Prevalence and factors associated with vitamin C deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease

BACKGROUND Patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) are prone to several nutritional deficiencies. However, data are lacking on vitamin C deficiency in Crohn’s disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC) patients, as well as the impact of clinical, biomarker and endoscopic disease severity on the development of vitamin C *** To determine proportions and factors associated with vitamin C deficiency in CD and UC *** In this retrospective study, we obtained clinical, laboratory and endoscopic data from CD and UC patients presenting to the IBD clinic at a single tertiary care center from 2014 to 2019. All patients had an available plasma vitamin C level. Of 353 subjects who met initial search criteria using a cohort discovery tool, 301ultimately met criteria for inclusion in the study. The primary aim described vitamin C deficiency(≤ 11.4 μmol/L) rates in IBD. Secondary analyses compared proportions with deficiency between active and inactive IBD. Multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluated factors associated with *** Of 301 IBD patients, 21.6% had deficiency, including 24.4% of CD patients and 16.0% of UC patients. Peptide Variant Detection by a Living Yeast Biosensor via an Epitope-Selective Protease

We previously demonstrated that we could hijack the fungal pheromone signaling pathway to provide a living yeast biosensor where peptide biomarkers were recognized by G-protein-coupled receptors and engineered to transcribe a ***,we demonstrated that the protease could be reintroduced to the biosensor to provide a simple mechanism for distinguishing single-amino-acid changes in peptide ligands that,otherwise,would likely be difficult to detect using binding-based *** characterized the dose–response curves for five fungal pheromone G-protein-coupled receptors,peptides,and proteases—Saccharomyces cerevisiae,Candida albicans,Schizosaccharomyces pombe,Schizosaccharomyces octosporus,and Schizosaccharomyces *** scanning was carried out for the most selective of these—*** and ***—with and without the *** peptide variants were discovered,which showed diminished cleavage by the protease(CaPep2A and CaPep2A13A).Those peptides were then distinguished by utilizing the biosensor strains with and without the protease,which selectively cleaved and altered the apparent concentration of peptide required for half-maximal activation for 2 peptides—CaPep and CaPep13A,respectively—by more than one order of *** results support the hypothesis that the living yeast biosensor with a sequence-specific protease can translate single-amino-acid changes into more than one order of magnitude apparent shift in the concentration of peptide required for half-maximal *** further engineering by computational modeling and directed evolution,the biosensor could likely distinguish a wide variety of peptide sequences beyond the alanine scanning carried out *** the future,we envision incorporating proteases into our living yeast biosensor for use as a point of care diagnostic,a scalable communication language,and other applications.

The study presented hereby investigates experimentally and with CFD simulations the gas distribution effect on the hydrodynamic of a Geldart Group A turbulent fluidized bed. Experiments were carried out on a cold flow fluidized bed column with an even and uneven gas distribution. Local solid volume fraction profiles were measured using optical probes at different bed heights and along two radial directions. Optical probe measurements allow catching a clear hydrodynamic difference between both even and uneven gas distributions. These results were then used to assess CFD simulations with the code Barracuda^(TM) (MP-PIC approach). It is noteworthy that the choice of drag correlation and boundary conditions strongly influences the agreement between the experimental and CFD results. Once the correct parameters are chosen, CFD simulations captured the effect of gas distribution changes.

Surrogate role of machine learning in motor-drive optimization for more-electric aircraft applications

Motor drives form an essential part of the electric compressors,pumps,braking and actuation systems in the More-Electric Aircraft(MEA).In this paper,the application of Machine Learning(ML)in motor-drive design and optimization process is *** general idea of using ML is to train surrogate models for the *** training process is based on sample data collected from detailed simulation or experiment of motor ***,the Surrogate Role(SR)of ML may vary for different *** paper first introduces the principles of ML and then proposes two SRs(direct mapping approach and correction approach)of the ML in a motor-drive optimization *** different cases are given for the method comparison and validation of ML *** first case is using the sample data from experiments to train the ML surrogate *** the second case,the joint-simulation data is utilized for a multi-objective motor-drive optimization *** is found that both surrogate roles of ML can provide a good mapping model for the cases and in the second case,three feasible design schemes of ML are proposed and validated for the two *** the time consumption in optimizaiton,the proposed ML models can give one motor-drive design point up to 0.044 s while it takes more than 1.5 mins for the used simulation-based models.

