Insulin is a hormone secreted by pancreaticβ*** concentration of glucose in circulation is proportional to the secretion of insulin by these *** target cells,insulin binds to its receptors and activates phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase/protein kinase B,inducing different mechanisms depending on the cell *** the liver it activates the synthesis of glycogen,in adipose tissue and muscle it allows the capture of glucose,and in the hypothalamus,it regulates thermogenesis and *** in insulin function[insulin resistance(IR)]are related to the development of neurodegenerative diseases in obese ***,in obesity and diabetes,its role as an anorexigenic hormone in the hypothalamus is diminished during ***,hyperphagia prevails,which aggravates hyperglycemia and IR further,becoming a vicious circle in which the patient cannot regulate their need to *** calorie intake induces an increase in reactive oxygen species,overcoming cellular antioxidant defenses(oxidative stress).Reactive oxygen species activate stress-sensitive kinases,such as c-Jun Nterminal kinase and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase,that induce phosphorylation in serine residues in the insulin receptor,which blocks the insulin signaling pathway,continuing the mechanism of *** brain and pancreas are organs mainly affected by oxidative *** use of drugs that regulate food intake and improve glucose metabolism is the conventional therapy to improve the quality of life of these ***,the use of antioxidants that regulate oxidative stress has given good results because they reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory processes,and they also have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs.

The Safety of Cannabis Use in Pregnancy

Based on self-reported surveys conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, cannabis use in pregnant females has increased over the years. Despite the increasing trend, the relationship between cannabis use and fetal outcomes is not fully understood. This review paper evaluates the literature investigating the short-term and long-term fetal outcomes resulting from cannabis use during pregnancy. Additionally, the risk of chronic marijuana use leading to cannabis hyperemesis syndrome has been highlighted in this paper using conclusions compiled from several case studies. Several studies linked delayed mental growth and reduced cognitive function with prenatal cannabis use, but the literature was limited to lower-quality observational studies and could not establish causality. One systematic review investigated short-term outcomes of low birth rates and preterm deliveries, where marijuana use in conjunction with tobacco use was associated with more preterm deliveries. Another study found that six-year-old patients exposed to cannabis prenatally were more likely to score lower in different categories on the Stanford-Binet scale test, which measures intelligence. The exposure in the first, second, or third trimester was associated with lower composite or subcategory scores such as verbal reasoning or short-term memory. Despite these results, the studies evaluated had limitations. They could not establish a clear relationship between cannabis use and fetal outcomes, but the literature showed a similar pattern of health, social and economic inequities among the populations who self-reported cannabis and substance use and non-users. Effect of Nanostructures Addition and Enhancement of Poly (Vinylidene Difluoride) (PVDF) Energy Harvesting

With concerns in energy crisis and global warming, researchers are actively investigating alternative energy renewable solutions. Among the various methods, piezoelectric transduction stands out due to its impressive electromechanical coupling factor and coefficient. As a result, piezoelectric energy harvesting has garnered significant attention from the scientific community. In this study, we explored methods to enhance the piezoelectric properties of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) through two distinct approaches. The first approach involved applying external high voltages at various stages during the mixture reaction. The goal was to determine whether this voltage application could alter or enhance PVDF’s piezoelectric conformation by improving the alignment of polarized dipoles. In the second part of our study, we investigated the effects of incorporating various nanostructures (including Iron Oxide, Magnesium Oxide, and Zinc Oxide) into PVDF. To analyze changes in PVDF’s crystalline structure, we utilized Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Additionally, we measured the electric polarization of samples using a Precision LC Meter and examined the morphology of nanofibers through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

The objectives of the present survey were to study the production and the biochemical characterization of an enzymatic cold-active extract with polygalacturonase activity,to perform a first insight into its possible application in fruit-juice obtention process,and to use this juice for food products *** enzymatic extract was produced by the Antarctic yeast Mrakia *** January 7,2016 in a bioreactor with citric pectin as *** polygalacturonase activity showed optimum conditions for reaction at 45◦C and pH *** activity was stable until 40◦C but deactivated at higher *** by Hg+2 suggested the presence of a thiol-dependent enzyme.A high-molecular polygalacturonase was detected in an SDS-PAGE and zymography ***-products were observed by thin-layer chromatography and suggested the endo-mode of *** enzymatic extract had some accessory enzymes,such as pectin methylesterase,β-glucosidase,cellulase and *** a first insight into the potential use of this enzymatic extract for fruit maceration at mild temperatures,red and white dragon fruits were selected as *** 23◦C,juice yields of 15%-23%higher than control were obtained after treatments,with a decrease of remanent solid of 25%-35%.The color of red dragon fruit juice increased with enzymatic *** balls that were prepared with the juices demonstrated a hardness of~10 *** compression force of low-calorie sugar gels was 3.8 *** work provided a complete study of the production,characterization,application and food product production using a new cold-active polygalacturonase extract of Antarctic origin.

