The tectonic settings and seismogenic tectonics of the M5.7 Jiujiang earthquake in 2005,Jiangxi Province,china

The M5.7 Jiujiang earthquake in 2005 was a mid-strong one, stronger than expected to occur in the region. This paper discusses the neo-tectonic settings of this earthquake, and it is thought that the earthquake region is located in the transitional belt, a potential area inducing weak to moderately strong earthquakes, between two large different tectonic units. The results of the reconnaissance work and on-the-spot investigation after earthquake indicate that the occurrence of the M5.7 Jiujiang earth- quake is closely related with the NE-trending fault on the western margin of Ruichang Basin. From its controlling to the landforms and Quaternary depositions, geological profiles, ESR dating, etc., the ac- tivity of the Dingjiashan-Langjunshan fault bounding the basin is discussed. It suggests that this fault displays an active one in Middle Pleistocene by the outcrop. Based on the activity of the fault, and the direction and location of the ground fissures, the isoseismal lines and the nodal plane of the focal mechanism solution, it is inferred that the Dingjiashan-Langjunshan fault is the seismogenic tectonics of the M5.7 Jiujiang earthquake, and the intersection point between this fault and the active NW ones is the possible origin of location of this earthquake. Our study shows that this earthquake is not an event exceeding expectation, and that the active and invisible characteristics of the causative fault are typical in the eastern area of china.

This paper focused on the environment risk of the middle route of south-to-north water transferring source project in china. Analytic hierarchy process was applied to risk identification,fuzzy probability-fault tree analysis to risk probability assessment,statistics and analogy process to risk consequences assessment, lastly, grey relevant analysis and comprehensive index process to risk impact evaluation. The main environment risk accident of the project is dam failure, the main causative factors of the accident are catastrophic flood and wrecking earthquake. The flash flood, due to dam failure, will impact on nature, society and economy. The major environment risk areas are Jingzhou and Xiangfan,Hubei Province. The environment risk management measures should be adopted in order to ensure the safety of the project-environment complex system.

SYNTHESIS OF POLY(VINYL ACETATE)-INTERCALATED GRAPHITE OXIDE BY AN IN SITU INTERCALATIVE POLYMERIZATION

Graphite oxide, a pseudo-two-dimensional solid in bulk form, was synthesized from natural graphite powder by oxidization with KMnO4 in concentrated H2SO4. The poly(vinyl acetate)-intercalated graphite oxide nano-composite was prepared by an in situ intercalative polymerization reaction, in which n-octanol-graphite oxide intercalation compounds were first obtained, vinyl acetate monomer was then dispersed into the interlayer of modified graphite oxide, followed by thermal polymerization of the monomer. It was experimentally shown that the c-axis space of poly(vinyl acetate)-intercalated graphite oxide was increased to 0.115 nm, which suggested there existed a monolayer of poly(vinyl acetate) chain between the layers of graphite oxide. The nanocomposite was also characterized with thermal analysis and FT-IR spectrometry.

On the fluorescence of C_60 at room temperature

The fluorescence properties of C 60 in different organic solvents have been investigated at room temperature. Three fluorescence emission centers are discovered and ascribed to different aggregations of C 60 in solvent. A series of blue fluorescence peaks centered at 440 nm derive from C 60 nanoparticles; a distinctive yellow-green fluorescence band in 575 nm region arises from the aggregates of C 60 nanoparticles; a more informative salmon fluorescence band around 700 nm originates from C 60 microcrystals. And the distinct configurations of C 60 aggregations are closely associated with the characteristic interaction between C 60 and solvent molecules.

A new structure of ESKD (expert system based on knowledge discovery system KD (D&K)) is first presented on the basis of KD (D&K)-a synthesized knowledge discovery system based on double-base (database and knowledge base) cooperating mechanism. With all new features, ESKD may form a new research direction and provide a great probability for solving the wealth of knowledge in the knowledge base. The general structural frame of ESKD and some sub-systems among ESKD have been described, and the dynamic knowledge base based on double-base cooperating mechanism has been emphased on. According to the result of demonstrative experi- ment, the structure of ESKD is effective and feasible.

