Assessment of buckling-restrained braced frame reliability using an experimental limit-state model and stochastic dynamic analysis

Buckling-restrained braces （BRBs） have recently become popular in the United States for use as primary members of seismic lateral-force-resisting systems. A BRB is a steel brace that does not buckle in compression but instead yields in both tension and compression. Although design guidelines for BRB applications have been developed, systematic procedures for assessing performance and quantifying reliability are still needed. This paper presents an analytical framework for assessing buckling-restrained braced frame （BRBF） reliability when subjected to seismic loads. This framework efficiently quantifies the risk of BRB failure due to low-cycle fatigue fracture of the BRB core. The procedure includes a series of components that：（1） quantify BRB demand in terms of BRB core deformation histories generated through stochastic dynamic analyses; （2） quantify the limit-state of a BRB in terms of its remaining cumulative plastic ductility capacity based on an experimental database; and （3） evaluate the probability of BRB failure, given the quantified demand and capacity, through structural reliability analyses. Parametric studies were conducted to investigate the effects of the seismic load, and characteristics of the BRB and BRBF on the probability of brace failure. In addition, fragility curves （i.e., conditional probabilities of brace failure given ground shaking intensity parameters） were created by the proposed framework. While the framework presented in this paper is applied to the assessment of BRBFs, the modular nature of the framework components allows for application to other structural components and systems.

Intravital imaging of adriamycin-induced renal pathology using two-photon microscopy and optical coherence tomography

Adriamycin(doxorubicin),a common cancer chemotherapeutic drug,can be used to induce a model of chronic progressive glomerular disease in *** our studies,we evahuated renal changes in a rat model after Adriamydin injection using two photon microscopy(TPm),optical coherence tomography(OCT)and Doppler OCT(DOCT).Taking advantage of deep penetra-tion and fast scanning speed for three dimensional(3D)label-free imaging,OCT/DOCT system was able to reveal glomerular and tubular pathology noninvasively and in real *** imaging renal pathology following the infusion of fAuorophore-labeled dextrans of different molecular weights,TPm can provide direct views of glomerular and tubular flow dynamics with the onset and progression of renal ***,glomerular permeability and filtration,proximal and distal tubular flow dynamics can be revealed.6-8 weeks after injection of Adriamycin,TPm and OCT/DOCT imaging revealed glomerular sclerosis,compromised flow across the glomerular wall,tubular atrophy,tubular dilation,and variable intra-tubular flow *** results indicate that TPm and OCT/DOCT provide real-time imaging of renal pathology in vivo that has not been previously available using conventional microscopic procedures.

Comparison of three-dimensional fluorescence analysis methods for predicting formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids

This work investigated the application of several fluorescence excitation–emission matrix analysis methods as natural organic matter（NOm） indicators for use in predicting the formation of trihalomethanes（THms） and haloacetic acids（HAAs）. Waters from four different sources（two rivers and two lakes） were subjected to jar testing followed by 24 hr disinfection by-product formation tests using chlorine. NOm was quantified using three common measures： dissolved organic carbon, ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm, and specific ultraviolet absorbance as well as by principal component analysis, peak picking,and parallel factor analysis of fluorescence spectra. Based on multi-linear modeling of THms and HAAs, principle component（PC） scores resulted in the lowest mean squared prediction error of cross-folded test sets（THms： 43.7（μg/L）^2, HAAs： 233.3（μg/L）^2）. Inclusion of principle components representative of protein-like material significantly decreased prediction error for both THms and HAAs. Parallel factor analysis did not identify a protein-like component and resulted in prediction errors similar to traditional NOm surrogates as well as fluorescence peak picking. These results support the value of fluorescence excitation–emission matrix–principal component analysis as a suitable NOm indicator in predicting the formation of THms and HAAs for the water sources studied.

The Web has undergone a tremendous change from a primarily publication platform towards a participatory and"programmable"platform,where a large number of heterogeneous Web-delivered services(including SOAP and RESTful Web services,RSS and Atom feeds)are *** results in the creation of Web mashup applications with rich user ***,the integration of Web-delivered services is still a challenging *** not only requires the developers’tedious eforts in understanding and coordinating heterogeneous service types,but also results in the time-consuming development of user *** this paper,we propose the imashup composition framework to facilitate mashup development and *** provide a unified mashup component model for the common representation of heterogeneous Web-delivered service *** component model specifies necessary properties and behaviors at both business and user interface *** associate the component model with semantically meaningful tags,so that mashup developers can fast understand the service *** mashup developers can search and put the proper mashup components into the Web browser based composition environment,and connect them by data flows based on the tag-based *** an integration manner might prevent some low-level programming eforts and improve the composition efciency.A series of experimental study are conducted to evaluate our framework.

