Oral Herbal Medicines for Psoriasis:A Review of Clinical Studies

Various forms of complementary and alternative medicine are used in *** these,herbal medicines are frequently used as systemic and/or topical interventions either as a replacement for or in conjunction with conventional *** benefit of such use is *** review is to provide an up-to-date review and discussion of the clinical evidence for the main kinds of herbal therapies for *** of the biomedical databases PubMed（including MEDlINE）, EMBASE and CINAHl were conducted in December 2011 which identified 32 clinical studies,all published in *** of these primarily tested topical herbal medicines and were thus *** 12 studies that evaluated systemic use of herbal medicines were included in the *** were case series studies and the other 8 were controlled *** terms of interventions,4 studies tested the systemic use of plant oils combined with marine oils and 8 studies tested multi-ingredient herbal *** clinical evidence for plant and animal derived fatty acids is inconclusive and any benefit appears to be *** the multi-herb formulations,benefits of oral herbal medicines were shown in several studies,however,a number of these studies are not controlled trials,a diversity of interventions are tested and there are methodological issues in the controlled *** conclusion,there is promising evidence in a number of the studies of multi-herb ***,well-designed,adequately powered studies with proper control interventions are needed to further determine the benefits of these *** addition,syndrome differentiation should be incorporated into trial design to ensure effective translation of findings from these studies into Chinese medicine clinical practice.

Ocean waves propagating over a porous seabed: Residual and oscillatory mechanisms

Two mechanisms for the wave-induced pore pressures in a porous seabed, i.e. oscillatory and residual excess pore pressures, have been observed in laboratory experiments and field measurements. Most previous investigations have focused on one of the mechanisms individually. In this paper, an analytical solution for the wave-induced residual pore pressure, which is not available yet, is derived, and compared with the existing experimental data. With the new solution, a parametric analysis is performed to clarify the applicable ranges of two mechanisms. Then, a simplified approximation for the prediction of wave-induced liquefaction potential is proposed for engineering practice.

The addition of surface acoustic wave(SAW)technologies to microfluidics has greatly advanced lab-on-a-chip applications due to their unique and powerful attributes,including high-precision manipulation,versatility,integrability,biocompatibility,contactless nature,and rapid ***,the development of SAW microfluidic devices is limited by complex and time-consuming micro/nanofabrication techniques and access to cleanroom facilities for multistep photolithography and vacuum-based *** simplify the fabrication of SAW microfluidic devices with customizable dimensions and functions,we utilized the additive manufacturing technique of aerosol jet *** successfully fabricated customized SAW microfluidic devices of varying materials,including silver nanowires,graphene,and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate(PEDOT:PSS).To characterize and compare the acoustic actuation performance of these aerosol jet printed SAW microfluidic devices with their cleanroom-fabricated counterparts,the wave displacements and resonant frequencies of the different fabricated devices were directly measured through scanning laser Doppler ***,to exhibit the capability of the aerosol jet printed devices for lab-on-a-chip applications,we successfully conducted acoustic streaming and particle concentration ***,we demonstrated a novel solution-based,direct-write,single-step,cleanroom-free additive manufacturing technique to rapidly develop SAW microfluidic devices that shows viability for applications in the fields of biology,chemistry,engineering,and medicine.

Background:The effect of transjugular intra-hepatic portosystemic shunt(TIPS)placement on renal function and the correlation of post-TIPS Cr with mortality remain *** study aimed to assess the effect of TIPS placement on renal function and to examine the relationship between post-TIPS Cr and mortality ***:A total of 593 patients who underwent de novo TIPS placement between 2004 and 2017 at a single institution were included in the *** pre-TIPS Cr level(T0;within 7 days before TIPS placement)and post-TIPS Cr levels,at 1–2 days(T1),5–12 days(T2),and 15–40 days(T3),were *** of Cr change after TIPS placement and the 1-year mortality rate were analysed using multivariable linear-regression and Cox proportional-hazards models,***:Overall,21.4%of patients(n=127)had elevated baseline Cr(≤1.5 mg/dl;mean,2.5161.49 mg/dl)and 78.6%(n=466)had normal baseline Cr(l;mean,0.9260.26 mg/dl).Patients with elevated pre-TIPS Cr demonstrated a decrease in post-TIPS Cr(difference,-0.60 mg/dl),whereas patients with normal baseline Cr exhibited no change(difference,l).The 30-day,90-day,and 1-year mortality rates were 13%,20%,and 32%,*** bleeding as a TIPS-placement indication(hazard ratio=1.731;P=0.036),higher T0 Cr(hazard ratio=1.834;P=0.012),and higher T3 Cr(hazard ratio=3.524;Plity ***:TIPS placement improved renal function in patients with baseline renal dysfunction and the post-TIPS Cr level was a strong predictor of 1-year mortality risk.

