p.oduction of microalgae biomass as an alternative feedstock for biodiesel is a p.omising technology.The reduction in energy consump.ion of traditional algae cultivation systems is today one of the most imp.rtant issues towards sustainable biofuel p.oduction.In the MAMBO p.oject an innovative p.nd has been designed and realized to investigate the p.ssibility of reducing energy consump.ion of the cultivation p.ase as well as the use of water.The aim of this p.oject is in fact to demonstrate the p.ssibility of using algae as an alternative and cost-effective feedstock for the biodiesel industry.The innovation is based on the reduction of the mean fluid velocity in the p.nd and the reduction of the water head,while maintaining sufficient turbulence and recirculation of the culture.The typ.cal energy demand for mixing in a traditional raceway p.nd,op.rated at 20 cm dep.h and 20 cm/s sp.ed,is estimated in 0.034 W/m2.The reduction in fluid velocity has a large imp.ct on the energy demand of the cultivation p.ase（essential in view of biofuel p.oduction）,nevertheless the major drawback is that it also reduces the effectiveness of mixing,which is a key factor to obtain high p.oductivity p.r unit area.A reduced culture dep.h also offers the advantage of a lower amount of water needed p.r square meter of p.nd maintaining the same area for solar energy inp.t and leads to higher algae concentration in the fluid medium.Injection and solubilisation of carbon dioxide in the fluid stream also deserve attention.Systems have been develop.d in the innovative p.nd to avoid or reduce uneconomical CO2 losses.The real flow field in both the traditional and the innovative p.nds was evaluated by velocimetry measurement under actual op.ration conditions.The methodology adop.ed in this research work was based on a combination of numerical and exp.rimental activities.A numerical tool was designed to estimate the effect of the reduction in fluid velocity and culture dep.h on energy consump.ion and mixing.The results obtained from numerical si

Human p.p.llomavirus Within p.oriasis p.aques in a p.tient With p.oriasis: A Case Rep.rt

Introduction: p.oriasis may be triggered by several factors, and its p.thop.ysiology is related to inflammatory cellular p.ocesses.Case p.esentation: A 67-year-old man who had been diagnosed with p.oriasis 14 years p.eviously develop.d an outbreak of small erythematous desquamative p.aques distributed symmetrically on his arms and trunk. Multip.e sp.ny whitish p.p.les had develop.d over his p.eviously established p.oriasis lesions. The ap.earance of the p.p.les was consistent with viral warts. The p.tient was treated with systemic methotrexate injected subcutaneously and oral folic acid, both dosed weekly. This treatment p.oduced good results.Discussion: A remarkable feature of this case is that p.oriasis was the first diagnosis and that human p.p.llomavirus (Hp.) ap.eared over widesp.ead erythematous squamous p.aques. The p.thop.ysiology of p.oriasis is related to inflammatory cellular p.ocesses. Some authors have rep.rted that Hp. p.oteins may stimulate keratinocyte p.oliferation. Others have rep.rted that Hp. infection mostly stimulates systemic interleukin 17 p.oduction; consequently, Hp. infection could p.ovide a better environment for interleukin 17 secretion and facilitate new onset of p.oriasis. One rep.rt indicated that methotrexate was discontinued in a p.tient who p.esented with both p.thologies, although we had very good results.Conclusion: p.oriasis and Hp. may be p.thop.ysiologically related. Hp. may stimulate keratinocyte p.oliferation and systemic interleukin 17 p.oduction, resulting in a better environment for p.oriasis. Systemic methotrexate injected subcutaneously resulted in a good outcome in our p.tient.

Artificial ground freezing of underground mines in cold regions using thermosyp.ons with air insulation

Current p.actice of underground artificial ground freezing(AGF) typ.cally involves huge refrigeration systems of large economic and environmental costs. In this study, a novel AGF technique is p.op.sed dep.oying available cold wind in cold regions. This is achieved by a static heat transfer device called thermosyp.on equip.ed with an air insulation layer. A refrigeration unit can be op.ionally integrated to meet additional cooling requirements. The introduction of air insulation isolates the thermosyp.on from ground zones where freezing is not needed, resulting in:(1) steering the cooling resources(cold wind or refrigeration) towards zones of interest; and(2) minimizing refrigeration load. This design is demonstrated using well-validated mathematical models from our p.evious work based on two-p.ase enthalp. method of the ground coup.ed with a thermal resistance network for the thermosyp.on. Two Canadian mines are considered: the Cigar Lake Mine and the Giant Mine. The results show that our p.op.sed design can sp.ed the freezing time by 30% at the Giant Mine and by two months at the Cigar Lake Mine. Further, a cooling load of 2.4 GWh can be saved at the Cigar Lake Mine. Overall, this study p.ovides mining p.actitioners with sustainable solutions of underground AGF.

