In order to investigate the influence of functional polymorphisms of macrophage migration inhibitory factor （M/F）, Fcg receptors CD16A （FCGR3A） and CD32A （FCGR2A） genes on susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis （PTB） in the Moroccan population, we analyzed 123 patients with PTB and 154 healthy controls. The genotyping for M/F-173 （G/C）（rs755622）, FCGR2A- 131H/R （rs 1801274） and FCGR3A-158V/F （rs396991） was carried out using TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assay method. We found a statistically significant in- crease of the MIF-173CC homozygote genotype and M/F-173＂C allele frequencies in PTB patients compared with healthy controls （17.07% versus 5.84%, P = 0.003; and 35.37% versus 26.30%, P = 0.02; respectively）. In contrast, no association was observed between FCGR2A-131H/R and FCGR3A-158V/F polymorphisms and tuberculosis disease. Our finding suggests that M/F-173℃ variant may play an important role in the development of active tuberculosis.

Background Over the last two decades,umbilical cord blood(UCB)and haploidentical transplantation(HaploHSCT)have emerged as alternative sources of hematopoietic stem cell for allogeneic *** are few retrospective studies and no prospective studies comparing both types of alternative transplantation in pediatric *** We analyzed the data of 134 children with hematological malignancies who received a hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from a single umbilical cord blood(UCB)(n=42)or an"tex-vivo"T-cell depleted transplant from a haploi-dentical-related donor(HaploHSCT)(n=92)between 1996 and *** recovery was faster after HaploHSCT than the UCB transplant group(median times to neutrophil and platelet recovery:13 vs.16 days,10 vs.57 days,respectively)(P<0.001).The HaploHSCT group had a significantly early immune reconstitution based on NK and CD8+T cells compared with the UCB ***,after the first year *** had a lower number of CD4+ T and B lymphocytes compared with the UCB transplant *** cumulative incidence of TRM was 29±8%in the HaploHSCT group versus 40±5%in the UCB *** incidence was 21±7%in the HaploHSCT group and 19±8%in the UCB *** of DFS was 58±8%in the HaploHSCT group versus 40±9%in the UCB group(P=0.051).Conclusions TCD haploidentical transplant is associated with advantages in terms of engraftment and early immune reconstitution *** haploidentical transplant was associated with lower incidence of infectious and non-infectious complications,especially in the early phases of the transplant compared with UCB transplant ***,there are no advantages in transplant outcomes compared with UCB transplant.

Tillage practices on sloping ground often result in unsustainable soil losses impairing soil functions such as crop productivity,water and nutrients storage,and soil organic carbon(SOC)sequestration.A sloping olive grove(10%)was planted in shallow gypsiferous soils in *** was managed by minimum tillage;the most frequent management practice in central *** consequences of erosion were studied in soil samples(at 0-10,10-20,and 20-30 cm depths)by analyzing SOC,available water and gypsum content,and by detecting spectral signatures using an ASD FieldSpecPro(R)VIS/*** Brightness index(BI),Shape index(FI),and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)were derived from the ASD spectral signatures and from remote sensing(Sentinel-2 image)*** development of these young olive trees was estimated from the measured diameter of the trunks(17±18 cm diameter).In 20-30 cm of the soil,the carbon stock(38±18 Mg ha-1)as well as the available water content(12±6%)was scarce,affecting the productivity of the olive *** above-mentioned indices obtained from the laboratory samples and the pixels of the Sentinel-2 image were significantly(p<0.01)correlated,with a correlation coefficient of around *** BI was related to the gypsum content and the slope of the *** FI was related to the carbon and water *** NDVI derived from the satellite image identified the influence of soil degradation on the trees and the carbon *** spatialtemporal changes of the indices might help in tracking soil changes over time.

