The world is experiencing aging of its population. Age-specific incidence rates of cancer are higher and cancer is now recognized as a part of aging. Treating older patients can be challenging. The clinical behavior of some tumors changes with age and the aging process itself brings physiological changes leading to decline in the function of organs. It is essential to identify those patients with longer life expectancy, potentially more likely to benefit from aggressive treatment vs. those that are more vulnerable to adverse outcomes. A primary determination when considering therapy for an older cancer patient is a patient's physiologic, rather than chronologic age. In order to differentiate amongst patients of the same age, it is useful to determine if a patient is fit or frail. Frail older adults have multiple chronic conditions and difficulties maintaining independence. They may be more vulnerable to therapy toxicities, and may not have substantial lasting benefits from therapy. Geriatric assessment(GA) may be used as a tool to determine reversible deficits and devise treatment strategies to mitigate such deficits. GA is also used in treatment decision making by clinicians, helping to risk stratify patients prior to potentially high-risk therapy. An important practical aspect of GA is the feasibility of incorporating it into a busy oncology practice. Key considerations in performing the GA include: available resources, patient population, GA tools to use, and who will be responsible for using the GA results and develop care plans. Challenges in implementing GA in clinical practice will be discussed.

Prebiotics in non-dairy products:Technological and physiological functionality,challenges,and perspectives

Vegan consumers look for fresh,tasty,and nutritious products that use eco/animal-friendly ingredients.Prebiotics are substrates selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit.This study aimed to overview the potentially vegan products added with prebiotics,their health benefits,and the main technological and sensory challenges.The main potentially vegan products added with prebiotics studied were based on water-soluble plant-based extracts(fermented beverages,frozen desserts,cheese analog),fruits(fruit juices,fruit jelly,and ready to eat fruits),and cereals(snack bars,granola bars,bread,and cookies).The main prebiotic compounds used were inulin,fructooligosaccharides,oligofructose,polydextrose,and xylooligosaccharides.The effects of prebiotic on food products’,host health,and technological and sensory properties depended on the prebiotic type and dosage,food matrix,and subject type.The positive health effects were related to skin health,gut microbiota improvement,hypocholesterolemic impact,reduction of the risk of metabolic diseases,and improvements in postprandial blood glucose and insulin response.Prebiotics could improve vegan products’technological and sensory properties,such as fermentation time,texture and rheological properties,storage length,sensory acceptance,and probiotic survival.Furthermore,they could increase the concentration and/or bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds and vitamins.However,it is of paramount importance the determination of prebiotic stability.The trends direct to new prebiotic compounds based on microalgae,fruit and cereal by-products,and seeds.This review provides industries and researchers with important information about prebiotics and vegan products.

Automatic counting of microglial cell activation and its applications

Glaucoma is a multifactorial optic neuropathy characterized by the damage and death of the retinal ganglion cells.This disease results in vision loss and blindness.Any vision loss resulting from the disease cannot be restored and nowadays there is no available cure for glaucoma; however an early detection and treatment,could offer neuronal protection and avoid later serious damages to the visual function.A full understanding of the etiology of the disease will still require the contribution of many scientific efforts.Glial activation has been observed in glaucoma,being microglial proliferation a hallmark in this neurodegenerative disease.A typical project studying these cellular changes involved in glaucoma often needs thousands of images- from several animals- covering different layers and regions of the retina.The gold standard to evaluate them is the manual count.This method requires a large amount of time from specialized personnel.It is a tedious process and prone to human error.We present here a new method to count microglial cells by using a computer algorithm.It counts in one hour the same number of images that a researcher counts in four weeks,with no loss of reliability.

This paper presents the dynamic motion response by rotor unbalance malfunctions and the restraints available to oppose these applied forces and corrective techniques that can be used to reduce the effects of mass unbalance.The mass unbalance is the most common and frequent anomaly in rotating machines,and therefore,although there are many computer programs that solve many cases,we believe it is important to remember his theory here.About this subject should techniques for correcting unbalance problems described in this document be applied.And,more importantly,a tape is made without disassembling the machine,if the transducers described in this work are installed.

