Analysing the Potential Impac. of c.imate c.ange on the Hydrologic.l Regime of the Upper Benue River Basin (North c.meroon)

In this study, we analyse the c.imate variability in the Upper Benue basin and assess its potential impac. on the hydrology regime under two different greenhouse gas emission sc.narios. The hydrologic.l regime of the basin is more vulnerable to c.imate variability, espec.ally prec.pitation and temperature. Observed hydroc.imatic.data (1950-2015) was analysed using a statistic.l approac.. The potential impac. of future c.imate c.ange on the hydrologic.l regime is quantified using the GR2M model and two c.imate models: HadGEM2-ES and MIROc. from c.IP5 under Rc. 4.5 and Rc. 8.5 greenhouse gas emission sc.narios. The main result shows that prec.pitation varies signific.ntly ac.ording to the geographic.l loc.tion and time in the Upper Benue basin. The trend analysis of c.imatic.parameters shows a dec.ease in annual average prec.pitation ac.oss the study area at a rate of -0.568 mm/year whic. represents about 37 mm/year over the time 1950-2015 c.mpared to the 1961-1990 referenc. period. An inc.ease of 0.7°c.in mean temperature and 14% of PET are also observed ac.ording to the same referenc. period. The two c.imate models predic. a warming of the basin of about 2°c.for both Rc. 4.5 and 8.5 sc.narios and an inc.ease in prec.pitation between 1% and 10% between 2015 and 2100. Similarly, the average annual flow is projec.ed to inc.ease by about +2% to +10% in the future for both Rc. 4.5 and 8.5 sc.narios between 2015 and 2100. Therefore, it is primordial to develop adaptation and mitigation measures to manage effic.ently the availability of water resourc.s.

n-Alkane bound biomarker fingerprints from asphaltenes in the bitumens of Eastern Dahomey Basin,Nigeria:Sourc. and genetic.implic.tions

The asphaltene frac.ions of the bitumens of Eastern Dahomey Basin in Nigeria,were analyzed by flash pyrolysis-gas c.romatography(Py-Gc.method in order to unravel its geoc.emic.l history and *** distributions of the initial biomarkers of the original oils from the pyrolysates are related to the assessment of organic.matter sourc.,paleo-redox c.nditions and sourc. environment during ***,it effec.ively establishes the genetic.relationship of the *** n-alkane distributions in the pyrolysates reveal nc.(9)-nc.(32)n-alkanes,maximizing at nc.(14),isoprenoids-pristane(Pr)and phytane(Ph),and some n-alkene *** peaks of low to medium-weight nc.(9)-nc.0 n-alkanes and low peaks of nc.(21)+n-alkanes c.arac.erize the *** reveal that abundant algal organic.matter with some terrigenous inputs c.ntributed to the sourc. roc. of the *** high c.nc.ntration of marine organic.matter inputs to the sourc. roc. is further c.nfirmed by the nc.(17)/nc.7 ratios whic. range from 5.39 to 19.82 and shows the predominanc. of nc.(17)*** general unimodal n-alkane distributions in the bitumens indic.te derivation from similar organic.matter types showing that they are genetic.lly *** anoxic.to suboxic.environmental c.nditions that prevailed during the deposition of the sediments is revealed by the isoprenoids,Pr/Ph ratios(0.72-1.28).Pristane/nc.(17)and Phytane/nc.(18)range from 0.16 to 0.33 and 0.22 to 0.56,revealing that the bitumens were from predominantly marine organic.matter(type II kerogen)preserved in a reduc.ng environment with no evidenc. of ***,the Ph/nc.(18)ratio and the c.oss plot of Pr+Ph/nc.(17)+nc.(18)allow the c.assific.tion of the bitumens into two subfamilies/groups(A and B).The bitumen samples have low wax c.ntent as indic.ted by the degree of waxiness ranging from 0.21 to 0.38 whic. c.nfirms low terrigenous *** on the c.rbon preferenc. index(c.I:0.92 to 1.55)and odd-even predo

The development, produc.ion and utilization of renewable energy, energy storage and green hydrogen and the assoc.ated tec.nologies in Sri Lanka have great potential to c.ntribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The island aims to ac.ieve 70% elec.ric.ty generation from renewable energy sourc.s by 2030 (within the target of 40% utilization of renewable energy sourc.s for the entire energy generation of the c.untry by 2030). The power sec.or has to invest US$11 billion from 2023 to 2030 to c.ntribute to reac.ing this target. This c.mmentary aims to provide a c.itic.l perspec.ive on the rec.mmendations of the report from the National Sc.enc. and Tec.nology c.mmission's 9th biennial c.nferenc. in 2023 on sc.enc. and tec.nology, the sub-thematic.tec.nic.l report on c.ean energy, energy storage and green hydrogen in line with the SDGs in the Sri Lankan c.ntext. The tec.nic.l report provides insightful rec.mmendations for Sri Lanka's energy sec.or under three main sec.ions: renewable energy, energy storage and green hydrogen. Also, it explores the potential of various renewable energy sourc.s, energy storage systems and green hydrogen as sustainable solutions to address the c.untry's energy c.allenges while emphasizing the spillover effec.s of them, whic. c.uld c.ntribute to the enterprise's job c.eation and uplift the ec.nomy. This c.mmentary provides a c.itic.l perspec.ive on c.ean energy, energy storage and green hydrogen in line with the United Nations SDGs in the Sri Lankan c.ntext based on a rec.nt report from the National Sc.enc. and Tec.nology c.mmission of Sri Lanka.
