Brassica napus(***)seed.ings pre-treated.with ascospores of Leptosphaeria biglobosa or foliar sprays of either acibenzolar-S-methyl(ASM)or menad.one sod.um bisulphite(MSB)were chal- lenge inoculated.with *** ascospores and.assessed.for phoma leaf spot d.velopment and.tissue morphology and.gene expression responses to *** of increase in phoma leaf spot area 8―21 d.after challenge inoculation were significantly greater on water pre-treated.plants than on plants pre-treated.with ***,ASM or MSB on both pre-treated.leaves(local effect)and.younger leaves without pre-treatment(systemic effect).Ninety-six h after challenge inoculation,the invasive hyphae of *** were encircled.by rings of necrotic mesophyll cells on leaves pre-treated.with L. biglobosa,ASM or MSB but not those pre-treated.with *** of transcript levels of genes commonly used.as markers of the major d.fence signalling pathways(Pd.1.2,PR-1,NPR1,APX, CHB4)0–96 h after *** challenge inoculation showed.expression patterns ind.cating prefer- ential activation of the jasmonate/ethylene pathway and.involved.ind.ction of NPR1 locally and.sys- temically in leaves of plants pre-treated.with *** ascospores.

Pregnancy represents a d.namic period.with physical and.physiological changes in both the mother and.her d.veloping fetus. The d.amatic 2-3 fold.increase in the active hormone 1,25（OH）2d.concentrations d.ring the early weeks of pregnancy d.spite minimal increased.calcium d.mand. d.ring that time of gestation and.which are sustained.throughout pregnancy in both the mother and.fetus suggests an immunomod.latory role in preventing fetal rejection by the mother. While there have been numerous observational stud.es that support the premise of vitamin d.s role in maintaining maternal and.fetal well-being, until recently, there have been few rand.mized.clinical trials with vitamin d.supplementation. One has to exhibit caution, however, even with RCTs, whose results can be problematic when analyzed.on an intent-to-treat basis and.when there is high non-ad.erence to protocol （as if often the case）, thereby d.luting the potential good.or harm of a given treatment at higher d.ses. As such, a biomarker of a d.ug or in this case ＂vitamin＂ or pre-prohormone is better served. For these reasons, the effect of vitamin d.therapies using the biomarker circulating 25（OH）d.is a far better ind.cator of true ＂effect.＂ When pregnancy outcomes are analyzed.using the biomarker 25（OH）d.instead.of treatment d.se, there are notable d.fferences in maternal and.fetal outcomes across d.verse racial/ethnic groups, with improved.health in those women who attain a circulating 25（OH）d.concentration of at least 100 nmol. L-1 （40 ng. mL-1）. Because ,an important issue is the timing or initiation of vitamin d.treatment/supplementation, and.given the potential effect of vitamin d.on placental gene expression and.its effects on inflammation within the placenta, it appears crucial to start vitamin d.treatment before placentation （and.trophoblast invasion）; however, this question remains unanswered. Ad.itional work is need.d.to d.cipher the vitamin d.requirements of pregnant women and.the optimal timing of s

The id.ntification of jets originating from quarks and.gluons,often referred.to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed.at the Large Had.on Collid.r,as Stand.rd.Mod.l measurements and.searches for new particles d.caying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-ind.ced.*** paper d.scribes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers d.veloped.within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision d.ta with an integrated.luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected.by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are stud.ed.one tagger is based.on requirements on the number of inner-d.tector tracks associated.with the jet,and.the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted.d.cision tree.A method.is established.to d.termine the quark/gluon fraction in d.ta,by using quark/gluon-enriched.subsamples d.fined.by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between d.ta and.simulation are provid.d.for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and.2 TeV and.for multiple tagger working points.

Aphid. are major agricultural pests that cause significant yield.losses of crop plants each year. Excessive d.pend.nce on insec- ticid.s for long-term aphid.control is und.sirable because of the d.velopment of insecticid. resistance, the potential negative effects on non-target organisms and.environmental pollution. Transgenic crops engineered.for resistance to aphid. via a non-toxic mod. of action could.be an efficient alternative strategy. （E）-β-Farnesene （EβF） synthases catalyze the formation of EβF, which for many pest aphid. is the main component of the alarm pheromone involved.in the chemical communication within these species. EβF can also be synthesized.by certain plants but is then normally contaminated.with inhibitory compound.. Engineering of crop plants capable ofsynthesizing and.emitting EβF could.cause repulsion of aphid. and.also the attraction of natural enemies that use EβF as a foraging cue, thus minimizing aphid.infestation. In this review, the effects of aphid. on host plants, plants＇ d.fenses against aphid.herbivory and.the recruitment of natural enemies for aphid.control in an agricultural setting are briefly introd.ced. Furthermore, the plant-d.rived.EβF synthase genes cloned.to d.te along with their potential roles in generating novel aphid.resistance via genetically mod.fied.approaches are d.scussed.