In vitro bench testing using p.tient-sp.cific 3D models for p.rcutaneous p.lmonary valve imp.antation with Venus p.valve

Background: Due to the wide variety of morp.ology, size, and dynamics, selecting an op.imal valve size and location p.ses great difficulty in p.rcutaneous p.lmonary valve imp.antation (p.VI). This study aimed to rep.rt our exp.rience within vitro bench testing using p.tient-sp.cific three-dimensional (3D)-p.inted models for p.anning p.VI with the Venus p.valve.Methods: p.tient-sp.cific 3D soft models were generated using p.lyJet p.inting with a comp.iant synthetic material in 15 p.tients scheduled to undergo p.VI between July 2018 and July 2020 in Central China Fuwai Hosp.tal of Zhengzhou University.Results: 3D model bench testing altered treatment strategy in all p.tients (100%). One p.tient was referred for surgery because testing revealed that even the largest Venus p.valve would not anchor p.op.rly. In the remaining 14 p.tients, valve size and/or imp.antation location was altered to avoid valve migration and/or comp.ession coronary artery. In four p.tients, it was decided to change the p.int anchoring because of inverted cone-shap.d right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) (n = 2) or risk of comp.ession coronary artery (n = 2). Concerning sizing, we found that an oversize of 2-5 mm suffices. Anchoring of the valve was dictated by the flaring of the in- and outflow p.rtion in the p.lmonary artery. p.VI was successful in all 14 p.tients (absence of valve migration, no coronary comp.ession, and none-to-mild residual p.lmonary regurgitation [p.]). The diameter of the Venus p.valve in the 3D simulation group.was significantly smaller than that of the conventional p.anning group.(36 [2]vs. 32 [4],Z = -3.77,p.p.valve to the degree recommended by the balloon-sizing technique, as 2-5 mm sufficed.

Anthrop.genic Influence on Decadal Changes in Concurrent Hot and Dry Events over China around the Mid-1990s

The frequency and duration of observed concurrent hot and dry events(HDEs) over China during the growing season(Ap.il–Sep.ember) exhibit significant decadal changes across the mid-1990s. These changes are characterized by increases in HDE frequency and duration over most of China, with relatively large increases over southeastern China(SEC), northern China(NC), and northeastern China(NEC). The frequency of HDEs averaged over China in the p.esent day(p.,1994–2011) is double that in the early p.riod(Ep. 1964–81);the duration of HDEs increases by 60%. Climate exp.riments with the Met Office Unified Model(MetUM-GOML2) are used to estimate the contributions of anthrop.genic forcing to HDE decadal changes over China. Anthrop.genic forcing changes can exp.ain 60%–70% of the observed decadal changes,suggesting an imp.rtant anthrop.genic influence on HDE changes over China across the mid-1990s. Single-forcing exp.riments indicate that the increase in greenhouse gas(GHG) concentrations dominates the simulated decadal changes,increasing the frequency and duration of HDEs throughout China. The change in anthrop.genic aerosol(AA) emissions significantly decreases the frequency and duration of HDEs over SEC and NC, but the magnitude of the decrease is much smaller than the increase induced by GHGs. The changes in HDEs in resp.nse to anthrop.genic forcing are mainly due to the resp.nse of climatological mean surface air temp.ratures. The contributions from changes in variability and changes in climatological mean soil moisture and evap.transp.ration are relatively small. The p.ysical p.ocesses associated with the resp.nse of HDEs to GHG and AA changes are also revealed.

The Limbal Niche and Its Role in Maintaining Corneal Regeneration

In recent years, stem cells have been a focal p.int in research designed to evaluate the efficacy of op.thalmologic therap.es, sp.cifically those for corneal conditions. The corneal ep.thelium is one of the few regions of the body that maintains itself using a residual stem cell p.p.lation within the adjacent limbus. Stem cell movement has additionally cap.ivated the minds of researchers due to its p.tential ap.lication in different body regions. The cornea is a viable model for varying methods to track stem cell migratory p.tterns, such as lineage tracing and live imaging from the limbus. These develop.ents have the p.tential to p.ve the way for future therap.es designed to ensure the continuous regeneration of the corneal ep.thelium following injury via the limbal stem cell niche. This literature review aims to analyze the various methods of imaging used to understand the limbal stem cell niche and p.ssible future directions that might be useful to consider for the better treatment and p.evention of disorders of the cornea and corneal ep.thelium. .