BACKGROUND Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is a highly prevalent condition. It is diagnosed on the basis of chronic symptoms after the clinical and/or investigative exclusion of organic diseases that can cause similar symptoms. There is no reproducible noninvasive test for the diagnosis of IBS, and this raises diagnostic uncertainty among physicians and hinders acceptance of the diagnosis by *** gastrointestinal(GI) syndromes often present with overlapping upper and lower GI tract symptoms, now believed to be generated by visceral hypersensitivity. This study examines the possibility that, in IBS, a nutrient drink test(NDT) provokes GI symptoms that allow a positive differentiation of these patients from healthy *** To evaluate the NDT for the diagnosis of *** This prospective case-control study compared the effect of two different nutrient drinks on GI symptoms in 10 IBS patients(patients) and 10 healthy controls(controls). The 500 kcal high nutrient drink and the low nutrient 250 kcal drink were given in randomized order on separate days. Symptoms were assessed just before and at several time points after drink ingestion. Global dyspepsia and abdominal scores were derived from individual symptom data recorded by two questionnaires designed by our group, the upper and the general GI symptomquestionnaires, respectively. Psycho-social morbidity and quality of life were also formally assessed. The scores of patients and controls were compared using single factor analysis of variance *** At baseline, IBS patients compared to controls had significantly higher levels of GI symptoms such as gastro-esophageal reflux(P = 0.05), abdominal pain(P =0.001), dyspepsia(P = 0.001), diarrhea(P = 0.001), and constipation(P = 0.001) as well as higher psycho-social morbidity and lower quality of life. Carotenoid-based ornaments are often considered reliable(honest)individual condition signals because their expression implies physiological costs unaffordable for low-quality animals(handicap signals).Recently,it has been suggested that efficient cell respiration is mandatory for producing red ketocarotenoids from dietary yellow *** implies that red colorations should be entirely unfalsifiable and independent of expression costs(index signals).In a precedent study,male common crossbills,Loxia curvirostra,showing a red plumage reported higher apparent survival than those showing yellowish-orange *** plumage redness in this species is due to ketocarotenoid accumulation in ***,we correlated the male plumage redness(a 4-level visual score:yellow,patchy,orange,and red)and the body morphology in more than 1,ooo adult crossbills captured in 3 Iberian localities to infer the mechanisms responsible for color evolution.A principal component analysis summarized morphometry of 10 variables(beak,wing,tarsus length,etc.).The overall body size(PC1)and the length of flight feathers regarding body size(Pc3)showed significant positive relationships with plumage *** redness was barely correlated with bill shape measures,suggesting no constraint in acquiring carotenoids from pine ***,large body sizes or proportionally long flying feathers could help carotenoid acquisition via social competition or increased foraging *** longer flight feathers might also be associated with a specific cell respiration profile that would simultaneously favor flying capacities and enzymatic transformations needed for ketocarotenoid *** a phenotypic profile would agree with the hypothesis of ketocarotenoid-based colors acting as individual quality index signals.

Beta-blockers and physical frailty in patients with endstage liver disease

AIM To investigate beta-blocker(BB) use in patients with cirrhosis and determine their effects on physical frailty and overall *** Adult outpatients with cirrhosis listed for liver transplantation underwent testing of physical frailty using the performance-based Liver Frailty Index, comprised of chair stands, grip strength, and balance testing, as well as self-reported assessments of exhaustion and physical activity. BB use was assessed from medical chart review. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were performed to determine BB use and their association with measures of physical frailty. Competing risk analyses were performed to determine the effect of BB use on wait-list mortality, as defined by death or delisting for being too sick for *** Of 344 patients, 35% were female, median age was 60, median model for end stage liver disease was 15, and 53% were prescribed a BB. Compared to those not on BB, patients on BB were similar except for percentage female(25% vs 46%; P < 0.001) and BMI(29 vs 28; P = 0.008). With respect to tests of physical frailty, BB use was not associated with increased odds of frailty(by the Liver Frailty Index), exhaustion, or low physical activity. BB use was, however, significantly associated with a decreased adjusted risk of mortality(SHR 0.55; P = 0.005).CONCLUSION In patients with cirrhosis awaiting liver transplantation, BB use is not associated with physical frailty. We confirmed the known survival benefits with BB use, and concerns about adverse effects should not deter their utilization when indicated.
