Daily, minute-to-minute measurements of.ground level photon emissions in Sudbury, Ontario Canada displayed conspicuous increases more than one week bef.re the 2011 M9.0 earthquake in Japan and the 2010 M8.8 earthquake in Chile. Temporal prof.les of.the antecedent increase and subsequent decline in power densities f.r the two events were remarkably similar. Antecedent changes f.r 7.0 8.0) seismic events anywhere on the planet.

The daily median ground surf.ce f.ux densities per day f.om a continuously operating photomultiplier tube unit f.r f.ur years in Sudbury, Ontario are presented f.r December 2010 to December 2014. Increases of.about 2 to 4 PMT units (1 unit = 5 × 10-11 W·m-2) f.r median daily measures reliably occurred about two weeks bef.re M ≥ 7.7 earthquakes anywhere on the planet. The PMT units, until June 2014, usually returned to baseline within a f.w days af.er the events. There has been a slow positive drif. in f.ux power density since about 2012 and a conspicuous maintained increase af.er May, 2014. The equivalent energy per day if.it were represented isotropically within the volume occupied by the earth is the same order of.magnitude as the average daily global total seismic energy release. Spectral power densities revealed enhanced peaks (periodicities) between 100 to 150 days, 60 days, 30 days, and 25 days. Discriminable peaks in power were noted around 18 days, 14 days, and 4 to 6 days. These results suggest that continuous measurement of.photonemissions within hyper-dark conditions may reveal geophysical processes that precede larger seismic events and could ref.ect the movement of.the earth-solar system around the galactic center.

Enabling the use of.rationally designed thin f.lms in technological devices is a recognized goal in materials science. However, constructing such thin f.lms using highly ordered supramolecular architectures with well-controlled size and growth direction has remained an elusive target. Here, we introduce a layer-by- layer protocol to grow hybrid thin f.lms of.molecule-based magnetic conductors comprising arachidic acid and donor bis（ethylenedioxy）tetrathiaf.lvalene （BEDO-TTf. as the organic component and Cu/Gd complexes as the inorganic component. The construction of.layered hybrid thin f.lms was achieved at ambient conditions by employing the Langmuir-Blodgett method, which provides good control over f.lm thickness and packing of.molecules in the monolayer. As demonstrated by X-ray dif.raction, these f.lms are crystalline with distinct organic and inorganic sublattices, where the BEDO-TTf.molecular layer is interf.ced with the inorganic layer. Due to the f.exibility of.the Langmuir-Blodgett deposition technique, this result indicates a route toward the preparation of.well-ordered f.lms with various f.nctionalities, determined by the choice of.the inorganic compound that is combined with the π-unit of.BEDO-Tf.. Moreover, the ability to deposit f.lms on a variety of.substrates establishes the potential f.r lower-cost device f.brication on inexpensive substrates.

It is known that contact lines keep relatively still on solids until static contact angles exceed an interval of.hysteresis of.static contact angle (HSCA), and contact angles keep changing as contact lines relatively slide on the solid. Here, the ef.ects of.HSCA and boundary slip were f.rst distinguished on the micro-curvature f.rce (MCf. on the seta. Hence, the total MCf.is partitioned into static and dynamic MCf. correspondingly. The static MCf.was f.und proportional to the HSCA and related with the asymmetry of.the micro-meniscus near the seta. The dynamic MCf. exerting on the relatively sliding contact line, is aroused by the boundary slip. Based on the blake-Haynes mechanism, the dynamic MCf.was proved important f.r water walking insects with legs slower than the minimum wave speed . As insects brush the water by laterally swinging legs backwards, setae on the f.ont side of.the leg are pulled and the ones on the back side are pushed to cooperatively propel bodies f.rward. If.they pierce the water surf.ce by vertically swinging legs downwards, setae on the upside of.the legs are pulled, and the ones on the downside are pushed to cooperatively obtain a jumping f.rce. Based on the dependency between the slip length and shear rate, the dynamic MCf.was f.und correlated with the leg speed U, as , where and are determined by the dimple depth. Discrete points on this curve could give f.tted relations as (Suter et al., J. Exp. Biol. 200, 2523-2538, 1997). f.nally, the axial torque on the inclined and partially submerged seta was f.und determined by the surf.ce tension, contact angle, HSCA, seta width, and tilt angle. The torque direction coincides with the orientation of.the spiral grooves of.the seta, which encourages us to surmise it is a mechanical incentive f.r the f.rmation of.the spiral morphology of.the setae of.water striders.