In this work,we report long-term trends in the abundance and breeding performance of Adélie penguins(Pygoscelis adeliae)nesting in three Antarctic colonies(i.e.,at Martin Point,South Orkneys Islands;Stranger Point/Cabo Funes,South Shetland Islands;and Esperanza/Hope Bay in the Antarctic Peninsula)from 1995/96 to 2022/*** yearly count data of breeding groups selected,we observed a decline in the number of breeding pairs and chicks in crèche at all colonies ***,the magnitude of change was higher at Stranger Point than that in the remaining ***,the index of breeding success,which was calculated as the ratio of chicks in crèche to breeding pairs,exhibited no apparent trend throughout the study ***,it displayed greater variability at Martin Point compared to the other two colonies under *** the number of chicks in crèche of Adélie penguins showed a declining pattern,the average breeding performance was similar to that reported in gentoo penguin colonies,specifically,those undergoing a population increase(even in sympatric colonies facing similar local conditions).Consequently,it is plausible to assume a reduction of the over-winter survival as a likely cause of the declining trend observed,at least in the Stranger Point and Esperanza ***,we cannot rule out local effects during the breeding season affecting the Adélie population of Martin Point.

本文利用颗粒细胞的体外培养方法研究了 Interleukin-1β 对 FSH 诱导颗粒细胞雌激素生成的影响。颗粒细胞得自未成熟的、经雌激素处理的大鼠,加入 FSH 及同时加入不同浓度的 Interleukin-1β 后,体外培养三日,观察 Interleukin-1β 对雌激素生成的影响。结果可见 FSH 刺激颗粒细胞雌激素生成作用随 FSH 剂量的增加而随之增加。Interleukin-1β 单独处理并不影响雌激素的生物合成。但若同时应用 Interleukin-1β 和 FSH 处理,则可见 Inter-eukin-1β 抑制 FSH 诱导颗粒细胞雌激素生成作用,且此抑制作用强度呈剂量依赖性。其最大的抑制作用达83%。该抑制作用在加药处理后48h 即很明显。Interleukin-1β 抑制 fors-kolin 和(Bu)_2 cAMP 引起的雌激素的生成,这表明 Interleukin-1β 的作用点在 cAMP 生成之后。本文结果提示 Interleukin-1β 使颗粒细胞雌激素生成下降的作用有可能参予卵泡的闭锁机制,尤其当机体在遭受炎症、感染期间,Interleukin-1β 是卵巢功能受损的一个可能参予因子。

Conductive Behavior and Morphology of Axially Modified Gallium Phthalocyanine Thin Films onto Indium Tin Oxide Substrates

Semiconductor molecular films based on a gallium phthalocyanine chloride (GaPcCl) and a bidentate amine were prepared by using vacuum thermal evaporation and electrochemical techniques in order to investigate the preferred conduction paths within the films. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) were employed to characterize the morphology of the films. The conductivity measurements were performed with two different methods in order to investigate preferential conduction directions. The film transverse conductivity was obtained by using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and the in-plane film conductivity was measured with a four-point probe system. From spectroscopy measurements, the tunneling conductance (dI/dV) was also obtained. From these results, it was found that the conductive nature of the films was strongly influenced by the deposition technique which in turn defined the morphological characteristics of the film. The evaporated method showed better conductivity response and provided semiconductor characteristics in the film transverse direction with an in-plane ohmic response. Finally, contact angle measurements were performed and showed hydrophobic characteristics in all cases.

Loggerhead Sea Turtles Hand-Reared in Captivity: Isotopic Insights into Their Inherent Dietary Variation

Stable isotope analysis is a widely used method for gathering ecological insights into the diet and feeding habitats of various species. While captive studies often limit lethal sampling and differ from wild conditions, they offer valuable insights into inherent isotopic variations among individuals, which are often assumed to reflect differences between natural populations. In the Sea Turtle Conservation Program, loggerhead turtle hatchlings from different nests were fed. Necropsies were conducted on turtles that died during this period, obtaining bone fragments for analysis. We evaluated the isotopic variation of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in bone tissue across six turtle nests (n = 66 samples) and assessed differences in Straight Carapace Length (SCL, n = 71 samples). Using SIBER and nicheROVER in R, we calculated niche width and overlap, while the simmr package determined primary prey assimilation. Despite feeding the hatchlings the same prey, we observed variations in nitrogen isotope assimilation between nests. Nests 4 and 6 had a niche width >1.8‰, indicating consistent consumption frequencies across all prey and >70% niche overlap with other nests. In contrast, nests 1 and 2 showed a narrower niche width (Mugil sp. constituted the primary diet component (>40%) across all groups. This study demonstrates how factors like competition or prey preference can influence the assimilation of diet, even when the source remains constant (inherent variation).

Background: Brain metastases from papillary thyroid carcinoma are infrequent occurring in 0.15% to 1.3% of patients, and they are generally accompanied by synchronous metastases in other sites and in isolation are even less frequent;the information about their management is limited and it has been based mainly on retrospective studies, experiences, case reports, and management guidelines of brain metastasis of other cancers. Aim: We report this case with the objective of describing how unpredictable the behavior of thyroid cancer can be despite being classified as low risk of recurrence. Case Presentation: A female patient with a diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma classified as low risk who after more than a year of surveillance and without alterations in laboratory and imaging studies, developed a single brain metastasis susceptible to treatment with radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy. Conclusion: This case emphasizes the importance of a close follow-up of patients and not to minimize any symptom, no matter how simple it may seem, since cancer has no rules in its evolution.
