Candida albicans isolated from urine:Phenotypic and molecular identification,virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility

Objective: To isolate Candida albicans(C. albicans) from the urine of hospitalized patients and assess the virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility profiles of the ***: Yeasts were identified using the chromogenic medium CHROMagar?, the VITEK~?2 system, hypertonic Sabouraud broth, tobacco agar, polymerase chain reaction,and DNA sequencing. The evaluated virulence factors were proteinase production,phospholipase production, and biofilm production on polystyrene. The broth microdilution technique was used to determine the minimum inhibitory ***: All yeasts isolated from urine were identified as C. albicans using both classical and molecular methods. Although 91.3% of the isolates showed no phospholipase activity, 56.5% showed strong proteinase activity and 91.7% produced biofilm. All microorganisms were sensitive to fluconazole, voriconazole and amphotericin B, but 56.5% of the yeasts showed resistance to ***: C. albicans isolates from urine have a high capacity for virulence and can be associated with infectious processes. Furthermore, the high percentage of isolates resistant to itraconazole is important because this antifungal agent is commonly used to treat fungal infections in the hospital environment.

Late diagnosis and TCD8 immune response profile of cutaneous tuberculosis: A case report

Introduction: Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) is a rare form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis that, when associated with late diagnosis, worsen the quality of life of the sick individuals. This report presents a case of late diagnosis of CTB. Unusual clinical manifestations retarded the correct tuberculosis diagnosis for more than a year. The immune response elicited by this type of tuberculosis as well as the factors that might contribute to the delay in diagnosis was evaluated and discussed. Methodology: Clinical evaluation and flow cytometric analyses of PBMC were realized for a case of CTB and a healthy individual as a control. Results: M. tuberculosis specific TCD8+ cell response was analyzed by flow cytometry and revealed positive cells for IL-17, IL-10, TGF-β and IDO. The CTB patient presented higher percentage of those cells when compared to a healthy donor. However, TCD8 cells positive for the important protective cytokine, IFN-γ was decreased in the CTB patient. Conclusion. The assessment of the M. tuberculosis specific TCD8+ immune response showed a regulatory/modulatory phenotype with a reduced IFN-γ response when compared to the healthy control that could have contributed to the CTB infection.

Corrosion Caused by Sulfur Dioxide in Reinforced Concrete

The burning of fuel oil with high sulfur content in diverse industrial segments results in the generation of oxidized sulfur compounds (SOx). These emissions, directly or indirectly, lead to the deterioration of air quality with consequences including the development of lung diseases in the surrounding population, the generation of acid rain and damage to civil constructions, such as public buildings, public squares, historic monuments, bridges, etc. This article describes the mechanisms of corrosion that occur in reinforced concrete deterioration observed in an industrial plant by the action of direct emissions of sulfur dioxide. SO2 in this case study is from the burning of fuel oil high sulfur content from chimney of an industrial boiler. The deterioration of concrete was evaluated in the laboratory showing the formation of calcium sulfate and calcium sulfate hydrate associated with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and calcium oxide (CaO).

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Physical Exercise on Obesity

Obesity is a disease of epidemic proportions, associated with chronic inflammation in response to increased secretion of inflammatory cytokines originating in adipose tissue. Exercise has been shown to be effective in combating these changes. The aim of this study was to review the anti-inflammatory effect of physical exercise in the pathogenesis of obesity. We conducted a search of the terms “exercise”, “obesity” and “inflammation” on Medline and PubMed databases, restricting results to clinical trials published since 2011. The retrieved studies showed that physical exercise could, via different pathways, reduce levels of CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α, as well as other proinflammatory markers. Additionally, exercise was able to increase expression of genes related to the production of nitric oxide, positively modulating endothelial function and chronic inflammation in obese patients, with or without caloric restriction. In conclusion, aerobic exercise of moderate intensity is an effective intervention strategy for chronic inflammation associated with obesity.

Extragastric manifestations of Helicobacter pylori infection: Possible role of bacterium in liver and pancreas diseases

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is an ancient microorganism that has co-evolved with humans for over 60000 years. This bacterium typically colonizes the human stomach and it is currently recognized as the most common infectious pathogen of the gastroduodenal tract. Although its chronic infection is associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer, dysplasia, neoplasia, MALT lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma, it has been suggested the possible association of H. pylori infection with several extragastric effects including hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Since a microorganism resembling H. pylori was detected in samples from patients with hepatobiliary disorders, several reports have been discussed the possible role of bacteria in hepatic diseases as hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and fibrosis. Additionally, studies have reported the possible association between H. pylori infection and pancreatic diseases, especially because it has been suggested that this infection could change the pancreatic physiology. Some of them have related a possible association between the microorganism and pancreatic cancer. H. pylori infection has also been suggested to play a role in the acute and chronic pancreatitis pathogenesis, autoimmune pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Considering that association of H. pylori to liver and pancreas diseases needs further clarification, our work offers a review about the results of some investigations related to the potential pathogenicity of H. pylori in these extragastric diseases.

