Current antiepileptic drugs can inhibit seizure occurrence but are not effective in preventing its ***,they produce several side effects,which may impact the efficacy of the *** addition,it has been stimulating the prospection of new molecules isolated from aromatic plants,with potential anticonvulsant and neuroprotective activities and less side *** study aimed to evaluate,though behavioural and neuro-chemical methodologies,the anticonvulsant,and neuroprotective effects of eucalyptol on mice subjected to the pilocarpine-induced seizure ***(100,200 and 400 mg/kg,p.o.)was administered in mice prior to pilocarpine(350 mg/kg,i.p.)and the following behavioural parameters were assessed:Latency to First Seizure(LFS),Seizure Intensity(SI)and Latency to Death(LD).In addition,an oxotremorine-induced tremors test was performed to evaluate the cholinergic system involvement on the eucalyptol *** tests were also performed,including determination of hippocampal(HC)concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS)and nitrite/nitrate and striatal(ST)concentration of noradrenaline,dopamine,and ***,histopathological,and morphometric hippocampal analysis were *** increased the latency to first seizure and latency to death,inhibited oxotremorine-induced tremors,decreased hippocampal TBARS and nitrite/nitrate overproduction,increased striatal noradrenaline and dopamine levels and prevented hippocampal *** results demonstrate the potential anticonvulsant,neuroprotective and antioxidant effects of eucalyptol,probably through a conjunction of mechanisms including muscarinic cholin-ergic antagonism,oxidative stress mitigation and the monoaminergic system modulation,which appears to effectively control the seizure onset.

The impact of tropical land-use change on downstream riverine and estuarine water properties and biogeochemical cycles: a review

Tropical primary forests have been disappearing quickly to make use of the land for commercial ***-use change has an impact on downstream aquatic processes,but those impacts have mainly been studied in temperate climate *** present article reviews the impacts of various tropical land-use changes caused by human activities on downstream riverine and estuarine water properties and biogeochemical cycles,focusing especially on the behaviors of nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P).Logging of tropical primary forests,subsequent establishment of pasture lands,and occasional wildfire or intentional burning have decreased terrestrial N fixation and increased the discharge of P combined with soils,which has lowered the N:P ratio of dissolved inorganic nutrients in the adjacent stream waters and downstream *** fertilizers and aquacultural practices basically cause nutrient enrichment in downstream riverine and estuarine waters,changing the N:P ratio depending on the ***,urbanization causes eutrophication in many tropical estuaries,where a halocline forms easily because of a warm temperature throughout the year and the water at the bottom of the estuary tends to become hypoxic or ***,the impact of land-use change on aquatic processes may be more serious in tropical regions than in temperate or cold climate regions because of(1)a higher biomass and nutrient stock in original tropical forests;(2)higher precipitation,more frequent episodic flooding,and warmer temperatures in tropical regions;and(3)certain practices that are rapidly expanding in tropical regions such as land-based *** land-use changes are causing downstream nutrient enrichment or disturbance of the nutrient balance at tropical land-sea interfaces,and the overall N:P ratios in the aquatic ecosystem seem to be ***,if proper management is conducted and the discharge of nutrients and soils ceases,tropical aquatic systems may have the pote

Temperature variability caused by internal tides in the coastal waters of east coast of Peninsular Malaysia

The effects of tidal currents(i.e., barotropic and internal tides) are important in the biogeochemistry of a coastal shelf sea. The high-frequency of currents and near-bottom temperatures collected in three consecutive southwest monsoon seasons(May, June, July and August of 2013 until 2015) is presented to reveal the role of the tidal currents to the temperature variability in the coastal shelf sea of the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia(ECPM),south of the South China Sea(SCS). The results of a spectral density and harmonic analysis demonstrate that the near-bottom temperature variability and the tidal currents are influenced by diurnal(O_1 and K_1) and semidiurnal(M_2) tidal currents. The spectral density of residual currents(detided data) at 5, 10 and 16 m depth also shows significant peaks at the diurnal tidal frequency(K_1) and small peaks at the semidiurnal tidal frequency(M_2)indicating the existence of internal tides. The result of the horizontal kinetic energy(HKE) shows a strong intermittent energy of internal tides in the ECPM with the strongest energy is found at 16 m depth during a sporadic cooling event in June and July. A high horizontal cross-shore heat flux(16 m) also indicates strong intrusions of cooler water into the ECPM in June and July. During the short duration of cold pulse water observed in June and July, a cross-wavelet analysis also reveals the strong relationship between the near-bottom temperatures and the internal tidal currents at the diurnal tidal frequency. The intrusion of this cooler water is probably related to the monsoon-induced upwelling in June. It is loosely interpreted that the interaction between the strong barotropic tides and the steep slope in the central basin of the SCS under the stratified condition in southwest monsoon has generated these internal tides. Removal and desorption of chromium in synthetic effluent by a mixed culture in a bioreactor with a magnetic field

