Thyroid Function in Pregnant Women from a West-African Population

Thyroid dysfunction is frequent in pregnant women and is often associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcome. In the present work, thyroid function of pregnant women from Benin republic was studied. Two hundred forty (240) pregnant women, without thyroid disease history, have been included in the study. A blood sample was drawn for measurement of TSH, free T3 and free T4 serum levels. From the first to the third trimester, plasma levels of free T3 and free T4 decreased when plasma levels of TSH increased. Using recommendations of the 2011 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines, thyroid dysfunction was observed in 24.17% of subjects. Hypothyroidism was present in 22.50% of subjects with 19.17% of subclinical hypothyroidism, 0.83% of overt hypothyroidism and 2.50% of hypothyroxinemia and hyperthyroidism was observed in 1.67% of subjects. An increase from 15.52% to 28.07% was observed in the frequency of hypothyroidism from the first to the third trimester of pregnancy. When an upper cut-off value of 4 mU/L was used for TSH, as recommended in the 2017 ATA guidelines, prevalence of thyroid disorders was 14.58% with 12.91% of hypothyroidism but no hypothyroidism was observed in women in the first trimester of pregnancy. A rise in hypothyroidism frequency was observed when pregnant women age increased. Hypothyroidism was very common in pregnant women in Benin. To allow accurate assessment of thyroid status in pregnant women in Benin, pregnancy specific range for plasma level of TSH and thyroid hormones should be established.

Health Effects of Consuming Vegetables Grown in the Presence of Salt: A Systematic Review

In arid and semi-arid areas, salinity problems are common due to several factors. In Africa, salinity and alkalinity affect 24% of the continent’s arid and semi-arid areas and about 30% of the African population depends on these lands. This salinity is not without consequences for crops. The objective of this systematic review is to update research knowledge on the effects of salt stress on vegetables and consumers. To achieve this, several searches were conducted in four search engines and bibliographic databases of electronic scientific journals (PubMed, African Journal Online, Google scholar and Cochrane). The PICO-based research question for this synthesis was: In rats consuming mutant or non-mutant vegetables grown in the presence of salt, does the consumption of mutant or non-mutant vegetables grown in the presence of salt have an impact on the health of consumers? A total of 321 articles were available in the scientific journals explored, only three addressed the effect on nutritional aspects and none of them addressed the health effects of vegetables grown in the presence of salt. The results of these interventions revealed that salt stress altered the nutritional profile of the plants explored. This alteration was reflected in variations in vitamin and mineral content. Moreover, salt stress could also alter the number of fruits on the plants. This systematic review will therefore contribute to the implementation of research on the impact of the consumption of vegetables grown in the presence of salt on the health of consumers.

This paper presents a security constrained unit commitment(SCUC)suitable for power systems with a large share of wind *** deterministic spinning reserve requirement is supplemented by an adjustable fraction of the expected shortfall from the supply of wind electric generators(WEGs),computed using the stochastic feature of wind and loosely represented in the security constraint with *** optimization tool commits and dispatches generating units while simultaneously determining the geographical procurement of the required spinning reserve as well as load-following ramping reserve,by mixed integer quadratic programming(MIQP).Case studies are used to investigate various effects of grid integration on reducing the overall operation costs associated with more wind power in the system.

Childhood constipation as an emerging public health problem

Functional constipation(FC) is a significant health problem in children and contrary to common belief, has serious ramifications on the lives of children and their families. It is defined by the Rome criteria which encourage the use of multiple clinical features for diagnosis. FC in children has a high prevalence(0.7%-29%) worldwide, both in developed and developing countries. Biopsychosocial risk factors such as psychological stress, poor dietary habits, obesity and child maltreatment are commonly identified predisposing factors for FC. FC poses a significant healthcare burden on the already overstretched health budgets of many countries in terms of out-patient care, in-patient care, expenditure for investigations and prescriptions. Complications are common and range from minor psychological disturbances, to lower health-related quality of life. FC in children also has a significant impact on families. Many paediatric clinical trials have poor methodological quality, and drugs proved to be useful in adults, are not effective in relieving symptoms in children. A significant proportion of inadequately treated children have similar symptoms as adults. These factors show that constipation is an increasing public health problem across the world with a significant medical, social and economic impact. This article highlights the potential public health impact of FC and the possibility of overcoming this problem by concentrating on modifiable risk factors rather than expending resources on high cost investigations and therapeutic modalities.

Olive fruits infested with olive fly larvae respond with an ethylene burst and the emission of specific volatiles

Olive fly（Bactrocera oleae R.） is the most harmful insect pest of olive（Olea europaea L.） which strongly affects fruits and oil production. Despite the expanding economic importance of olive cultivation, up to now, only limited information on plant responses to B. oleae is available. Here,we demonstrate that olive fruits respond to B. oleae attack by producing changes in an array of different defensive compounds including phytohormones, volatile organic compounds（VOCs）, and defense proteins. Bactrocera oleaeinfested fruits induced a strong ethylene burst and transcript levels of several putative ethylene-responsive transcription factors became significantly upregulated. Moreover, infested fruits induced significant changes in the levels of 12-oxophytodienoic acid and C12 derivatives of the hydroperoxide lyase. The emission of VOCs was also changed quantitatively and qualitatively in insect-damaged fruits, indicating that *** larval feeding can specifically affect the volatile blend offruits. Finally, we show that larval infestation maintained high levels of trypsin protease inhibitors in ripe fruits, probably by affecting post-transcriptional mechanisms. Our results provide novel and important information to understand the response of the olive fruit to B. oleae attack; information that can shed light onto potential new strategies to combat this pest.

