Shifting cultivation in Mizoram, India: An empirical study of its economic implications

Shifting cultivation is the major occupation and the main source of income of the marginal farmers(Jhumias) in Mizoram. At present, net area sown in Mizoram State is only 5.5%, of which, 16.9% area is devoted to shifting cultivation. Meanwhile, about 54% people, living in the rural areas, are engaged in practicing it. This paper examines economic implications of shifting cultivation in Mizoram, the eastern extension of the Himalaya. A total of 16 villages from eight districts(two villages from each district), were selected for case study, based on their location and distance from the district’s headquarter. Household level survey was conducted and a purposive random sampling method was employed to select households with 34.2% sampling size. The case study reveals that production and yield of the principal crops grown under shifting cultivation has decreased during the last 17 years(2000-2017), whereas, there is a slight increase in area sown. It further shows that although, a large group of Jhumias are practicing shifting cultivation and growing subsistence cereals, yet, their economic viability is significantly less than cash crops. As a result, a large section of people in rural areas are living below poverty line. The study suggests that for sustainable livelihood, cash crops can replace subsistence crops and shifting cultivation can be converted into permanent cultivation through terracing the Jhum plots.

This paper aims to propose a quality profile of springs of the study area for irrigation. In the present study, fifty-four springs in Almora have been identified from rural as well as urban localities for calculation of irriga- tional water quality parameters during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon, 2008. Spring water samples are collected and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), Na+ , K+ , Ca2+ , Mg2+ , HCO3- , Cl- , and SO42- . Different irrigation quality parameters viz. salinity, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazards (MH) and permeability index (PI) are calculated for the evaluation of spring water quality for irrigation purposes. All springs are found excellent to good based on irrigation quality parameters. Based on Wilcox diagram, about 98% of the water resources are grouped as C1S1 (low-low) and C2S1 (medium-low) classes, so springs are suitable for normal irrigation.

An overview of plant surface structures and their evolution is presented. It combines surface chemistry and architecture with their functions and refers to possible biomimetic applications. Within some 3.5 billion years biological species evolved highly complex multifunctional surfaces for interacting with their environments: some 10 million living prototypes(i.e., estimated number of existing plants and animals) for engineers. The complexity of the hierarchical structures and their functionality in biological organisms surpasses all abiotic natural surfaces: even superhydrophobicity is restricted in nature to living organisms and was probably a key evolutionary step with the invasion of terrestrial habitats some 350–450 million years ago in plants and insects. Special attention should be paid to the fact that global environmental change implies a dramatic loss of species and with it the biological role models. Plants, the dominating group of organisms on our planet, are sessile organisms with large multifunctional surfaces and thus exhibit particular intriguing *** and superhydrophobicity are focal points in this work. We estimate that superhydrophobic plant leaves(e.g., grasses) comprise in total an area of around 250 million km^2, which is about 50% of the total surface of our planet. A survey of structures and functions based on own examinations of almost 20,000 species is provided, for further references we refer to Barthlott et al.(Philos. Trans. R. Soc. A 374: 20160191, 1). A basic difference exists between aquatic nonvascular and land-living vascular plants; the latter exhibit a particular intriguing surface chemistry and architecture. The diversity of features is described in detail according to their hierarchical structural order. High-speed router design for network on chip(HSRDN) is proposed for controlling the traffic congestion and deadlocks. Diagonal based nearest-path routing algorithm for No C(DNRAN) can mitigate the effect of latency by opting for the nearest-path to reach the destination in a network and HSRDN is part of DNRAN. When we analyze the performance of DNRAN for all proposed topologies, nearly 50% better in terms of latency reduction and high throughput over existing router architectures. The proposed topologies(2 D-mesh,2 D-Star mesh over regional mesh(SMo RM), 3 D-mesh,and 3 D-torus) are tested with various applications, viz,audio, video and so on. Here, we also tested with cryptography application for DNRAN. When we analyzed the performance of experimental results, exclusively in 2 D-SMo RM nearly 0.6 times latency get reduced, area expanded by 0.25 and 0.33 times throughput increase in 2 D-SMo RM compared with 3 D-mesh and 3 ***, DNRAN showed an exclusive performance in 2 D-SMo RM compared with other two topologies.

Video prediction is the problem of generating future frames by exploiting the spatiotemporal correlation from the past frame *** is one of the crucial issues in computer vision and has many real-world applications,mainly focused on predicting future scenarios to avoid undesirable ***,modeling future image content and object is challenging due to the dynamic evolution and complexity of the scene,such as occlusions,camera movements,delay and *** frame synthesis or optical-flow estimation are common approaches used by ***,researchers mainly focused on video prediction using one of the *** methods have limitations,such as direct frame synthesis,usually face blurry prediction due to complex pixel distributions in the scene,and optical-flow estimation,usually produce artifacts due to large object displacements or obstructions in the *** this paper,we constructed a deep neural network Frame Prediction Network(FPNet-OF)with multiplebranch inputs(optical flow and original frame)to predict the future video frame by adaptively fusing the future object-motion with the future frame *** key idea is to jointly optimize direct RGB frame synthesis and dense optical flow estimation to generate a superior video prediction *** various real-world datasets,we experimentally verify that our proposed framework can produce high-level video frame compared to other state-ofthe-art framework.

Herbal medicines, mainly of plant source, are invaluable source for the discovery of new therapeutic agents for all sorts of human ailments. The complex pathogenesis of stroke and multifactorial effect of herbal medicine and their active constituents may suggest the promising future of natural medicine for stroke treatment. Anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, neuroprotective and vascular protective effect of herbal medicines are believed to be efficacious in stroke treatment. Herbs typically have fewer reported side effects than allopathic medicine, and may be safer to use over longer period of time. Herbal medicines are believed to be more effective for the longstanding health complaints, such as stroke. Several medicinal plants and their active constituents show the promising results in laboratory research. However failure in transformation of laboratory animal research to the clinical trials has created huge challenge for the use of herbal medicine in stroke. Until and unless scientifically comprehensive evidence of the efficacy and safety of herbal medicine in ischemic stroke patients is available, efforts should be made to continue implementing treatment strategies of proven effectiveness. More consideration should be paid to natural compounds that can have extensive therapeutic time windows, perfect pharmacological targets with few side effects. Herbal medicine has excellent prospective for the treatment of ischemic stroke, but a lot of effort should be invested to transform the success of animal research to human use.