Novel hepatocellular carcinoma molecules with prognostic and therapeutic potentials

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), the predominant form of primary liver cancer, is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancerrelated death. The difficulty to diagnose early cancer stages, the aggressive behaviors of HCC, and the poor effectiveness of therapeutic treatments, represent the reasons for the quite similar deaths per year and incidence number. Considering the fact that the diagnosis of HCC typically occurs in the advanced stages of the disease when the therapeutic options have only modest efficacy, the possibility to identify early diagnostic markers could be of significant benefit. So far, a large number of biomarkers have been associated to HCC progression and aggressiveness, but many of them turned out not to be of practical utility. This is the reason why active investigations are ongoing in this field. Given the huge amount of published works aimed at the identification of HCC biomarkers, in this review we mainly focused on the data published in the last year, with particular attention to the role of(1) molecular and biochemical cellular markers;(2) micro-interfering RNAs;(3) epigenetic variations; and(4) tumor stroma. It is worth mentioning that a significant number of the HCC markers described in the present review may be utilized also as targets for novel therapeutic approaches, indicating the tight relation between diagnosis and therapy. In conclusion, we believe that integrated researches among the different lines of investigation indicated above should represent the winning strategies to identify effective HCC markers and therapeutic targets.

Functional and Structural Arterial Vessel Features of Female Patients with Stable Dermatomyositis and Antisynthetase Syndrome

Introduction: Dermatomyositis (DM) and antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) show a high frequency of metabolic syndrome, which can be preceded by endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness. To date, only one study has evaluated these vessel parameters in DM, and no study of ASS exists. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the structural and functional arterial of arterial vessels in DM and ASS. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 21 adult female patients (14 DM and 7 ASS) who were age-, gender- and ethnicity-matched to 12 healthy individuals. Patients using lipid lowering agents or prednisone at doses ≥ 0.25 mg/kg/day, and patients with uncontrolled systemic arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiac insufficiency, and disease activity were excluded. Arterial stiffness was evaluated using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), and endothelial function was evaluated using dependent flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery. Results: The mean age of patients with DM or ASS were 45.4 ± 8.6 and 44.0 ± 6.1 years, respectively (P = 1.000), and patients were predominantly of white ethnicity. Six DM patients and three ASS patients had systemic arterial hypertension, whereas 9 DM patients and six ASS patients had dyslipidemia. Endothelial baseline diameter, hyperemia diameter and FMD values were similar among the three groups (P > 0.05). Moreover, the median FMD values were also similar between the patients with DM and patients with ASS [8.3% (4.5% - 10.9%) vs. 6.0% (−1.8% - 8.2%);P = 0.585]. The PWV values were comparable among the three groups (P = 0.253). In addition, no difference was observed between patients with DM and patients with ASS (7.4 ± 0.8 m/s vs. 7.4 ± 0.9 m/s;P = 1.000). Conclusions: Despite the high prevalence of dyslipidemia and systemic arterial hypertension, our female patients with stable DM and ASS had FMD and PWV values comparable to those of the control group.

Bioaccessibility of Phenolic Compounds of Araucaria angustifolia from Seed Water Extracts during In Vitro Simulated Gastrointestinal Conditions

Food by-products containing bioactive substances, such as phenolic compounds, have garnered attention due to the possibility to increase the value of what would otherwise be considered residue. The present work sought to evaluate the extraction of phenolic compounds and their bioaccessibility from pinhão “comum” (Araucaria angustifolia var. angustifolia) and pinhão “macaco” (Araucaria angustifolia var. indehiscens) cooking water extracts during in vitro simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Our findings indicate that changes occurred depending on the type of extract and the gastrointestinal step. Although both of the evaluated pinhão extracts displayed bioaccessible phenolic compounds, the gradual bioaccessibility decrease of pinhão “macaco” extract during in vitro simulated gastrointestinal condition steps, characterizes this extract as the one with the best functional property. The functional property is related to antioxidant properties which are able to generate protective effects against various diseases.
