Urease activity and nitrogen dynamics in highly weathered soils with designer biochars under corn cultivation

The application of designer biochar has the potential to impact soil enzyme activity and soil nitrogen ***,very little is known about the mechanisms responsible for biochar-enzyme-nitrogen interaction in highly weathered *** objective of our 3-year(2016-2018)field experiment was to evaluate the effectiveness of designer biochars(DB)in enhancing urease activity(UA),total nitrogen(TN),total inorganic nitrogen(TIN),and nitrogen uptake(NU)at different growth stages(GS)of corn in a highly weathered soil of southeastern coastal plain region,*** treatments have consisted of the control,100%pine chips(100pc),100%poultry litter(100pL),2:1 blend of pc and pL(pcpL),100%raw switchgrass(panicum vaginatum,L;100RSG),and 2:1 blend of pc and RSG(pcRSG).All the designer biochar treatments were applied at the rate of 30,000 kg ha^(−1)to a Goldsboro loamy sand in *** activity,TN,TIN,and NU varied remarkably with DB(p≤0.0001)at different GS(p≤0.0001)of *** treated with 100pL had the greatest UA(28.18μg N g^(−1)h^(−1)),TN(0.087%),and TIN(14.53 mg kg^(−1))while the least UA,TN,and TIN of 20.55μg N g^(−1)h^(−1),0.063%,and 5.42 mg kg^(−1),respectively,were observed from the *** three-year TN average increase over the control was in the order:100pL(36.8%)>100RSG(25.8%)>pcRSG(25.3%)>pcpL(23.9%)>100pc(7.1%).The greatest NU of corn of 140.4 kg N ha^(−1)was from soils treated with 100pL while the least amount of NU was from ***,our results showed promising significance for the treatment of highly weathered soils since the application of DB did enhance UA and improve TN and TIN in the soils.

AIM: To investigate whether intra-procedural diffusion- weighted magnetic resonance imaging can predict response of hepatocellular carcinoma (Hcc) during trans- catheter arterial chemoembolization (TAcE). METHODS: Sixteen patients (15 male), aged 59 ±11 years (range: 42-81 years) underwent a total of 21 separate treatments for unresectable Hcc in a hybrid magnetic resonance/interventional radiology suite. Ana- tomical imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging (b = 0, 500 s/mm2) were performed on a 1.5-T unit. Tumor enhancement and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADc, mm2/s) values were assessed immediately before and at 1 and 3 mo after TAcE. We calculated the percent change (pc) in ADc values at all time points. We compared follow-up ADc values to baseline values using a paired t test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The intra-procedural sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (%) for detecting a complete or partial 1-mo tumor response using ADc pc thresholds of ±5%, ±10%, and ±15% were 77, 67, 91, and 40; 54, 67, 88, and 25; and 46, 100, 100, and 30, respectively. There was no clear predictive value for the 3-mo follow-up. compared to baseline, the immediate post-procedure and 1-mo mean ADc values both increased; the latter obtaining statistical significance (1.48 ± 0.29 mm2/s vs 1.65 ± 0.35 × 10-3 mm2/s, p cOncLUSION: Intra-procedural ADc changes of > 15% predicted 1-mo anatomical Hcc response with the greatest accuracy, and can provide valuable feedback at the time of TAcE.

Numerical approach for modeling particle transport phenomena in a closed loop of a circulating fluidized bed

Numerical modeling of a large scale circulating fiuidized bed （cFB） imposes many complexities and difficulties. presence of a dense solid phase, a variety of spatial and time scales as well as complex model geometries requires advanced numerical techniques. Moreover, the appropriate selection of a numerical model capable of solving granular flow, and geometrical model simplification can have a huge impact on the predicted flow field within the cFB boiler. In order to reduce the cost of the numerical simulations, the complex cFB boiler geometry is reduced to that of the combustion chamber. However, a question arises as to bow much one can simplify the geometrical model without losing accuracy of numerical simulations. To accurately predict the gas-solid and solid-solid mixing processes within subsequent sections of the cFB boiler （combustion chamber, solid separator, drain section）, a complete 3D geometrical model should be used. Nevertheless, because of the presence of various spatial and temporal scales within subsequent boiler sections, the complete model of the 3D cFB boiler is practically unrealizable in numerical simulations. To resolve the aforementioned problems, this paper describes a new approach that can be applied for complete boiler modeling. The proposed approach enables complex particle transport and gas flow problems within each of the boiler sections to be accurately resolved, It has been achieved by dividing the cFB boiler geometry into several submodels, where different numerical approaches can be used to resolve gas-solid transport. The interactions between computational domains were taken into account by connecting the inlets/outlets of each section using a set of user-defined functions implemented into the solution procedure. The proposed approach ensures stable and accurate solution within the separated boiler zones.

