Bioluminescent fungi from Peninsular Malaysia-a taxonomic and phylogenetic overview

Fifteen bioluminescent fungi recently collected from Peninsular Malaysia are analysed *** phylogeny of the Malaysian bioluminescent fungi and closely related taxa were evaluated with molecular data from the nuclear ribosomal large subunit(LsU),RNA polymerase 2 second largest subunit(RPB2)and internal transcribed spacers(ITs)gene *** sequences data support the circumscription of species based on the morphological species concept,but was unable to fully support the current sectional delimitation of genus *** the 15 taxa analysed here,four are novel species described herein,*** gombakensis,***,*** and Panellus luxfilamentus;while four taxa of Mycena *** were recently described as *** species(***)represents a new distribution record to Peninsular Malaysia,and six species(Neonothopanus nambi,Filoboletus manipularis,***,Roridomyces pruinosoviscidus,*** and ***)have been previously *** pruinosoviscidus is accepted as a new combination based on morphological and phylogenetic *** morphology data indicate its potential for taxon delimitation as axenic cultures of each species produced unique and distinguishable *** descriptions,illustrations and photographs are provided on basidiome and culture morphology.A key to aid in species identification,comparisons with allied species and data on basidiome and mycelium luminescence are also *** study gives the first report on mycelial luminescence for ***,***,*** as well as all new species described *** reports in this study bring the total known luminescent fungi worldwide to 81 species.

DEXA overestimates bone mineral density in adults with knee replacements

We examined bone mineral density(BMD)measurements made by dual-energy-xray-absorptiometry(DEXA)taken from 100 patients(♂46/♀54,66±6yr)who previously underwent single total-knee arthroplasty(TKA)to determine if automated software-based artifact detection(AsAD)adequately removes implant artifact from the DXA image before analysis and if potential inaccuracies could be overcome through manual artifact correction(MAC).We also sought to determine if software-based inaccuracies would result in fracture risk misclassification(Low-BMD/Osteopenia=Young-Adult T-scoreselect Results:When using AsAD,limbs with implants had higher BMD(+12.0±1.7%,ps resulting in a 2.5±0.2%overestimation of total-body BMD(single implant).Consequently,the prevalence of osteopenia in 95%of patients who would have been observed to have low leg BMD(18/19 patients)and 80%of those found to have low total-body BMD(4/5 patients)would have gone *** overestimation was eliminated when using *** results reveal a potential issue with AsAD for total-body DEXA scans in TKA patients and highlight the importance of careful review and MAC in those with joint replacements before making diagnostic decisions.

The increased global demand for plastic materials has led to severe plastic waste pollution,particularly to the marine *** critical issue affects both sea life and human beings since microplastics can enter the food chain and cause several health *** recycling,chemical treatments,incineration and landfill are apparently not the optimum solutions for reducing plastic ***,this review presents two newly identified environmentally friendly approaches,plastic biodegradation and bioplastic production using algae,to solve the increased global plastic ***,particularly microalgae,can degrade the plastic materials through the toxins systems or enzymes synthesized by microalgae itself while using the plastic polymers as carbon *** algae for plastic biodegradation has been critically reviewed in this paper to demonstrate the mechanism and how microplastics affect the *** the other hand,algae-derived bioplastics have identical properties and characteristics as petroleum-based plastics,while remarkably being biodegradable in *** review provides new insights into different methods of producing algae-based bioplastics(e.g.,blending with other materials and genetic engineering),followed by the discussion on the challenges and further research direction to increase their commercial feasibility.

Lightweight aluminum(Al)alloys have been widely used in frontier fields like aerospace and automotive industries,which attracts great interest in additive manufacturing(AM)to process high-value Al *** a mainstream AM technique,laser-directed energy deposition(LDED)shows good scalability to meet the requirements for large-format component manufacturing and ***,LDED Al alloys are highly challenging due to their inherent poor printability(*** laser absorption,high oxidation sensitivity and cracking tendency).To further promote the development of LDED high-performance Al alloys,this review offers a deep understanding of the challenges and strategies to improve printability in LDED Al *** porosity,cracking,distortion,inclusions,element evaporation and resultant inferior mechanical properties(worse than laser powder bed fusion)are the key challenges in LDED Al *** parameter optimizations,in-situ alloy design,reinforcing particle addition and field assistance are the efficient approaches to improving the printability and performance of LDED Al *** underlying correlations between processes,alloy innovation,characteristic microstructures,and achievable performances in LDED Al alloys are *** benchmark mechanical properties and primary strengthening mechanism of LDED Al alloys are *** review aims to provide a critical and in-depth evaluation of current progress in LDED Al *** opportunities and perspectives in LDED high-performance Al alloys are also outlined.

