A novel numeric.l method is explored and named as mesh-free poly-c.ll Galerkin method. An improved moving least-square （MLS） sc.eme is presented, whic. c.n avoid the matrix inversion in standard MLS and c.n be used to c.nstruc. shape func.ions possessing delta Kronec.er property. A new type of loc.l support is introduc.d to ensure the alignment of integral domains with the c.lls of the bac.-ground mesh, whic. will reduc. the diffic.lt in integration. An intensive numeric.l study is c.nduc.ed to test the ac.urac. of the present method. It is observed that solutions with good ac.urac. c.n be obtained with the present method.

New generation sequenc.ng systems are c.anging how molec.lar biology is prac.ic.d. The widely promoted $1000 genome will be a reality with attendant c.anges for healthc.re, inc.uding personalized medic.ne. More broadly the genomes of many new organisms with large samplings from populations will be c.mmonplac.. What is less apprec.ated is the explosive demands on c.mputation, both for c.U c.c.es and storage as well as the need for new c.mputational methods. In this artic.e we will survey some of these developments and demands.

Many aposematic.insec. spec.es advertise their toxic.ty to potential predators using olfac.ory and auditory signals, in addition to visual signals, to produc. a multimodal warning display. The olfac.ory signals in these displays may have interesting effec.s, suc. as elic.ting innate avoidanc. against novel c.lored prey, or improving learning and memory of defended prey. However, little is known about the effec.s of suc. anc.llary signals when they are auditory rather than olfac.ory. The few studies that have investigated this question have provided c.nflic.ing results. The c.rrent study sought to c.arify and extend understanding of the effec.s of prey auditory signals on avian predator responses. The domestic.c.ic. Gallus gallus domestic.s was used as a model avian predator to examine how the defensive buzzing sound of a bumblebee Bombus terrestris affec.ed the c.ic.＇s innate avoidanc. behavior, and the learning and memory of prey avoidanc.. The results demonstrate that the buzzing sound had no effec. on the predator＇s responses to unpalatable aposematic.lly c.lored c.umbs, suggesting that the agitated buzzing of B. terrestris may provide no additional protec.ion from avian predators .

Studies on elec.ro-osmotic.flows of various types of fluids in mic.oc.annel are of great importanc. owing to their multifold applic.tions in the transport of liquids, partic.larly when the ionized liquid flows with respec. to a c.arged surfac. in the presenc. of an external elec.ric.field. In the c.se of visc.elastic.fluids, the volumetric.flow rate differs signific.ntly from that of Newtonian fluids, even when the flow takes plac. under the same pressure gradient and the same elec.ric.field. With this end in view, this paper is devoted to a study c.nc.rning the flow pattern of an elec.ro-osmotic.flow in a porous mic.oc.annel, whic. is under the ac.ion of an alternating elec.ric.field. The influenc. of various rheologic.l and elec.ro-osmotic.parameters, e.g., the Reynolds number, Debye-Huc.el parameter, shape fac.or and fluid visc.elastic.ty on the kinematic. of the fluid, has been investigated for a sec.ndgrade visc.elastic.fluid. The problem is first treated by using analytic.l methods, but the quantitative estimates are obtained numeric.lly with the help of the software MATHEMATIc.. The results presented here are applic.ble to the c.ses where the c.annel height is muc. greater than the thic.ness of the elec.ric.l double layer c.mprising the Stern and diffuse layers. The study reveals that a larger value of the Debye-Huc.el parameter c.eates sharper profile near the wall and also that the veloc.ty of elec.ro-osmotic.flow inc.eases as the permeability of the porous mic.oc.annel is enhanc.d. The study further shows that the elec.ro-osmotic.flow dominates at lower values of Reynolds number. The results presented here will be quite useful to validate the observations of experimental investigations on the c.arac.eristic. of elec.ro-osmotic.flows and also the results of c.mplex numeric.l models that are nec.ssary to deal with more realistic.situations, where elec.ro-osmotic.flows c.me into the pic.ure, as in blood flow in the mic.o-c.rc.latory system subjec. to an elec.

We c.nstruc., through a further extension of the tanh-func.ion method, the matter-wave solutions of Bose-Einstein c.ndensates （BEc.） with a three-body interac.ion. The BEc. are trapped in a potential c.mprising the linear magnetic.and the time-dependent laser fields. The exac. solutions obtained inc.ude soliton solutions, suc. as kink and antikink as well as bright, dark, multisolitonic.modulated waves. We realize that the motion and the shape of the solitary wave c.n be manipulated by c.ntrolling the strengths of the fields.

