Supplier selection is one of the most crucial activities performed by organizations because of its strategic importance. Supplier selection is a multi-objective problem involving both quantitative and qualitative criteria. Over the years a number of quantitative approaches have been tried. Although the Analytic Hierarchy Process （AHP） has previously been used in supplier selection problems, one major weakness of the application-oriented AHP literature is that it tends to focus on the mechanics of AHP instead of on the theoretical and practical implications associated with finding a solution. Though it is one of the most extensively used Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis methodologies, our literature search indicated that most studies found the best solution and stopped there, ignoring sensitivity analysis. Performing sensitivity analysis is very important for practical decision making, sometimes even as important as finding the best solution. In this paper for the first time a comprehensive application of AHP for a real-world case is presented along with sensitivity analysis in choosing the best suppliers for a Turkish construction company. As a result of this study the company decided to allocate the order quantities between the two top suppliers.

Variation of Bioactive Compounds in Hypericum perforatum Growing in Turkey During Its Phenological Cycle

The present study was conducted to determine phenologic and morphogeneUc variation of hyperlcln, chlorogenlc acid and flavonoids, as rutin, hyperoside, apigenin-7-O-glucoside, quercitrin, quercetin content of Hypericum perforatum L. growing in Turkey. Wild growing plants were harvested at vegetative, floral budding, full flowering, fresh frulUng and mature fruiting stages and dissected into stem, leaf and reproductive tissues and assayed for bioacUve compounds by the High performance liquid chromatography （HPLC） method. Hypericin concentration ranged between 0 and 2.73 mg/g DW, chlorogenic acid 0.00-3.64 mg/g DW, rutin 0.00-3.36 mg/g DW, hyperoside 0.04- 22.42 mg/g DW, quercitrin 0.03-3.46 mg/g DW and quercetin 0.04-1.02 mg/g DW depending on ontogenetic and morphogenetic sampling. Leaves were found to be superior to stems and reproductive parts with regard to phenolic accumulation for all compounds tested while flowers accumulated the highest levels of hypericln. Quercltrln, quercetln and hypericin content in all tissues increased with advancing of developmental stages and reached their highest level during flower ontogenesis. Similarly, chlorogenic acid, hyperoside and apigenin-7-O-glucoside content in different plant parts increased during plant development, however, the highest level was observed at different stages of plant phenology for each tissue. Chlorogenic acid was not detected in stems, leaves and reproductive parts in several stages of plant phenology and its variation during plant growth showed inconsistent manner. In contrast to the other compounds examined, rutin content of stems and leaves decreased with advanc- ing of plant development and the highest level for both tissues was observed at the vegetative stage. However, content of the same compound in reproductive parts was the highest at mature fruiting. The present findings might be useful to obtain increased concentration of these natural compounds.

Loose Seton: A Misnomer of Cutting Seton

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate loose silk seton actually acts as a slow cutting seton contrary to the idea of simply drainage. Besides, to show the effect of loose seton on patient’s incontinence is mostly proportional to the degree of division of the sphincter muscle. Design: Fifty patients with high transsphincteric fistulas were treated with loose seton technique. We measured the length of high sphincteric fistula tracts, pre- and postoperative anal sphincter pressures and incontinence scores. Results: Loose seton with heavy silk resulted in 72% percent of progressive migration of the fistula tract caudally. The more the progressive migration of the loose seton loop, the less the pressure drop in both resting and squeezing in manometric studies. This study is limited by its retrospective design in prospectively collected data and covers relatively small number of patients. Conclusion: Seton is still useful technique in high perianal fistula surgery. Defining this technique as simply “loose” seton is misnomer since it acts as a slowly cutting seton and results in progressive migration of the fistula tract caudally. The more the progressive migration of the loose seton loop, the less the pressure drop would be possible after postoperatively.

Aim： To evaluate the effects of melatonin on antioxidant enzyme levels and histopathologic changes in dizocilpine （MK-801）-induced psychosis model rat testis. Methods： A total of 24 adult male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into three groups with 8 in each. Group I was used as control. Rats in Group II were injected with MK-801 （0.5 mg/kg body weight i.p. for 5 days）. In addition to MK-801, melatonin （50 mg/kg body weight i.p. once a day for 5 days） was injected into the rats in Group Ⅲ. The testes were harvested bilaterally for biochemical and histopathological examinations. Antioxidant enzyme activities, malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl and nitric oxide （NO） levels in testicular tissues were analyzed using spectrophotometric analysis methods. Histopathological examinations of the testes were also performed. Results： MK-801 induced testicular damage, which resulted in significant oxidative stress （OS） by increasing the levels of antioxidant enzymes. The malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl and NO levels were increased in testicular tissues of rats. Treatment with melatonin led to significant decrease in oxidative injury. Administration of melatonin also reduced the detrimental histopathologic effects caused by MK-801. Conclusion： The results of the present study showed that MK-801 cause OS in testicular tissues of rats and treatment with melatonin can reduce the harmful effects＇of MK-801. （Asian JAndro12008 Mar; 10： 259-265）

