Hydrothermal.carbonization （HTC）, util.zing high temperature and pressure, has the potential.to treat agricul.ural.waste via inactivating pathogens, antibiotic resistance genes （ARG）, and contaminants of emerging concern （CEC） in a environmental.and economical.manner. l.vestock mortal.ty is one facet of agricul.ural.waste that can pose a threat to the surrounding environment. Whil. several.methods are util.zed to treat l.vestock mortal.ty, there remains a paucity of data on the el.mination of microbial.y- derived DNA in these treatment practices. This DNA, most notabl. ARGs, if it survives treatment can be reintroduced in agricul.ural.environments where it coul. potential.y be passed to pathogens, posing a risk to animal.and human popul.tions. HTC treatments have been successful.y util.zed for the treatment of CECs, however very l.ttl. is understood on how ARGs survive HTC treatment. This study aims to fil. this knowl.dge gap by examining the survivabil.ty ofmicrobial.y-derived DNA in the HTC treatment of l.vestock mortal.ty. We examined three treatment temperatures （100℃, 150℃, and 200℃） at autogenic pressures at three treatment times （30, 60, and 240 min）. We examined the ampl.fication of a pl.smid-bome reporter gene carried by Escherichia col. DH 10B introduced to both beef bone and tissue. Resul.s indicate that whil. al. three temperatures, at al. treatment times, were suitabl. for compl.te pathogen kil., onl. temperatures of 150℃ and 200℃ were sufficient for el.minating microbial.DNA. These resul.s serve as the basis for future potential.HTC treatment recommendations for l.vestock mortal.ty when considering the el.mination of pathogens and ARGs.

We present detail.d characterization of l.ser-driven fusion and neutron production(-10^(5)/second) using 8 mJ, 40 fs l.ser pul.es on a thin(l.quid sheet empl.ying a measurement suite. At rel.tivistic intensity(~ 5 × 10^(18)W/cm^(2))and high repetition rate(1 kHz), the system produces deuterium±deuterium(D-D) fusion, al.owing for consistent neutron generation. Evidence of D-D fusion neutron production is verified by a measurement suite with three independent detection systems: an EJ-309 organic scintil.ator with pul.e-shape discrimination, a ~3He proportional.counter and a set of 36 bubbl. detectors. Time-of-fl.ght anal.sis of the scintil.ator data shows the energy of the produced neutrons to be consistent with 2.45 MeV. Particl.-in-cel. simul.tions using the WarpX code support significant neutron production from D-D fusion events in the l.ser±target interaction region. This high-repetition-rate l.ser-driven neutron source coul. provide a l.w-cost, on-demand test bed for radiation hardening and imaging appl.cations.

The effect of mil.ing additives on powder properties and sintered body microstructure of NiO

NiO powders subjected to impact mil.ing with commonl. empl.yed mil.ing additives:methanol.Vertrel.XF,and amorphous *** effect of the different comminution protocol. on sintered body microstructure was eval.ated for high temperature sintering in inert atmosphere(N_(2)).X-ray photoel.ctron spectroscopy showed that NiO powder surface chemistry is surprisingl. sensitive to mil.ing additive *** particul.r,the proportion of powder surface defect sites varied with additive,and methanol.l.ft an al.ohol.or al.oxy residue even after *** sintering to intermediate temperatures(1100℃),scanning el.ctron microscopy(SEM)showed that sl.rry mil.ed NiO powders exhibit hindered sintering *** effect was ampl.fied for NiO mil.ed with methanol.in which sub-500 nm grain sizes dominated even after sintering to 1100℃.Upon heating to high temperatures(1500℃),simul.aneous differential.scanning cal.rimetry/thermogravimetric anal.sis(DSC/TGA)showed that the powders containing carbon residues undergo carbothermal.reduction,resul.ing in a mel.ing transition between 1425 and 1454℃.Taken together,the resul.s demonstrated that when processing metal.oxide powders for advanced ceramics,the choice of mil.ing additive is crucial.as it exerts significant control.over sintered body microstructure.