Aims:The long-term effects of changing fire regimes on the herbaceous component of savannas are poorly understood but essential for understanding savanna *** present results from one of the longest running(>44 years)fire experiments in savannas,the experimental burn plots(EBPs),which is located in the Kruger National Park(South Africa)and encompasses four major savanna vegetation types that span broad spatial gradients of rainfall(450–700 mm)and soil ***:Herbaceous vegetation was sampled twice in the EBPs using a modified step-point method,once prior to initiation of the experiment(1954)and again after 44–47 *** combinations of three fire frequency(1-,2-and 3-year return intervals)and five season(before the first spring rains,after the first spring rains,mid-summer,late summer and autumn)treatments,as well as a fire exclusion treatment,were applied at the plot level(;7 ha each),with each treatment(n=12 total)replicated four times at each of the four sites(n=192 plots total).The effects of long-term alterations to the fire regime on grass community structure and composition were analyzed separately for each *** Findings:Over the 44+years duration of the experiment,fires were consistently more intense on sites with higher mean annual rainfall(>570 mm),whereas fires were not as intense or consistent for sites with lower and more variable rainfall(lly higher herbivory due to greater soil *** the plots were open to grazing,the impacts of herbivory along with more variable rainfall regimes likely minimized the effects of fire for the more arid *** a consequence,fire effects on grass community structure and composition were most marked for the higher rainfall sites and generally not significant for the more arid *** the high-rainfall sites,frequent dry season fires(1-to 3-year return intervals)resulted in high grass richness,evenness and diversity,whereas fire exclusion and growing se

Kisspeptin （Kp） is synthesized in the arcuate nucleus and preoptic area of the hypothalamus and is a regulator of gonadotropin releasing hormone in the hypothalamus. In addition, Kp may regulate additional functions such as increased neuropeptide Y gene expression and reduced proopiomelanocortin （POMC） gene expression in sheep. Other studies have found a role for Kp to release growth hormone （GH）, prolactin and luteinizing hormone （lH） from cattle, rat and monkey pituitary cells. Intravenous injection of Kp stimulated release lH, GH, prolactin and follicle stimulating hormone in some experiments in cattle and sheep, but other studies have failed to find an effect of peripheral injection of Kp on GH release. Recent studies indicate that Kp can stimulate GH release after intracerebroventricular injection in sheep at doses that do not release GH after intravenous injection. These studies suggest that Kp may have a role in regulation of both reproduction and metabolism in sheep. Since GH plays a role in luteal development, it is tempting to speculate that the ability of Kp to release GH and lH is related to normal control of reproduction.

Harpephyllum caffrum stimulates glucose uptake,abates redox imbalance and modulates purinergic and glucogenic enzyme activities in oxidative hepatic injury

Bile acids(BAs) are amphipathic molecules important for metabolism of cholesterol,absorption of lipids and lipid soluble vitamins,bile flow,and regulation of gut *** are over 30 different BA species known to exist in humans and mice,which are endogenous modulators of at least 6 different membrane or nuclear *** diversity of ligands and receptors play important roles in health and disease;however,the full functions of each individual BA in vivo remain *** generated a mouse model lacking the initiating enzymes,CYP7 A1 and CYP27 A1,in the two main pathways of BA *** females are more susceptible to BA related diseases,such as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy,we expanded this model into female *** null mice of Cyp7 a1 and Cyp27 a1 were crossbred to create double knockout(DKO) *** concentrations in female DKO mice had reductions in serum(63%),liver(83%),gallbladder(94%),and small intestine(85%),as compared to WT *** low BA levels,DKO mice had a similar expression pattern to that of WT mice for genes involved in BA regulation,synthesis,conjugation,and ***,through treatment with a synthetic FXR agonist,GW4064,female DKO mice responded to FXR activation similarly to WT mice.