Aim： To examine whether a relationship exists between glutathione S-transferase Mu-1 （GSTM1） gene polymorphism and the susceptibility of sperm and seminal plasma from patients with idiopathic infertility to oxidative stress. Methods： Fifty-two men with idiopathic infertility and 60 healthy fertile men were recruited to this study. GSTM1 gene polymorphism was determined by polymerase chain reaction （PCR） and both the infertile and control individuals were divided into GSTM1 null and GSTM1 positive groups according to their GSTM1 gene structure. We compared reactive oxygen species （ROS） generation, malondialdehyde （MDA）, protein carbonyls and glutathione （GSH） concentrations, and glutathione S-transferase （GST） activity in seminal plasma and spermatozoa from infertile patients and controls with respect to GSTM1 genotype. Results： Significantly higher levels of oxidative stress and damage markers were found in idiopathic infertile men with the GSTM1 null genotype compared with those with the GSTM1 positive genotype. There was no significant difference in genotype distribution for theGSTM1 variant between the idiopathic infertile subjects and fertile subjects. Patients with the GSTM1 null genotype also had lower sperm concentrations than those with GSTM1 positive genotype. Conclusion： Our results suggest that the susceptibility of sperm and seminal plasma to oxidative stress is significantly greater in idiopathic infertile men with the GSTM1 null genotype compared with those possessing the gene. Therefore, in patients with idiopathic infertility, GSTM1 polymorphism might be an important source of variation in susceptibility of spermatozoa to oxidative damage.

Oxidative stress in testicular tissues of rats exposed to cigarette smoke and protective effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester

Aim： To show the oxidative stress after cigarette smoke exposure in rat testis and to evaluate the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester （CAPE）. Methods： Twenty-one rats were divided into three groups of seven. Animals in Group Ⅰ were used as control. Rats in Group Ⅱ were exposed to cigarette smoke only （4 × 30 min/d） and rats in Group Ⅲ were exposed to cigarette smoke and received daily intraperitoneal injections of CAPE （10 μmol/kg.d）. After 60 days all the rats were killed and the levels of nitric oxide （NO） and anti-oxidant enzymes such as superoxide-dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase （GSH-Px） and the level of malondialdehyde were studied in the testicular tissues of rats with spectrophotometric analysis. Results： There was a significant increase in catalase and superoxide-dismutase activities in Group Ⅱ when compared to the controls, but the levels of both decreased after CAPE administration in Group Ⅲ. GSH-Px activity was decreased in Group Ⅱ but CAPE caused an elevation in GSH-Px activity in Group Ⅲ. The difference between the levels of GSH-Px in Group Ⅰ and Group Ⅱ was significant, but the difference between groups Ⅱ and Ⅲ was not significant. Elevation of malondialdehyde after smoke exposure was significant and CAPE caused a decrease to a level which was not statistically different to the control group. A significantly increased level of NO after exposure to smoke was reversed by CAPE administration and the difference between NO levels in groups Ⅰ and Ⅲ was statistically insignificant. Conclusion： Exposure to cigarette smoke causes changes in the oxidative enzyme levels in rat testis, but CAPE can reverse these harmful effects. （Asian J Andro12006 Mar; 8： 189-193）

Objective:This study aims to investigate the attitude and practice of family planning (FP) methods among Roma women living in northern ***:A total of 120 Roma women living in northern Turkey participated in this descriptive *** were collected using a *** scale of FP attitude was ***:The mean age of participants was 28.9± *** the participants,37.5% (45/120) were primary school graduates,70.8% (85/120) were unemployed,73.4% (88/120) were in a consensual marriage and 94.2% (113/120) had *** majority or 85.8% (103/120) of the participants stated that they used FP *** device (57.4%,69/120) and withdrawal method (22.3%,27/120) were the most frequently used FP ***:The rates at which Roma women use FP were *** attitudes towards FP tended to be negative and the methods used were primarily related to females.

Study objective: Syncope is one of the most common presentation of patients seen in emergency departments (ED). Risk assessment of syncope is challenging. The San Francisco Syncope Rule is the most widely used risk assessment, but has moderate accuracy. The aim of our study was to investigate blood biomarkers as prognostic factors for adverse outcome. Methods: In this observational study we included consecutive adults presenting with syncope to our ED. Management decisions were left to the discretion of the treating physicians. Patients were monitored for adverse events until discharge and underwent a phone interview 30 days after enrolment. Adverse outcome was defined as recurrent syncope, rehospitalization and death within 30 days. Results: We included 132 adult patients of whom 19 (14%) had an adverse event (recurrent syncope = 3, rehospitalisation = 12, death = 4). No difference in the San Francisco Syncope Rule was found in patients with and without adverse events (SFSR ≥ 1: 37% vs. 39%, p = 0.877). Median levels of ProADM (1.23 vs. 0.81 nmol/l;p = 0.006) and NT-proBNP (454 vs 134ng/l;p = 0.035) were higher and median levels for cholesterol (3.68 vs 4.57 mmol/l;p = 0.008) and prealbumin (0.19 vs0.26 g/l;p = 0.005) were lower in patients with adverse events. Prealbumin (AUC 0.72) and ProADM (AUC 0.70) had the highest prognostic accuracy. Conclusion: Biomarkers predicted poor outcome and might be helpful in the context of a clinical algorithm for an improved triage of syncope patients in the ED.
