Evaluation of a New Design to Improve the Flexibility of the Nucleus Standard Straight Array Cochlear Implant

Cochlear implants can successfully provide auditory information for bilaterally profoundly deaf patients by electrically stimulating auditory nerve fibres via an electrode array, which is surgically implanted into the scala tympani of the cochlea. It is therefore important that the electrode array does not cause damage to the fine intracochlear structures during the process of insertion, as this can result in the loss of spiral ganglion cells, which are necessary for the implant to evoke auditory percepts. There is strong evidence that trauma and damage during insertion of electrode arrays into the human cochlea are related to the stiffness of the electrode array. Previous studies were conducted to experimentally determine the stiffness properties of electrode arrays using three-point flexural bending and buckling *** this paper, the design of nucleus straight electrode array is modified to give a greater flexibility to further reduce the risk of trauma to delicate structures of the cochlea during surgical insertion of the electrode array. This is achieved by reducing the cross-sectional area of the electrode array at selected positions over its length. Improvements in the flexibility of the new straight electrode array and the bending behavior at its tip have been demonstrated using finite element analysis. Loads applied to the tip of the electrode array at different angles with respect to the longitudinal axis of the electrode array showed that the modified design caused the tip to be more flexible and therefore better able to curl around the inner spiral of the scala tympani and thus less likely to penetrate the basilar membrane during insertion. Loads applied at other positions along the electrode array showed that bending occurred more readily using the modified design thereby reducing the friction and shear stresses at the contact interface between the electrode array and the delicate cochlea structures.

High-voltage lithium metal batteries(LMBs)have been considered promising next-generation highenergy-density ***,commercial carbonate electrolytes can scarcely be employed in LMBs owing to their poor compatibility with metallic lithium.N,N-dimethylacrylamide(DMAA)-a crosslinkable solubilizer with a high Gutmann donor number-is employed to facilitate the dissolution of insoluble lithium nitrate(LiNO3)in carbonate-based electrolytes and to form gel polymer electrolytes(GPEs)through in situ *** Lit solvation structure of the GPEs is regulated using LiNO3 and DMAA,which suppresses the decomposition of LiPFe and facilitates the formation of an inorganic-rich solid electrolyte ***,the Coulombic efficiency(CE)of the LillCu cell assembled with a GPE increases to 98.5%at room temperature,and the high-voltage LillNCM622 cell achieves a capacity retention of 80.1%with a high CE of 99.5%after 400 *** bifunctional polymer electrolytes are anticipated to pave the way for next-generation high-voltage LMBs.

Alumina–spinel refractories used in slit-type purging plugs are susceptible to cross-sectional damage,resulting in a serious mismatch between their service life and that of ***–calcium hexaluminate refractories have gradually become the new trend in purging plug materials with the development of refining *** thermomechanical damage of slit-type purging plugs with alumina–calcium hexaluminate refractory was investigated by the thermo-solid coupling *** with the polynomial fitting and design of experiments methods,the influence of thermophysical parameters on temperature and thermal stress of alumina–calcium hexaluminate refractories for purging plugs was systematically *** results show that the maximum thermal stress of the purging plugs appears during the stages of steel transporting and stirring,and the vulnerable parts are located above Y=0.323 *** thermal conductivity and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the material are the most sensitive parameters to the temperature and thermal stress inside the structure,*** addition of more calcium hexaluminate can relieve the stress concentration and large deformation around the ***,when the content of calcium hexaluminate is 47 wt.%and in the form of aggregate-binder,the temperature and thermal stress distribution inside the refractory are optimal,which can effectively improve the service life of the slit-type purging plug.

This study introduces a novel image capture and lighting techniques using a cutting-edge hybrid MEMS scanner system designed for compact microscopic *** scanner comprises a tapered optical fiber waveguide and innovative aerosol-jet printed PZT(lead zirconate titanate)bimorph push-pull actuators on a stainless-steel substrate,effectively addressing issues that are commonly associated with PZT on silicon substrates such as fracture and layer *** leveraging nonlinear vibration,the scanner achieves a spiral scan pattern from a single signal input,in addition to the expected two-dimensional scanning and target illumination from two phase-shifted *** capability is further enhanced by a novel process to taper the optical fiber,which reduces illumination scattering and tunes the fiber to the resonant frequencies of the *** precisely tapered tip enables large fields of view while maintaining independent 2-axis scanning through one-degree-of-freedom *** validation showcases the successful generation of a spiral scan pattern with a 60μm diameter scan area and a 10 Hz frame rate,effectively reconstructing scanned images of 5μm lines,cross patterns(15μm in length with a 5μm gap),and structures of a Psychodidae wing.