Generalization of the Global Error Minimization for Constructing Analytical Solutions to Nonlinear Evolution Equations

The global error minimization is a variational method for obtaining approximate analytical solutions to nonlinear oscillator equations which works as follows. Given an ordinary differential equation, a trial solution containing unknowns is selected. The method then converts the problem to an equivalent minimization problem by averaging the squared residual of the differential equation for the selected trial solution. Clearly, the method fails if the integral which defines the average is undefined or infinite for the selected trial. This is precisely the case for such non-periodic solutions as heteroclinic (front or kink) and some homoclinic (dark-solitons) solutions. Based on the fact that these types of solutions have vanishing velocity at infinity, we propose to remedy to this shortcoming of the method by averaging the product of the residual and the derivative of the trial solution. In this way, the method can apply for the approximation of all relevant type of solutions of nonlinear evolution equations. The approach is simple, straightforward and accurate as its original formulation. Its effectiveness is demonstrated using a Helmholtz-Duffing oscillator.

光伏(PV)技术迅速改善了农业灌溉领域,大部分在偏远和沙漠地区;卢旺达政府的目标是从发展中国家转向以农业生产为基础的中等收入国家。卢旺达80%以上的人口以农业为生。因此,本研究项目主要侧重于卢旺达东部地区干旱气候背景下的大型太阳能智能灌溉系统的设计和建模。长期月平均每日太阳全球辐照度在5月的4.8kwh/m/day至7月的5.8kwh/m/day之间。因此,光伏地理信息系统(PVGIS)估计选址区域日平均太阳辐照度为5.2kwh/m/day,显示出太阳能在智能灌溉方面的良好发展潜力。该论文基于MATLAB/Simulink进行系统建模,使用基于MPPT方法的增量电导进行仿真分析,以便在PWM系统中面板电压和电池应匹配。分析结果表明,该系统可向太阳能水泵输送100kw的电量,以每天4小时540m3的水量对玉米田进行智能灌溉,既高效又经济可行。采用太阳能抽水系统是持久保持偏远干旱地区农村社区可持续发展的重要手段。

A new flavonol glycoside, 3＇-（4＇＂-（3＇＂＇,4＇＂＇-dihydroxyphenoxy）-2＇＂-hydroxyphenoxy）acanthophorin B （la） to- gether with 3＇-（2＇＂,4＂＇-dihydroxyphenoxy）acanthophorin B （1）, acanthophorin B （2）, vismiaquinone （3）, rheochrysidin （3a）, lupeol acetate and fatty acid were isolated from the chloroform extract of the stem bark of Psorospermum androsaemifolium Baker （Clusiaceae）. The structure of la was determined on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the literature. Compounds la and 3a showed moderate antimicrobial activity.

近年来，不同电子设备的功能、性能、以及运行时间不断提升了它们对功率的需求。由于传统的植入式电池和经皮软线可靠性的问题，松耦合无线充电系统（LooselyCoupled Wireless Charging System-LCWCS）作为一种新的电力传输技术，已经获得了广泛的关注尤其是在电子领域最为发达的国家，比如美国、日本和中国。LCWCS是一种很有前途的充电方法，在今天的电子世界中有许多应用，它能来安全地给现代电子器件，如生物医学微系统器件、医疗植入物等提供更多能量或带来更长寿命。然而,它的发展和实施遇到了一些困难,影响它的使用性。此系统的主要用于医疗设备领域，如生物医学微系统器件、医疗植入物的充电系统。因此，充电系统的接收器位于人体内，而发射器在人体外。考虑到人皮肤的厚度（0.54毫米）、皮肤皱壁厚度、收发器线圈的尺寸,系统传输距离必须大于15毫米。因此，松散耦合被选定为此无线充电系统设计的耦合类型。在松耦合无线充电系统设计过程中，我们根据设计要求和应用通过ANSYSMaxwell软件进行了共振线圈系统建模。本系统的发射线圈和接收线圈的直径分别为58毫米和18毫米，传送距离大约为20毫米。所设计模型的耦合系数为0.067。通过对无线充电系统不同补偿拓扑结构（SS、SP、PS、PP）的研究和分析，以及系统设计要求和应用，我们选定了串-并（SP）结构作为此设计的拓扑结构。由ANSYS Maxwell软件生成的线圈模型，我们通过ANSYS Simplorer软件设计了松耦合无线充电系统（LCWCS）主电路，并且对不同参数进行仿真。系统主电路由交流电源、原副边补偿、副边整流电路、副边激励电路、负载电阻以及线圈系统组成的。 LCWCS系统的输出电压和输出功率分别为5.2V和50W，该系统传输效率约为56.5%。为了获得最佳的充电效果，需要对充电系统进行优化。我们通过最大传输功率以及系统性能两中指标来进行系统优化。系统性能指标包括系统的传输功率，传输效率，线圈尺寸，可靠性等系统参数。因此，本文对不同的拓扑结构互感和品质因数的优化进行了深入研究，从而在系统传输功率减少了大约11%的前提下，使得该系统的功率传输效率提高到了67％左右。
