Backgro.nd： Sheep is impo.tant in the so.io.eco.o.ic lives o. peo.le aro.nd the wo.ld. It is estimated that mo.e than half o. o.r o.ce co.mo. livesto.k breeds are no. endangered. Since genetic characterizatio. o. Nigerian sheep is still lacking, we analyzed ten mo.pho.o.ical traits o. 402 animals and 15 micro.atellite DNA markers in 384 animals o. the 4 Nigerian sheep breeds to.better understand genetic diversity fo. breeding management and germplasm co.servatio.. Results： Mo.pho.o.ical traits o. Uda and Balami were significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher than Yankasa, which were bo.h higher than West African Dwarf （WAD） sheep. Stepwise discriminant analysis sho.ed tail length, rump height, chest girth, ear length and chest depth as the mo.t discriminating variables fo. classificatio.. Mahalano.is distances sho. the least differentiatio. between Uda and Balami and the largest between WAD and Balami sheep. While 93.3% o. WAD sheep were co.rectly assigned to.their so.rce genetic gro.p, 63.9% o. Yankasa, 61.2% o. Balami and 45.2% o. Uda were classified co.rectly by nearest neighbo.r discriminant analysis. The o.erall high Po.ymo.phism Info.matio. Co.tent （PIC） o. all micro.atellite markers ranged fro. 0.751 to.0.927 suppo.ting their use in genetic characterizatio.. Expected hetero.ygo.ity was high fo. all lo.i （0.783 to.0.93）. Mean hetero.ygo.e deficiency acro.s all po.ulatio.s （0.17] to.0.534） po.sibly indicate significant inbreeding （P 〈 0.05）. Mean values fo. FST, FIT and F^s statistics acro.s all lo.i were 0.088, 0.394 and 0.336 respectively. Yankasa and Balami are the mo.t clo.ely related breeds （DA = 0.184） while WAD and Balami are the farthest apart breeds （DA-- 0.665）, which is co.ncident with distance based o. mo.pho.o.ical analysis and po.ulatio. structure assessed by STRUCTURE. In the sequence o. a 648 bp fragment representing intro. 1, exo. 2, and part o. intro. 2 o. the MLPH mammalian pigmentatio. gene, we identified a no.el g.469C> G mutatio. in intro. 2, and geno.yped it in 266 Nigerian go.ts using PCR-RFLP analysis. The C allele had frequencies o. 0.9625, 0.9804 and 0.97405 in West African Dwarf (WAD),Sahel(SH) and Red So.o.o.(RS) breeds, respectively. The G allele was the highest in WAD (0.0375), fo.lo.ed by RS (0.02595), and then SH (0.0196). o.erall lo. FIS and FST and high Nm values demo.strate little differentiatio. within and amo.g the go.t breeds at this intro.ic lo.us. Large amo.nt o. pre-plant nitro.en （N） fertilizer results in lo. N use efficiency due to.po.r synchro.y between so.l N supply and maize N demand, especially during N sensitive gro.th stages. The o.jectives o. the study were to.co.pare gro.th and yield o. maize （Zea rnays L.） under co.ventio.al and site-specific N management in a dryland farming system. The study, which was designed as rando.ized co.plete blo.k design was co.ducted o.er three site-years under co.tinuo.s maize cro.ping system in the semi-arid regio.s o. the Limpo.o.Pro.ince in So.th Africa. Treatments o. the study co.sisted o. three N management strategies o. a maize field planted to.dro.ght resistant SNK 2147 hybrid maize cultivar. Treatments were：（i） no.N applicatio. （No., （ii） site-specific N at variable rates ranging between 18 kg N/ha and 33 kg N/ha based o. so.l analysis results （N l） and （iii） co.ventio.al and unifo.m N applicatio. bro.dcasted during planting at 58 kg N/ha （N2）. Sufficiency index as indicatio. o. N deficiency was determined using CCM-200 o. maize leaves based o. leaf numbers during maize vegetative gro.th stages V6, V10 and Vl4, and thereafter N was applied o.ly when needed. The highest maize grain yield o. 5.2 Mg/ha fo. N 1 was significantly higher （P 〈 0.05） than 3.2 Mg/ha and 4.0 Mg/ha o. N0 and N2 in site-year I, respectively. Maize grain yield o. 2.2 Mg/ha （Nl） at site-year ll was significantly higher （P _〈 0.05） than 1.7 Mg/ha o. the No. The maize gro.th and yield under N2 and N1 was co.pared, N1 required between 43% and 69% lesser N fertilizer as co.pared to.N2 o.er site-years, and resulted in higher maize height, number o. leaves per plant, leaf length, and leaf area than that o. co.ventio.al N management strategy. Flo.ding is a majo. pro.lem facing So.thern African regio.. The regio. has been experiencing flo.d fo. the past two.decades. This flo.d event has been exacerbated in recent years by glo.al weather pattern kno.n as La Ni?a which co.ls o.ean waters in the equato.ial Pacific and changes rainfall patterns acro.s the wo.ld. This change in weather pattern has resulted in increased rainfall o.er So.thern Africa causing flash flo.ds resulting in extensive so.io.co.o.ic lo.es, casualties and enviro.mental damage. This study emplo.s remo.e sensing and geo.raphical info.matio. systems (GIS) data to.visualize the impact o. climate change caused by flo.ding in the So.thern African regio. in o.der to.assist decisio. makers’ plans fo. future o.currences. To.achieve these o.jectives, the study used Digital Elevatio. Mo.el (DEM), tempo.al Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Mo.erate Reso.utio. Imaging Spectro.adio.eter (Mo.IS) satellites data o.tained fro. the United States Geo.o.ical Survey (USGS) and NASA’s Earth o.servato.y websites in o.der to.sho. the spatial dimensio.s o. the damage and the flo.ded area. Results o. the study revealed no.able damages to.so.ial and natural enviro.ments as well as flo.d risk zo.es and waterco.rses in the study area. The paper co.cludes by o.tlining po.icy reco.mendatio.s in the fo.m o. the need fo. building drainage ditches o. the flat plains identified in this study to.acco.mo.ate flo.d flo.s, the design o. a co.prehensive Regio.al Emergency Info.matio. This study emplo.s Landsat-8 o.eratio.al Land Imager (o.I) thermal infrared satellite data to.co.pare land surface temperature o. two.cities in Ghana: Accra and Kumasi. These cities have human po.ulatio.s abo.e 2 millio. and the co.respo.ding anthro.o.enic impact o. their enviro.ments significantly. Images were acquired with minimum clo.d co.er (o. bo.h dry and rainy seaso.s between December to.August. Image prepro.essing and rectificatio. using ArcGIS 10.8 so.tware were used. The shapefiles of Accra and Kumasi were used to extract from the full scenes to subset the study area. Thermal band data numbers were converted to Top of Atmospheric Spectral Radiance using radiance rescaling factors. To determine the density of green on a patch of land, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was calculated by using red and near-infrared bands i.e. Band 4 and Band 5. Land surface emissivity (LSE) was also calculated to determine the efficiency of transmitting thermal energy across the surface into the atmosphere. Results of the study show variation of temperatures between different locations in two urban areas. The study found Accra to have experienced higher and lower dry season and wet season temperatures, respectively.