Zero-valent iron(ZVI)is a promising material for the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy ***,the effects of ZVI added during flooding or drainage processes on cadmium(Cd)retention remain ***,Cd-contaminated paddy soil was incubated for 40days of flooding and then for 15 days of drainage,and the underlying mechanisms of Cd immobilization coupled with Fe/S/N redox processes were *** addition of ZVI to the flooding process was more conducive to Cd *** potential available Cd was detected by adding ZVI before flooding,which may be due to the increase in paddy soil pH and newly formed secondary Fe ***,the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals promoted the release of soil colloids,thereby increasing significantly the surface sites and causing Cd ***,the addition of ZVI before flooding played a vital role in Cd retention after soil *** contrast,the addition of ZVI in the drainage phase was not conducive to Cd retention,which might be due to the rapid decrease in soil pH that inhibited Cd adsorption and further immobilization on soil *** findings of this study demonstrated that Cd availability in paddy soil was largely reduced by adding ZVI during the flooding period and provide a novel insight into the mechanisms of ZVI remediation in Cd-contaminated paddy soils.

Rationally designing electrolyte additives for highly improving cyclability of LiNi_(0.5)Mn_(1.5)O_(4)/Graphite cells

High voltage is necessary for high energy lithium-ion batteries but difficult to achieve because of the highly deteriorated cyclability of the batteries.A novel strategy is developed to extend cyclability of a high voltage lithium-ion battery,LiNi_(0.5)Mn_(1.5)O_(4)/Graphite(LNMO/Graphite)cell,which emphasizes a rational design of an electrolyte additive that can effectively construct protective interphases on anode and cathode and highly eliminate the effect of hydrogen fluoride(HF).5-Trifluoromethylpyridine-trime thyl lithium borate(LTFMP-TMB),is synthesized,featuring with *** anion TFMPTMB-tends to be enriched on cathode and can be preferentially oxidized yielding TMB and radical TFMP-.Both TMB and radical TFMP can combine HF and thus eliminate the detrimental effect of HF on cathode,while the TMB dragged on cathode thus takes a preferential oxidation and constructs a protective cathode *** the other hand,LTFMP-TMB is preferentially reduced on anode and constructs a protective anode ***,a small amount of LTFMP-TMB(0.2%)in 1.0 M LiPF6in EC/DEC/EMC(3/2/5,wt%)results in a highly improved cyclability of LNMO/Graphite cell,with the capacity retention enhanced from 52%to 80%after 150 cycles at 0.5 C between 3.5 and 4.8 *** as-developed strategy provides a model of designing electrolyte additives for improving cyclability of high voltage batteries.

This study aimed to develop a pan-genotypic and multifunctional small interfering RNA(siRNA)against hepatitis B virus(HBV)with an efficient delivery system for treating chronic hepatitis B(CHB),and explore combined RNA interference(RNAi)and immune modulatory modalities for better viral *** synthetic siRNAs targeting consensus motifs distributed across the whole HBV genome were designed and *** lipid nanoparticle(LNP)formulation was optimized by adopting HO-PEG_(2000)-DMG lipid and modifying the molar ratio of traditional polyethylene glycol(PEG)lipid in LNP *** efficacy and safety of this formulation in delivering siHBV(tLNP/siHBV)along with the mouse IL-2(mIL-2)mRNA(tLNP/siHBVIL2)were evaluated in the rAAVHBV1.3 mouse model.A siRNA combination(terms“siHBV”)with a genotypic coverage of 98.55%was selected,chemically modified,and encapsulated within an optimized LNP(tLNP)of high efficacy and security to fabricate a therapeutic formulation for *** results revealed that tLNP/siHBV significantly reduced the expression of viral antigens and DNA(up to 3log_(10)reduction;vs PBS)in dose-and time-dependent manners at single-dose or multi-dose frequencies,with satisfactory safety *** studies showed that tLNP/siHBVIL2 enables additive antigenic and immune control of the virus,via introducing potent HBsAg clearance through RNAi and triggering strong HBV-specific CD4^(+)and CD8^(+)T cell responses by expressed mIL-2 *** adopting tLNP as nucleic acid nanocarriers,the co-delivery of siHBV and mIL-2 mRNA enables synergistic antigenic and immune control of HBV,thus offering a promising translational therapeutic strategy for treating CHB.

Numerical Study of Two Opposing Weak Polyelectrolyte Brushes by the Self-consistent Field Theory

The self-consistent field theory(SCFT) was employed to numerically study the interaction and interpenetration between two opposing weak polyelectrolyte(PE) brushes formed by grafting weak PE chains onto the surfaces of two long and parallel columns with rectangularshaped cross-section immersed in a salty aqueous solution. The dependences of the brush heights and the average degree of ionization on various system parameters were also investigated. When the brush separation is relatively large compared with the unperturbed brush height, the degree of interpenetration between the two opposing PE brushes was found to increase with increasing grafting density and bulk degree of ionization. The degree of interpenetration also increases with the bulk salt concentration in the osmotic brush regime. Numerical results further revealed that, at a brush separation comparable to the unperturbed brush height, the degree of interpenetration does not increase further with increasing bulk degree of ionization, bulk salt concentration in the osmotic regime and grafting density. The saturation of the degree of interpenetration with these system parameters indicates that the grafted PE chains in the gap between the two columns retract and tilt in order to reduce the unfavorable electrostatic and steric repulsions between the two opposing PE brushes. Based on salt ion concentrations at the midpoint between the two opposing brushes, a quantitative criterion in terms of the unperturbed brush height and Debye screening length was established to determine the threshold value of the brush separation beyond which they are truly independent from each other.
