No independent associations between physical activity and clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with moderate to severe COVID-19

Background:Regular physical activity(PA)has been postulated to improve,or at least maintain,immunity across the life ***,the link between physical(in)activity and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)remains to be *** small-scale prospective cohort study is nested within a randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the possible associations between PA levels and clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with moderate to severe ***:Hospitalized patients with COVID-19(mean age:54.9 years)were recruited from the Clinical Hospital of the School of Medicine of the University of Sao Paulo(a quaternary referral teaching hospital)and from Ibirapuera Field Hospital,both located in Sao Paulo,*** level was assessed using the Baecke Questionnaire of Habitual Physical *** primary outcome was hospital length of *** secondary outcomes were mortality,admission to the intensive care unit(ICU),and mechanical ventilation ***:The median hospital length of stay was 7.0§4.0 days,median§IQR;3.3%of patients died,13.8%were admitted to the ICU,and 8.6%required mechanical *** linear regression models showed that PA indices were not associated with hospital length of stay(work index:b=-0.57(95%confidence interval(95%CI):-1.80 to 0.65),p=0.355;sport index:b=0.43(95%CI:-0.94 to 1.80),p=0.536;leisure-time index:b=1.18(95%CI:-0.22 to 2.59),p=0.099;and total activity index:b=0.20(95%CI:-0.48 to 0.87),p=0.563).None of the PA indices were associated with mortality,admission to the ICU,or mechanical ventilation requirement(all p>0.050).Conclusion:Among hospitalized patients with COVID-19,PA did not independently associate with hospital length of stay or any other clinically relevant *** findings should be interpreted as meaning that,among already hospitalized patients with more severe forms of COVID-19,being active is a potential protective factor likely outweighed by a cluster of comorbidities(e.

Water depths and flow velocities decisively influence the damage caused by flash *** Information System(GIS)is a powerful and useful tool,allowing the spatial analysis of results obtained by hydraulic modelling,namely from the HEC-RAS/HEC-GeoRAS *** GIS spatial analysis performed in this study seeks to explain and quantify the spatial relationships between the stream channel features and flow components during flash flood *** these relationships are generically known,there are few studies exploring this subject in different geographic contexts.A 1D hydraulic model was applied in a small watershed in Portugal,providing good results in the definition of floodable areas,water depths and longitudinal *** direct relationship was found between water depths and velocities in the floodable areas;however,negative strong correlations were found between the two flow components along the stream *** slope,channel and flood width,and roughness prove to be highly relevant on the longitudinal variations of water depths and velocities and on the location of maximum *** peak discharges and return periods(R;)can change the relationships between water depths and velocities at the same *** can be improved with more accurate elevation data for stream channels and floodplains.

BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a clinical condition associated with several liver diseases and it includes non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)in its broad spectrum as steatosis,steatohepatitis and ***,the criteria to define sarcopenia are diverse,and even those established in consensus have been discussed regarding their performance in making an accurate *** To evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia,using different methods,in patients with NAFLD,and its association with clinical-anthropometric *** This was an observational study of outpatients with *** was defined by the European Working Group Consensus on Sarcopenia in Older People of 2010(EWGSOP1)and 2018(EWGSOP2).The skeletal muscle index was used to estimate muscle mass,handgrip strength was assessed using the dynamometer and physical performance by walking a distance of four meters at usual walking *** non-invasive fibrosis scores,fibrosis-4(FIB-4)index and Aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index(APRI),were used to assess the absence and presence of *** Fifty-seven individuals with NAFLD were evaluated,the mean age(SD)was 52.7(11.3)years and 75.4%were *** assessed by FIB-4 and APRI was observed in 3.7%and 16.6%of patients with NAFLD,*** diagnosis of sarcopenia was identified only by EWGSOP1 in 3.5%of NAFLD patients,and the prevalence of probable/pre-sarcopenia was higher using the EWGSOP2 consensus at 26.3%,when compared to 1.8%with *** defined by EWGSOP1,was associated with grade I steatosis,but without overweight(P0.05).EWGSOP2 showed a greater number of patients with probable sarcopenia,and who were overweight(12(80.0%)),with a higher degree of steatosis[11(73.3%)and presence of fibrosis(1(6.7%),FIB-4 and 3(20.0%),APRI]compared to EWGSOP1[1(100%),0(0.0%),0(0.0%),FIB-4 and 0(0.0%),APRI,respectively].CONCLUSION The presen

Corrosion Caused by Sulfur Dioxide in Reinforced Concrete

The burning of fuel oil with high sulfur content in diverse industrial segments results in the generation of oxidized sulfur compounds (SOx). These emissions, directly or indirectly, lead to the deterioration of air quality with consequences including the development of lung diseases in the surrounding population, the generation of acid rain and damage to civil constructions, such as public buildings, public squares, historic monuments, bridges, etc. This article describes the mechanisms of corrosion that occur in reinforced concrete deterioration observed in an industrial plant by the action of direct emissions of sulfur dioxide. SO2 in this case study is from the burning of fuel oil high sulfur content from chimney of an industrial boiler. The deterioration of concrete was evaluated in the laboratory showing the formation of calcium sulfate and calcium sulfate hydrate associated with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and calcium oxide (CaO).

