Precursor messenger RNA(pre-mRNA)splicing is cat-alyzed by an intricate ribonucleoprotein complex called the *** the spliceosome is consid-ered to be general cell"housek.eping"machinery,mutations in core components of the spliceosome fre-quently correlate with cell-or tissue-specific pheno-types and *** this review,we expound the link. between spliceosome mutations,aberrant splicing,and human ***,spliceosome-targeted therapios(STTs)have become efficient anti-cancer strategies for cancer patients with splicing *** also highlight the link. between spliceosome and immune *** studies have shown that some spliceosome gene mutations can result in immune dysregulation and notable phenotypes due to mis-splicing of immune-related ***,several core spliceosome components harbor splicing-inde-pendent immune functions within the cell,expanding the functional repertoire of these diverse proteins.

Glucosinolates(GLSs) are sulfur-rich, amino acid-derived defense compounds characteristic of the Brassicales order. In the past, GLSs were mostly k.own as anti-nutritional factors in fodder, biopesticides in agriculture, and flavors in condiments such as mustard. However, in recent times, GLSs have received increased attention as promoters of human *** has spurred intensive research towards generating rich sources of health-promoting GLSs. We provide a comprehensive overview of the biotechnologica approaches applied to reach this goal. This includes optimization of GLS production and composition in native, GLS-producing plants, including hairy root and cell cultures thereof, as well as synthetic biology approaches in heterologous hosts, such as tobacco and the microbial organisms Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The progress using these different approaches is discussed.

Neurosurgery is a highly specialized field:it often involves surgical manipulation of noble structures and cerebral retraction is frequently necessary to reach deep-seated brain *** are still no reliable methods preventing possible retraction *** objective of this study was to design work.chambers well suited for transcranial endoscopic surgery while providing safe retraction of the surrounding brain *** chamber is designed to be inserted close to the intracranial point of interest;once it is best placed it can be *** should guarantee an appreciable work.pace similar to that of current neurosurgical *** experimental aspect of this study involved the use of a force sensor to evaluate the pressures exerted on the brain tissue during the retraction *** pterional craniotomy,pressure measurements were made during retraction with the use of a conventional metal spatula with different *** that,although the force values necessary for retraction and exerted on the spatula by the neurosurgeon are the same,the local pressure exerted on the parenchyma at the edge of the spatula at different inclinations varied greatly.A new method of cerebral retraction using a chamber retractor(CR)has been designed to avoid any type of complication due to spatula edge overpressures and to maintain acceptable pressure values exerted on the parenchyma.

Smart Sediment Particle: A novel approach to investigating fluvial bed entrainment using instrumented sensors

The Smart Sediment Particle(SSP) instrumented with multiple sensors to obtain tri-axial linear accelerations is used for studying the mechanism of coarse grain entrainment. Three bed arrangements are tested to examine their influences on entrainment processes and the threshold force and impulse conditions. The SSP shows satisfactory precision to capture the imperceptible movement tendencies immediately(e.g., 0.15 s) after the dislodgement. The experimental results show that bed pack.ng can significantly affect the particle’s entrainment threshold and the path of movement. Lateral movement is predominant for some cases because the entrainment path is based on the least work.done by the flow,even if the direction is not aligned with the flow. The concept of effective protrusion height is proposed to quantify the effect of local bed arrangement on entrainment. The mean velocity field around the SSP is also measured together with the acceleration data. The mean threshold velocity and resultant impulse show consistent dependence on the bed arrangement. In general, the SSP shows a good prospect of being used to study small-scale entrainment mechanism.

背景：美国医学院仍在继续改变其组织结构、职员模式和教育计划。目的：与1993—1994年度进行比较，回顾2003～2004年度美国医学院教育计划的情况。数据来源：医学教育联络委员会（Liaison Committee on Medical Education，LCME）2003～2004年度医学院问卷调查，以及美国医学院联合会编写的1983—1984年度、1993—1994年度和2003～2004年度美国医学教育指南。数据分析：在126所LCME立案医学院，全职教员数由1993～1994年度的90975人增长到2003—2004年度的114549人（＋26％），而录取学生人数基本保持不变（1993-1994年度为66453人，2003—2004年度为67166人）。2003～2004年度48％的医学院的院长同时兼职于医学中心或综合大学（如主管健康事务的副校长）。有94所医学院采用标准化病人／客观结构临床考试的形式对学生进行全面的临床测试；其中有54所学校要求学生必须通过这项测试才能毕业。从2004年春季学年开始，58所学校将要求2005年入学的医学生通过新的美国行医执照考试第二阶段临床技能考试。结论：医学院院长的职责范围逐渐扩大，并伴一个独立的教育计划主管机构的建立。医学院全职教员的人数持续增长，而录取学生的人数则保持稳定。不同医学院所用的标准临床评估方法存在着巨大差异。

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is a serious global public health *** infection may be transmitted through sexual intercourse,parenteral contact or from an infected mother to the baby at birth and,if contracted early in life,may lead to chronic liver disease,including cirrhosis and hepatocellular *** the basis of the HBV carrier rate,the world can be divided in 3 regions of high,medium and low *** major concern is about high endemicity countries,where the most common route of infection remains vertical transmission from mother to *** of all pregnant women and passive immunization with human hepatitis B immunoglobulin are not affordable for many developing *** infection rate can be reduced by modifying behavior,improving individual education,testing all blood donations,assuring asepsis in clinical practice and screening all pregnant ***,availability of a safe and efficacious vaccine and adoption of appropriate immunization strategies are the most effective means to prevent HBV infection and its *** unsolved problem for poorest countries,where the number of people currently infected is high,is the cost of the vaccine.A future challenge is to overcome the social and economic hurdles of maintaining and improving a prevention policy worldwide to reduce the global burden of the disease.

Dear Editor,The atypical chemok.ne receptor ACk.3 has recently been reported to act as an opioid scavenger with unique negative regulatory properties towards different families of opioid ***,we show that conolidine,a natural analgesic alk.loid used in traditional Chinese medicine,targets ACk.3,thereby providing additional proof of a correlation between ACk.3 and pain modulation and opening alternative therapeutic avenues for the treatment of chronic pain.

Detection of small cancer biomark.rs with low molecular weight and a low concentration range has always been challenging yet urgent in many clinical applications such as diagnosing early-stage cancer,monitoring treatment and detecting ***,a highly enhanced plasmonic biosensor that can overcome this challenge is developed using atomically thin two-dimensional phase change *** precisely engineering the configuration with atomically thin materials,the phase singularity has been successfully achieved with a significantly enhanced lateral position shift *** on our k.owledge,it is the first experimental demonstration of a lateral position signal change>340μm at a sensing interface from all optical *** this enhanced plasmonic effect,the detection limit has been experimentally demonstrated to be 10^(-15) mol L^(−1) for TNF-α cancer mark.r,which has been found in various human diseases including inflammatory diseases and different k.nds of *** as-reported novel integration of atomically thin Ge_(2)Sb_(2)Te_(5) with plasmonic substrate, which results in a phase singularity and thus a giant lateral position shift, enables the detection of cancer mark.rs with low molecular weight at femtomolar level. These results will definitely hold promising potential in biomedical application and clinical diagnostics.