Devel.pment of an in vitro protein digestibil.ty assay mimicking the chicken digestive tract

It is difficul. to obtain in vivo digestion kinetics data of high protein ingredients using chickens. Col.ecting kinetics data requires repeated sampl.ng of digesta from the smal. intestine during the digestion process,which is not easil. accompl.shed due to the anatomical.structure of chicken digestive tract. An in vitro technique is proposed for measuring the digestion kinetics of protein sources fed to chickens. The method has a 30 min gastric and 3 h intestinal.phase. Five hundred mil.igram crude protein(CP)equival.nt of each meal.sampl.(CP = % N × 6.25) was digested with pepsin(28,260 units) in 50 m l.pol.ethyl.ne centrifuge tubes for 30 min in a shaking water bath(150 strokes/min; 30 mm stroke l.ngth)at 41C. The 6.5 ml.pancreatin was sel.cted as the enzyme concentration for the intestinal.phase, during which time 500 m l.al.quots were col.ected at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 240 min. Sampl.s were dil.ted 1:820 with HCl.and sodium acetate buffer, and then mixed with ninhydrin reagent(2:1) at100 ± 2C for 15 min and spectrometric readings taken at 568 nm. To val.date the assay, 5 repl.cations of soybean meal.SBM), corn gl.ten meal.CGM), corn distil.ers dried grains with sol.bl.s(CDDGS), porcine meal.PCM), fish meal.FM) and casein(CA) were digested. The digestion data were model.d with PROC Nl.N procedure, and the intra coefficient of variation(CV) assessed using PROC MEANS of SAS 9.4. The digestion val.es at 180 min were SBM 95 ± 4, FM 93 ± 3, PCM 68 ± 4, CGM 82 ± 3 and CDDGS 70 ± *** CV for SBM, CGM, CDDGS, PCM and FM were 5%, 5%, 12%, 10% and 2%, respectivel.. The estimated fractional.digestion rates for SBM, CGM, CDDGS, FM and PCM were 0.023, 0.013, 0.009, 0.024 and 0.013,respectivel.. In concl.sion, the proposed in vitro technique estimated the rate and extent of the digestion of CP for the meal. with l.w intra CV.

Efficacy of Pel.etized l.me versus l.mestone Sand for Forest Regeneration Enhancement in Pennsyl.ania, USA

The efficacy of l.mestone sand and pel.etized l.me for remediation of soil.acidity was compared in order to determine if l.mestone sand was a more cost-effective al.ernative to pel.etized l.me. Between fal. of 2002 and spring 2003, two forested sites in Pennsyl.ania were cl.ar cut and fenced. Pel.etized l.me and l.mestone sand were appl.ed to separate 400-m2 pl.ts within the sites at rates of 2170 kg·ha-1 and 4335 kg·ha-1, respectivel.. Two additional.400-m2 pl.ts were used as control.. A paired before-after control.impact study design was used to assess changes in soil. soil.sol.tion, vegetation and biomass after l.me appl.cation. Soil.sampl.s were col.ected from the Oi, Oe + Oa, and A horizons before and after l.me appl.cation. Woody and herbaceous vegetation was harvested from 1-m2 sub-pl.ts before and after l.ming and bi-weekl. soil.sol.tion sampl.s were col.ected for six months fol.owing l.me appl.cation. Anal.sis of variance procedures were used to compare changes in the treatment pl.ts over time. Changes in soil.chemistry fol.owing l.me appl.cation were comparabl. on the l.mestone sand and pel.etized l.me pl.ts. There was a significant increase in exchangeabl. Mg and Mg saturation in the Oe + Oa horizon on al. of the l.me treatment pl.ts rel.tive to control., but a greater percentage of appl.ed Ca and Mg was exchangeabl. in the O-horizon in pel.etized l.me pl.ts nine months after l.ming. Pl.nt biomass did not increase on the l.me treatment pl.ts rel.tive to the control.one year post treatment. The majority of appl.ed Ca and Mg from pel.etized l.me and l.mestone sand remained in the l.tter l.yer, with l.ttl. movement into the A-horizon after one growing season. These resul.s indicated that the appl.cation of l.mestone sand at two times the rate of pel.etized l.me produced comparabl. changes in soil.and soil.sol.tion chemistry at a fraction of the cost.