Predicting Business Insolvency： The Latvian Experience

This paper presents investigations of bankruptcy predicting models which can be useful for external users of a financial statement. Only the methods of financial analysis for insolvency prediction, useful on the basis of financial statements, were investigated. The paper studied the influence of insolvency on the development of the Latvian Economy, including such relevant points： dynamics of number of insolvency cases in Latvia, data of the payment discipline of debts, tax liabilities of the insolvent companies, dynamics of unemployment support payments. Empirical investigations shows that only Altman＇s z＇＂ and Fulmer＇s H models demonstrate accuracy above 80% in all analyzed business sectors and they are applicable for Latvian companies. The other models are useful to some particular business sector.

Environmental changes derived from global warming and human activities increase the intensity and frequency of stressful conditions for *** abiotic factors acting simultaneously enhance stress pressure and drastically reduce plant growth,yield,and *** combination causes a specific stress situation that induces a particular plant response different to the sum of responses to the individual ***,by comparing transcriptomic and proteomic profiles to different abiotic stress combinations in two citrus genotypes,Carrizo citrange(Citrus sinensis×Poncirus trifoliata)and Cleopatra mandarin(Citrus reshni),with contrasting tolerance to different abiotic stresses,we revealed key responses to the triple combination of heat stress,high irradiance and *** specific transcriptomic response to this stress combination in Carrizo was directed to regulate RNA metabolic pathways and translation processes,potentially conferring an advantage with respect to *** addition,we found endoplasmic reticulum stress response as common to all individual and combined stress conditions in both genotypes and identified the accumulation of specific groups of heat shock proteins(HSPs),such as small HSPs and HSP70s,and regulators of the unfolded protein response,BiP2 and PDIL2-2,as possible factors involved in citrus tolerance to triple stress *** together,our findings provide new insights into the acclimation process of citrus plants to multiple stress combination,necessary for increasing crop tolerance to the changing climatic conditions.

The balcony is responsible to a series of effects on the environmental behavior of a building,mainly in relation of thermal comfort and air distribution to their indoor *** a very common practice in several metropolitan areas is the closing with retractable glass panels in balcony *** work analyzed the effects of glazed balconies upon thermal comfort in a hot tropical *** parameters were carried out in a flat alternating the conditions of retractable glass panels to *** simulations were performed considering closing or not the glass door that divides the balcony room;the building material used on the balcony sill;and the use of curtains or shading *** results show the maximum mean hourly temperatures recorded on the balcony during the period when the retractable glass panels were closed,reaching peaks between 31.7 and 39.2°C,above the comfort range recommended by ASHRAE *** situations simulated show the thermal discomfort prevails in the use of the closed glass panels reaching DhTD of 94.55°C/***,this practice of using most of the closed retractable glass panels in the balconies presents disadvantages and inefficiencies especially in hot and humid tropical climate regions.

The Benefits of SGLT2 Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Prevention, Glycemic Control and Weight Loss, in the Treatment of Diabetes

The sodium and glucose co-transporter inhibitors type 2 (SGLT2) comprises a new class of hypoglycemic drugs to control type 2 diabetes mellitus, in an attempt to add new non-existing benefits to the so far arising classes. Regarding this new class of drugs, represented by dapaglifozin, canaglifozin and empaglifozin, it is important to highlight the benefits brought by these medications to combat hyperglycemia with insulin-independent mechanisms that are beyond glucose reduction, such as cardiovascular events prevention, reduction in HbA1c, weight loss and blood pressure lowering. Recently, a relevant study (Empa-Reg) brought hope and set the spotlight on the prevention of cardiac events among diabetic patients, which is the main cause of mortality within this group. However, despite coming out as a good treatment option, SGLT2 inhibitors are under constant clinical research and, as a new drug, it should be carefully carried out regarding the long-term effects of glycosuria and other possible side effects, such as the observed increase in the incidence of bladder, breast cancer and bone fractures, which require further studies. Therefore, these compounds might represent a landmark approach for the treatment of diabetes.