Testing carbonate chemostratigraphy across differentiated ancient shallow-platform environments(Early Kimmeridgian,S Iberia)

Shallow-platform settings with marked differences in paleoplatform bottom physiography influence the degree of connection with oceanic waters and overall circulation patterns,even when sharing the same palaeoclimatic conditions.Two Kimmeridgian shallow-marine settings have been explored to test the sensitivity and reliability of carbonate chemostratigraphy to detect such differences.An integrated overview of the obtained elemental trends depicted four major facies,shared along specific stratigraphic intervals of both depositional records.Diagenesis obliterated original geochemical signals only throughout the siliciclastics-rich interval,corresponding to the most landward setting.For the remaining facies,elemental features could be attributed to the differential action of forcing mechanisms operating along the south-Iberian paleomargin during Kimmeridgian times.The highest degree of continental influence can be recognized by a strong relationship between Fe and Mn for the most proximal setting,which fades out along the mixed carbonate-fine siliciclastic rhythmic deposition in more open settings.A characteristic geochemical signature of progressively more positiveδ^(13)C values and significantly higher Sr content is identified for the interval dominated by biogenic sponge buildups.Such a local response is related to local forcing by upwelling in the surroundings of a coral fringe.The geochemical signature of a hydrothermal origin can be clearly differentiated from the influence of mere terrigenous pulses.Accordingly,the decoupling of Fe and Mn along marginal settings is the clue to detecting major events of palaeogeographic restructuring.Observed temporal variations in Mg content along both studied sections are attributed to tectonic activity influencing nearshore/coastal water masses.By integrating chemostratigraphic information and complementary evidence,the palaeoenvironmental mechanisms promoting differentiated sedimentary records along ancient subtropical,shallow,coastal settings can be disentangled.

Neuropilin-1: A feasible link between liver pathologies and COVID-19

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)pandemic has a tremendous impact on the health of millions of people worldwide.Unfortunately,those suffering from previous pathological conditions are more vulnerable and tend to develop more severe disease upon infection with the new SARS-CoV-2.This coronavirus interacts with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor to invade the cells.Recently,another receptor,neuropilin-1(NRP-1),has been reported to amplify the viral infection.Interestingly,NRP-1 is expressed in nonparenchymal liver cells and is related to and upregulated in a wide variety of liver-related pathologies.It has been observed that SARS-CoV-2 infection promotes liver injury through several pathways that may be influenced by the previous pathological status of the patient and liver expression of NRP-1.Moreover,coronavirus disease 2019 causes an inflammatory cascade called cytokine storm in patients with severe disease.This cytokine storm may influence liver sinusoidal-cell phenotype,facilitating viral invasion.In this review,the shreds of evidence linking NRP-1 with liver pathologies such as hepatocellular carcinoma,liver fibrosis,nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and inflammatory disorders are discussed in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection.In addition,the involvement of the infection-related cytokine storm in NRP-1 overexpression and the subsequent increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection are also analyzed.This review aims to shed some light on the involvement of liver NRP-1 during SARSCoV-2 infection and emphasizes the possible involvement this receptor with the observed liver damage.

ain can be defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience caused by either actual or potential tissue damage or even resemble that unpleasant experience.For years,science has sought to find treatment alternatives,with minimal side effects,to relieve pain.However,the currently available pharmacological options on the market show significant adverse events.Therefore,the search for a safer and highly efficient analgesic treatment has become a priority.Stem cells(SCs)are non-specialized cells with a high capacity for replication,self-renewal,and a wide range of differentiation possibilities.In this review,we provide evidence that the immune and neuromodulatory properties of SCs can be a valuable tool in the search for ideal treatment strategies for different types of pain.With the advantage of multiple administration routes and dosages,therapies based on SCs for pain relief have demonstrated meaningful results with few downsides.Nonetheless,there are still more questions than answers when it comes to the mechanisms and pathways of pain targeted by SCs.Thus,this is an evolving field that merits further investigation towards the development of SCbased analgesic therapies,and this review will approach all of these aspects.

Missed colorectal cancers in a fecal immunochemical test-based screening program: Molecular profiling of interval carcinomas