Dendroclimatic analysis of white pine (pinus strobus L.)using long-term provenance test sites across eastern North America

Background: The main objective of this study was to examine the climatic sensitivity of the radial growth response of 13 eastern white pine(pinus strobus L.) provenances planted at seven test sites throughout the northern part of the species’ native distribution in eastern North ***: The test sites(i.e., Wabeno, Wisconsin, USA; Manistique, Michigan, USA; pine River, Michigan, USA; Newaygo,Michigan, USA; Turkey point, Ontario, canada; Ganaraska, Ontario, canada; and Orono, Maine, USA) examined in this study were part of a range-wide white pine provenance trial established in the early 1960 s in the eastern United States and canada. principal components analysis(pcA) was used to examine the main modes of variation [first(pc1) and second(pc2) principal component axes] in the standardized radial growth indices of the provenances at each test *** year scores for pc1 and pc2 were examined in relation to an array of test site climate variables using multiple regression analysis to examine the commonality of growth response across all provenances to the climate of each test site. provenance loadings on pc1 and pc2 were correlated with geographic parameters(i.e., latitude, longitude,elevation) and a suite of biophysical parameters associated with provenance origin ***: The amount of variation in radial growth explained by pc1 and pc2 ranged from 43.4% to 89.6%. Dendroclimatic models revealed that white pine radial growth responses to climate were complex and differed among sites. The key dendroclimatic relationships observed included sensitivity to high temperature in winter and summer, cold temperature in the spring and fal(i.e., beginning and end of the growing season), summer moisture stress, potential sensitivity to storminduced damage in spring and fal, and both positive and negative effects of higher winter snowfal. particle transport phenomena in small-scale circulating fiuidized beds （cFB） can be simulated using the Euler-Euler, discrete element method, and Euler-Lagrange approaches. In this work, a hybrid Euler-Lagrange model known as the dense discrete phase model （DDpM）, which has common roots with the multiphase particle-in-cell model, was applied in simulating particle transport within a mid-sized experimental cFB facility. Implementation of the DDpM into the commercial ANSYS Fluent cFD package is relatively young in comparison with the granular Eulerian model. For that reason, validation of the DDpM approach against experimental data is still required and is addressed in this paper. Additional difficulties encountered in modeling fluidization processes are connected with long calculation times. To reduce times, the complete boiler models are simplified to include just the combustion chamber. Such simplifications introduce errors in the predicted solid distribution in the boiler. To investigate the conse- quences of model reduction, simulations were made using the simplified and complete pilot geometries and compared with experimental data. All simulations were performed using the ANSYSFLUENT 14.0 package. A set of user defined functions were used in the hybrid DDpM and Euler-Euler approaches to recirculate solid particles.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HcM), the most common single-gene cardiovascular disease, is associated with increased risk for arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death. The hemodynamic changes known to occur during pregnancy can exacerbate heart failure and arrhythmias in women with HcM. We present a 30-year-old woman with HcM to illustrate the benefits of multidisciplinary team management of severe left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (peak gradient >100 mmHg) for optimal maternal and fetal outcomes.

phylogenetic analysis and biological characteristic tests of marine bacteria isolated from Southern Ocean(Indian sector)water

Fifty-seven bacteria were isolated from Southern Ocean （Indian sector） water samples which were collected from different latitude and longitude of the ocean. All the isolates were able to grow at 4℃, 20℃, 37℃ and tolerable NacI concentration up to 13.5% （w/v）. 29 out of 57 isolates were identified using 16S rDNA amplification and the sequences were submitted to National center for Biotechnology Information （ncBI）. All the isolates were classified by using Ribosomal Database project （RDp） and found that isolates belongs to proteobacteria and Bacteriodes. The average G＋c content was 56.4%. The isolates were screened for the presence of extracellular enzymes, viz. amylase, catalase, urease, esterase, lipase and protease. The disc diffusion method is used to screen antibiotic production by the isolates against four pathogenic bacteria, viz. Salmonella typhimurium （ncIM 2501）, Staphylococcus aureus （ncIM 2122）, Bacillus subtilis （ncIM 2193）, and pseudomonas aeruginosa （ncIM 2036）. Nine out of 29 were found to be antibiotic producer.

Effects of exergaming on motor skill competence,perceived competence,and physical activity in preschool children

Background: Few school settings offer opportunities for preschool children to engage in structured physical activity, and only a few studies have been conducted examining exergaming's effectiveness on health outcomes in this age group. This study's purpose, therefore, was to examine a school-based exergaming intervention's effect on preschool children's perceived competence(pc), motor skill competence(MSc), and physical activity versus usual care(recess), as well as to examine gender differences for these ***: A total of 65 preschool children from 2 underserved urban schools were assigned to 1 of 2 conditions, with the school as the experimental unit:(1) usual care recess group(8 weeks of 100 min of recess/week(5 days ￡ 20 min)) and(2) exergaming intervention group(8 weeks of100 min of exergaming/week(5 days ￡ 20 min) at school). All children underwent identical assessments of pc, MSc, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVpA) at baseline and at the end of the 8 th ***: A significant Group ￡ Time effect was observed for MVpA, F(1, 52) = 4.37, p = 0.04, h2 p= 0.04, but not for pc, F(1, 52) = 0.83, p = 0.37,h2 p= 0.02, or MSc, F(1, 52) = 0.02, p = 0.88, h2 p= 0.00. Specifically, the intervention children displayed significantly greater increased MVpA after8 weeks than the comparison children. Additionally, there was a significant time effect for MSc, F(1, 52) = 15.61, p p= 0.23, and gender effect for MVpA, F(1, 52) = 5.06, p = 0.02, h2 p= 0.09. Although all preschoolers' MSc improved across time, boys demonstrated greater MVpA than girls at both time ***: Exergaming showed a positive effect in promoting preschool children's MVpA at school and has the potential to enhance pc and MSc. More research with larger sample sizes and longer study durations are warranted.
