Inverted cystic tubulovillous adenoma involving Brunner’s glands of duodenum

Benign neoplasia of the duodenum are very rare. Moreover, duodenal tubulovillous adenomas are more uncommon lesions. The microscopic structure of tubulovillous adenoma has frond-like projection of mucosa with branching papillary structure and generally upward growth into the lumen. We describe a 72-year-old man who showed aduodenal tubulovillous adenoma with unusual inverted cystic growth pattern. Interestingly, this tubulovillous adenomatous lesion was interrupted by gastric metaplasia in the deep portion of the cyst and was closely surrounded by Brunner’s glands. Although histogenesis of gastric metaplasia of duodenum is not fully understood, Brunner’s glands has been suggested as a precursor for gastric metaplasia. Therefore, these findings argued that this adenoma arises from Brunner’s glands through gastric metaplasia. This is the first case of inverted cystic tubulovillous adenoma involving Brunner’s glands of duodenum with gastric metaplasia.

Hepatolithiasis and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A review

Although the incidence of hepatolithiasis is decreasing as the pattern of gallstone disease changes in Asia, the prevalence of hepatolithiasis is persistently high, especially in Far Eastern countries. Hepatolithiasis is an established risk factor for cholangiocarcinoma(CCA), and chronic proliferative inflammation may be involved in biliary carcinogenesis and in inducing the upregulation of cell-proliferating factors. With the use of advanced imaging modalities, there has been much improvement in the management of hepatolithiasis and the diagnosis of hepatolithiasis-associated CCA(HLCCA). However, there are many problems in managing the strictures in hepatolithiasis and differentiating them from infiltrating types of CCA. Surgical resection is recommended in cases of single lobe hepatolithiasis with atrophy, uncontrolled stricture, symptom duration of more than 10 years, and long history of biliaryenteric anastomosis. Even after resection, patients should be followed with caution for development of HL-CCA, because HL-CCA is an independent prognostic factor for survival. It is not yet clear whether hepatic resection can reduce the occurrence of subsequent HL-CCA. Furthermore, there are no consistent findings regarding prediction of subsequent HL-CCA in patients with hepatolithiasis. In the management of hepatolithiasis, important factors are the reduction of recurrence of cholangitis and suspicion of unrecognized HL-CCA.

Phosphorus has recently received extensive attention as a promising anode for lithium ion batteries （LIBs） due to its high theoretical capacity of 2,596 mAh·g^-1. To develop high-performance phosphorus anodes for LIBs, carbon materials have been hybridized with phosphorus （P-C） to improve dispersion and con- ductivity. However, the specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability of P-C anodes are still less than satisfactory for practical applications. Furthermore, the exact effects of the carbon support on the electrochemical performance of the P-C anodes are not fully understood. Herein, a series of xP-yC anode materials for LIBs were prepared by a simple and efficient ball-milling method. 6P-4C and 3P-7C were found to be optimum mass ratios of x/y, and delivered initial discharge capacities of 1,803.5 and 1,585.3-mAh·g^-1, respectively, at 0.1 C in the voltage range 0.02-2 V, with an initial capacity retention of 68.3% over 200 cycles （more than 4 months cycling life） and 40.8% over 450 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance of the 6P-4C and 3P-7C samples was attributed to a synergistic effect from both the adsorbed P and carbon.

Isolation and characterization of actinobacteria from Yalujiang coastal wetland, North China

Objective: To evaluate various types of samples from the different marine environments as sources of actinomycetes from the Yalujiang coastal wetland, North China, and to screen their antimicrobial properties. Further, the identified actinomycetes were characterized based on morphological, biochemical, and physiological ***: Eight different production media were used to isolate actinomycets from different stations of marine soil sediments in Yalujiang coastal wetland and the genotypic positions were established by 16 S r ***: A total of 172 actinomycetal isolates were obtained from 13 samples using five media. The most effective culture media in the isolation of actinobacteria were Gause's Synthetic agar and Starch-casein agar. Among 172 isolates, 46 isolates(26.74%) showed antibacterial activity, 70.93% belonged to the genus Streptomyces, others were Micromonospora spp. and Rhodococcus spp. Out of the 46 isolates, two cultures were further supported by morphological characterization ***: This is the first report about actinomycetes isolated from Yalujiang coastal wetland and it seems that the promising isolates from the unusual/unexplored wetland may prove to be an important step in the development of microbial natural product research.