BACKGROUND For optimizing fecal immunochemical test(FIT)-based screening programs,reducing the rate of missed colorectal cancers(CRCs)by FIT(FIT-interval CRCs)is an important aspect.Knowledge of the molecular make-up of these missed lesions could facilitate more accurate detection of all(precursor)lesions.AIM To compare the molecular make-up of FIT-interval CRCs to lesions that are detected by FIT[screen-detected CRCs(SD-CRCs)].METHODS FIT-interval CRCs observed in a Dutch pilot-program of FIT-based screening were compared to a control group of SD-CRCs in a 1:2 ratio,resulting in 27 FIT-interval CRC and 54 SD-CRCs.Molecular analyses included microsatellite instability(MSI),CpG island methylator phenotype(CIMP),DNA sequence mutations and copy number alterations(CNAs).RESULTS Although no significant differences were reached,FIT-interval CRCs were more often CIMP positive and MSI positive(33%CIMP in FIT-interval CRCs vs 21%in SD-CRCs(P=0.274);19%MSI in FIT-interval CRCs vs 12%in SD-CRCs(P=0.469)),and showed more often serrated pathway associated features such as BRAF(30%vs 12%,P=0.090)and PTEN(15%vs 2.4%,P=0.063)mutations.APC mutations,a classic feature of the adenoma-carcinoma-sequence,were more abundant in SD-CRCs(68%vs 40%in FIT-interval CRCs P=0.035).Regarding CNAs differences between the two groups;FIT-interval CRCs less often showed gains at the regions 8p11.22-q24.3(P=0.009),and more often gains at 20p13-p12.1(P=0.039).CONCLUSION Serrated pathway associated molecular features seem to be more common in FIT-interval CRCs,while classic adenoma carcinoma pathway associated molecular features seem to be more common in SD-CRCs.This indicates that proximal serrated lesions may be overrepresented among FITinterval CRCs.

Compatibility of early natural enemy introductions in commercial pepper and tomato greenhouses with repeated pesticide applications

Successful integrated pest management in protected crops implies an evalu-ation of the compatibility of pesticides and natural enemies(NE),as control strategies that only rely on one tactic can fail when pest populations exceed NE activity or pests become resistant to pesticides.Nowadays in Almeria(Spain),growers release NE prior to transplanting or early in the crop cycle to favor their settlement before pest arrival because this improves biocontrol efficacy,although it extends pesticide exposure periods.The pur-pose of this research was to evaluate the compatibility of two applications of pesticides with key NE in 2-year trials inside tomato and sweet pepper commercial greenhouses:Nesidiocoris tenuis(Reuter)(Hemiptera:Miridae),Orius laevigatus(Say)(Hemiptera:Anthocoridae)and Amblyseius swirskii(Athias-Henriot)(Acari:Phytoseidac).In tomato,flubendiamide and chlorantraniliprole(IOBC category 1)were compatible with N.tenuis,but chlorpyrifos.:methyl and spinosad(IOBC categories 2-3),which efectively reduced Tiuta absoluta(Meyrick)(Lepidoptera:Gelechidae)density,compromised its predatory activity.In sweet pepper,chlorantraniliprole(IOBC category 1)was the only pesticide compatible with O.laevigatus while chlorantraniliprole,emamectin benzoate,spirote-tramat and pymetrozine were harmless(IOBC category 1)to Amblyseius swirskii,and sulfoxaflor slightly harmful(IOBC category 2)to this phytoseiid predator.

Effects of melatonin on the oxidative damage and pancreatic antioxidant defenses in ceruleininduced acute pancreatitis in rats

BACKGROUND： Oxidative stress is recognized as a pivotal effector of several pathogenic processes, including acute pancreatitis. Reactive oxygen species not just cause damage on the main cellular components, but also influence the expression of antioxidant system genes. Antioxidant molecules, such as melatonin, could be good candidates for the treatment of this multidimensional disease. The present study was to evaluate the chemopreventive effect of melatonin in a rat model of ceruleininduced acute pancreatitis.METHODS： Four subcutaneous injections of cerulein（20 μg/kg body weight） were given to Wistar rats at two hours intervals;melatonin was injected intraperitoneally（25 mg/kg body weight）30 minutes before each injection of cerulein. Lipid peroxidation,protein oxidation（carbonyl groups）, total antioxidant status,and glutathione peroxidase activity were determined in pancreatic tissue using commercial kits.RESULTS： The chemopreventive administration of melatonin caused a reduction in lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation due to injections of cerulein. Additionally, melatonin treatment was also able to revert glutathione peroxidase activity and total antioxidant status near to control levels, suggesting that melatonin could prevent from oxidative phenomena in the pancreas, such as lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation,and could stimulate, directly or indirectly, the expression of antioxidant enzymes.CONCLUSION： Melatonin, a polyvalent antioxidant, protected the pancreatic damage via the decrease of oxidative stress andincrease of the activities of antioxidant enzymes in ceruleininduced acute pancreatitis.
