We investigated the performance trade-offs of fleas(Siphonaptera)while adapting to a novel host using two host generalists(Xenopsylla conformis and Xenopsylla ramesis)and one host specialist(Parapulex chephrenis)maintained on their principal hosts(Meriones crassus for Xenopsylla and Acomys cahirinus for P.chephrenis).We asked whether,over generations,(i)a host generalist may become a specialist by evolving the ability to exploit a novel host and losing the ability to exploit an original host and(ii)a host specialist can become a generalist by evolving the ability to exploit a novel host without losing the ability to exploit an original host.We established an experimental line of each species on a novel host(Acomys russatus for Xenopsylla and M.crassus for P.chephrenis)and maintained this line on this host during 23 generations.We compared reproductive performance of progenitors of each line and their descendants when they exploited either original or novel host in terms of egg number and size,hatching success,offspring production,and offspring size.We found changes in performance over generations in female offspring size only.Xenopsylla conformis demonstrated a tendency to become a host specialist(increased performance on the novel host with a concomitant decreased performance on the original host),whereas P.chephrenis demonstrated a tendency to become a host generalist(increased performance on the novel host without a concomitant decreased performance on the original host).We conclude that the probability of generalist to specialist transition,and vice versa,is context-dependent and varies between species.

The pattern of plague endemicity in Tanzania is characterized by continuous re-appearance of the disease in some locations,while in other neighbouring villages the disease has never or seldom been observed.To understand the reasons for this pattern,we studied small mammal and flea species composition,diversity and relative abundances in two plague-endemic and two plague-free locations.We asked(a)whether fleas more abundant in plague-endemic locations differ in their characteristic abundance and the degree of their host specificity from fleas more abundant in plague-free locations and(b)whether hosts most abundant in plague-endemic locations differ in the diversity of their flea assemblages from hosts most abundant in plague-free locations.We characterized(a)each host species by species richness and degree of taxonomic relatedness of its flea assemblages and(b)each flea species by its mean abundance and size,and degree of taxonomic relatedness of its host spectrum and compared their relative abundances between locations.No significant difference between plague-endemic and plague-free locations in either host density or any variable related to flea abundance or diversity was found.However,there was marginally significant effect of taxonomic distinctness of a flea assemblage harboured by a host on its probability to be more abundant in either plague-endemic or plague-free locations.Furthermore,hosts more abundant in plague-endemic locations tended to harbour closely-related fleas.Finally,while opportunistic and specialist fleas were equally distributed in both sets of locations,fleas exploiting distantly-related hosts were found mainly in plague-free locations during the rainy season.We suggest that the observed patterns might arise due to seasonal and spatial differences in local microclimatic conditions and landscape connectivity.

regular physical exercise has been recognized as a potent modulator of immune function,with its effects including enhanced immune surveillance,reduced inflammation,and improved overall health.While strong evidence exists that physical exercise affects the specific expression and activity of non-coding rNAs(ncrNAs)also involved in immune system regulation,heterogeneity in individual study designs and analyzed exercise protocols exists,and a condensed list of functional,exercise-dependent ncrNAs with known targets in the immune system is missing from the literature.A systematic review and qualitative analysis was used to identify and categorize ncrNAs participating in immune modulation by physical exercise.Two combined approaches were used:(a)a systematic literature search for“ncrNA and exercise immunology”,(b)and a database search for microrNAs(mirNAs)(mirTarBase and DIANA-Tarbase v8)aligned with known target genes in the immune system based on the reactome database,combined with a systematic literature search for“ncrNA and exercise”.Literature searches were based on PubMed,Web of Science,and SPOrTDiscus;and mirNA databases were filtered for targets validated by in vitro experimental data.Studies were eligible if they reported on exercise-based interventions in healthy humans.After duplicate removal,95 studies were included reporting on 164 mirNAs,which were used for the qualitative synthesis.Six studies reporting on long-noncoding rNAs(lncrNAs)or circular rNAs were also identified.results were analyzed using ordering tables that included exercise modality(endurance/resistance exercise),acute or chronic interventions,as well as the consistency in reported change between studies.Evaluation criteria were defined as“validated”with 100%of≥3 independent studies showing identical direction of regulation,“plausible”(≥80%),or“suggestive”(≥70%).For resistance exercise,upregulation of mir-206 was validated while downregulation of mir-133a appeared plausible.For endurance exercise,15 mirNAs were categorized as validated,wit

The dynamics of populations of small mammals of Central Siberia was analyzed.The studies were carried out at the Yenisei ecological station“Mirnoye”of the A.N.Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution,russian Academy of Sciences.The time series analysis was performed by the wavelet transform using the statistical data processing language r.In the 20th century,the dynamics of the population of the community and some of its constituent species(Sorex araneus;S.caecutiens;S.isodon;S.tundrensis;S.minutus;Craseomys rufocanus;Clethrionomys rutilus;Microtus oeconomus;M.agrestis)were characterized by a 4-year periodicity.The type of dynamics changed to noncyclic by the nineties,but by 2022,four species(S.araneus,S.isodon,C.rutilus,and M.oeconomus)and the community as a whole showed a tendency toward recovery of population cycles.The remaining species were characterized by consistently low numbers with irregular low amplitude fluctuations.