Two chromium removal experiments were performed in bioreactors with and without a magnetic field under the same *** release of the chromium present in the biomass was tested in two experiments one with the initial pH of the medium and one with pH *** objective was to remove Cr(Ⅵ)and total Cr from the effluent,this was carried out by placing biological treatments of synthetic effluent contaminated with 100 mg/L of Cr(Ⅵ)in a bioreactor with neodymium magnets that applied a magnetic field(intensity85.4 mT)to the mixed *** removal of Cr(Ⅵ)was approximately 100.0%for the bioreactor with a magnetic field and 93,3%for the bioreactor without a magnetic field for9 hr of recirculation of the synthetic effluent by the *** removal of total Cr was61.6%and 48.4%,with and without a magnetic field,respectively;for 24 *** desorption of Cr(VI)in the synthetic effluent was 0.05 mg/L,which is below the limit established by Brazilian legislation(0.1 mg/L)for the discharge of effluent containing Cr(Ⅵ)into bodies of *** results obtained for the removal of chromium in synthetic effluent suggested that there was no significant influence on the viable cell count of the mixed *** desorption of Cr(Ⅵ)in synthetic effluent after bioadsorption of chromium by the mixed culture in the process of removal of chromium in bioreactors with and without a magnetic field was not significant in either of the experiments with different initial pHs.

A renewal theory based performance and configuration framework of the IEEE 802.11ah RAW mechanism

IEEE 802.11ah is a new Wi-Fi standard for sub-1Ghz communications,aiming to address the challenges of the Internet of Things(IoT).Significant changes in the legacy 802.11 standards have been proposed to improve the network performance in high contention scenarios,the most important of which is the Restricted Access Window(RAW)*** mechanism promises to increase the throughput and energy efficiency by dividing stations into different *** this scheme,only the stations belonging to the same group may access the channel,which reduces the collision probability in dense ***,the standard does not define the RAW grouping *** this paper,we develop a new mathematical model based on the renewal theory,which allows for tracking the number of transmissions within the limited RAW slot contention period defined by the *** then analyze and evaluate the performance of RAW *** also introduce a grouping scheme to organize the stations and channel access time into different groups within the ***,we propose an algorithm to derive the RAW configuration parameters of a throughput maximizing grouping *** additionally explore the impact of channel errors on the contention within the time-limited RAW slot and the overall RAW optimal *** presented analytical framework can be applied to many other Wi-Fi standards that integrate periodic channel *** simulations using the MATLAB software validate the analytical model and prove the effectiveness of the proposed RAW configuration scheme.

Machine learning applied to road safety modeling:A systematic literature review

Road safety modeling is a valuable strategy for promoting safe mobility,enabling the development of crash prediction models(CPM)and the investigation of factors contributing to crash *** modeling has traditionally used statistical techniques despite acknowledging the limitations of this kind of approach(specific assumptions and prior definition of the link functions),which provides an opportunity to explore alternatives such as the use of machine learning(ML)*** study reviews papers that used ML techniques for the development of CPM.A systematic literature review protocol was conducted,that resulted in the analysis of papers and their *** types of models were identified:crash frequency,crash classification by severity,and crash frequency and *** first is a regression problem,the second,a classificatory one and the third can be approached either as a combination of the preceding two or as a regression model for the expected number of crashes by severity *** main groups of techniques used for these purposes are nearest neighbor classification,decision trees,evolutionary algorithms,support-vector machine,and artificial neural *** last one is used in many kinds of approaches given the ability to deal with both regression and classification problems,and also multivariate response *** paper also presents the main performance metrics used to evaluate the models and compares the results,showing the clear superiority of the ML-based models over the statistical *** addition,it identifies the main explanatory variables used in the models,which shows the predominance of road-environmental aspects as the most important factors contributing to crash *** review fulfilled its objective,identifying the various approaches and the main research characteristics,limitations,and opportunities,and also highlighting the potential of the usage of ML in crash analyses.

Successful wound healing is a process that has three overlying phases:inflammatory,proliferative and *** wounds are characterized by a perpetuated inflammation that inhibits the proliferative and remodeling phases and impairs the wound *** are key modulators of the wound healing ***,they are responsible for the wound cleaning and for the phagocytosis of pathogens and afterwards they lead to the resolution of the inflammatory response and they express growth factors important for angiogenesis and cytokines and growth factors needed for cell proliferation and deposition of extracellular *** phenotype of the macrophage changes gradually throughout the healing process from the initial M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype characteristic of the acute response to the M2 pro-regenerative phenotype that allows an accurate tissue *** chronic wounds,M1 pro-inflammatory macrophages persist and impair tissue *** such,immunomodulatory biomaterials arise as promising solutions to accelerate the wound healing *** this review,we discuss the importance of macrophages and their polarization throughout the different phases of wound healing;macrophage dysfunction in chronic wounds and the use of immunomodulatory biomaterials to overcome the critical problem of chronic wounds-the continued inflammatory phase that impairs healing.

Numerical Modeling Strategy for the Simulation of Nonlinear Response of Slender Reinforced Concrete Structural Walls

A three-dimensional nonlinear modeling strategy for simulating the seismic response of slender reinforced concrete structural walls with different cross-sectional shapes is presented in this paper.A combination of nonlinear multi-layer shell elements and displacement-based beam-column elements are used to model the unconfined and confined parts of the walls,respectively.A uniaxial material model for reinforcing steel bars that includes buckling and low-cyclic fatigue effects is used to model the longitudinal steel bars within the structural *** material model parameters related to the buckling length are defined based on an analytical expression for reinforcing steel bars embedded in reinforced concrete elements,which are developed based on beam-on-springs model,and validated with experimental tests of boundary elements of structural walls available in the *** experimental case studies of reinforced concrete walls with rectangularshape,T-shape,and U-shape cross-section are used to validate the structural wall numerical modeling strategy.
