Workers'task specialization and division of labor are critical features of social insects'ecological *** has been proposed that the division of labor relies on response threshold models:individuals varying their sensitivity(and responsiveness)to biologically relevant stimuli and performing a specific task when a stimulus exceeds an internal *** this work,we study carbohydrate and protein responsiveness and their relation to worker task specialization in Vespula germanica,an invasive social *** sucrose and peptone responsiveness of two different subcastes,preforagers and foragers,was determined by stimulating the antenna of the wasps with increasing concentrations of the solution and quantifying whether each concentration elicited a licking *** studied responsiveness in five different ways:(1.response threshold,(2)concentration 50(concentration to which at least 50%of wasps responded),(3)maximum response,(4)mean scores and(5)median *** results suggest that V germanica foragers are more sensitive to sucrose(lower thresholds)than preforager ***,we found no differences for peptone thresholds(i.e.,a protein resource).Nonetheless,this is the first study to investigate response thresholds for protein *** intercaste variation in sucrose responsiveness shown in our work contributes to the existing knowledge about response threshold theory as a mechanism for task specialization observed in V germanica.

By suppression subtractive hybridization, rapid amplification of cDNA ends and gene walking methods, interferon stimulated genes (ISGs), Viperin and ISG1., and their promoters have been cloned and characterized from snakehead channa argus. The Viperin cDNA was found to be 1.74 nt and contain an open reading frame (ORF) of 1.59 nt that translates into a putative peptide of 352 amino acid (aa). The putative peptide of Viperin shows high identity to that in teleosts and mammals except for the N-terminal 70 aa. The ISG1. cDNA was found to be 758 nt and contain an ORF of 468 nt that translates into a putative peptide of 1.5 aa. The putative peptide of ISG1. is composed of two tandem repeats of ubiquitin-like (UBL) domains, and a canonical conjugation motif (LRGG) at c-terminal. Viperin and ISG1. promoter regions were characterized by the presence of interferon stimulating response elements (ISRE) and γ-IFN activation sites (GAS). ISRE is a feature of IFN-induced gene promoter and partially overlaps interferon regulatory factor (IRF) 1.and IRF2 recognition sites. GAS is responsible for the γ-IFN mediated transcription. One conserved site for NF-κB was found in the promoter region of Viperin. This is the first report of conservative binding motif for NF-κB in accordance with the consensus sequence (GGGRNNYYcc) among teleost ISG promoters. Moreover, there were also TATA, cAAT and Sp1.transcription factor sites in Viperin and ISG1. promoters. In 5′ untranslated region (UTR), snakehead ISG1. gene contains a single intron, which differs from Viperin gene. The transcripts of Vipeirn and ISG1. mRNA were mainly expressed in head kidney, posterior kidney, spleen and gill. The expression levels in liver were found to increase obviously in response to induction by IFN-inducer poly I∶c.

Preliminary examination of electrochemical and spectroscopic features of trithiocarbonate collectors for sulfide mineral flotation

The redox potentials of xanthate/dixanthogen (dithiocarbonate/di dithiocarbonate, DTc/(DTc) 2) and trithiocarbonate/di trithiocarbonate (TTc/(TTc) 2) couples have been measured for the potassium salts. The spectroscopic characteristics of these sulfide mineral collectors were determined by FTIR and UV analysis. Electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements at a pyrite surface provided the basis to analyze the effect of the functional group ( O cS 2 versus S cS 2) on the hydrophobic surface state. Results from this preliminary examination are discussed with respect to the nature of collector adsorption and the pyrite flotation response.

Benthic foraminifera and bottom water evolution in themiddle-southern Okinawa Trough during the last 1. ka