Over time,physical activity(PA)has shifted from being a necessity to being an alternative.As a result,levels of PA have sharply decreased.1 Today,we are facing a worldwide pandemic of physical inactivity,with one death every 6 s attributed to insufficient PA.2 To counteract this trend,a tremendous effort is being made to promote regular PA across the lifespan,mainly through the dissemination of knowledge about the health benefits of accumulating sufficient PA.

Background The importance of sheep breeding in the Mediterranean part of the eastern Adriatic has a long tradition since its arrival during the Neolithic migrations.Sheep production system is extensive and generally carried out in traditional systems without intensive systematic breeding programmes for high uniform trait production(carcass,wool and milk yield).Therefore,eight indigenous Croatian sheep breeds from eastern Adriatic treated here as metapopulation(EAS),are generally considered as multipurpose breeds(milk,meat and wool),not specialised for a particular type of production,but known for their robustness and resistance to certain environmental conditions.Our objective was to identify genomic regions and genes that exhibit patterns of positive selection signatures,decipher their biological and productive functionality,and provide a"genomic"characterization of EAS adaptation and determine its production type.results We identified positive selection signatures in EAS using several methods based on reduced local variation,linkage disequilibrium and site frequency spectrum(erOHi,iHS,nSL and CLr).Our analyses identified numerous genomic regions and genes(e.g.,desmosomal cadherin and desmoglein gene families)associated with environmental adaptation and economically important traits.Most candidate genes were related to meat/production and health/immune response traits,while some of the candidate genes discovered were important for domestication and evolutionary processes(e.g.,HOXa gene family and FSIP2).These results were also confirmed by GO and QTL enrichment analysis.Conclusions Our results contribute to a better understanding of the unique adaptive genetic architecture of EAS and define its productive type,ultimately providing a new opportunity for future breeding programmes.At the same time,the numerous genes identified will improve our understanding of ruminant(sheep)robustness and resistance in the harsh and specific Mediterranean environment.

Data gaps and biases are two important issues that affect the quality of biodiversity information and downstream results.Understanding how best to fill existing gaps and account for biases is necessary to improve our current information most effectively.Two current main approaches for obtaining and improving data include(1)curation of biological collections,and(2)fieldwork.However,the comparative effectiveness of these approaches in improving biodiversity data remains little explored.We used the Flora de Bogota project to study the magnitude of change in species richness,spatial coverage,and sample coverage of plant records based on curation versus fieldwork.The process of curation resulted in a decrease in species richness(synonym and error removal),but it significantly increased the number of records per species.Fieldwork contributed to a slight increase in species richness,via accumulation of new records.Additionally,curation led to increases in spatial coverage,species observed by locality,the number of plant records by species,and localities by species compared to fieldwork.Overall,curationwas more efficient in producing new information compared to fieldwork,mainly because of the large number of records available in herbaria.We recommend intensive curatorial work as the first step in increasing biodiversity data quality and quantity,to identify bias and gaps at the regional scale that can then be targeted with fieldwork.The stepwise strategy would enable fieldwork to be planned more costeffectively given the limited resources for biodiversity exploration and characterization.

Immune-checkpoint inhibitor-mediated colitis(IMC)is an increasingly recognized adverse event in cancer immunotherapy,particularly associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs)such as anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 and anti-programmed cell death protein-1 antibodies.As this revolutionary immunotherapy gains prominence in cancer treatment,understanding,diagnosing,and effectively managing IMC becomes paramount.IMC represents a unique challenge due to its immune-mediated nature and potential for severe complications.However,a precise picture of IMC pathophysiology is currently unavailable.Therefore,we aimed to summarize the existing data while acknowledging the need for further research.This comprehensive review explores the mechanisms underlying ICIs,gastrointestinal adverse effects,and,in particular,IMC’s incidence,prevalence,and features.Our review also emphasizes the importance of recognizing IMC’s distinct clinical and histopathological features to differentiate it from other forms of colitis.Furthermore,this paper highlights the urgentneed for evolving diagnostic methods,therapeutic strategies,and a multidisciplinary approach to effectively manage IMC.

Creation of stable intrinsically anisotropic self-bound states with embedded vorticity is a challenging issue.Previously,no such states in Bose−Einstein condensates(BECs)or other physical settings were known.Dipolar BEC suggests a unique possibility to predict stable two dimensional anisotropic vortex quantum droplets(2D-AVQDs).We demonstrate that they can be created with the vortex axis oriented perpendicular to the polarization of dipoles.The stability area and characteristics of the 2D-AVQDs in the parameter space are revealed by means of analytical and numerical methods.Further,the rotation of the polarizing magnetic field is considered,and the largest angular velocities,up to which spinning 2D-AVQDs can follow the rotation in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions,are found.Collisions between moving 2D-AVQDs are studied too,demonstrating formation of bound states with a vortex−antivortex−vortex structure.A stability domain for such stationary bound states is identified.Unstable dipolar states,that can be readily implemented by means of phase imprinting,quickly transform into robust 2D-AVQDs,which suggests a straightforward possibility for the creation of these states in the experiment.
