Ethylene-inhibiting compound 1-mcp delays leaf senescence in cotton plants under abiotic stress conditions

cotton （Gossypium hirsutum l.） plants produce more ethylene when subjected to abiotic stresses, such as high temperatures and drought, which result in premature leaf senescence, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and thus decreased yield. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the ethylene-inhibiting compound 1-methylcyclopropene （I-mcp） treatment of cotton plants can delay leaf senescence under high temperature, drought, and the aging process in controlled environ- mental conditions. potted cotton plants were exposed to 1-mcp treatment at the early square stage of development. The protective effect of 1-mcp against membrane damage was found on older compared to younger leaves, indicating 1-mcp could lower the stress level caused by aging. Application of 1-mcp resulted in reduction of lipid peroxidation, membrane leakage, soluble sugar content, and increased chlorophyll content, in contrast to the untreated plants under heat stress, suggesting that 1-mcp treatment of cotton plants may also have the potential to reduce the effect of heat stress in terms of delayed senescence. Application of 1-mcp caused reductions of lipid peroxidation, membrane leakage, and soluble sugar content, together with increases in water use efficiency （WUE）, water potential, chlorophyll content, and fluorescence quantum efficiency, compared to the untreated plants under drought, suggesting that 1-mcp treatment of cotton plants may also have the ability to reduce the level of stress under drought conditions. In conclusion, 1-mcp treatment of cotton should have the potential to delay senescence under heat and drought stress, and the aging process. Additionally, 1-mcp is more effective under stress than under non-stress conditions.

Second-generation direct-acting-antiviral hepatitis c virus treatment: Efficacy, safety, and predictors of SVR12

AIm To gather data on the antiviral efficacy and safety of second generation direct acting antiviral(DAA) treatment with respect to sustained virological response(SVR) 12 wk after conclusion of treatment, and to determine predictors of SVR12 in this *** Two hundred and sixty patients treated with SOF combination partners pR(n = 51), R(n = 10), SmV(n = 30), DcV(n = 81), lDV(n = 73), or 3D(n = 15).144/260 were pre-treated, 89/260 had liver cirrhosis, 56/260 had portal hypertension with platelets l, 25/260 had a mElD score ≥ 10 and 17/260 were postliver transplantation patients. 194/260 had HcV GT1, 44/260 HcV *** Two hundred and forty/256(93.7%) patients achieved SVR12(m ITT); 4/260 were lost to follow-up. SVR12 rates for subgroups were: 92% for SOF/DcV, 93% for each SOF/SmV, SOF/pR, 94% for SOF/lDV, 100% for 3D, 94% for pretreated, 87% for liver cirrhosis, 82% for patients with platelets l, 88% post-liver transplantation, 95% for GT1 a, 93% for GT1 b, 90% for GT3, 100% for GT2, 4, and 6. 12 patients suffered from relapse, 6 prematurely discontinued treatment, of which 4 died. Negative predictors of SVR12 were a platelet count l, mElD score ≥ 10(p liver cirrhosis(p = 0.005) at baseline. In Interferonfree treatment GT3 had significantly lower SVR rates than GT1(p = 0.016). Side effects were mild. cONclUSION Excellent SVR12 rates and the favorable side-effect profile of DAA-combination therapy can be well translated into "real-world". patients with advanced liver disease, signs of portal hypertension, especially with platelets l and patients with GT3 are in special need for further research efforts to overcome comparatively higher rates of virological failure.

Increasing pancreatic cancer is not paralleled by pancreaticoduodenectomy volumes in Brazil:A time trend analysis

Background: currently, surgical resection represents the only curative treatment for pancreatic cancer(pc), however, the majority of tumors are no longer resectable by the time of diagnosis. The aim of this study was to describe time trends and distribution of pancreaticoduodenectomies(pDs) performed for treating pc in Brazil in recent years. methods: Data were retrospectively obtained from Brazilian Health public System(namely DATASUS) regarding hospitalizations for pc and pD in Brazil from January 2008 to december 2015. pc and pD rates and their mortalities were estimated from DATASUS hospitalizations and analyzed for age, gender and demographic characteristics. Results: A total of 2364 pDs were retrieved. Albeit pc incidence more than doubled, the number of pDs increased only 37%. most pDs were performed in men(52.2%) and patients between 50 and 69 years old(59.5%). patients not surgically treated and those 70 years or older had the highest in-hospital mortality rates. The most developed regions(Southeast and South) as well as large metropolitan integrated municipalities registered 76.2% and 54.8% of the procedures, respectively. lmIm pD mortality fluctuated, ranging from 13.6% in 2008 to 11.8% in 2015. conclusions: This study suggests a trend towards regionalization and volume-outcome relationships for pD due to pc, as large metropolitan integrated municipalities registered most of the pDs and more stable mortality rates. The substantial differences between pD and pc increasing rates reveals a limiting step on the health system resoluteness. Reduction in the number of hospital beds and late access to hospitalization, despite improvement in diagnostic methods, could at least in part explain these findings.