A piston sediment core E01. from the middle-southern Okinawa Trough was investigated. A preliminary study of the deep-water evolution since 1. cal. ka BP was performed basedon the quantitative census data of benthic foraminiferal fauna, together with planktonic foraminiferal oxygen and carbon isotope, AMS1.c dating, and the previous results achieved in thesouthern Okinawa Trough. The result shows that the benthic fauna was dominated by Buliminaaculeata (d′Orbigny), Uvigerina peregrina (cushman), Hispid Uvigerina and Uvigerina dirupta(Todd) during the glaciation-deglaciation before 9.2 cal. ka BP, while Epistominella exigua(Brady), Pullenia bulloides (d′Orbigny), cibicidoides hyalina (Hofker), Sphaeroidina bulloides(d’Orbigny) and Globocassidulina subglobosa (Brady) predominated the fauna in the post-glaciaperiod after 9.2 cal. ka BP. The benthic foraminifera accumulation rate (BFAR), paleoproductivityestimates and benthic foraminiferal assemblage conformably indicate that surface water paleoproductivity and organic matter flux during the glaciation-deglaciation were higher than those othe post-glacial period in the middle-southern Okinawa Trough, and gradually enhanced from thesouthern to the central Okinawa Trough during the glaciation-deglaciation, which could becaused by the discrepancy of the terrigenous nutrients supply. High abundances of E. exigua, anindicator of pulsed organic matter input, after 9.2 cal. ka BP may indicate that the intensity oseasonally riverine pulsed flux during the post-glacial period was stronger than that of the glaciation-deglaciation period, and the seasonal influx in the central trough might be stronger than inthe south. The temporal distributions of the typical species indicating bottom water oxygen content and ventilation condition show that the ventilation of the bottom water during the post-glaciaperiod is more active than the glaciation-deglaciation, which reflects that the evolution of the intermediate and deep waters of the n

Investigation of HcAR2 antagonists as a potential strategy to modulate bovine leukocytes

Background Dairy cows experiencing ketosis after calving suffer greater disease incidence and are at greater risk of leaving the herd. In vitro administration of beta-hydroxybutyric acid(BHBA;the primary blood ketone) has inhibitory effects on the function of bovine leukocytes. BHBA is a ligand of HcAR2 and the activation of these receptors promotes an anti-inflammatory response which may be related with immunosuppression observed in transition dairy cattle. The objective of this study was to identify and test antagonists for HcAR2 in bovine immune cells cultured with *** We observed expression of HcAR2 at the protein level within lymphocytes, monocytes, and granulocytes. The proportion of cells expressing HcAR2 tended to be greater in mid-lactation compared to early lactation cows;the increase was a result of increased proportion of T and B cells expressing HcAR2. Stimulation of HcAR2 with niacin or BHBA promoted ca^(2+) mobilization in neutrophils and mononuclear cells. Mononuclear cells treated with BHBA had diminished intracellular ca^(2+) responses when HcAR2 was knocked down by si RNA silencing, indicating ca^(2+) mobilization was mediated by HcAR2 signaling. Two candidate antagonists for HcAR2, synthesized from niacin(NA-1.and NA-5), were tested;monocytes and neutrophils pre-treated with NA-1.and NA-5 had reduced ca^(2+) mobilization after incubation with BHBA. Furthermore, NA-5 but not NA-1.prevented BHBA-associated reductions in cyclic *** We demonstrated that HcAR2 is present on bovine leukocytes and has greater expression later in lactation. We confirmed that BHBA and niacin derived HcAR2 antagonists alter bovine leukocyte activity. Our results demonstrate that both BHBA and niacin affect bovine leukocyte ca^(2+) mobilization in a HcAR2-dependent manner.

The humilith series of lignite, longflame coal, gas coal, fat coal, coking coal, lean coal, meagre coal and anthracite are measured by FIR1.00 infrared spectrophotometer. The variation curve between the infrared absorption wave number of aromaticring c--c bond of vitrinite and its reflectance values are gained, which shows the shift of infrared absorption wave number of aromaticring c--c bond of humic coals towards lower wave number with the increase of coalification. It is believed that the coal rank of humilith series can be determined and more evolutional information about coal composition and structure can be obtained by the infrared spectroscopic method.

Butt joining of 5A02 aluminum alloy to 304 stainless steel sheets was conducted using gas tungsten arc welding-brazing process with Al-1.%Si and Zn-1.%Al flux-cored filler wires. The effects of gap width and groove on steel side on the microstructure and tensile strength of the resultant joints were investigated. For the joint made with 0mm-wide gap and without groove on steel side, severe incomplete brazing zone occurred along the side and bottom surfaces of steel, and consequently seriously deteriorated the joint strength. However, presetting 1.5mm-wide gap or with groove on steel side could promote the wetting of molten filler metal on the faying surfaces, and then significantly enhance the joint strength. Moreover, post-weld heat treatment could further improve the tensile strength of the joints. During tensile testing, the specimens from the joints made with Al-1.%Si flux-cored filler wire fractured through the weld or interfacial layer, but those from the heat-treated joints made with Zn-1.%Al flux-cored filler wire fractured in the aluminum base metal.
