters.Third,we constructed a tool to calculate a soft X-ray image from any given vantage point,which can support the planning and data analysis of the aforementioned LEXI and SMILE missions.A release of the code has been uploaded to a Github repository.

为提升被控系统在整个工作频域内的动态性能,本文提出一种时频(time-frequency,TF)控制方法的理论框架,该框架通过应用小波分析技术以提高传统控制器性能的方式达到上述目标.在阐述了此框架下TF控制机理的基础上,结合传统PI控制方法设计了一种时频PI(time-frequency PI,TFPI)控制器,并对TFPI控制器中时频参数的设计原理进行了分析.针对TFPI控制器中参数众多所导致的整定工作量增大的问题,结合最优控制理论中积分型性能指标的概念,建立了以单纯形优化方法为手段的参数自动寻优策略.最后以电磁阀控制液压缸系统模型为例进行了控制器硬件在环仿真测试.阶跃响应结果显示,在超调量不超过1%的要求下,相对传统PI控制器0.15s左右的响应时间,TFPI控制器响应时间可达0.06s,在不失稳定性的情况下显著提升系统的动态性能;此外,与文献中其他两种TF控制算法亦进行了仿真比较,结果进一步证明了该控制方法在系统动态性能提升方面的有效性.

The value of the INFEcTIONS scoring system in identifying bacterial infections among patients presenting at the emergency department of a middle-income country:A pilot study

Purpose:To investigate which scoring system is the most accurate tool in predicting mortality among the infected patients who present to the emergency department in a middle-income country,and to validate a new scoring system to predict bacterial infections.Methods:This was a retrospective,single-center study among patients who were admitted via the emergency department of a public hospital.All patients who were started on antibiotics were included in the study,while patients agedcluded.Data collected includeding patients'demographics,vital signs and basic laboratory parameters like white blood cell count and creatinine.The sensitivity and specificity of different scoring systems were calculated as well as their negative and positive predictive values.Logistic regression was used to derive a novel early warning system for bacterial infections.The area under the receiver operating characteristic(AUROc)was computed for each scoring model.Results:In total,109 patients were included in this study.The quick sequential organ failure assessment(qSOFA),search out severity and rapid acute physiology score had the highest AUROc(≥0.89)for predicting mortality,while qSOFA and universal vital assessment were the simplest scoring systems with an AUROc>0.85;however,these scoring systems failed to predict whether patients were truly infected.The INFEcTIONS(short for impaired mental status,not conscious,fast heart rate,elevated creatinine,high temperature,on inotrope,low oxygen,high neutrophils and high sugar)model reached an AUROc of 0.88 to more accurately predict the infectious state of a patient.conclusions:Middle-income countries should use the qSOFA or universal vital assessment score to identify the sickest patients in emergency department.The INFEcTIONS score may help recognize patients with bacterial infections,but it should be further validated in multiple countries prior to widely use.

Elevated brain temperature under severe heat exposure impairs cortical motor activity and executive function

Background:Excessive heat exposure can lead to hyperthermia in humans,which impairs physical performance and disrupts cognitive function.While heat is a known physiological stressor,it is unclear how severe heat stress affects brain physiology and function.Methods:Eleven healthy participants were subjected to heat stress from prolonged exercise or warm water immersion until their rectal temperatures(T_(re))attained 39.5℃,inducing exertional or passive hyperthermia,respectively.In a separate trial,blended ice was ingested before and during exercise as a cooling strategy.Data were compared to a control condition with seated rest(normothermic).Brain temperature(T_(br)),cerebral perfusion,and task-based brain activity were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging techniques.Results:T_(br)in motor cortex was found to be tightly regulated at rest(37.3℃±0.4℃(mean±SD))despite fluctuations in T_(re).With the development of hyperthermia,T_(br)increases and dovetails with the rising T_(re).Bilateral motor cortical activity was suppressed during high-intensity plantarflexion tasks,implying a reduced central motor drive in hyperthermic participants(T_(re)=38.5℃±0.1℃).Global gray matter perfusion and regional perfusion in sensorimotor cortex were reduced with passive hyperthermia.Executive function was poorer under a passive hyperthermic state,and this could relate to compromised visual processing as indicated by the reduced activation of left lateral-occipital cortex.conversely,ingestion of blended ice before and during exercise alleviated the rise in both T_(re)and T_(bc)and mitigated heat-related neural perturbations.conclusion:Severe heat exposure elevates T_(br),disrupts motor cortical activity and executive function,and this can lead to impairment of physical and cognitive performance.

The zebrafish field is ringing in the new year with a publication from Yonghua Sun's laboratory(Wang et al.,2023)of a cocktail of germline factors that can induce all cells of the zebrafish embryo into primordial germ cells(PGcs)at phenomenal rates.This major advance is not only of great interest to germ cell biologists,but it has important applications to the entire zebrafish field,as shown in Wang et al.(2023).

SARS-coV-2 variants are associated with different clinical courses in children with MIS-c

Background Recent infection with SARS‑coV-2 in children has been associated with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children(MIS-c).SARS‑coV-2 has undergone different mutations.Few publications exist about specific variants and their correlation with the severity of MIS-c.Methods This was a single-center,retrospective study including all patients admitted with MIS-c at Rady children’s Hospital-San Diego between May 2020 and March 2022.Local epidemiologic data,including viral genomic information,were obtained from public records.Demographics,clinical presentation,laboratory values,and outcomes were obtained from electronic medical records.Results The analysis included 104 pediatric patients.Four MIS-c waves were identified.circulating variants in San Diego during the first wave included clades 20A to c.During the second wave,there were variants from clades 20A to c,20G,21c(Epsilon),20I(Alpha),and 20J(Gamma).The third wave had Delta strains(clades 21A,21I,and 21J),and the fourth had Omicron variants(clades 21K,21L,and 22c).MIS-c presented with similar symptoms and laboratory findings across all waves.More patients were admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit(PIcU)(74%)and required inotropic support(63%)during the second wave.None of the patients required mechanical circulatory support,and only two required invasive ventilatory support.There was no mortality.conclusions The various strains of SARS-coV-2 triggered MIS-c with differing severities,with the second wave having a more severe clinical course.Whether the differences in disease severity across variants were due to changes in the virus or other factors remains unknown.