Effects of Surface-Active Elements Sulfur on Flow Patterns of Welding Pool

A 3D mathematical model is developed to calculate the temperature and velocity distributions in a moving gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding pool with different sulfur concentrations. It has been shown that, the weld penetration increases sharply with increasing sulfur content. When sulfur content increases beyond 80 × 10-6, the increase in sulfur content does not have an appreciable difference on the welding pool size and shape, and the depth/width remains constant. Sulfur changes the temperature dependence of surface tension coefficient from a negative value to a positive value and causes significant changes on flow patterns. The increase in soluble sulfur content and the decrease at free surface temperature can extend the region of positive surface tension coefficient. As sulfur content exceeds 125×10-6, the sign of surface tension coefficient is positive. Depending upon the sulfur concentrations, three, one or two vortexes that have different positions, strength and directions may be found in the welding pool. The contrary vortexes can efficiently transfer the thermal energy from the arc, creating a deep welding pool. An optimum range of sulfur content is 20-150×10-6.

Characteristics of fluid substitution in porous rocks

Analysis of the effect of changes in fluid properties of rocks on the compressional-wave velocity VP and shear-wave velocity Vs is very important for understanding the rock physical properties, especially in oilfield exploration and development. The fluid substitution process was analyzed by using ultrasonic measurement and theoretical calculations. The results showed that the effect of fluid substitution on the rock elastic modulus was mainly controlled by fluid properties, saturation, and confining pressure. For a rock with specific properties and porosity, the result of theoretical prediction for fluid substitution accorded with the experimental result under high confining pressure （higher than 60 MPa for our experimental data）, but failed to describe the trend of experimental result under low confining pressure and VP predicted by Gassmann＇s equation was higher than that measured by experiment. A higher porosity resulted in stronger sensitivity of the bulk modulus of saturated rocks to the change of fluid properties.

The genetic diversity of two natural populations(M,N) of beijing duck(Anas platyrhynchos) and 11 artificially selected lines of beijing duck(A,B,E-L,O) from china Gold Star Duck Production Ltd.,along with two Cherry Valley duck lines(C and D) from the British Cherry Valley Livestock Division,was evaluated using 18 microsatellite markers covering 16 linkage groups.A phylogenetic tree of the 15 populations of duck,formed of four main branches,was constructed from Nei’s DAgenetic *** mean genetic differentiation index(FST) in all loci,Nei’s standard genetic distance(Ds),and the genetic distance DAbetween the beijing duck and the Cherry Valley duck were 0.075,0.143 and 0.142,*** results demonstrated a high degree of genetic similarity between the two breeds and supported the hypothesis that the Cherry Valley duck was derived from the beijing *** FSTmatrix of seven clusters of beijing duck suggested that the efficiency of selection was not significant to some extent and should be supplemented by marker -assisted selection.

Fractal structure reconstruction for alumina-silicate refractory fiber and simulation of the thermal conductivity

In this paper, it is proved that the intemal porous structure of alumina-silicate refractory fiber has fractal characteristics, which is reconstructed by the computer and the reconstructed structure further proved to have fractal characteristics. Based on the reconstructed structure, the network-thermal-resistance model is established to calculate the thermal conductivity of the fiber. It is shown that the calculated results agree well with the previous experimental ones, proving the correctness of the method.

A new seismic isolation system and its feasibility study

This paper introduces a new seismic isolation system called a periodic foundation （PF）, where inclusions are periodically arranged. The PF is different from traditional base isolation in that it causes a fundamental frequency shift in the structure, thus reducing its response and generating a frequency gap. If the frequency contents of a seismic wave fall into the gap, it can not propagate in the foundation. Thus, it will exert no influence on the structure above. A systematic study of the band of frequency gap for a 2D PF is conducted. The influence of physical and geometrical parameters such as density and elastic modulus as well as filling fraction of the PF and its materials on the band of frequency gap are investigated, and a design with a frequency gap as low as 2.49-3.72 Hz is achieved. This band of frequency gap corresponds well to the design spectra in earthquake engineering. Numerical simulations of a six-story frame structure with different foundations demonstrate that a proposed PF can greatly reduce the seismic response of an isolated structure. This investigation shows that PFs have great potential in future applications of seismic isolation technology.