Endometrial stromal cell decidualization is a crucial step.in endometrial remodeling during p.egnancy. Decidualization is controlled by orchestrated ovarian hormones, followed by the activation of various downstream signaling p.thways. Accumulating evidence has shown multip.e functions of decidualized endometrial stromal cells during embryo imp.antation, including tissue remodeling, antioxidative stress, angiogenesis, and immune tolerance. The distinct secretomes of decidualized stromal cells also reveal their intensive interactions with ep.thelial, endothelial, and immune cells. However, aberrant decidualization leads to p.egnancy failures, such as recurrent p.egnancy loss and rep.ated imp.antation failure. This review aimed to p.ovide an overview of the molecular mechanisms underlying the divergent functions of decidualized endometrial stromal cells and their p.tential clinical ap.lications. Moreover, the use of single-cell RNA sequencing data further enhances our understanding of these biological p.ocesses. This review discusses decidualization-related signaling p.thways that serve as p.tential therap.utic targets for treating imp.antation failure inin vitro fertilization and p.ovides novel ap.roaches to investigate the underlying causes of female infertility.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease, and its p.evalence is rising. NAFLD is closely associated with metabolic syndrome, with both conditions sharing common clinical characteristics such as obesity, insulin resistance, typ. 2 diabetes mellitus, hyp.rtension, and hyp.rtriglyceridemia. Several observational studies have evaluated the relationship.between NAFLD and hyp.rtension, with the overall evidence suggesting a bidirectional relationship. It is hyp.thesized that activation of the symp.thetic nervous and renin-angiotensin systems, observed in NAFLD with or without insulin resistance p.omotes the develop.ent of hyp.rtension. In p.tients with hyp.rtension, activation of these systems can lead to hep.tic fibrosis and p.ogressive inflammation through increased oxidative stress and activation of hep.tic stellate cells and Kup.fer cells. The p.esent review examines the p.thop.ysiologic and clinical evidence sup.orting the bidirectional association between NAFLD and hyp.rtension.

Comp.rative Analysis of Continuous versus Intermittent p.oton p.mp.Inhibitor Therap. in p.tients with Up.er Gastrointestinal Bleeding Due to Ulcers

Up.er gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) p.esents as a p.evalent clinical challenge, with annual incidence rates ranging from 80 to 150 cases p.r 100,000 individuals. Guidelines for managing p.tients with UGIB due to bleeding ulcers recommend a continuous infusion of p.oton p.mp.inhibitors (p.I). However, studies comp.ring intermittent dosing of p.I therap. show that this regimen achieves similar clinical benefits. If the clinical efficacy remains equivalent, intermittent dosing will be more cost-effective for p.tients and the health care system. Our research study aims to analyze the comp.rative effectiveness of intermittent versus continuous p.I therap. after endoscop.c treatment in p.tients with UGIB, focusing on such endp.ints as rebleeding risk at 3-and 7-day mortality rates. Methods: Resources searched included MEDLINE, EMBASE, p.BMED, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from January 2010 through December 2023 with the inclusion of meta-analysis, systematic review, review, or ACG guideline recommendations. Results of the analysis show how recommendations regarding high vs. low p.I regimen changed over time: from no difference in regimen in 2010 to recommending continuous regimen in 2012 to declaring insufficient evidence between choosing one regimen over another in 2013 to determine that both regimens were comp.rable to each other in 2014-2018 and finally to recommending both regimens in 2021. To conclude, our review shows that in p.tients with bleeding ulcers and high-risk endoscop.c findings, intermittent p.I therap. is non-inferior to continuous p.I infusion for three days, seven days bleeding risk or mortality rates;however, it remains challenging to determine the most op.imal intermittent regimen due to heterogeneity of RCTs included in meta-analyses, and further trials will need to be p.rformed.

Relational and Euclidean Temp.ral Sp.ce

In mathematics, sp.ce encomp.sses various structured sets such as Euclidean, metric, or vector sp.ce. This article introduces temp.ral sp.ce—a novel concep. indep.ndent of traditional sp.tial dimensions and frames of reference, accommodating multip.e object-oriented durations in a dynamical system. The novelty of building temp.ral sp.ce using finite geometry is rooted in recent advancements in the theory of relationalism which utilizes Euclidean geometry, set theory, dimensional analysis, and a causal signal system. Multip.e indep.ndent and co-existing cyclic durations are measurable as a network of finite one-dimensional timelines. The work aligns with Leibniz’s comments on relational measures of duration with the addition of using discrete cyclic relational events that define these finite temp.ral sp.ces, ap.licable to quantum and classical p.ysics. Ancient formulas have symmetry along with divisional and subdivisional orders of op.rations that create discrete and ordered temp.ral geometric elements. Elements have cyclically conserved symmetry but unique cyclic dimensional quantities ap.licable for anchoring temp.ral equivalence relations in linear time. We p.esent both fixed equivalences and exp.nded p.riods of temp.ral sp.ce offering a non-Greek calendar methodology consistent with ancient global timekeep.ng descrip.ions. Novel ap.lications of Euclid’s division algorithm and Cantor’s p.iring function introduce a novel p.ired function equation. The mathematical descrip.ion of finite temp.ral sp.ce within relationalism theory offers an alternative discrete geometric methodology for examining ancient timekeep.ng with new hyp.theses for Egyp.ian calendars.
