Submarine groundwater discharge(SGD)has received increasing attention by studies on coastal areas;however,its effects on biogeochemical zonation have not been investigated to *** Huanghe River Estuary(HRE)is a world class river estuary with high turbidity,and heavy human *** study investigated how SGD is related to the benthic biogeochemistry of the *** on the distribution of several parameters(e.g.,salinity,temperature,dissolved oxygen(DO)levels,p H,radium isotopes,and nutrients),the HRE was subdivided into six different zones,and the SGD fluxes within each zone were quantified and *** highest SGD flux was found in the northwest nearshore zone,where it was more than one order of magnitude higher than in the offshore *** SGD resulted in low DO and p H,but high nutrient levels in the benthic boundary *** southeast nearshore zone was also characterized by high SGD flux,but benthic waters were more oxic because of the dominating inputs by the Huanghe *** data suggest that such a zonation would help to understand benthic biogeochemical *** SGD may not only contribute to the estuarine nutrient budget,but may also contribute to the formation of hypoxia and acidification.

Nicotine is a source of exogenous oxidative stress, which is associated with the pathogenesis of numerous diseases including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), whereas an antioxidant protein, peroxiredoxin 1 (prx 1), plays an important role in the modulation of this condition. This study was to investigate the association between prx 1 and tobacco-induced oxidative stress. The expression of prx 1 and GST in OSCC Tca8113 cells, which were pre-treated with nicotine, was determined. In the present study, MTT assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, RT-pCR and Western blot analyses, respectively, were conducted to assess cell viability, ROS level, and expression level of prx 1 and GST in nicotine-treated Tca8113 cells. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF- B) expression was detected by immuno-fluorescence. Our results showed the growth of Tca8113 cells was increased in a dose-dependent manner when cells were treated with nicotine at concentrations from 0.1 to 10 mol/L, but the proliferation of the cells decreased at 100 mol/L. ROS levels increased in all groups treated with nicotine at concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10, or 100 mol/L for 24h. prx 1 and GST mRNA and protein expression were up-regulated in cells treated with nicotine for the same time at different concentrations or at the same concentration for different times (pplasm to nucleus, the expression of NF- B was increased in nucleus. These results suggest that up-regulation of prx1 expression appears to be associated with tobacco-induced oxidative stress, which may play an important role in the pathogenesis of OSCC.

The relationship between reactive oxygen and nitrogen species(ROS-RNS)secretion and the concomitant biocorrosion of degradable magnesium(Mg)materials is poorly *** found that Mg foils implanted short term in vivo(24 h)displayed large amounts of proinflammatory F4/80+/iNOS+macrophages at the *** sought to investigate the interplay between biodegrading Mg materials(98.6%Mg,AZ31&AZ61)and macrophages(RAW 264.7)stimulated with lipopolysaccharide(RAW 264.7^(LpS))to induce ROS-RNS *** test how these proinflammatory ROS-RNS secreting cells interact with Mg corrosion in vitro,Mg and AZ61 discs were suspended approximately 2 mm above a monolayer of RAW 264.7 cells,either with or without ^(LpS).The surfaces of both materials showed acute(24 h)changes when incubated in the proinflammatory RAW 264.7^(LpS) *** discs incubated with RAW 264.7^(LpS) macrophages showed greater corrosion pitting,while AZ61 showed morphological and elemental bulk product changes via scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDX).X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XpS)analysis showed a reduction in the Ca/p ratio of the surface products for AZ61 disc incubated with RAW 264.7^(LpS),but not the Mg ***,RAW 264.7^(LpS) macrophages were found to be more viable in the acute biodegradative environment generated by Mg materials,as demonstrated by calcein-AM and cleaved(active)caspase-3 staining(CC3).^(LpS) stimulation caused an increase in ROS-RNS,and a decrease in antioxidant peroxidase *** and AZ61 were found to change this ROS-RNS balance,independently of physiological antioxidant *** findings highlight the complexity of the cellular driven acute inflammatory responses to different biodegradable Mg,and how it can potentially affect performance of these materials.

Driven by considerations of sustainability, it has become increasingly difficult over the past 15-20 years -- at least intellectually -- to separate out the water infrastructure and water metabolism of cities from their intimately inter-related nutrient and energy metabolisms. Much of the focus of this difficulty settles on the wastewater component of the city＇s water infrastructure and its associated fluxes of nutrients （N, p, C, and so on）. Indeed, notwithstanding the massive volumes of these materials flowing into and out of the city, the notion of an urban nutrient infrastructure is conspicuous by its absence. Likewise, we do not tend to discuss, or conduct research into, ＂soilshed＂ agencies, or soilshed management, or Integrated Nutrient Resources Management （as opposed to its most familiar companion, Integrated Water Resources Management, or IWRM）. The paper summarizes some of the benefits （and challenges） deriving from adopting this broader, multi-sectoral ＂systems＂ perspective on addres- sing water-nutrient-energy systems in city-watershed settings. Such a perspective resonates with the growing interest in broader policy circles in what is called the ＂water-food-energy security nexus＂. The benefits and challenges of our Multi-sectoral Systems Analysis （MSA） are illustrated through computational results from two primary case studies： Atlanta, Georgia, USA; and London, UK. Since our work is part of the International Network on Cities as Forces for Good in the Environment （CFG; see ***）, in which other case studies are currently being initiated -- for example, on Kath- mandu, Nepal we close by reflecting upon these issues of water-nutrient-energy systems in three urban settings with quite different styles and speeds of development.

