Incidence of hepatocellular ca.c.noma in outpatients with cirrhosis in Brazil: A 10-year retrospective cohort study

AIM To determine the incidence of hepatocellular ca.c.noma(Hcc) and the impact of Hcc surveilla.c. on early diagnosis and survival of cirrhotic outpatients. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, cirrhotic outpatients undergoing Hcc surveilla.c. between Ma.c. 2005 and Ma.c. 2014 were analyzed. Exclusion criteria were HIV coinfection; previous organ transplantation; diagnosis of Hcc at first consultation; missing data in the medical chart; and less than 1 year of follow-up. Surveilla.c. was carried out every six months using ultrasound and serum alpha-fetoprotein determination. Ten-year cumulative incidence and survival were estimated through Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS Four hundred and fifty-three patients were enrolled, of which 57.6% were male. Mean age was 55 years. Hepatitis c virus and heavy use of a.c.hol were the main etiologic agents of cirrhosis. Hcc was diagnosed in 75 patients(16.6%), with an estimated cumulative incidence of 2.6% in the 1st year, 15.4% in the 5th year, and 28.8% in the 10 th year. Median survival was estimated at 17.6 mo in Hcc patients compared to 234 mo in non-Hcc patients(P cc was more often detected in patients who underwent surveilla.c. every 6 mo or less(P = 0.05). However, survival was not different between patients with early stage vs non-early stage tumors [HR = 0.54(0.15-1.89), P = 0.33].cONcLUSION Hcc is a frequent complication in patients with cirrhosis and adherence to surveilla.c. programs favors early diagnosis.

To reduce the burden of denture stomatitis and oral candidiasis,an aqueous solution containing polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride(PHMGH)was investigated as an antifungal disinfectant against the leading cause of these oral conditions,candida *** solutions formulated with concentrations ranging from 0.125 to 0.50 wt%enabled increasing disinfection at the initial 5min-contact with 72h-mature candida biofilms formed on denture liner *** 10 min-contact,the solution at lower concentration has reached total fungal *** results also indicated that the denture liners preserved their mechanical property after the maximum contact time with the solution at the highest tested *** PHMGH aqueous solutions at 0.125 wt%could be applied to promote interim denture liner disinfection without promoting the loss of materials’mechanical property.

Gamma uranium-molybdenum alloys have been considered as the fuel phase in plate type fuel elements for material and test reactors (MTR), due to their a.c.ptable performa.c. under irradiation. Regarding their usage as a dispersion phase in aluminum matrix, it is necessary to convert the as cast structure into powder, and one of the techniques considered for this purpose is the hydration-dehydration (HDH). This paper shows that, under specific conditions of heating and cooling, γ-UMo fragmentation occurs in a non-reactive predominant mechanism, as shown by the curves of hydrogen absorption/desorption as a function of time and temperature. Our focus was on the experimental results presented by the addition of 8% weight molybdenum. Following the production by induction melting, samples of the alloys were thermally treated under a.c.nstant flow of hydrogen for temperatures varying from 500°c to 600°c and for times of 0.5 to 4 h. It was observed that, even without a massive hydration-dehydration process, the alloys fragmented under specific conditions of thermal treatment during the thermal shock phase of the experiments. Also, it was observed that there was a relation between absorption and the rate of gamma decomposition or the gamma phase stability of the alloy.

Production of Lipase Using cassava Peel and Sunflower Oil in Solid-State Fermentation： Preliminary Study

Full use of residues from industrial processes is a fundamental necessity of contemporary society, since it avoids impacts to the environment by using residues as inputs for other products of high economic and social importa.c.. In this study, lipase production of the crude enzymatic extracts obtained by Aspergillus niger using cassava peel as substrate and sunflower oil as an inductor was investigated. The optimized cultivation temperature and concentration of inductor were determined using the response surface methodology. The two variables studied exercised influence in the production of lipase in the 95% level of confidence. The response surface obtained indicated that the conditions that maximize lipase activity production were 30.5 ~c and initial concentration of sunflower oil was 2.5% （w/w）. Through this analysis, it is evident that extremes in temperature and concentration of inductor tend to decrease lipase production, since low temperatures decrease metabolism and high temperatures may inactivate the lipase. Optimum lipase yield was 59.8 U/g of dry peel which was fermented for 60 h. Lipase production presents a peak of 61.3 U/g, at 72 h of fermentation. However, this value is statistically equal （p 〉 0.05） of the value of lipase activity obtained for 60 h and 84 h of fermentation.

