The use of nanotechnology in nanoparticle-based cancer therapeutics is gaining impetus due to the unique biophysical properties of nanoparticles at the quantum level. Silver nanoparticles （AgNPs） have been reported as one type of potent therapeutic nanoparticles. The present study is aimed to determine the effect of AgNPs in arresting the growth of a murine fibrosarcoma by a reductive mechanism. Initially, a bioavailability study showed that mouse serum albumin （MSA）-coated AgNPs have enhanced uptake; therefore, toxicity studies of AgNP-MSA at 10 different doses （1-10 mg/kg b.w.） were performed in LACA mice by measuring the complete blood count, lipid profile and histological parameters. The complete blood count, lipid profile and histological parameter results showed that the doses from 2 to 8 mg （IC50： 6.15 mg/kg b.w.） sequentially increased the count of leukocytes, lymphocytes and granulocytes, whereas the 9- and 10-mg doses showed conclusive toxicity. In an antitumor study, the incidence and size of fibrosarcoma were reduced or delayed when murine fibrosarcoma groups were treated by AgNP-MSA. Transmission electron micrographs showed that considerable uptake of AgNP-MSA by the sentinel immune cells associated with tumor tissue and a morphologically buckled structure of the immune cells containing AgNP-MSA. Because the toxicity studies revealed a relationship between AgNPs and immune function, the protumorigenic cytokines TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β were also assayed in AgNP-MSA-treated and non-treated fibrosarcoma groups, and these cytokines were found to be downregulated after treatment with AgNP-MSA.

Bioadsorption phenomenon is more or less like a chemical reaction and several parameters are bound to affect the process. The pH, amount of adsorbent and agitation time influence the biosorptive potentiality. Hence, the present study on adsorption of Cr(VI) by activated Vetivera roots and Blue green algae Anabaena supports that it is an effective low cost adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) from plating effluent. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm correlate the equilibrium adsorption data. In batch experiments both Vetiveria and Anabaena species were found to be cost effective biosorbent for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from the effluent and comparatively Anabaena species was found to adsorb maximum Cr(VI) (88.86%) at a low contact time of 60 min. The data obtained from the experiments and modeling would prove useful in designing and fabricating an efficient treatment plant for Cr(VI) rich effluent.

GPS measured static and kinematic offsets at near and far field of the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake

The Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake that hit the mainland Japan on 11 th March, 2011 had resulted a devastating Tsunami due to an active thrusting between the Pacific and the North American Plates. Static and kinematic offsets at the offshore epicentre of the Mw 9.0 event remain unanswered and being investigated along with their near and far field limiting distances from the epicentre. Accordingly, offset measurements from 60 continuously operating IGS and GEONET GNSS stations were radially classified from the epicentre and interpreted with analytical models to find their linear offset decay rates. Co-and post-seismic static positional anomaly offsets of sixty days show almost all near field stations had strong or appreciable eastward or south eastward static shifts. Near stations(1.5 m. Spatial models of projected N-S static and kinematic offsets show their asymmetrical distributions around the epicentre with maximum model offset of-1.84 m displaced towards south at-45 km north of the epicentre. The Tohoku-Oki earthquake produced a resultant kinematic offset of-10.2 m towards East at its offshore epicentre;while the estimated near field static offset is ~9.82 m. However, both estimates are bigger than double the resultant offset measured value(~4.3 m) in the Japanese mainland using GPS. The difference in the kinematic and static near field offsets highlight that the near surface had elastic or in-elastic kinematic strain dissipation as against the lithospheric level viscoelastic static response, which resulted rapid kinematic strain release(1.12 cm/km)within the limiting radius of ~220 km from the Tohoku-Oki epicentr

BACKGROUND: Penetrating injuries of the perineum are rare but very dangerous. Since the genitourinary and colorectal organs may be injured, how to evaluate surgical management of the injury is very ***: The present report presents a case of penetrating injury of the perineum by a wooden stick when the patient fell on the upright wooden stick from a tree. The three feet long stick entered the perineal region just left lateral to the anal opening. Upon reaching the thoracic cavity, it broke and only a foot stick was left in the subcutaneous plane. These injuries are potentially serious with risk of damage to multiple organs. Exploratory laprotomy was done, and bladder injury was repaired. The entry wound and the track of stick was thoroughly washed and allowed for secondary intention ***: The post operative period was uneventful and the patient recovered ***: Meticulous evaluation and surgical management of perineal injuries are the key to prevent devastating complications.

A Rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna model is proposed using air as a substrate to study the characteristics of designed antenna. The dimensions of designed antenna are 17 mm × 16.66 mm with substrate at frequency 3.525 GHz. In this paper, the simulation is performed by using software Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave studio based on finite difference time domain technique. The characterization of the designed antenna was analyzed in terms of return loss, bandwidth, directivity, gain, radiation pattern, VSWR.

Objectives:Pesticide toxicity has become one of the major environmental menaces affecting all types of life forms of the *** get washed off from agricultural fields into nearby water bodies and enter the aquatic *** bio-accumulated form finally reaches the human race,through consumption of pesticide infested aquatic animals,causing several physiological *** it becomes necessary to find a therapeutic cure/a preventive measure to stop the health hazard issues of *** this projection a search for a phyto-based-product was made whose primary objective would be to lower the pesticidal toxicity in fish and simultaneously in the human ***:In this study we tried to check whether the phyto-chemical,Chlorophyllin(CHL),known for its anti-genotoxic,anti-oxidant activities,could render any kind of protection against Cypermethrin(CM)induced-toxicity in fish model and mammalian cell line *** the model L6 and fish were pre-treated with CHL prior to exposure of *** scientific parameters like%cellular cytotoxicity,reactive oxygen species(ROS)generation,nuclear condensation,etc were checked to validate the possibility of CHL in protecting CM-induced ***:The overall results revealed that pre-treatment with CHL could restrict the ROS generation leading to modulation in associated cytokine proteins expression NFkβand IFNγ.Further,CHL lowered nuclear condensation and elevated expression of DNA repair proteins p53 and PARP,showing a kind of pre-activation of signalling cascades for overall protection against the severity of pesticidal ***:Thus,this phyto-based preventive approach would possibly solve many areas of human health issues related to pesticide toxicity in future.

Continuous Wave Diode Laser Surface Texturing of Austenitic and Pearlitic Steels

Microstructuring of steel resulting in directional solidification and texturing, previously observed in various metallic materials during pulsed laser processing, melt-spinning, high-gradient liquid metal melting, zone melting etc., is reported for the first time in continuous wave diode laser processing of steels. Influence of laser interaction time on surface morphology/topology of austenitic manganese and pearlitic steels is investigated utilizing a wide rectangular multi-mode diode laser beam. X-ray diffraction analysis of the laser treated austenitic steel surface showed strong texturing influence, with preferred crystallographic orientation of γ-Fe crystals in the (200) plane, which increased with interaction time. In case of pearlitic steel, no such texturing influence could be observed. The free surface topologies were also observed to be different in each case, with well-aligned domes of γ-Fe observed in laser treated austenitic steel as compared to randomly oriented fine domes of metal oxides in pearlitic one. In situ surface temperature measurement during laser irradiation indicated higher temperature on pearlitic steel than in austenitic manganese steel owing to its lower effective thermal conductivity associated with higher oxide film formation.