The therapeutic implications of immunosuppressive tumor aerobic glycolysis

In 2011,Hanahan and Weinberg added“Deregulating Cellular Energetics”and“Avoiding Immune Destruction”to the six previous hallmarks of *** this seminal paper,there has been a growing consensus that these new hallmarks are not mutually exclusive but rather *** following review summarizes how founding genetic events for tumorigenesis ultimately increase tumor cell glycolysis,which not only supports the metabolic demands of malignancy but also provides an immunoprotective niche,promoting malignant cell proliferation,maintenance and *** mechanisms by which altered metabolism contributes to immune impairment are multifactorial:(1)the metabolic demands of proliferating tumor cells and activated immune cells are similar,thus creating a situation where immune cells may be in competition for key nutrients;(2)the metabolic byproducts of aerobic glycolysis directly inhibit antitumor immunity while promoting a regulatory immune phenotype;and(3)the gene programs associated with the upregulation of glycolysis also result in the generation of immunosuppressive cytokines and *** this perspective,we shed light on important considerations for the development of new classes of agents targeting cancer *** types of therapies can impair tumor growth but also pose a significant risk of stifling antitumor immunity.

Glucosamine supplementation during late gestation alters placental development and increases litter size

Background： During late gestation the placental epithelial interface becomes highly folded, which involves changes in stromal hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is composed of glucoronate and N-acetyl-glucosamine. We hypothesized that supplementing gestating dams with glucosamine during this time would support placental folded-epithelial-bilayer development and increase litter size. In Exp. 1, gilts were unilaterally hysterectomizedovariectomized（UHO）. UHO gilts were mated and then supplemented daily with 10 g glucosamine（n = 16） or glucose（control, n = 17） from d 85 of gestation until slaughter（d 105）. At slaughter, the number of live fetuses was recorded and each live fetus and its placenta was weighed. Uterine wall samples adjacent to the largest and smallest fetuses within each litter were processed for histology. In Exp. 2, pregnant sows in a commercial sow farm were supplemented with either 10 g glucosamine or glucose daily from d 85 of gestation to farrowing. Total piglets born and born alive were recorded for each litter. In Exp. 3, the same commercial farm and same protocol were used except that the dose of glucosamine and glucose was doubled to 20 g/***： In Exp. 1, the number of live fetuses tended to be greater in glucosamine-treated UHO gilts（P = 0.098）.Placental morphometry indicated that the width of the folded bilayer was greater（P = 0.05） in glucosamine-treated gilts. In Exp. 2, litter size did not differ between glucosamine-and glucose-treated sows. However in Exp. 3, the increased dose of glucosamine resulted in a significant treatment by parity interaction（P ≤ 0.01）, in which total piglets born and born alive were greater in glucosamine treated sows of later parity（5 and 6）.Conclusions： These results indicated that glucosamine supplementation increased the width of the folds of the placental bilayer and increased litter size in later parity, intact pregnant commercial sows.

Physical activity engagement after breast cancer: Advancing the health of survivors

Background: Physical inactivity is identified as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality and associated with increased breast cancer diagnosis and risks of recurrence. Objectives: To investigate the level of physical activity engagement after breast cancer in survivors and healthy controls. Design: A descriptive casecontrol study on survivors and matched (ethnic, gender, age) healthy controls was surveyed using a pre-post questionnaire and a 1-minute cancer control media. The socio- and medical demographic data, physical activity status information were obtained from self report questionnaires. Results: Breast cancer survivors (n = 51) were found to participate in low-moderate level of physical activity while healthy controls (n = 45) participated in moderate-vigorous level of physical activity. Healthy adults reported more barriers and excuses but all participants (90% survivors and control) were unaware of the strong inverse relationship between level of physical activity and risks of cancer recurrence. The post test on video showed an increased awareness and intention to re-engagement in physical activity for cancer control (M = 7.1 ± 1.53, p sion: The finding suggests that simple public health message within the Model of cancer survivorship care must be disseminated. The “teachable moments” after a cancer diagnosis should be optimised to promote rehabilitation for physically active lifestyle.

Post-operative protein supplementation following orthopaedic surgery: A systematic review

Decreased mechanical loading after orthopaedic surgery predisposes patients to develop muscle *** purpose of this review was to assess whether the evidence supports oral protein supplementation can help decrease postoperative muscle atrophy and/or improve patient outcomes following orthopaedic surgery.A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic Reviews and MetaAnalysis(PRIsMA).PubMed(MEDLINE),Embase,scopus,and Web of science were searched for randomized controlled trials that assessed protein or amino acid supplementation in patients undergoing orthopaedic *** investigators independently conducted the search using relevant Boolean *** outcomes included functional or physiologic measures of muscle atrophy or *** studies including 611 patients(224 males,387 females)were *** studies evaluated protein supplementation after ACL reconstruction(ACLR),3 after total hip arthroplasty(THA),5 after total knee arthroplasty(TKA),and 3 after surgical treatment of hip *** supplementation showed beneficial effects across all types of *** primary benefit was a decrease in muscle atrophy compared to placebo as measured by muscle cross sectional *** authors also demonstrated improved functional measures and quicker achievement of rehabilitation *** supplementation has beneficial effects on mitigating muscle atrophy in the postoperative period following ACLR,THA,TKA,and surgical treatment of hip *** effects often correlate with improved functional measures and quicker achievement of rehabilitation *** research is needed to evaluate long-term effects of protein supplementation and to establish standardized population-specific regimens that maximize treatment efficacy in the postoperative period.
