Anticonvulsant potential of rosuvastatin in combination with carbamazepine and valproate in animal models of epilepsy

The results of an analytical investigation of the flexural behaviour of steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete （sFRC） beams are presented. The complete response of the sFRC beams under displacement controlled static loading was obtained using nonlinear Finite Element （FE） techniques implemented with the help of ATENA 2D soRware. Issues relating to the behaviour of sFRC which have a direct bearing on the FE modelling are discussed with relevance to the software employed for the nonlinear analysis. Constitutive models amenable to numerical analysis for steel fibrous concrete are presented. The structural response throughout the loading regime was captured in terms of the load-deflection behaviour, which in addition to the post-peak response characterized the failure mode of the test beams. The crack patterns at crack initiation and at the end of the tests were also recorded. Experimental results from the specimens of two other investigators were used as control values for this investigation. The response of the specimens of this investigation was evaluated in terms of initial tangent stiffness, peak loads and toughness. Good match was obtained between the results from this investigation and corresponding experimentally obtained values, wherever available. The influence of the fibre content is reflected in the observed trends in peak loads, deflection at peak loads and toughness, which are in broad agreement with known behavioral patterns of sFRC.

Tubulovillous adenoma of anal canal: A case report

Tumors arising from the anal canal are usually of epithelial origin and are mostly squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma. We present a case of benign anal adenomas arising from the anus, an extremely rare diagnosis. A 78-year-old white man presented with rectal bleeding of several months duration. Examination revealed a 4 cm friable mass attached to the anus by a stalk. At surgery, the mass was grasped with a Babcock forceps and was resected using electrocautery. Microscopic examination revealed a tubulovillus adenoma with no areas of high grade dysplasia or malignant transformation. The squamocolumnar junction was visible at the edges of the lesion confirming the anal origin of the tumor. We believe the tubulovillus adenoma arose from either an anal gland or its duct that opens into the anus. Although seen rarely, it is important to recognize and treat these tumors at an early stage because of their potential to transform into adenocarcinoma.

Adenyl cyclase activator forskolin protects against Huntington's disease-like neurodegenerative disorders

Long term suppression of succinate dehydrogenase by selective inhibitor 3-nitropropionic acid has been used in rodents to model Huntington＇s disease where mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damages are primary pathological hallmarks for neuronal damage. Improvements in learning and memory abilities, recovery of energy levels, and reduction of excitotoxicity damage can be achieved through activation of Adenyl cyclase enzyme by a specific phytochemical forskolin. In this study, intraperitoneal administration of 10 mg/kg 3-nitropropionic acid for 15 days in rats notably reduced body weight, worsened motor cocordination（grip strength, beam crossing task, locomotor activity）, resulted in learning and memory deficits, greatly increased acetylcholinesterase, lactate dehydrogenase, nitrite, and malondialdehyde levels, obviously decreased adenosine triphosphate, succinate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and reduced glutathione levels in the striatum, cortex and hippocampus. Intragastric administration of forskolin at 10, 20, 30 mg/kg dose-dependently reversed these behavioral, biochemical and pathological changes caused by 3-nitropropionic acid. These results suggest that forskolin exhibits neuroprotective effects on 3-nitropropionic acid-induced Huntington＇s disease-like neurodegeneration.

A numerical simulation study of CO2 injection for enhancing hydrocarbon recovery and sequestration in liquid-rich shales

Less than 10% of oil is usually recovered from liquid-rich shales and this leaves much room for improvement, while water injection into shale formation is virtually impossible because of the extremely low permeability of the formation matrix. Injecting carbon dioxide（CO2） into oil shale formations can potentially improve oil recovery. Furthermore, the large surface area in organicrich shale could permanently store CO2 without jeopardizing the formation integrity. This work is a mechanism study of evaluating the effectiveness of CO2-enhanced oil shale recovery and shale formation CO2 sequestration capacity using numerical simulation. Petrophysical and fluid properties similar to the Bakken Formation are used to set up the base model for simulation. Result shows that the CO_2 injection could increase the oil recovery factor from7.4% to 53%. In addition, petrophysical characteristics such as in situ stress changes and presence of a natural fracture network in the shale formation are proven to have impacts on subsurface CO2 flow. A response surface modeling approach was applied to investigate the interaction between parameters and generate a proxy model for optimizing oil recovery and CO2 injectivity.

Long-range precipitation forecasts using paleoclimate reconstructions in the western United states

Long-range precipitation forecasts are useful when managing water *** oscillations have been shown to influence *** to a longer cycle of some of the oscillations,a short instrumental record is a limitation in using them for long-range precipitation *** influence of oscillations over precipitation is observable within paleoclimate reconstructions;however,there have been no attempts to utilize these reconstructions in precipitation forecasting.A data-driven model,Kstar,is used for obtaining long-range precipitation forecasts by extending the period of record through the use of reconstructions of *** is a nearest neighbor algorithm with an entropy-based distance ***-atmospheric oscillation reconstructions include the El Nino-southern Oscillation(ENsO),the Pacific Decadal Oscillation(PDO),the North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO),and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation(AMO).Precipitation is forecasted for 20 climate divisions in the western United states.A 10-year moving average is applied to aid in the identification of oscillation phases.A lead time approach is used to simulate a one-year forecast,with a 10-fold cross-validation technique to test the *** are used from 1658-1899,while the observed record is used from *** model is evaluated using mean absolute error(MAE),root mean squared error(RMsE),RMsE-observations standard deviation ratio(RsR),Pearson's correlation coefficient(R),Nashsutcliffe coefficient of efficiency(NsE),and linear error in probability space(LEPs) skill score(sK).The role of individual and coupled oscillations is evaluated by dropping oscillations in the *** results indicate 'good' precipitation estimates using the Kstar *** modeling technique is expected to be useful for long-term water resources planning and management.

Improved simultaneous quantitation of candesartan and hydrochlorthiazide in human plasma by UPLC–Ms/Ms and its application in bioequivalence studies

A validated ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometric method （UPLC-Ms/Ms） was used for the simultaneous quantitation of candesartan （CN） and hydrochlorothiazide （HCT） in human plasma. The analysis was performed on UPLC-Ms/Ms system using turbo ion spray interface. Negative ions were measured in multiple reaction monitoring （MRM） mode. The analytes were extracted using a liquid-liquid extraction （LLE） method by using 0.1 mL of plasma volume. The lower limit of quantitation for CN and HCT was 1.00 ng/mL whereas the upper limit of quantitation was 499.15 ng/mL and 601.61 ng/mL for CN and HCT respectively. CN d4 and HCT-13Cd2 were used as the internal standards for CN and HCT respectively. The chromatography was achieved within 2.0 min run time using a C18 Pheno-menex, Gemini NX （100 mm ~ 4.6 mm, 5 mm） column with organic mixture：buffer solution （80：20, v/v） at a flow rate of 0.800 mL/min. The method has been successfully applied to establish the bioequivalence of candesartan cilexetil （CNC） and HCT immediate release tablets with reference product in human subjects.
