Earth＇s climate has oscillated between greenhouse （warm） and icehouse （cold） modes throughout Earth history. At present, Earth is in the midst of an icehouse climate interval, despite the anthropogenic contribution to global warming and sea-level rise due to industrialization during the past two centuries. This led to a dramatic increase in atmospheric CO2, mainly caused by the extensive burning of fossils fuels. The Cretaceous （145 to 66 million years ago） is the youngest prolonged greenhouse climate interval in the Phanerozoic, marked by very high global mean temperatures with some extreme warming peaks （＇hothouse＇ or ＇supergreenhouse＇）, largely absence of permanent continental ice sheets, a mean global sea-level having been some 250 m higher than that of today, and levels of carbon dioxide 4 to 10 times higher than those of the pre-industrial era. If temperature will continue to rise as quickly as in the last three decades, we are close to being at the cusp to a new greenhouse climate interval facing quickly rising global sea-level and reaching atmospheric CO2 levels of the ＇Cretaceous supergreenhouse＇ in about the years 2190-2260 （Hay, 2011）. Evidence from Earth＇s history indicates that glacial-interglacial climate mode changes as well as past sea-level changes such as in the Cretaceous greenhouse occurred at rates orders of magnitude slower than observed at present. The recent rise in global sea-level in response to rising levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases, the associated global warm- ing, and the waning of continental ice shields is a primary concern for human society. To predict future sea-levels we need a better understanding of the record of past sea-level changes, especially in the greenhouse palaeoclimate modes. Therefore, understanding the Cretaceous palaeoclimate is essential for a more accurate prediction of future global climate, sea-level rise and environmental changes in a prospective ＇Cretaceous-like＇ greenhouse Earth.

A new rat model of portal hypertension induced by intraportal injection of microspheres

Im To produce a new rat model of portal hypertension by intraportal injection of microspheres.mETHODS measured aliquots of single or differentsized microspheres (15, 40, 80μm) were injected into the portal vein to block intrahepatic portal radicals. The resultant changes in arterial, portal, hepatic venous and splenic pulp pressures were monitored. The liver and lungs were excised for histological examination.RESULTS Portal venous pressure was elevated from basal value of 089-102 kPa to a steadystate of 198-319 kPa following the sequential injections of single or differentsized microspheres, with a markedly lowered mean arterial pressure. However, a smalldose injection of 80μm microspheres (18×105) produced a steadystate portal venous pressure of 253±017 kPa, and all rats showed normal arterial pressures. In addition, numerous microspheres were found in the lungs in all experimental groups.CONCLUSION Portal hypertension can be reproduced in rats by intraportal injection of microspheres at a small dose of 80μm (18×105). Intrahepatic portalsystemic shunts probably exist in the normal rat liver..

High-grade pancreatic intraepithelial lesions： prevalence and implications in pancreatic neoplasia

BACKGROUND： High-grade pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia（Pan IN-3）, a precursor of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma（PDAC）, is not universally detected in resected pancreatic neoplasms. We sought to determine the prevalence and prognostic relevance of Pan IN-3 lesions in primary surgical resections of PDACs and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms（IPmNs）.mETHODS： A retrospective review of a tertiary care center pathology database（1/2000-6/2014） was performed. Demographics, imaging, pathology, disease-recurrence, and survival data were ***： A total of 458 patients who underwent primary pancreatic resection were included. “Pan IN-3” lesions were found in 74（16.2%） patients who either had PDAC（n=67） or main duct（mD）-IPmN（n=7）. Among IPmN-mDs, Pan IN-3 lesions were exclusively found in those with pathological evidence of chronic pancreatitis. For PDACs, the median overall survival（OS） for pancreata with Pan IN-3 lesions was significantly better than those without（OS 1.12 years, interquartile range [IQR] 0.72, 2.05 years vs OS 0.86 years, IQR 0.64,1.60 years respectively; P=0.04）. multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that the presence of Pan IN-3 lesions was associated with a reduced risk of death（HR=0.43; 95% CI： 0.23-0.82; P=0.01）.CONCLUSIONS： Following primary resection of pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the lower survival observed in patients without Pan IN-3 lesions might suggest a state of complete or accelerated transformation. Further investigations are necessary to validate these findings that might impact disease prognosis and management.

Almost every country requires some form of environmental licensing prior to the inception of development projects that may affect the integrity of the environment and its social *** developed a new conceptual and methodological model to instruct the assessment of the potential impacts posed by proposed *** to Human Interventions for Environmental Licensing Determination(SHIELD)includes a novel geomorphological interpretation of the Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA).It considers the impact of human interventions on geomorphological processes and landscape functioning in the context of the entire ecosystem,going further than the classical concept of *** susceptibility of the site informs the screening stage,allowing local conditions to help define the criteria used in the ***,the level of detail of the environmental baseline is scoped by considering the degree of disturbance of natural processes posed by human *** this geomorphological susceptibility model on different kinds of environments would allow shifting the environmental licensing practices from the prevailing anthropocentric and static conception of the environment towards an Ecosystem *** addresses the need to improve the screening and scoping stages that form the basis of the rest of any *** introduces several innovations to EIA including the incorporation of fuzzy logic,a preassembled database of contributions form experts,and a shifting of emphasis from the type of proposed intervention to the type of environment and its relative susceptibility.