BACKGROUND Anastomotic leaks(AL)and gastric conduit necrosis(CN)are serious complications following *** studies have suggested that vascular calcification may be associated with an increased AL rate,but this has not been validated in a United Kingdom *** To investigate whether vascular calcification identified on the pre-operative computed tomography(CT)scan is predictive of AL or *** Routine pre-operative CT scans of 414 patients who underwent oesophagectomy for malignancy with oesophagogastric anastomosis at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham between 2006 and 2018 were retrospectively *** of the proximal aorta,distal aorta,coeliac trunk and branches of the coeliac trunk was scored by two *** relationship between these calcification scores and occurrence of AL and CN was then *** Esophagectomy Complications Consensus Group definition of AL and CN was *** Complication data were available in n=411 patients,of whom 16.7%developed either AL(15.8%)or CN(3.4%).Rates of AL were significantly higher in female patients,at 23.0%,compared to 13.9%in males(P=0.047).CN was significantly more common in females,(8.0%vs 2.2%,P=0.014),patients with diabetes(10.6%vs 2.5%,P=0.014),a history of smoking(10.3%vs 2.3%,P=0.008),and a higher American Society of Anaesthesiologists grade(P=0.024).Out of the 14 conduit necroses,only 4 occurred without a concomitant *** statistically significant association was found between calcification of any of the vessels studied and either of these *** analyses were then performed to identify whether a combination of the calcification scores could be identified that would be significantly predictive of any of the ***,the stepwise approach did not select any factors for inclusion in the final *** analysis was repeated for composite outcomes of those patients with either AL or CN(n=69,16.7%)and for those with both AL and CN(n=10,2.

Over the past two decades, improved diagnosis, pharmaceutical therapies, and interventional strategies have impressively improved the armamentarium of modern cardiologists in the fight against the most incident and lethal diseases： heart failure, ischemic heart disease, and arrhythmia. The innovations in the field have mostly been enabled by inventions based on hypothesis-driven approaches. The invention and development of key cardiac biomarkers, such as natriuretic peptides and cardiac-specific troponins, may serve as examples.

Comparative assessment of agricultural technology generating practices in universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria

To understand the technology generating practices among universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria,this study examined sources of funds for technology generating activities,compared agro-technology generating practices and identified constraining factors hindering technology generating *** hundred and fifty-two academic staff were randomly selected from universities and one hundred and thirty-six respondents were drawn from research *** questionnaires with reliability coefficient of r=0.92 were used to elicit *** were analyzed using descriptive statistics,Likert-scale,T-test and Factor ***(93.4%)of universities’respondents used their personal funds to generate new technology compared to their counterparts in research *** most widely employed mechanism for generating agricultural technologies was joint radio programmes(mean=3.38)while the least was biotechnology(mean=2.57).Major areas of differences in technology generation between the two institutions were the physical distance(t=13.54;P<0.05),farmers participation in field research trials(t=8.50;P<0.05),farmers co-finance of adaptive research trials(t=3.77;P<0.05)and adequate research facilities and incentives to workers(t=2.05;P<0.05).Factors constraining technology generation for universities were poor access to knowledge and information on new innovation(r=0.815)while for research institutes it was limited physical resources(ICT,Telephone)(r=0.801).It was recommended therefore that respondents should look into options of writing alternate fund proposals and submitting to a wider range of funding *** of innovation could be strengthened through the formation of a formal technological linkage advisory council.

Sound Modulation in Singing Katydids Using Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites （IPMCs）

Many insect families have evolved to produce and detect complex singing patterns for the purposes of mating, display of dominance, predator escape, and other needs. While the mechanisms of sound production by insects have been thoroughly studied, man-machine exploitation of such mechanisms has remained unreported. We therefore describe a method to modulate the frequency spectrum in the chirp call of a singing insect, Gampsocleis gratiosa （Orthoptera： Tettigoniidae）, a large katydid indigenous to China and commonly known as Guo Guo or Chinese Bush Cricket. The chirp modulation was achieved through the contact of a ribbon of lonic Polymer-Metal Composite （IPMC） against wing of the insect. The IPMC effectively served as an actuator when a small DC voltage was applied to the ribbon＇s faces. By applying a sequential on/off voltage waveform to the IPMC ribbon, the katydid＇s chirp was modulated in a corresponding manner. This configuration can be used as part of a broader application of using singing insects to harness their acoustic power to produce and propagate machine-induced messages into the acoustic environment.