Flavonols are the major class of flavonoids of green Chinese cabbage(Brassica rapa ***).The *** genome harbors seven flavonol synthase genes(BrFLSs),but they have not been functionally ***,transcriptome analysis showed four BrFLSs mainly expressed in Chinese *** them,only BrFLS1 showed major FLS activity and additional flavanone 3β-hydroxylase(F3H)activity,while BrFLS2 and BrFLS3.1 exhibited only marginal F3H *** generated BrFLS1-knockout(BrFLS1-KO)Chinese cabbages using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing and obtained transgene-free homozygous plants without off-target mutation in the T1 generation,which were further advanced to the T2 generation showing normal ***-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis revealed that flavonol glycosides were dramatically decreased in the T2 plants,while dihydroflavonol glycosides accumulated concomitantly to levels corresponding to the reduced levels of *** PCR analysis revealed that the early steps of phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthetic pathway were upregulated in the BrFLS1-KO *** accordance,total phenolic contents were slightly enhanced in the BrFLS1-KO plants,which suggests a negative role of flavonols in phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthesis in Chinese *** surveys revealed that the BrFLS1-KO Chinese cabbages showed normal head formation and reproductive phenotypes,but subtle morphological changes in their heads were *** addition,their seedlings were susceptible to osmotic stress compared to the controls,suggesting that flavonols play a positive role for osmotic stress tolerance in *** *** this study,we showed that CRISPR/Cas9-mediated BrFLS1-KO successfully generated a valuable breeding resource of Chinese cabbage with distinctive metabolic traits and that CRISPR/Cas9 can be efficiently applied in functional Chinese cabbage breeding.

In the current study,we sought to investigate whether T-type Ca^(2+)channels(TCCs)in the brain are involved in generating post-anesthetic hyperexcitatory behaviors(PAHBs).We found that younger rat pups(postnatal days 9-11)had a higher incidence of PAHBs and higher PAHB scores than older pups(postnatal days16-18)during emergence from sevoflurane *** power spectrum of the theta oscillations(4 Hz-8 Hz)in the prefrontal cortex was significantly enhanced in younger pups when PAHBs occurred,while there were no significant changes in older *** the power of theta oscillations and the level of PAHBs were significantly reduced by the administration of TCC ***,the sensitivity of TCCs in the medial dorsal thalamic nucleus to sevoflurane was found to increase with age by investigating the kinetic properties of TCCs in *** were activated by potentiated GABAergic depolarization with a sub-anesthetic dose of sevoflurane(1%).These data suggest that(1)TCCs in the brain contribute to the generation of PAHBs and the concomitant electroencephalographic changes;(2)the stronger inhibitory effect of sevoflurane contributes to the lack of PAHBs in older rats;and(3)the contribution of TCCs to PAHBs is not mediated by a direct effect of sevoflurane on TCCs.

Background: To introduce a new technique of laser-assisted conjunctival cystectomy using pattern scan laser(PASCAL) *** presentation: A 50-years-old Asian woman presented with a conjunctival cyst in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a 5 mm×2 mm sized freely movable conjunctival cyst. After a 1 mm×1 mm sized conjunctival opening was made using PASCAL photocoagulation, the cyst was extracted using a non-toothed forceps without rupture. Two weeks later, complete re-epithelialization of the conjunctiva was observed without any complications. No evidence of recurrence was noted over the 6-month follow-up ***: Conjunctival cystectomy with the adjunctive use of PASCAL photocoagulation can be an effective and safe treatment method.

AIM: To clarify the mechanism underlying the anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer activities of Scorpio water extract (SWE). METHODS: Human hepatoma HepG2 cells were incubated with various concentrations of SWE. After 24-h incubation, cytotoxicity and apoptosis evaluations were determined by MTT and DNA fragmentation assay, respectively. After treatment with SWE, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was determined by measuring the retention of the dye 3,3'-dihexyloxacarbocyanine (DiOC6(3)) and the protein expression including cytochrome C and poly-(ADPribose) polymerase (PARP) were measured by Western blotting. Caspase-3 and -9 enzyme activities were measured using specific fluorescence dyes such as Ac-DEVD-AFC and Ac-LEHD-AFC. RESULTS: We found that treatment with SWE induced apoptosis as confirmed by discontinuous DNA fragmentation in cultured human hepatoma HepG2 cells. Our investigation also showed that SWE-induced apoptosis of HepG2 cells were associated with intracellular events including disruption of MMP, increased translocation of cytochrome C from mitochondria to cytosol, activation of caspase-3, and PARP. Pre-treatment of N-acetyl-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-CHO (Ac-DEVD-CHO), a caspase-3 specific inhibitor, or cyclosporin A (CsA), an inhibitor of MMP disruption, completely abolished SWE-induced DNA fragmentation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that SWE possibly causes mitochondrial damage, leading to cytochrome C release into cytosol and activation of caspases resulting in PARP cleavage and execution of apoptotic cell death in HepG2 cells. These results further suggest that Scorpio may be a valuable agent of therapeutic intervention of human hepatomas.