The H9N2 subtype avian influenza virus(AIV)inactivated vaccine has been used extensively in poultry farms,but it often fails to stimulate a sufficiently high immune response in poultry in the field,although it works well in laboratory experiments;hence,the virus still causes economic damage every year and poses a potential threat to public *** on surveillance data collected in the field,we found that broilers with high levels of maternal-derived antibodies(mDAs)against H9N2 virus did not produce high levels of antibodies after vaccination with a commercial H9N2 inactivated *** contrast,specific pathogen-free(SpF)chickens without mDAs responded efficiently to that *** mDAs were mimicked by administering passively transferred antibodies(pTAs)into SpF chickens in the laboratory,similar results were observed:H9N2-specific pTAs inhibited humoral immunity against the H9N2 inactivated vaccine,suggesting that H9N2-specific mDAs might hinder the generation of antibodies when H9N2 inactivated vaccine was *** challenge with homologous H9N2 virus,the virus was detected in oropharyngeal swabs of the vaccinated and unvaccinated chickens with pTAs but not in the vaccinated chickens without pTAs,indicating that H9N2-specific mDAs were indeed one of the reasons for H9N2 inactivated vaccine failure in the *** different titers of pTAs were used to mimic mDAs in SpF chickens,high(HI=12 log2)and medium(HI=log 9 log2)titers of pTAs reduced the generation of H9N2-specific antibodies after the first vaccination,but a booster dose would induce a high and faster humoral immune response even of pTA *** study strongly suggested that high or medium titers of mDAs might explain H9N2 inactivated vaccine failure in the field.

From pBl to OBE in medical Education: What is the catch in pursuing Higher Education?

This communication sets out to delineate the link between two widely known educational concepts in recent development of higher education, the problem-based learning(pBl) and outcome-based education(OBE). In the contemporary literature of medical education, basic or clinical, pBl and OBE have often been noted and cited. Yet, they seemed to be treated as two independent domains of educational theories, one about "problems/cases" and the other about "outcomes/competencies".In reality, both represent an intertwined concept of action learning; i.e., learning by doing in learner-centered approach in a context of social process, as attempts to help break away from the teacher-centered traditional rote learning. Also, measurements of learners' competencies in both pBl and OBE are linked to the same assessment pyramid known as Blooms' s taxonomy of cognition. pBl, since its inception in 1969, has not reached its full educational potential despite its world-wide adoption in varying formats in which the practice of pBl has not been systematically or faithfully subscribing to the learning outcomes expected of pBl On the other hand, OBE, better conceptualized in 1994, brought forward considerable controversies in its educational effectiveness, because lacking a better defined platform of teaching and learning activities, the practice of OBE unfortunately often resulted in the selection of activities not conducive to high level learning outcomes. This communication attempts to link pBl closely with OBE in the effective delivery of medical education(which can be expanded to high education at large) based on authors' experiences and personal viewpoints.

Effect of Flow Field Geometry on Hydrodynamics of Flow in Redox Flow Battery

This study computationally investigates the hydrodynamics of different serpentine flow field designs for redox flow batteries,which considers the poiseuille flow in the flow channel and the Darcy flow porous *** Fluid Dynamics(cFD)results of the in-house developed code based on Finite Volume method(FVm)for conventional serpentine flow field(cSFF)agreed well with those obtained via *** deviation for pressure drop(Δp)was less than 5.1%for all the flow rates,thus proving the present cFD analysis’s validity on the modified variation of serpentine flow *** serpentine flow field-2(mSFF2)design provided least pressure drop across the channel and maximum velocity penetration across the porous substrate when compared to the other *** increases its wetting ability,which is very important in terms of mass transfer over potential for electrochemical reaction happening in the porous substrate to achieve effective electrochemical cell performance.