Data-driven synthesis of multiple recommendation patterns to create situational Web mashups

As a typical situational application,Web mashup reflects and accommodates some key features of Internetware *** provides a development fashion that integrates data,computation and UI elements from multiple resources into a single Web application,and promises the quick rollout of creating potential new functionalities *** paper focuses on the problem of recommending useful suggestions for developing data-driven mashups by synthesis of multiple *** present a rapid and intuitive system called imashupAdvisor,for aiding mashup development based on a novel automated suggestion *** key observation guiding the development of imashupAdvisor is that mashups developed by different users might share some common patterns,for instance,selecting similar mashup components for similar goals,and gluing them in a similar *** patterns could reside in multiple sources,e.g.,the data dependency between mashup components,the interaction between users and mashup components,or the collective intelligence from existing applications created and maintained by programmers,*** leverages the synthesis of these patterns to recommend useful suggestions for a partial mashup,such as the missing components,connections between them,or potentially relevant options,to assist mashup *** paper presents the data model and ranking metrics of the synthesis process,and introduces efficient algorithms for the retrieval of *** also experimentally demonstrate the efficiency of our approach for benefiting the proposed rapid mashup development.

Soil carbon stock and emission: estimates from three land-use systems in Ghana

Background:Land-use systems that sequester carbon and reduce CO_(2) emissions are key in the global mitigation strategies of climate *** gas emission from agro-ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa is little ***,we quantified soil carbon stock(SCS)and CO_(2) emissions from three land-use systems *** land,oil palm plantation and forestland in the semi-deciduous forest zone of ***:Soil organic carbon concentration at the 0–15 cm layer in the forestland was 62 and 23%greater than that in the arable land and palm plantation,*** SCS along the 1.0-m profile was 108.2,99.0 and 73.5 mg ha^(−1) in the forestland,palm plantation and arable land,*** land emitted 30–46%more CO_(2) than palm plantation and *** the dry season,CO_(2) emissions were respectively 0.93,0.63 and 0.5 kg ha^(−1) h−1 from the arable land,palm plantation and *** relationships were observed between CO_(2) emissions and SCS,soil temperature,and *** SCS greatly influenced CO_(2) emission in the dry season more than in the wet season in the relatively higher carbon-input systems(forestland and palm plantation).Soil temperature accounted for more than 55%of CO_(2) emissions in both seasons,which has implications in the era of rising global ***:The study provides relevant information on carbon storage abilities of the three land-use types in tropical climate and calls for drastic climate change actions to reduce degradation of forest cover and soil disturbance in agro-ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa.

Doctor communication quality and Friends' attitudes influence complementary medicine use in inflammatory bowel disease

AIm: To examine the frequency of regular complementary and alternative therapy(CAm) use in three Australian cohorts of contrasting care setting and geography, and identify independent attitudinal and psychological predictors of CAm use across all cohorts. mETHODS: A cross sectional questionnaire was administered to inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) patients in 3 separate cohorts which differed by geographical region and care setting. Demographics and frequency of regular CAm use were assessed, along with attitudes towards IBD medication and psychological parameters such as anxiety, depression, personality traits and quality of life(QOL), and compared across cohorts. Independent attitudinal and psychological predictors of CAm use were determined using binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: In 473 respondents(mean age 50.3 years, 60.2% female) regular CAm use was reported by45.4%, and did not vary between cohorts. Only 54.1%of users disclosed CAm use to their doctor. Independent predictors of CAm use which confirm those reported previously were: covert conventional medication dose reduction(P ment(P medication(P = 0.043), and higher QOL(P m use by family or friends(P mmunication(P m use, these data show that physician attention to communication and the patient-doctor relationship is important as these factors influence CAm use. Patient reluctance to discuss CAm with physicians may promote greater reliance on social contacts to influence CAm decisions.

Species with especially close dependence on the environment to meet physiological requirements,such as ectotherms,are highly susceptible to the impacts of climate *** change is occurring rapidly in the Subarctic and Arctic,but there is limited knowledge on ectotherm physiology in these *** investigated how environmental conditions and habitat characteristics inﬂuence the physiological conditions and habitat use of wood frogs(Rana sylvatica)in a Subarctic landscape near Churchill,manitoba(Canada).We used plaster models to estimate water loss rates and surface body temperatures among different habitat types and at speciﬁc locations used by radio-tracked *** loss(R2=0.67)and surface temperature(R2=0.80)of plaster models was similar to that of live ***-based water loss rates were greater in tundra habitat than in boreal forest and ecotone *** use of wood frogs was strongly tied with available surface moisture and decreased water loss rates that were observed with plaster *** conditions,such as wind speed and ground tem-perature,explained 58%and 91%of the variation in water balance and temperature of plaster *** physiological conditions may be challenging for semi-aquatic ectotherms in environments vulnerable to future cli-mate *** ability to predict physiological conditions based on environmental conditions,as demonstrated in our study,can help understand how wildlife will respond to climatic changes.