The wear patterns f.r drum-style automotive brakes tend to enlarge internal drum diameters. Such enlargement is most prof.und when used brake drums are machined to restore the metal f.iction surf.ces. Specialized arc grinding machinery has been used to match replacement shoe-style brake f.iction materials to enlarged drums. The process of.arc grinding removes f.iction material, thereby producing dust. When organic-style f.iction materials contained asbestos, use of.arc grinding machinery posed an asbestos f.ber exposure risk to operators and proximate personnel. The manuf.cturers of.arc grinding machinery have incorporated local exhaust ventilation systems designed to capture and remove this dust at the point of.grinding contact and propel this dust into collection bags or other systems. This research was designed to evaluate the dust capture and retention characteristics of.a specif.c arc grinder product, when used to custom grind asbestos-containing brake f.iction materials. A Bear Model 1420 automotive brake shoe arc grinder was the subject of.this study. During two separate but consecutive test sessions, newly relined sets of.shoe-style automobile brake f.iction materials were precision ground. Both area and personal air samples were collected throughout each testing session. This work took place within a closed and unventilated metal building, with total interior volume of.2500 m3. Collected air samples were analyzed using phase contrast microscopy (PCM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of.analysis using PCM f.r personal samples (n = 6) ranged f.om f.bers per cc (f.cc) (mean 0.05). f.llow-up analysis of.these personal samples using TEM indicated asbestos-adjusted PCM exposures ranging f.om f.cc (mean ≤ 0.041). Area air samples, taken at distances ranging f.om 1.5 to 9 meters f.om the arc grinder (n = 12), showed asbestos-adjusted PCM concentrations ranging f.om f.cc (mean ≤ 0.01

Ef.orts to recycle copper f.om electrical conductors have led to the development of.specialized machines, which automatically remove insulating covers f.om wires and cable products. In the past, certain wire and cable products were insulated using chrysotile asbestos. This research was undertaken to determine the asbestos f.ber exposure risks associated with power stripping machinery to remove asbestos-containing insulation materials f.om electrical wire or cable. A Rigby Machinery, Inc., Model 4H electric powered wire/cable insulation stripping machine was acquired along with approximately 42 m of.asbestos insulated cable. During two separate, but nearly identical, test sessions, a laborer used the wire stripper to remove the asbestos-containing insulation f.om the subject cable. This work took place within a closed metal building with a total interior volume of.2500 m3. Industrial hygiene personal and area air samples were collected f.r airborne f.bers throughout all wire stripping periods. Collected air samples were analyzed using phase contract microscopy (PCM) and transmission microscopy (TEM). The results of.analysis using PCM f.r personal samples (n = 3) taken during periods of.continuous cable stripping activity showed test period airborne f.ber exposures ranging f.om 0.034 to 0.068 (mean 0.056 f.cc). f.llow-up analysis of.these personal samples using TEM indicated asbestos adjusted PCM exposures ranging f.om 0.017 to 0.045 (mean 0.033 f.cc). Area air samples taken at distances ranging f.om 2 to 9 meters f.om the wire stripper (n = 16) showed asbestos adjusted PCM concentrations ranging f.om less than 0.0001 to 0.041 f.cc (mean 0.007 f.cc). The process of.power stripping asbestos-containing insulation f.om electrical wires and cables can cause exposure to airborne asbestos f.bers. However, the levels of.such exposure are not expected to exceed the current occupational exposure limits f.r asbestos of.0.1 f.cc as an 8-hr TWA or 1.0 f.cc averaged over a 30-minu