Correlation between Microstructures and Yield Strength of a High Strength Enameling Steel

Numerical estimates of the components of yield strength of a high strength Fe-C-Mn-p-N-Si enameling steel were determined using empirical relationships between microstructure and yield strength. Results are reported for both the hot rolled （HR） and cold rolled （CR） forms before and after simulating an enamel-fire anneal （EFA）. To determine the solubilities of alloying elements, thermodynamic calculations were performed in combination with the considerations of process conditions and the element diffusivities. The results show that the main solid solution strengtheners were the elements Mn, Si, and p, while the elements C and N were nearly completely tied up as precipitates. The yield strength reduction, due to the EFA, resulted primarily from an increase in grain size and a decrease in dislocation density, and the EFA appeared to have a negligible effect on the element solubilities.

Bioreduction of vanadium(V) in groundwater by autohydrogentrophic bacteria:Mechanisms and microorganisms

As one of the transition metals, vanadium（V）（V（V）） in trace amounts represents an essential element for normal cell growth, but becomes toxic when its concentration is above 1 mg/L. V（V） can alter cellular differentiation, gene expression, and other biochemical and metabolic phenomena. A feasible method to detoxify V（V） is to reduce it to V（IV）, which precipitates and can be readily removed from the water. The bioreduction of V（V） in a contaminated groundwater was investigated using autohydrogentrophic bacteria and hydrogen gas as the electron donor. Compared with the previous organic donors,H2 shows the advantages as an ideal electron donor, including nontoxicity and less production of excess biomass. V（V） was 95.5% removed by biochemical reduction when autohydrogentrophic bacteria and hydrogen were both present, and the reduced V（IV）precipitated, leading to total-V removal. Reduction kinetics could be described by a first-order model and were sensitive to p H and temperature, with the optimum ranges of p H 7.5–8.0 and 35–40°C, respectively. phylogenetic analysis by clone library showed that the dominant species in the experiments with V（V） bioreduction belonged to theβ-proteobacteria. previously known V（V）-reducing species were absent, suggesting that V（V）reduction was carried out by novel species. Their selective enrichment during V（V）bioreduction suggests that Rhodocyclus, a denitrifying bacterium, and Clostridium, a fermenter known to carry out metal reduction, were responsible for V（V） bioreduction.

Various complications have been related to laparoscopic cholecystectomy but most occur shortly after the procedure. In this report, we present a case with very late complications in which an abscess developed within the gallbladder fossa 6 years after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The abscess resolved after treatment with CT-guided extrahepatic aspiration. However, 4 years later, an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography （ERCp） performed for choledocholithiasis demonstrated a “gallbladder” which communicated with the common bile duct via a patent cystic duct. This unique case indicates that a cystic duct stump may communicate with the gallbladder fossa many years following cholecystectomy.

Background： This experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that vitamin E（Vit E） and acetylsalicylic acid（ASA）, a cyclooxygenase-2（COX-2） inhibitor, will additively reduce the production of the immunosuppressive molecule prostaglandin E_2（pGE_2） and hence reduce inflammatory responses in weaner pigs experimentally infected with an enterotoxigenic strain of E. ***： The experiment was conducted in a research facility with 192 individually-housed male weaner pigs（Landrace × Large White） weighing 6.6 ± 0.04 kg（mean ± SEM）. The pigs were experimentally infected with an enterotoxigenic strain of E. coli and were allocated to a 2 × 3 factorial design with the respective factors being without and with 125 ppm ASA and three levels of Vit E supplementation（50, 100 or 200 IU/kg diet, dl-α-tocopheryl acetate）.Results： Acetylsalicylic acid supplementation improved average daily gain（p 〈 0.05） and tended to improve feed：gain ratio（p 〈 0.10） during the first 14 d after weaning. Acetylsalicylic acid supplementation also improved（p 〈 0.001） amino acid utilization efficiency（as assessed by plasma urea level） and tended to decrease（p 〈 0.10） pGE2 production in the liver without affecting smal intestinal histology and tight junction protein mR NA expression in the jejunal epithelium. Vitamin E supplementation greater than 100 IU/kg diet sustained both the plasma Vit E concentration（p 〈 0.001） and plasma haptoglobin content（p 〈 0.001） after weaning. However, there was no additive effects of the combined supplementation of ASA and Vit E on performance, intestinal barrier function and inflammatory responses of weaned ***： Although ASA and vitamin E improved amino acid utilization efficiency and reduced acute inflammatory responses, ASA and vitamin E did not additively reduce production of pGE2 and inflammatory responses in weaner pigs experimental y infected with an enterotoxigenic strain of E. coli.