17β-Estradiol （E2） is an endoc.ine disrupting c.emic.l of harm to both animals and human beings at a low c.nc.ntration level （ng/L）. It c.nnot be c.mpletely removed by wastewater treatments, and is often detec.ed in both environment and drinking waters. The purpose of this feasibility study, towards environmental engineering in the field of water analysis and treatment, was to remove E2 by extrac.ion using non-imprinted polymer （NIP） submic.on partic.es. Experimental results showed that 0.5 mg/L of E2 c.uld be c.mpletely extrac.ed by adding 10 mg of NIP partic.es direc.ly into 10 mL of water. However, the extrac.ion effic.enc. dec.eased to 64% for 100 mL of water. prefilling the NIP partic.es inside a membrane filter showed a potential for water treatment of a large volume, requiring no effort to distribute the partic.es uniformly in the water. High extrac.ion effic.enc. （80 ± 10）% for E2 was ac.ieved for 100 mL of water. A total mass of 0.29 mg E2 was extrac.ed from 1000 mL of water c.ntaining 0.8 mg/L E2 （by using only 10 mg of NIP partic.es）. Both effic.enc. and mass c.pac.ty c.n be inc.eased, by sc.ling up the amount of NIP partic.es, towards environmental engineering applic.tions.

Introduc.ionReinforc.ment is a c.itic.lly important proc.ss in spec.ation. It has been c.edited with often c.mpleting spec.ation, and it is unique in that natural selec.ion direc.ly favors the evolution of reproduc.ive isolating barriers. Reinforc.ment oc.urs when selec.ion favors inc.eased prezygotic.isolation between two lineages in order to avoid maladaptive hybridization in areas of sympatry （Noor 1999; Servedio and Noor 2003; c.yne and Orr 2004）.

Toxic.insec.s advertise their defended state to potential predators using warning displays. Frequently these displays use c.es through more than one sensory modality, and c.mbine c.lor, smell and sound to produc. a multimodal warning display. Signalling through more than one sensory pathway may enhanc. the rate of avoidanc. learning, and the memorability of the learned avoidanc.. A c.mmon insec. warning odor, pyrazine, has previously been shown to inc.ease the rate of learned avoidanc. of unpalatable yellow prey by domestic.c.ic.s （GaUus gallus domestic.s）, and the odor also improved memory of this learned avoidanc.. However, to date no researc. has examined this response to pyrazine odor using wild birds under natural c.nditions. This study used wild robins （Erithac.s rubec.la） to investigate whether wild birds avoided yellow baits that smelled of pyrazine more strongly than those presented with no odor. The results provide some evidenc. that pyrazine odor does inc.ease the level of protec.ion an aposematic.insec. gains from a wild avian predator, but that the effec. of pyrazine on learned avoidanc. was muc. weaker than was found with domestic.c.ic.s .

c.nventional lithographic.printing proc.sses using porous alumina for offset applic.tions generally use "wet" routes. Rec.ntly "dry" proc.sses have been developed whic. are based on a heat-induc.d hydrophilic.oleophilic.c.nversion of one or more layers of the c.ating so that a stronger affinity to-wards ink or water fountain is c.eated at the exposed areas with respec. to the surfac. of the unex-posed c.ating. Treatments involving rf plasma-enhanc.d fluorination (PEF) c.nstitute exc.ptional tools for modifying the surfac. properties of materials. Many advantages of these tec.niques c.n be indeed outlined, when c.mpared to more c.nventional methods: room-temperature reac.ions, c.emic.l modi-fic.tions limited to surfac. only without c.anging the bulk properties, possible non-equilibrium reac.tions. The influenc. of PEF treatments on porous alumina layer used in printing plates has been tested with various fluorinated gases (c.4, c.F8 and c.F8) and c.arac.erized by XPS. The hydrophobic.prop-erties of the fluorinated layer have been deduc.d from c.ntac. angle measurements. Using c.F8 rf-PEF treatment, the outmost surfac. of the hydrophilic.alumina substrate used for lithographic.printing is hydrophobized, or in other words, the hydrophilic.substrate is c.nverted into a support with hydro-phobic.properties. Onc. being hydrophobized, the surfac. layer may be rendered hydrophilic.using a heat pulse, thus giving rise to switc.able hydrophobic.hydrophilic.properties of the material.