Moringa oleifera Lam(Moringaceae) is a plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. Native to India, it is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its different parts are sources of proteins, vitamins and minerals and present different pharmacological and biotechnological potential. Moreover, M. oleifera seeds are widely used in water and effluent treatment, for their coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation properties, their ability of improving water quality, by reducing organic matter and microbial load, with special applicability in intensive animal production systems, such as aquaculture. In addition, due to its high nutritional value and several medicinal properties, this tree may act as a nutritional and medical alternative for socially neglected populations. In this context, this review gathers information on M. oleifera, emphasizing its chemical constituents, nutritional, pharmacological and antimicrobial properties, applications in the treatment of water effluents, and ecological and social aspects.

Stimulation of the P6 Acupuncture Point for Prophylaxis of Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnant Women Submitted to cesarean Section: A Blinded clinical Trial

In pregnant women subjected to spinal anesthesia for a.c.sarean section, episodes of nausea and vomiting are common both during and following surgery. Acupuncture for the prophylaxis and treatment of these complications has been gaining in popularity due to its low cost, simplicity, absence of side effects and confirmed efficacy. This study investigated the efficacy of stimulating the P6 acupoint in conjunction with the use of dexamethasone as prophylaxis for nausea and vomiting in pregnant women submitted to spinal anesthesia for a.c.sarean section. The patients (n = 100) were randomly distributed into two groups. In the first group (n = 50), a site located one centimeter laterally from P6 was stimulated. This is not a true acupuncture point (sham acupuncture). In the second group (n = 50), P6 was stimulated. In both groups, 4 mg of dexamethasone were administered intravenously. A questionnaire was used to obtain information on the occurrence of nausea and vomiting during surgery and in the first 12 hours postpartum. The chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test were used to assess differences between the groups. Age and physical status were similar in both groups. The incidence of nausea during surgery was 32% (n = 16) in the control group and 22% (n = 11) in the P6 group (p > 0.05). In the first 12 hours following surgery, nausea occurred in 16% of the women in the control group (n = 6) and in 4% in the P6 group (n = 4) (p = 0.045). The incidence of vomiting in the control group was 12% (n = 6) during surgery and 10% (n = 5) in the postoperative period compared to 8% (n = 4) and 4% (n = 2), respectively, in the P6 group (p > 0.05). Although these differences were not statistically significant with the exception of the incidence of nausea in the first 12 hours postpartum, a reduction occurred in the incidence of all the outcomes evaluated in the P6 group.

Alternative Methods for Preparation of Gluconate Salts Using Heterogeneous Non-Metal catalysts

Gluconate salts can be prepared using alternative non-metal catalysts based on methylene blue dye salt derivatives. Novel Methylene blue (MB) salts based on trifluoromethanesulfonate (TfO) and docusate (AOT) anions have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, nuclear magnetic resona.c. (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and UV-Visible spectra) in order to proof their chemical structure stability as well as final purity. [MB][TfO] showed a similar behavior of commercial available [MB]cl as homogenous catalyst for preparation of sodium gluconate. contrarily, [MB][AOT] as non-toxic, lower melting point and water-immiscible dye salt has been used as efficient and recycled heterogeneous catalyst for preparation of sodium gluconate in shorter reaction time, higher yields and purity grade. This alternative method can be extended to other relevant gluconate salts such as ca.c.um, barium, magnesium, potassium, lithium and several transition metals.

In the last decade, Brazil was the scene of two of the world’s biggest disasters related to mining tailings dams. The collapse of the Mariana and Brumadinho dams was catastrophic event that brought to light major environmental and humanitarian crises. Facts like this incite debate on the safety of dam construction methods and highlight the need for a broad discussion of dam safety legislation in the country. From the above, this paper promotes a review of various forms of construction of tailings dams and their associated problems, as well as discusses the techniques for soil reinforcement and their construction methods. The work also brings an overview of the Brazilian dams from April to July 2019, tracing the context of the Brazilian tailings dams months after the tragedy of Brumadinho. The methodology includes a robust literature review and discourse analysis. In Brazil, the number of ruptured dams is alarming, especially in the state of Minas Gerais, in which more than 7 have broken in the last two decades. Among the damages, the deaths impact society abruptly and were cataloged 455 deaths, of which 216 correspond to the rupture of the dam of the córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho. To evaluate and diagnose a dam, one should consider ordina.c. N ° 70,389, 2017 revoked by Resolution ANM n ° 95, of February 7, 2022. In this context, in Ma.c. 2019, we experienced several disturbing situations regarding dam instability in the state of Minas Gerais, being categorized as risky structures. To exemplify, one can cite dams classified as level 2 risk that became level 3. Due to the above facts, several studies are being conducted to improve soil aspects. For example, we highlight the increase in soil resista.c. that can be done using commercial and alternative materials available in the environment.