Hybridization and the species problem in conservation

most biologists recognize the ＂species phenomenon＂ as a real pattern in nature： Biodiversity is characterized by dis- continuities between recognizable groups classified as species. many conservation laws focus on preventing species extinction. However, species are not fixed. Discontinuities evolve gradually and sometimes disappear. Exactly how to define particular spe- cies is not always obvious. Hybridization between taxonomic species reminds us that species classification is not a perfect repre- sentation of nature. Classification is a model that is very useful, but not adequate in all cases. Conservationists often confront questions about how to apply species-based laws when hybridization confounds classification. Development of sophisticated techniques and nuanced interpretation of data in the basic study of species and speciation has exposed the need for deeper educa- tion in genetics and evolution for applied conservationists and decision makers. Here we offer a brief perspective on hybridiza- tion and the species problem in conservation. Our intended audience is conservation practitioners and decision-makers more than geneticists and evolutionary biologists. We wish to emphasize that the goals and premises of legislative classification are not identical to those of scientific classification. Sometimes legal classification is required when the best available science indicates that discrete classification is not an adequate model for the case. Establishing legal status and level of protection for hybrids and hybrid populations means choosing from a range of scientifically valid alternatives. Although we should not abandon species-based approaches to conservation, we must recognize their limitations and work to clarify the roles of science and values in ethical and legal decisions [Current Zoology 61 （1）： 206-216, 2015].

Impact of microbial communities from tropical soils on the mobilization of trace metals during dissolution of cinnabar ore

Biodissolution experiments on cinnabar ore （mercury sulphide and other sulphide minerals, such as pyrite） were performed with microorganisms extracted directly from soil. These experiments were carried out in closed systems under aerobic and anaerobic conditions with 2 different soils sampled in French Guyana. The two main objectives of this study were （1） to quantify the ability of microorganisms to mobilize metals （Fe, A1, Hg） during the dissolution of cinnabar ore, and （2） to identify the links between the type and chemical properties of soils, environmental parameters such as season and the strategies developed by indigenous microorganisms extracted from tropical natural soils to mobilize metals, Results indicate that microbial communities extracted directly from various soils are able to （1） survive in the presence of cinnabar ore, as indicated by consumption of carbon sources and, （2） leach Hg from cinnabar in oxic and anoxic dissolution experiments via the acidification of the medium and the production of low molecular mass organic acids （LmmOAs）. The dissolution rate of cinnabar in aerobic conditions with microbial communities ranged from 4.8 x 10-4 to 2.6 x 10-3 μmol/m2/day and was independent of the metabolites released by the microorganisms. In addition, these results suggest an indirect action by the microorganisms in the cinnabar dissolution. Additionally, because iron is a key element in the dynamics of Hg, microbes were stimulated by the presence of this metal, and microbes released LmmOAs that leached iron from iron-bearing minerals, such as pyrite and oxy-hydroxide of iron, in the mixed cinnabar ore.

On rotational normal modes of the Earth：Resonance,excitation,convolution, deconvolution and all that

Earth＇s Coriolis force profoundly alters the eigen frequencies, eigen functions, and excitation of rotational normal modes. Some rotational modes of the solid mantle-fluid outer core-solid inner core Earth system are confirmed observationally and some remain elusive. Here we bring together from literature assertions about an excited resonance system in terms of the Green＇s function and temporal convolution. We raise caveats against taking the face values of the oscillational motion which have been ＂masqueraded＂ by the convolution, necessitating deconvolution for retrieving the excitation function which reflects the true variability. Lastly we exemplify successful applications of the deconvolution in estimating resonance complex frequencies.

Exploring overweight and obesity beyond body mass index:A body composition analysis in people with and without patellofemoral pain

Background:We compared body mass index(BmI),body fat,and skeletal muscle mass between(1) a mixed-sex nonathletic cohort of people with patellofemoral pain(PFP) and pain-free people,and(2) a nonathletic cohort of people with PFP and pain-free people subgrouped by sex(i.e.,men and women with PFP ***-free men and women).methods:This cross-sectional study included 114 people with PFP(71 women,43 men) and 54 pain-free controls(32 women,22 men).All participants attended a single testing session to assess body composition measures,which included BmI,percentage of body fat(%BFBioimpedance),and skeletal muscle mass(both assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis),and percentage of body fat(%BFskinfoid)(assessed by skinfold caliper analysis).A one-way univariate analysis of covariance(age and physical activity levels as covariates) was used to compare body composition measures between groups(i.e.,PFP ***-free group;women with PFP ***-free women;men with PFP ***-free men).Results:Women with PFP presented significantly higher BmI,%BFBiompedance,and %BFSkinfold,and lower skeletal muscle mass compared to pain-free women(p≤0.04;effect size:-0.47 to 0.85).men with PFP and men and women combined had no differences in BmI,%BFBioimpedance,%BFSkinfold,and skeletal muscle mass compared to their respective pain-free groups(p> 0.05).Conclusion:Our findings indicate that BmI and body composition measures should be considered as part of the evaluation and management of people with PFP,especially in women,who have demonstrated higher BmI and body fat and lower skeletal muscle mass compared to pain-free *** studies should not assess body composition measures in a mixed-sex population without distinguishing men participants from women participants.
